Such a great experience. Food was amazing! I got the Asada tacos, my son had the asada torta and hubby got alpastor torta! I went for breakfast tacos. Egg cheese and bacon or sausage. With salsa. It is surprising difficult to get such an item that is done correctly. Taqueria Monterrey did it. They were a decent size, well seasoned, hot. I added salsa to them which had some heat. $3.50 per taco. The employees were courteous and quick. It's got a hole in the wall strip mall thing going. Who cares? It was very clean. The breakfast tacos were the winners. Delicious. read more

I've been to soooo many taquerias and while the food here wasn't too bad, there were a couple of things that were really odd to me...1 if you love tacos (like me) they don't sell individual tacos...I go for the tacos and don't care about the rice and beans and only options were $11 for 3 tacos, rice, and beans.. Or $13 for 5 tacos... They have flan that I would have gotten instead of all 5 tacos, but this is the only one I've seen that doesn't sell tacos individually (my usual order is 4 tacos of different meats and some sort of dessert or elote). They did let me pick 5 different meats for the tacos, at least. The pollo was a bit bland, but the carnitas were so juicy it squirted liquid all over when took a bite, so that's good, though the barbacoa was kinda dry. I wasn't a huge fan of the Al Pastor, though the Asada was pretty good. One thing I found odd was that they put a small chunk of potato in with the order as well. Overall not worth the $13 since the tacos while good flavor, were small and that's upwards of $2.50 per taco which is even a little high for the current economy and they need to sell individual tacos and not just 2 plates with tacos (as I mentioned earlier) read more

SUMMARY: For people who live in the "tonier" parts of town who say "There's no good Mexican food in North Dallas", well get out of your bubble and come to Denton. There's plenty of quality Mexican eateries out here! BACKGROUND: Consider this particular TM one of my go-to places for good Mexican food. While the parking is a little tight, the food is worth it. FOOD: Really good. Quality ingredients, always hot, never had a bad meal here. Reminds me of and what I'm used to eating back in LA. They serve up tacos (doubled corn tortillas) with cilantro and chopped onions. Their asada is my favorite but their al pastor and carnitas is pretty good too. I wasn't impressed with their lengua as the time I had it, it tasted like it had been sitting too long (mushy texture). What's nice about this place is that they give you some sliced cucumber, a lime, but also a nice little potato wedge AND AND AND! A grilled green chile :) This is the only place in the area so far that gives you this nice bit of value add. Also they have no issues giving me double rice vs rice and beans. While I like refried beans, most days I try not to eat it lest I smoke out my coworker haha. SERVICE: The people who run this place are great. Much better than the other TM down near the Medical City off I-35E (south of Buc'ees). ATMOSPHERE: Typical, nothing fancy. PARKING: Be careful parking in the parallel spots that run parallel with University. While I haven't seen an accident, I've seen big trucks almost hit cars parked in those spaces. RETURN VISIT? More than I care to admit :) This place is great and I highly recommend you give it a try. read more

Worth a visit for authentic Mexican food. Parking a little tight out front. Bring the smaller car if you have a choice. Basic fare, on styrofoam plates with plastic utensils. But the tacos I had were excellent with well seasoned carnitas topped with chopped onions and cilantro. Two pieces of lime. Provided a nice citrus finish. Refried beans all they have, as well as the rice, were nothing to write home about. But surprisingly the platter was garnished with grilled onions, a roasted potatoe and a delicious roasted pepper! Really well done. Chips and salsa also good Definitely recommend this spot and a steady stream of diners, many Mexican, apparently agree! read more

This was my first time to this location after being to the Mayhill location many times. My first impression is that the parking situation is much worse at this location than the other one. I ended up finding parking around the side of the building next to Pizza Patron. The interior of this location also seems smaller and less roomy than the other one. There was a long line when we walked in that went fairly quickly. The food here is on par with the other location, which is a good thing. I got the #21 Bistek a la Mexicana with corn tortillas, which is my usual order at the Mayhill location. We had about 10 orders in front of ours but we were able to get our order in less than 10 minutes. Our food and tortillas came out very hot and fresh. While this location is much closer to where I live and work, it seems much busier, which would push me more towards the other location if I had a choice. If you've never been to either location, I highly recommend going and trying out their food! read more

