5 tacos
Jon M.

I've been to soooo many taquerias and while the food here wasn't too bad, there were a couple of things that were really odd to me...1 if you love tacos (like me) they don't sell individual tacos...I go for the tacos and don't care about the rice and beans and only options were $11 for 3 tacos, rice, and beans.. Or $13 for 5 tacos... They have flan that I would have gotten instead of all 5 tacos, but this is the only one I've seen that doesn't sell tacos individually (my usual order is 4 tacos of different meats and some sort of dessert or elote). They did let me pick 5 different meats for the tacos, at least. The pollo was a bit bland, but the carnitas were so juicy it squirted liquid all over when took a bite, so that's good, though the barbacoa was kinda dry. I wasn't a huge fan of the Al Pastor, though the Asada was pretty good. One thing I found odd was that they put a small chunk of potato in with the order as well. Overall not worth the $13 since the tacos while good flavor, were small and that's upwards of $2.50 per taco which is even a little high for the current economy and they need to sell individual tacos and not just 2 plates with tacos (as I mentioned earlier)

SUMMARY: For people who live in the "tonier" parts of town who say "There's no good Mexican food in North Dallas", well get out of your bubble and come to Denton. There's plenty of quality Mexican eateries out here! BACKGROUND: Consider this particular TM one of my go-to places for good Mexican food. While the parking is a little tight, the food is worth it. FOOD: Really good. Quality ingredients, always hot, never had a bad meal here. Reminds me of and what I'm used to eating back in LA. They serve up tacos (doubled corn tortillas) with cilantro and chopped onions. Their asada is my favorite but their al pastor and carnitas is pretty good too. I wasn't impressed with their lengua as the time I had it, it tasted like it had been sitting too long (mushy texture). What's nice about this place is that they give you some sliced cucumber, a lime, but also a nice little potato wedge AND AND AND! A grilled green chile :) This is the only place in the area so far that gives you this nice bit of value add. Also they have no issues giving me double rice vs rice and beans. While I like refried beans, most days I try not to eat it lest I smoke out my coworker haha. SERVICE: The people who run this place are great. Much better than the other TM down near the Medical City off I-35E (south of Buc'ees). ATMOSPHERE: Typical, nothing fancy. PARKING: Be careful parking in the parallel spots that run parallel with University. While I haven't seen an accident, I've seen big trucks almost hit cars parked in those spaces. RETURN VISIT? More than I care to admit :) This place is great and I highly recommend you give it a try.

Number 4, the three taco combo.

Worth a visit for authentic Mexican food. Parking a little tight out front. Bring the smaller car if you have a choice. Basic fare, on styrofoam plates with plastic utensils. But the tacos I had were excellent with well seasoned carnitas topped with chopped onions and cilantro. Two pieces of lime. Provided a nice citrus finish. Refried beans all they have, as well as the rice, were nothing to write home about. But surprisingly the platter was garnished with grilled onions, a roasted potatoe and a delicious roasted pepper! Really well done. Chips and salsa also good Definitely recommend this spot and a steady stream of diners, many Mexican, apparently agree!

Menudo is always good

#21 Bistek a la Mexicana

This was my first time to this location after being to the Mayhill location many times. My first impression is that the parking situation is much worse at this location than the other one. I ended up finding parking around the side of the building next to Pizza Patron. The interior of this location also seems smaller and less roomy than the other one. There was a long line when we walked in that went fairly quickly. The food here is on par with the other location, which is a good thing. I got the #21 Bistek a la Mexicana with corn tortillas, which is my usual order at the Mayhill location. We had about 10 orders in front of ours but we were able to get our order in less than 10 minutes. Our food and tortillas came out very hot and fresh. While this location is much closer to where I live and work, it seems much busier, which would push me more towards the other location if I had a choice. If you've never been to either location, I highly recommend going and trying out their food!

Good food but feels a bit like a "chain" restaurant. Nice size portions. Wanted to try as many different places as I could while in town. Convenient location on University Blvd.

One of my favorite Taquerias in Denton, if not of all time. Often I contemplate going full vegan, but it means I would not be able to come here anymore, and I just can't cope with that. I can vouch for the small mom and pop shops in Denton as well, and while Monterrey has opened up a couple more locations I. The surrounding areas, they are by no means a big franchise. I think the fact that they have multiple locations actually creates more of a drive for them to be consistent. Where you might have chewy meat one day or mushy rice on occasion at other Taquerias, I have had the same consistency every single visit here, since the first day I came. The one thing that changes is the temperature of both the salsas, but that's just the nature of making your own salsas. With confidence I can say I have never had a single piece of weird funky meat here. I've tried every meat, except for chorizo, because chorizo can get a little greasy for me no matter where you go. The carne asada is so tender, and has so much flavor on its own. The chicken can lean on the dryer side, but that's only because they use white meat breast. A touch of salsa and lime juice, makes it the best chicken in town. The carnitas are also a fantastic option here. I would say those three meats are my favorite here, and I typically get the three taco plate with rice and beans. I've also had my fair share of Gorditas, sopes, and tortas. All of it has been very tasty. Their beans and rice are not my favorite in town, but they are totally acceptable. I have had a sampling of some of their agua frescas as well. Some flavors are more on the sweeter side, so I usually pair tacos with a Mexican coke! If you have been debating on stopping in, because they are a chain, or because they aren't hidden in a corner, do yourself a favor and come on in.

