I had a really disappointing experience at Target Optical this past Wednesday. My husband and I walked in with a valid prescription from Costco, simply looking to have it put into his Meta glasses. The employee sitting in the back left area (a heavier set woman wearing black glasses) was immediately dismissive and unprofessional in her approach. She returned his prescription abruptly and gave multiple conflicting reasons as to why she couldn't help--first stating his prescription was "too strong," then saying she didn't have the proper tools, and finally that she "wasn't comfortable" doing it. She also incorrectly stated his prescription was a "-6," when in reality it is -0.05, which was concerning and didn't inspire confidence. The overall interaction felt rushed and dismissive, as if she simply didn't want to assist us. We ended up going to LensCrafters across the street, where they helped us immediately without any issue. With the employee there also stating there is no reason she couldn't have completed this. The difference in professionalism and willingness to assist was night and day. Unfortunately, this experience at Target Optical felt more like a lack of effort and laziness rather than an actual limitation in service. read more

Dr. Chen I seriously one of the best Optomologists I have seen. He listens and is willing to take the extra time to ensure you have the proper prescription. He was VERY helpful in finding me a pair of trial contact lenses for a wedding I am in and even helped cater to my prescription, despite not having a pair in my exact prescription. I will definitely go out of my way to come back here, even though I do not live even reasonably near Riverside. Thanks so much Dr. Chen for clearly caring about your patients! You are the best & have set a high standard for what an Optomologist should be like! UPDATE: My original review was from over three years ago (March 2018). I have since returned to see Dr. Chen, along with recruiting my boyfriend to see him also, so I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him and his staff! In 2020, we tried our local Target optometrist who simply did not stand up to the high bar Dr. Chen had set. For this reason, my boyfriend and I returned again this year! As with prior experiences, the appointments were easy to book online and both Dr. Chen and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful! I even purchased a pair of sunglasses from them, which I traditionally stay away from as I like "unique" styles that are limited in number by an independent manufacturer. The process was easy and I received my new sunglasses in less than a week! I was very thankful for this as we had a vacation planned soon after in sunny Arizona, so my sensitive eyes needed them! During all of our appointments, Dr. Chen is always careful to explain any concerns he has and takes time to ensure his patients truly understand what he is communicating to them. This goes to show that Dr. Chen has a sincere interest in patient care and does not mind taking a bit more time to explain things to his patients. He clearly cares about his patients health and I sincerely appreciate his careful attention to this! I will continue to drive 1.5 hours one way to visit Dr. Chen and am so happy to have found him on a whim! First things first, the staff are all super understanding and sweet from what I've experienced, and that's the only reason they're getting two stars. My complaint is addressing their ability (or lack of) to perform basic job functions. I called in and ordered a 6mo supply of contacts. After a week of having not received them, I called to follow up. They informed me that the contacts were shipped out of state accidentally. Okay, cool. So we reordered them, but this time the lady up sells me into buying a year supply, with no refund of my original purchase for the 6mo supply. Still, fine. We order them and then another week goes by, no sign of the 6mo or 12 mo supply. So, i called again, and again I was told the contacts were mailed out of state, and they have no idea why. They blamed it on tech issues, which I'm not sure if that's true or not. They didn't seem so sure. Anyway, for the third time, we placed the order and thankfully I wasn't charged again. They stated they were sending the contacts express and that they'd arrive in 1-2 days LAST week, yet they still are not here. Because of this, I can not recommend target optical, especially if it is indeed a tech issue, and not the staffs fault. I will be going elsewhere for my optical needs. I've never had this issue ordering in person though so maybe they just are not equipped or trained to do this properly over the phone. Either way, won't be back. Take care. read more

Met with Dr. Chan this morning for my eye exam and contact fitting. Dr. Chan was very friendly and down to earth. He was extremely open with me about my lens options and contact types that could work for my vision. I really appreciate how collaborative Dr. Chan is, he gives his opinion and asks for your thoughts on what you are looking for and he pays attention to your concerns. I've never had an optometrist care- they usually just give you whatever lens/contact type and don't ask about your needs or input. Dr. Chan's personality was really refreshing because he has a sense of humor, which is SO rare with optometrists! Like seriously normally they are all stuffy, rude and grumpy. Lol Dr. Chan was the coolest. He asked about my previous eye surgery, discussed how my medical issues could impact my vision (thyroid can cause swelling behind the eye and cause blurred vision), and was adaptive with which contact felt the best in my stigmatized eye. Lol Thank you Dr. Chan!!! He was very professional and knowledgeable. I felt extremely comfortable in his care. And he's not bad on the eyes ;) He's cute for an optometrist! I was able to get an appointment the same day and there was no wait when I arrived. The appointment was for my 7 year old daughter. I had a very bad experience with the optometry division at this location. On 10/10/20, I selected and paid for my glasses with a new prescription. Didn't hear from the store for three weeks. Just dropped by today after work in the evening, only to be told that the lab canceled the order 10 days ago on 10/20/20 without any explanation. Needless to say I was quite upset and all the clerk did was offer to refund my money back, without finding any other solution as why there was no explanation for the lab refusal. Furthermore, the lab didn't notify the store, and the store didn't notify the customer to resolve the situation. Waiting to talk to someone tomorrow to find a solution. read more