Do you like a side of attitude to go along with an incorrect order? If so, this is your place. The young woman behind the counter with the fake lashes is rude. I just asked if they were still serving breakfast tacos and was met with attitude. Fyi, apparently they are all premade and sold all day. She didn't convey that, I figured it out here. I ordered two different tacos to go, with green sauce. Apparently it doesn't matter what you order, you're getting chorizo. Also at $2.77 a pop, even in these pandemic times, that is a lot for a premade breakfast taco. And they should update their website with the price increases. The tacos tasted ok, nothing remarkable about it. The green sauce was a winner, though. Also, they have a sign when you walk in asking you to please wear a mask inside. Yeah, I was the ONLY one wearing a mask and it was just me and the employees there. I don't know if this was just burnout from New Year or what, but this experience sucked. read more

One of my favorite Taquerias in Denton, if not of all time. Often I contemplate going full vegan, but it means I would not be able to come here anymore, and I just can't cope with that. I can vouch for the small mom and pop shops in Denton as well, and while Monterrey has opened up a couple more locations I. The surrounding areas, they are by no means a big franchise. I think the fact that they have multiple locations actually creates more of a drive for them to be consistent. Where you might have chewy meat one day or mushy rice on occasion at other Taquerias, I have had the same consistency every single visit here, since the first day I came. The one thing that changes is the temperature of both the salsas, but that's just the nature of making your own salsas. With confidence I can say I have never had a single piece of weird funky meat here. I've tried every meat, except for chorizo, because chorizo can get a little greasy for me no matter where you go. The carne asada is so tender, and has so much flavor on its own. The chicken can lean on the dryer side, but that's only because they use white meat breast. A touch of salsa and lime juice, makes it the best chicken in town. The carnitas are also a fantastic option here. I would say those three meats are my favorite here, and I typically get the three taco plate with rice and beans. I've also had my fair share of Gorditas, sopes, and tortas. All of it has been very tasty. Their beans and rice are not my favorite in town, but they are totally acceptable. I have had a sampling of some of their agua frescas as well. Some flavors are more on the sweeter side, so I usually pair tacos with a Mexican coke! If you have been debating on stopping in, because they are a chain, or because they aren't hidden in a corner, do yourself a favor and come on in. read more

Always great food here no matter what I order. Great service and hot food. I've been to the other locations, but beware on the parking situation at this one. It shares a parking lot with other places and there aren't a lot of spots. I ordered the flautas, they come with three chicken with lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. Lots of it on top of your flautas. It's pretty much a salad at that point. Rice and refried beans are really good. They don't doctor the rice much. Like there are no veggies or corn, it's just plain Mexican rice with great flavor. There is a fridge with different salsas you can use and you just go pick it out of the fridge. This place can get pretty busy in the evenings. read more

This place was shit! 1. The menu on the wall DOES NOT match the menu taped yo the counter by the register. 2. They skipped my order and it took the 30 freaking minutes. 3. I had the carne guisada and was NOT impressed. The pieces of meat were huge and not cut up. Bite size pieces are the best especially if it was meant to be eaten with tortillas. The flavor was okay. I am a big fan of authentic Mexican food. So, while in Texas, I was set on finding a location to quench my appetite. We were in Denton visiting my extended family and found an opportunity to make a pit stop in Taqueria Monterrey. I love their big menu on the back wall. Not only are there descriptions, but there are also pictures of the items. I think this would help any gringo trying to decide what he/she wanted to order. I decided on the three tacos, beans, and rice. I ordered corn tortillas (of course) and ordered one chicken, one steak, and one pastor. The tacos are comparable to most 'street tacos' and come with cilantro and chopped onions. All three were great, but my favorite was the asada (steak). My wife would disagree and pick the chicken. The beans were good, but the rice was just OK. I would have ordered a churro, but thought that $1.50 each was a bit pricey (especially with 7 of us in my family). The staff were nice and friendly. There is plenty of seating (why we chose here as opposed to a different restaurant). I'd give them a solid rating and would come back if I had the opportunity. Happy Dining read more

Taqueria Monterrey - Street Tacos (steak, chicken, and pastor) - Mexican Near Me - Denton, Texas