Worst customer service I've ever had here I specifically asked for no onions on my tacos and everything was fine. I get home , let me add after a long day. I look in the box and sure enough it's loaded with onions so I drive all the way back and the girl at the counter told me "okay and ? You couldn't of just taken the onions off yourself" I replied no that's what I asked for no onions. And then she just stared at me honestly I used to love this place now I will never bring my family here again !!! 12-3-21

Carne guisada
Carolyn G.

I had the carne guisada and was NOT impressed. The pieces of meat were huge and not cut up. Bite size pieces are the best especially if it was meant to be eaten with tortillas. The flavor was okay. I definitely would not order this again. My coworker had the chicken quesadillas and said they were good. I probably won't be back.

Street Tacos (steak, chicken, and pastor)

I am a big fan of authentic Mexican food. So, while in Texas, I was set on finding a location to quench my appetite. We were in Denton visiting my extended family and found an opportunity to make a pit stop in Taqueria Monterrey. I love their big menu on the back wall. Not only are there descriptions, but there are also pictures of the items. I think this would help any gringo trying to decide what he/she wanted to order. I decided on the three tacos, beans, and rice. I ordered corn tortillas (of course) and ordered one chicken, one steak, and one pastor. The tacos are comparable to most 'street tacos' and come with cilantro and chopped onions. All three were great, but my favorite was the asada (steak). My wife would disagree and pick the chicken. The beans were good, but the rice was just OK. I would have ordered a churro, but thought that $1.50 each was a bit pricey (especially with 7 of us in my family). The staff were nice and friendly. There is plenty of seating (why we chose here as opposed to a different restaurant). I'd give them a solid rating and would come back if I had the opportunity. Happy Dining

La Fondita Denton - Golden Tacos are in the best!!! Authentic Mexican food

Everything we ordered was delicious. The guacamole tasted super fresh, the queso was flavorful and came in a generous portion, and the salsa had just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. The only small hiccup was the chips situation--they give you big portions of guac, queso, and salsa, but the chips come in a tiny bowl. (Literally 10 chips) very sad for 6 people to fight over so little of chips. Not a huge deal, just a bit surprising. We also tried the margaritas--they had great flavor, though they tasted absent of tequila. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would definitely go back...maybe next time we bring our own chips! :)

If I could give La Fondita Mexican Restaurant six stars, I would legally change the rating system…read morejust to make it happen. Let me set the scene: I walked in expecting a casual meal and maybe a decent taco. What I got instead was a borderline spiritual awakening wrapped in foil and served with rice and beans. First of all -- the giant piña colada. When they say giant, they are not messing around. This thing arrived like it had its own gravitational pull. I'm pretty sure I saw a small family of tourists orbiting it. One sip and I was transported to a beach that doesn't even exist on any map -- coconutty, icy perfection with just enough kick to make me briefly consider texting my boss that I've moved to an island and won't be returning. Then came the beans. Listen carefully: I don't throw this word around lightly -- perfect. These beans were so good I genuinely paused mid-bite and just stared into the middle distance reevaluating my entire life. Creamy, rich, seasoned like someone's abuela whispered ancient secrets into the pot. I would trust these beans with my taxes, my passwords, and honestly my emotional well-being. And the corn tortillas... dear lord, the corn tortillas. I have had tortillas in many places, including at my own abuela's table -- and saying this feels like confessing a sin -- but these might be the best I've ever had besides abuela's. Warm, soft, slightly charred in all the right places, like they were handmade by someone who has been perfecting this craft since before I was born and possibly before electricity was invented. If I could build a house out of these tortillas, I would. I would live there. Happily. And then--just when I thought things couldn't escalate further--the huevos rancheros arrived. Eggs cooked to that perfect sweet spot where the yolk still has a little rebellion left in it, laid over a bed of everything that matters, all tied together with a sauce that refuses to be anything less than unforgettable. It's the kind of breakfast that makes you question why you ever settle for anything less in life. Comforting, bold, and somehow both rustic and wildly impressive at the same time. Everything else on the plate? Outstanding. Rice that actually deserves to be eaten and not just politely ignored. Salsa that sneaks up on you like, "oh this is nice--OH okay there it is." Service? Friendly, fast, and somehow emotionally supportive. Atmosphere? The kind of place where you immediately feel like a regular even if it's your first time. Final verdict: If you are anywhere within a 50-mile radius of Denton and you are not eating at La Fondita Mexican Restaurant, you are making a series of deeply questionable life choices. I came in hungry. I left changed.

We started things off right with chips, jalapeño ranch dip, and queso, which is honestly the only proper way to begin a Chuy's visit. The queso was warm, creamy, and exactly what my soul needed, and the chips with that jalapeño ranch were the cherry on top. Speaking of cherries, we also got the Tito's cherry limeade, and it was the spring we didn't know we needed to bounce. Crisp, cold, a little dangerous in the cutest way, and honestly adorable -- the perfect little kick to start the meal. Our waiter was top notch: kind, attentive, and somehow always there right when we needed something without ever hovering. That kind of service makes the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable. For food, we ordered the Baja shrimp tacos, and when I say the shrimp is BIG, I mean it (and no, we're definitely not out here flattering any men ). The shrimp was cooked perfectly, flavorful, and absolutely the star of the plate. They came with rice and beans, and even though I forgot to ask for the cilantro lime rice , I was still super happy with everything. We also got the steak fajita Tex-Mex burrito bowl, and every single bite just kept getting better. The steak was tender, packed with flavor, and once it all got mixed together with the salsa and scooped up on the crispy tostada, it was perfection. This meal was such a good reminder of why Chuy's became a favorite for me in the first place -- fun atmosphere, great food, amazing service, and one of those dinners that just hits from the first chip to the last bite.
