    Silence of the Shrimps
    Paul M.

"Silence of the Shrimps" By Dr. Samibal Schlecter One fine day, Samibal was getting hungry for animal protein, and started eyeing his co-workers. Alas, they were way too fat, and high in saturated fats. He also needed to stay out of prison and to try to behave himself. He then leaped into his Sami-mobile and cruised along Tully Ave., looking for protein. Samibal's goal was to get the local M.O.A.B. Burger ASAP, but the traffic light went first to Yellow and then a bright Red, which foiled his diabolical plan. While waiting at the light, he somehow spied a new Mexican restaurant in his left peripheral vision, and rerouted his synapses toward investigating this new & improved goal. The Sami-mobile silently slid into a nice & close parking space. He got out and walked silently toward the door, all the while, snapping iphone pics to document this culinary discovery. Samibal entered, and was immediately surprised to find a clean & bright interior, with over a dozen clean tables, and a big counter sign, that abounded with zillions of choices. He scan the menu for tasty protein & decided to try to go with a "custom" seafood choice. He asked if they could do a Shrimp/ Fish Combo Wet Super-Duper-Burrito with both sauces on each half, and they did not even bat an eye, while saying "Yes". They better say "YES" to good old HUNGRY SAMIBAL! "Believe me, you don't want Samibal Schlecter inside your head." Samibal took a seat while they silenced the shrimp and fish, and stuffed their bodies into a huge burrito, which was partially buried in both green and red sauce. After about ten minutes, the waiter appeared with the generous plate, and Sami took a Yelp pic or two, and then a bite. "YUM, YUM, EAT UM UP!" said Samibal! but, his pulse never got above 85, even when he ate... Sami was very pleased with the Super-duper Burrito, but the Shrimps were less pleased, and he thought he could hear the little screams of the Exoskeletonless Arthropods, as they slide down his gullet. The Super-duper Burrito has a nice kick to it, but it was less than a donkey's , and more than a tree shrew's. It appeared that this was far tastier and healthier, than any of his co-workers. It was also comforting to know, that it is quite legal to eat almost any member of the Arthropoda Phylum. The Subphylum Crustacea and subclass Malacostraca are the best for Sapiens. He also noted, that the chairs were almost brand new, and had very cushy butt-loving pads that almost seemed to cradle his ample posterior. A comfy butt seems to be critical to the enjoyment of a Super-Duper Burrito. Sami also enjoyed the extensive menu which also included some funny jokes, such as: 1) Never raise your hands to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected. 2) I'm not into working out. My philosophy is no pain, no pain... Sami says! Go to Taqueria Y Mariscos but beware of the Silence of the Shrimps :) ....and please remember that Shrimp are really only "Sea-insects", complete with exoskeletons, antennae, and an open circulatory system (ref. : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crustacean ). "I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner. Bye!", Dr. Samibal Schlecter P.S.- Taqueria Y Mariscos is right behind Modesto Junior College, and is in a small plaza next to the Off Campus Bookstore, two Haircut places, and a rather bland unremarkable "Oriental" restaurant. The location was a Pizza place before this. This Taqueria has relocated from 1341 Coldwell Ave., where it was formerly called El Marisquero. P.S.S.- They also have a big selection of bottled Mexican & Domestic Beer, as well as, three beers on tap. They do have a limited Salsa Bar, but the chips & fixins are good. The tables, chairs, & decor are new or remodeled, and are in great condition. It is a casual dinning place and is not "date-worth"...but it is "lunch-worthy". It could possibly be the "Best" Mexican food closest to the Downtown Modesto area...and is only a 5-10 minute drive from the Downtown area. The prices are quite reasonable for such good quality & quantity. Note: A rather loose homage to the great Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs"

    Double michelada

Large serving for tacos and really good michelada, got the double and it was well worth it

Unbelievably great Mexican seafood! The #26 is my favorite all in spicy flavorful dinner dish. So good! Also got a plate of oysters. Will definitely go back for more. So excited didn't take before photos but as you can we destroyed the dishes. Sorry for the left over photos.

This place never disappoints from the staff to their food. If you love seafood and micheladas this is place to visit.

Exactly what it looked like before starting to eat...