I had a goal of 365 reviews in my first year on Yelp and I am really glad I made it while also solving a mystery. I had been to the original location on Mayhill last year, which does a mean breakfast taco, and thought they had moved to University. By use of my terrible high school Spanish skills I finally realized they expanded and the University location is a second location that opened earlier this year. We were starving, and since my husband and I can always agree on Mexican (as opposed to his affinity for pizza and mine for sushi) he suggested "that one place we saw by Pizza Patron" that led to my investigation of how many Taqueria Monterreys ARE there? Anyway, with the back story out of the way, we arrived shortly before they opened at 8am on a Sunday. They are located between the Pizza Patron and the UPS store on the corner of Locust and University. Since there is a median on University that prevents you from crossing if you are headed east and Locust is a one way street, we cut through the CVS parking lot. There was one woman working up front and one person in the kitchen, and the front person was continuing to stock and clean throughout our time there. When getting to the register at the counter, I didn't see the breakfast tacos ready to go and asked if they were only serving breakfast at that time. We were so glad to hear they serve the entire menu all day since my husband isn't a breakfast person, and I can't have eggs, so I usually have to customize. I got the #4 with 3 tacos, rice and beans for $6.99. I went with carnitas, barbacoa and pastor. She kindly asked if I wanted onions and cilantro, which I declined due to the early hour and also to taste, and judge, the meat better. My husband got a #6 ground beef quesadilla for $6.99, which was offered with veggies, or rice and beans. We shared a large soda for $2.50 because I noticed the Agua Fresca too late. The fountain is self service with free refills, yay! They have individually wrapped plastic ware next to the fountain. There is a healthy mix of tables and booths with napkins and salt on each. There is a cooler with bottled sodas and a small selection of cake. This cooler is where you can help yourself to their red and green sauce as well. We waited 22 minutes before our order was brought out to the table. The person after us received what appeared to be one or two breakfast tacos 5-10 minutes before we got our food. The couple that ordered third, got their food much later, and it also appeared to be lunch items. I cannot be sure if the slow service was being slow and not having completed prep work, or if it was because they were only prepared for breakfast orders, which would make sense. We were in no hurry and I appreciate our food was extremely fresh. If you are in a time crunch, like a 30 minute break, I would suggest snagging a to go menu and calling ahead to be safe. I have to admit, when the food arrived, I was skeptical at the value because the portion size seemed small, especially the sides. I didn't think it would fill us up and was wondering if it was worth the $17 we had spent. I was wrong... very wrong. Neither of us could clean our Styrofoam plates and we tried! My husband's quesadilla had a decent amount of ground beef and was just greasy enough to taste really good. He managed to finish his quesadilla, but left half the rice and beans behind. The barbacoa was outstanding! It was delicious and had amazing flavor! The carnitas were less flavorful, but extremely good! The carnitas were a tad dry, so I imagine they are normally as flavorful as the barbacoa. The pastor was way too greasy and nearly invaded the other items on the plate, making me rush to grab napkins to soak it up. The pastor didn't have the flavor I expected and was bland compared to the other two. On its own, I probably would have said it was okay. They included a fried potato, which was a nice touch. The rice and beans tasted very good and complimented my dish nicely! It was an enjoyable meal, but I could only eat 3/4 of it. Both meals were well worth the $6.99! Since my food was seasoned well, I didn't need sauce, but sampled both. Neither is spicy, if that's what you're looking for. My husband had more, and said though they tasted good, neither had much of a kick. With so many taquerias in Denton, how do they stack up? Well, service was a bit slower than other places, so maybe not an option if I have a busy day. The pastor didn't measure up to other spots, I would say Taco Rico has the best in town. Value wise, they dont have lunch a la carte items or the cheapest prices, that would go to La Sobracita. Yet the value of their meal was very good, we left so full we had to take a nap! I'm still full hours later! That alone is a reason to return, as is the fact that my meal was so flavorful. The best reason for me? That barbacoa is the best I've had in Denton by a long shot! 4 1/2 stars! So, yes, I will return and I recommend! read more