I first walked into Dr. Chan's office to ask about my sons clogged tear duct since birth. He offered a home remedy first to save me any exam fees which I thought was amazing and thoughtful. I then realized that I've been wanting to update my prescription since it's been 10 years and asked him if he could take me right then. I could tell he moved somethings around to accommodate me which I thought was super thoughtful once more and even called to handle my insurance as I had no idea who even covered me. I had my 8 month old son and he was ready for a nap and sick of shopping with me so Dr. Chan accepted my cart full of target items and my baby into his exam room. I held my baby the entire time and Dr. Chan was so patient and informative with me. We did the entire exam while I held my son and it was actually quite fun. He was very good at being descriptive during the test and answered all of my questions and addressed each concern. He put together a pair of "glasses" for me to test out and I was shocked that I could see so well! He is very down to earth with a great sense of humor and really Takes his time especially regarding my light sensitivity. My last 2 optical experiences were not that way. They were stuffy, sold me 3 different "lenses that I needed to have" but with Dr. Chan he provided me with one pair that could see far away, up close and I could instantly feel the straining go away that I do daily on my eyes. It was fast and efficient even with a baby and I cannot wait to see my reviews get him booked solid as every one should be taking care of their eye health and not dodging it because of pricing or stuffy drs. Now on to picking my frame... the girls were amazing! I was so overwhelmed with so many options and they first started suggesting what caught my eye. I started speaking out loud and next thing they were taking lenses out of sunglasses to put an idea of putting the prescription lenses in them. Boom found a pair! They even had an offer buy one, get on 50% off which I had my eye on a pair of Versace sunglasses so a win win! Trasi and I had the best one on one human convo on life and she touched me so deeply I left feeling so much gratitude and Kristi was so knowledgeable about every frame they carried and was able to read through my broken desires for frames and put together a fabulous fit. She really focused on my skin tone and face shape and was so so kind, professional and funny. I will be hoping to see a line out of your door! I needed glasses to see my computer at work. I walked in while shopping on a Friday evening. The opticians invited me to look at glasses and explained the sale on frames. Dr. Chan was available to do an eye exam. He was friendly and thorough. The price was very reasonable. I am a Kaiser patient but it takes so long to get an appointment it's worth paying. Called Target Optical to ask if they accept VSP insurance and the lady on the phone said yes. So we come in to get our eye exam done and Dr Chan was very friendly and thorough. Then after, we go to check out frames and we literally waited about an hour before someone came to help us out. There was only ONE lady working. ONE. And there was about maybe 4 people in the store waiting to get helped as well. Not sure why they only had one person working during the holidays? But anyway, finally she comes to help us and asks for our insurance information and not once did she tell us VSP was an out of network provider. So after all that waiting, she places the order for the lens and frames and prints us the receipt. I notice on the receipt that we paid more than what we should have. So a few days later when we came back to pick up our frames, we asked her why we didn't get to use our $130 frame allowance and she says because Target Optical was a retailer and that the $130 frame allowance is only for private retailer! WTH? I went online to check and found out that Target doesn't accept VSP to begin with and that they would use the out-of-network allowance. Wow, wish the lady would've told me that when I called the first time! We could've saved more by going to a private owned optical shop. read more

I called for an appointment at 10is I was able to see the optometrist at 12 Doctor Jonathan Chan was friendly and knowable. Whole exam probably took about 20mins. Optical department (frames and contacts) was okay. The girl whom originally had helped me was busy with another customer and then took off to lunch. She was very friendly I can't remember her name. (Darn it) tall slim blonde. The other girl whom helped me was new to the location im guessing she didn't know what was where or what they had. She ok , she explained my insurance benefits/coverages and then just sat there till the tall blonde girl started helping choose the right frame. That's when she started helping me out. Process took awhile because my insurance had a hold on it. Pricing was great lots of different frames and styles to chose from and you could use target gift cards and your red card also take advantage of all the promos and discounts they offer. read more

Everything is perfect here! The ladies in the office are so welcoming and friendly! They are so patient and honest and will help me for a long time until I'm comfortable with what I pick! They have many options and it's all very clean. They explain everything and answer all my questions and give honest opinions on what looks good. I have such a hard time finding the right contacts and the doctor is also AMAZING! He tries over and over to tweak them to help me find something that works. He is always so kind, gentle, patient, understanding, accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly. I'm so happy with everything about this! She was so helpful and extremely knowledgeable about frames and lenses as well as our insurance coverage. They had a terrific selection of frames and the cost was about $50 less for frames and lenses than I am accustomed to paying.
