When I arrived, they greeted me at the door, the ladies were all very friendly. The techs were very knowledgeable. The doctor was very thorough and professional during the exam. I had a vision plan but didn't know much and the office staff helped me find my coverage and optimize my glasses based on my plan. For glasses, the office had a nice selection of frames and helped guide me through the process (I had not had Rx glasses before). Location was nice because they have a little parking lot which means you don't have to search for a spot and pay a meter like most places in Somerville. Highly recommend.

One of my requirements from the NJMVC to reacquire my drivers license is to provide them with results from a vision test. I don't use my glasses currently and I'm not required by the state to wear them while driving. I called SFE on Wednesday (5/8/19) to obtain the strength of my last prescription glasses so that I can replace my old and scratched lenses in order to properly perform my vision test. After filling out my release form, I dropped it off in person (as I was not allowed to fax or email it over). As I dropped it off (since I currently do not have the ability to drive) I requested from Wendi, the receptionist, that she please call me when the records are completed so I could coordinate with someone for a ride over to pick them up. She confirmed this by reading my phone number from my file out loud to me to check that it was still the same. Yesterday (5/9/19), I called the office around 4:45 PM to see why I haven't received a call to see if my documents were ready as I was promised. I was told in a very condescending tone that "they've been here waiting since 2:00 PM." When I asked over the phone why I didn't receive a phone call, I got a song and a dance about how "I never asked for a phone call". You literally read my number out loud to me. I'm not allowed to drive. Why would I lie about asking for a phone call? Not my fault she's unorganized and didn't write anything down. When I mentioned that I'm not trying to argue about this over the phone, again, I got a condescending tone of "well, they're here now". Nice. I have 45 days to submit all of my tests to the NJMVC, so I had no choice but to find a ride for this day. Once I walked in, without saying a word, I was handed an envelope with all of my personal medical records. No identification was asked for, no date of birth, nothing. She just assumed I was the correct person picking up my documents. HUGE HIPAA VIOLATION!! I said "that's it?" She said "yup." Unfortunately, my girlfriend was present for all of my recent trips and had to witness all of this first-hand...but on we go with our lives. Thank you Somerville Family Eyecare for all of the hard work and effort you've put into running your practice. I appreciate what you've been able to do to correct my vision over the past 12 years. Unfortunately, I'm not going to allow my records to be in the hands of someone so careless that they just hand them out to anyone that just walks in the front door. Oh, and I also don't appreciate the nasty attitude from Wendi. I was originally going to see if SFE could provide my vision test since I now have vision insurance for the first time in 4 years, but I think I'd prefer to go anywhere else.

This was my first visit to this eye doctor since my 2019 appt somewhere else. For those of you…read moreconcerned about how the practice is handling appts, here's the news: Once you make an appt, you get an email with a form to complete and bring with you and a confirmation with instructions for your appt. They are asking you to call once you're in the parking lot. I waited near the door (not hovering over it) and Dr Leggin came out to bring me inside. She took my temp right away, took my form and asked me to use hand sanitizer. I went into the exam room where she explained everything that was disinfected and what was being used. She washed her hands before starting the exam and used hand sanitizer quite frequently. She remained double masked the entire time and took the time to talk through some questions and comments during the appointment. Once done, I checked out with the front desk, which is partially covered with plexiglass except for a small opening to pass through paperwork and payment. The person at the front desk was also masked and there were signs posted about the guidance they're following. My appt was on a Wednesday and my contacts and glasses are expected to arrive the following Monday. Overall, a solid appt. Peace of mind knowing these are the steps being taken for an eye appt. She is not able to see the same volume of patients due to all the extra steps needed. I lucked out getting an appt just a few days from calling. She is dedicating an hour per patient to allow time for those extra steps (disinfecting, taking temp, asking to to use hand sanitizer, etc). Parking is easy as there's a dedicated shared parking lot for the area she's located (behind old man rafferty's).

Ehhh. First of all…read morethey aren't a corporately owned Pearle Vision Center so they won't honor the corporate coupons. I thought that was weird, like your local dominos accepts corporate coupons. They are kind of gruff. The doctors office was fine, but the eyeglass staff seemed like...I dunno, not customer first. They don't seem to care really - just want to make a sale. The selection of frames is pretty weak. Like they all look alike. The stylish ones on the posters in the store ARE NOT IN THE STORE. I literally drove home and brought back old frames from a pair of sunglasses I had and had them put the lenses in. These were like old people frames or a lot of the same shape/size. Service example- they yell FROM ACROSS THE STORE at you like the second you open the door to sign in - the sign in process was pretty confusing/unorganized. They aren't clear that the add ons to the exams aren't required. For the glasses, I wasn't explained the different lens options just shown a sheet and told to pick which ones I wanted. Other places talk you through the lens options. I needed a thinner lens- I had to ask for it, it wasn't offered to me initially. All in all, I needed glasses replaced and based on past experience with Pearle offices I picked this one because it was close. I should have gone to LensCrafters like I wanted to as it has been 2 full weeks and they aren't expected back for another week. I could have walked them to the Luxottica factory in 2 weeks or had my glasses in a week from a competitor. What's done is done. I'll tell you what, I won't go back after I get these glasses. ‍