The place is located in a strip shopping center sandwiched between la Kandies (sells piñatas band Mexican candy) and a panaderia (Mexican bakery). Clean inside with plenty of seating. A few tables outside as well. Large menu of taco options. Tried asada, pollo, and al pastor tacos. Didn't disappoint. Came out fast and meat was seasoned perfectly. Salsa verde was really good as well. Kinda on the pricier side as far as taquerias go - Mexican coke & six tacos was $20. Regardless of the higher price, It was quality food & i will go back. read more

Have to update my review to say that Taqueria Monterrey is the best overall taqueria in town. Every taqueria offers something specific that they're good at, and I feel like Taqueria Monterrey has a hefty number of "bests" in town. Chances are if you try something here, you're going to leave happy. They have the best flautas, gorditas, carnitas, nopales, caldo de res, etc. I've never had major issues with consistency here, and I've never been disappointed. None of their protein choices have been bad, bland, or chewy. All have been great, but my personal favourites are the carnitas, asada, barbacoa, and nopales. Their carnitas are juicy and taste clean. It doesn't have that gamey taste you get from older pigs. Their asada is well seasoned and tender. Their barbacoa is juicy and tender. It's more meaty than fatty, which aligns with my preference. Their nopales are the stewed variety and vegetarian (confirmed with staff). Despite it's lack of meat, it packs a great umami punch. It is the best stewed nopales option in town, but definitely very messy. Their chicken is well seasoned and tender. It's one of the better options in town, but it's still not the most flavourful protein option here. Their pastor is great, but once again, not the best in town. I love the other options, so for that reason alone I rarely get pastor. I've been comparing flautas across town recently, and theirs are the best so far. Their flautas are generously packed with white meat chicken, perfectly cooked, and both salsas pair well with them. Comparing to other taquerias in town, they weren't so generous on their lettuce, tomato, and cheese topping. They also use sour cream instead of crema, but it automatically comes on the side. That helps keep them crispy, and you have a little more control on how much you want to use. Their caldo de res is a personal addiction of mine during the winter months or when I'm sick. The broth is comforting, the meat and veggies are generous, and they give a decent bit of sides to accompany the soup. It's always too much for me to handle, and I have a hefty appetite. For their chilaquiles, it appears they use their green and red salsas. I typically think the green salsa is milder when using it for my tacos, while the red is spicier. When ordering the green chilaquiles though, it was VERY spicy. I can only imagine the red version would be more so. I still really enjoyed the asada chilaquiles, despite my pain and tears. For reference I can handle a decent bit of spice, but I don't love drowning in it. No matter what I order, I always get at least one carnitas gordita. It is my FAVOURITE taqueria item to get across all joints in town. Their gordita shell is one of the thickest and crispiest in town, which makes it a great companion for their wet carnitas. The lettuce, tomato, and cheese do a great job balancing out the dense nature of the meat and fried shell as well. Top it off with some of their green salsa and you're set. More times than not, I'll also order a side of rice. This is one of the few joints in town where I'll go out of my way to add rice, since it's one of my favourites in town. It's a pretty standard Mexican rice. No fancy peas, corn, or carrots added in. Some days it's a bit too greasy, but I still love it. To each their own. I will say though, that I'm not a fan of their breakfast tacos, burritos or agua frescas. Their breakfast tacos and burritos aren't necessarily bad, they're just not the best in town. I'd rather hit up Veronica's Cafe, La Fondita, La Estrella, or Casa Galaviz for breakfast tacos. Their pina agua fresca tastes like 7up that's lost its carbonation, so I tend to skip it here. Also while this location has been nothing but great, the Mayhill location is generally better. Word of caution for the wise- Start off with small bites when eating the roasted jalapeno.. Those suckers are deceiving.. read more

Ordered steak tacos on flour, not really a fan of corn tortillas. They have a large menu on the wall for you to view. Plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your meal. The employee taking my order was personable, so that was a plus. Now to the tacos...the meat is cut in small chunks, with veggies on the side, in my case grilled onions . A potato is cut in half, along with cilantro on the side. The meat had some flavor, was moist but not dry either. If that makes sense. It needed a little more seasoning in my opinion. The green salsa is good, but hot. So don't just pour it without trying it first. Otherwise the porcelain throne will be calling your name. If you love spicy, you will like that salsa. Overall it was an ok taco, not the best, but not the worst. read more
