We were traveling from out of town and were craving Mexican food. Saw great reviews for this restaurant and decided stop in on a Saturday night. The place was pretty empty, but the staff was friendly and welcoming. The food however, was not great. I ordered the tacos, which were pretty bland and flavorless, and the tortillas were old. My brother's dish came out cold, the margaritas didn't have enough kick in them... I would say the only thing we really enjoyed about the restaurant was their homemade hot sauce. Was really hoping to like this place as I love supporting local businesses. Perhaps we just came on our off night, but we definitely did not enjoy our food experience at this location. read more

Actually found this place here on Yelp while casually looking for somewhere to eat after a day of shopping and it was phenomenal! We just moved back home after living in Charlotte for 14 years & having tons of restaurants around, so we were a little skeptical at first but the food here was 10x better than any Mexican restaurant we ever ate at in Charlotte. Highly recommend the ACP with added pico & avocado. The salsa was perfect, the margarita was delightful (and as big as my head), and after I told the waitress we were celebrating my birthday she talked me into trying their Tres Leches cake and it was DELICIOUS. All the staff was super helpful and kind as well. 10/10, we will definitely be back! read more

Ok. The salsa was pretty standard. Cheese dip was ok. Had several different tacos and they were all good. Nice little place. Nothing was bad and nothing was outstanding. The food is great but let's talk about dessert first. The Tres Leches Cakes are absolutely divine, so much we ordered two whole ones for our thanksgiving dinner. Back to the typical food you think of when you go to a Mexican restaurant, the portions are plentiful and prices good. One thing I have come to expect at Mexican restaurants though is a lunch menu which they don't have. Real deal, folks. Real deal. Four of us showed up to eat, and boy, did we! Started out with fresh chips and salsa. Got some spinach dip. The chips are fresh, and so was the salsa. We got refill chips straight out of the fryer, and they were grease free. Then we placed our orders. Sopes! They have sopes! The thick, handmade tortilla was crisped by the grill on the outside, and soft in the center. The beans were awesome, and believe every word you hear about the Al Pastor: beautifully seasoned and tender. I had two Mexican style tacos: one chicken, the other with Carne Asada. Both nicely done. My husband got the chicken mole. How many times do you hear people remark on how good the rice and beans are? They are really good. The chicken was shredded, moist, and tasty. The mole was super flavorful, and lighter than most dark moles I've seen. Passed the mole challenge. Check. My daughter got the carnitas, and said the same thing about the rice and beans. Definitely not an afterthought here. The pork was perfectly seasoned and tender. Generous serving. My son-in-law got the torta with Carne Asada. It.Was.Huge. He's a big guy, and he polished it off with gusto. We all shared some guacamole, which was very tasty as well. We finished it out with one slice of chocoflan. What's a chocoflan, you ask? Well, it's a moist chocolate cake with a layer of flan on top. Win! Win! The only thing this place lacks is a skyhook to hoist us out of the booth when we were done. When all was said and done, the check came out to a tad over $56. I hope this place takes off like gangbusters, because when we come back at Christmas time to visit, I think I want to try one of the caldos. read more

This is the BEST Mexican food I've had on the East Coast. I'm from Los Angeles, and after traveling through New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Virginia, I can finally rest. I've found great authentic Mexican food 2000 miles from home. The cook is from Mexico which makes a huge difference. Their chorizo and lengua tacos are amazing and authentic, like off a track truck in LA. Their pastor is a house favorite (not as good as LA, but it does the job). And all the other meats I tried were delicious too. I also had they flautas which were the best I've had since LA. Biting into that first taco I almost cried. It's been years since I've been home, which means it's been YEARS since I've had a decent freaking taco. Seriously, how hard is it to make a decent street taco? Apparently, it's rocket science. But luckily, this restaurant cracked the code. If you want really authentic Mexican food, you won't find a better restaurant on the East Coast! read more

Beware most of the great reviews of this place are from before they moved locations. Their food was much better prior to their move. This place was comparable to any authentic taqueria, but is slowly shifting more toward the "Casa Bonita" vibe. I went on taco tuesday for $1 mini tacos, and they are not kidding when they say mini. We ordered cheese dip to start us out, and it took around 5 minutes for us to get this, by which time we'd already eaten most of our chips with the salsa. The waitress was kind and said she would get us some more chips. I didn't realize this meant "I'll go bus some tables and chat with the other waitress for a while and set a few tables and check on your table again before remembering to bring some chips". I ordered 3 al pastor, 3 chicken, and 1 shrimp taco. The al pastor came with a decent scoop of meat on each, no complaints. However, each chicken taco had 2-3 very tiny bites of chicken. The chicken looked like frozen chicken thighs that had been boiled - no seasoning at all. I was hoping the shrimp tacos were battered and deep-fried or at least pan fried but instead I received more boiled unseasoned nonsense. My girlfriend ordered a chalupa with rice and beans- she did not seem impressed. Presentation was lazy, with sour cream half in and half out of the laid out chalupa. She let me know their was no seasoning in the dry ground beef as well. We went to this restaurant many times prior to their move and had entirely positive experiences. We were looking forward to the new more spacious location as they'd been hyping it up for some time. This was our first trip to the new location and will be our last. read more

The best authentic Mexican food in north central WV period. I've only been once and will update after more visits, but these folks are the real deal. My Mexican style tacos were just like they came off the best food trucks I've ever visited. The meat (a had chorizo, al pastor, and carne asada) was fresh, flavorful and seasoned perfectly. The sauces were great -- I loved the medium heat red Serrano sauce and it had a bit of sweetness to it. My wife has flauta that was delicately deep fried. I literally hugged Federico the owner -- I had been craving authentic street tacos for weeks and this was just what the doctor ordered. This place is magical! It was my first visit and even just walking in I *knew* that this wasn't just another cookie cutter Mexican place. The atmosphere was causal, and I felt weirdly at home and happy just from walking in the door. The food is authentic and so delicious. Two words: Taco Tuesday. I'm from around here, but I currently live in Houston. Anytime I see a new place open up for global cuisine, I give it a shot when I'm in town to see how it stands up to the food in Houston, where it seems like literally the entire globe has a food presence. So, when I see a taqueria open up, I'm expecting Mexican style street tacos, tortas, etc. And this place has some awesome tacos. On Tuesday, they have mini tacos for $1. Try all the meats that sound good to you. They even have tripa and lingua on the menu (tripe and cow tongue) if you're feeling adventurous. My faves are the tacos al pastor (very nicely spiced pork) and the carnitas. Service is great, and the servers are very friendly and amicable. One really hit it off with my daughter. Everything is pretty mild, which fits with what a taqueria provides (the heat is always in the salsa). If anything, I would have liked some spicier versions of their very well balanced and flavorful verde and smoked pepper salsas. All in all, my favorite Mex-Mex in this area, and Taco Tuesday will be in my rotation. read more

I can't say enough about this place! They have super friendly staff, a fun atmosphere and authentic Mexican food. I am a vegetarian and they are always up for making anything I want without meat. The Mexican mule is also delicious. I haven't tried the dulce de leche cake but I know that it is well-liked by the customers. My wife and I grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. Taqueria Lou Lou is the only Mexican place in town we like. We've been eating there for a couple years now - since before the move to their new location. In Nutter Fort and it's always consistently good food and service. Street tacos and fajitas are favorites. The fresh homemade Tres Leches cakes are awesome! Wow! This place is fantastic!! Guacamole is made in house, the Al pastor is a great option for meat in any of their items. I have had the Mexican tacos which were smaller than the American sized portions we are use to but they are great! I've also had the "Mexican Hoagie" and it is AMAZING!