Ordered Camarones Ala Diabla (to go) , It only had about 8 little shrimp. I wish I would have checked the plate before leaving

Like most white people, the word "Mexican Seafood" conjures up images of immodium and lots of cramping. Thus, when I loved to Modesto in 11', we worked our way gingerly through the menu, stating with the old-standby favorites super burrito (make sure you ask for the grilled chicken version) quesadilla, and guacamole/chips. More and more we watched as other patrons were getting huge plates of fish, crab, and ship delivered to their tables. Also, they serve these massive beer mugs filled with bloody mary? looking stuff that has huge shrimp, celery and umbrellas hanging out of it. I've never tried one, but it LOOKS awesome. So anyway, we gingerly dove into the seafood offerings. (insert head explosion here) Holy shit. They must have the Mexican Jesus cooking in the back because the food is absolutely amazing. I mean, just a fantastic gastronomical experience every single time. Shrimp with garlic sauce and re-fried beans, fish tacos and their signature dish the Mariscos which is a plate filled with fresh fish, shrimp, crab, mussels, clams, onions and peppers. It is a massive vegetarian delight. No carbs at all, which is incredible. The plate is so huge it looks like they slayed a Kraken. Absolutely amazing. Fresh, lively (a tiny bit of heat to warm your mouth, but not overly spicy) and inspired. When I bought my college-area house a few years ago, I was happy to discover this place a few blocks away. Now that I've discovered the seafood, it's my perra. There is no other Mexican that compares. In summary... 1. The Guacamole is chunky, always made to order and the best in Modesto. 2. The food is cheap, portions large, and always made with fresh ingredients. 3. The place is always filled with loud, happy Mexicans, which is awesome. #3 should be the only Yelp endorsement you need.

    Chavelas
    Yolanda S.

Came here on a sunday to have chavelas and eat after a night out drinking because seafood is the best way to cure a hangover! We got the camarones a la diabla and my boyfriend and i LOVE spicy foods but it was wayyyy too spicy like too spicy we couldnt enjoy it nor finish it so i suggest getting them medium if you guys want to enjoy it. Other than that, the chavelas were amazing and customer service was good aswell. I will be going back most definetly!

    Worms

Found not one but several little live warms moving round in the shells of the oysters we were served. Not any normal worms either, these had half their body looking like a centipede. The cashier was told by the cook to say that's happened before and it's normal in oysters. I did tell her No No. I've eaten them all my life. I asked for a refund and she went back to tell to cooked who told her to do it, and tell me again that it happens every once in a while and it's normal. The cook didn't even look at us or offer an apology. It would have been the right thing yo do . The cashier tried to say it was normal again. I was respectful towards her since I understood it's not her fault, but definitely told her "No that was not normal. It was Not normal and Not okay. The cook should have washed them and ensured they were freshened before serving them to my daughter and me. I don't know in what F'n world is it okay for a restaurant to not wash the oysters before opening them and serving them to customers. I got my refund for the oysters and walked away leaving the rest of my drinks, and meals there. Literally barely made it home for my daughter and I to puke. I hope it doesn't cause us food poisoning....Well if it does they can discuss and explain it with the health department and maybe offer them an apology.

everything here tastes sooooo good, when i was looking for somewhere to eat, i searched micheladas, and this place popped up, to my surprise the menu consisted of tons of seafood! excuse my ignorance i had no idea mariscos meant seafood in spanish, but it was ok because i love seafood! I ordered the dried fish, with a side of the garlic sauce as recomended by the cashier! it was ssooo flavorful and FRESH! the rice was on point and so was my chavela! my chavela was not over powered with clamato could have had more shrimp but it was still good!

Worth it! Walked into a very quiet, but colorful restaurant with only one other patron inside. The employees were so nice. We were told to pick anywhere, we were brought menus and instantly asked if we'd like anything to drink or if we wanted to look at the menu first... We asked for suggestions and the waitress offered the types of drinks they have. She brought us chips and salsa. The chips were homemade with a perfect crunch. The salsa was fresh, chunky and not spicy. The pepino cone limo aqua Fresca was the best aqua Fresca I've EVER had. Not too sweet at all and was SO REFRESHING. We also ordered an horchata and I was told that was just as good. The food... Where to start. We ordered an empanada and some quedabirria tacos. The empanada was HUGE, deliciously filling with fresh ingredients. It had great flavor. The quesabirria tacos were probably the best we've had. You order the amount you want. They are 5.99 each and oh so delicious. The meat tasted SO FRESH and flavorful. The creamy jalapeño salsa had a NICE kick to it. All meals come with radish and pickled onions as garnish, but eating them with the meal made it even more refreshing and delicious. They need more than one location, but until then we will be back! My only real recommendation is to avoid sitting in the bar area if you're in a hurry. Service there tends to move a lot slower, so it can take a while to get your order in and get your food. The restaurant itself is a little run down, and the bathrooms could definitely use some attention, but the bar and outside area is decorated nicely and has a good atmosphere overall. Instead of trying to resolve the situation or make it right, the manager, Noah, became argumentative and tried to debate what had been said rather than listen to the customer. After waiting that long, the last thing anyone expects is to feel like they have to argue just to be heard. What made it more disappointing was the lack of willingness to fix the issue or offer a solution. We came in hoping for a good meal and left feeling frustrated and unheard. It's sad because good service could have easily turned this into a positive experience. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. At the end of it he realized and came back and finally apologized.
