As with all our adventures, Mexican food as our first meal is the tradition. And this place is terrific. I had (as always) the enchiladas and they were very good. The Alaska Verde was tasty and the guacamole was smooth and tasty. My wife got the pork cublette burrito and that was amazing. The pork was chunky and has succulent pork flavor that sang in your mouth. This alone is worth the visit. Service was friendly and prompt. The price point was also excellent. I'm certainly glad that I stopped here! Wasn't at all planned, just a nice "accident". It was busy on a Friday not night, lots of families and a large table of 12 or more ladies celebrating a birthday by the looks of it. I was seated without a wait and was tended to with the best service throughout the meal. The food came out quickly and perfectly prepared. The larger party had no effect at all on the level of service. The table side guacamole was delicious and customizable Al the I asked for it to include everything because I like it "chunky". The carne asada was a generous serving size and tender. I would have preferred more of a char grilled flavor, but it's well worth ordering. We live in NC. I grew up in Clarksburg and still come back to visit my mom. Found it very interesting that El Ray had the exact same menu as our local Mexican restaurant back home in NC. We refer to this as the "standard Mexican restaurant menu". You can't go wrong with the "Speedy" for lunch. Exact same as in NC. The margaritas were pretty good. Price was right for what we got. They have special prices in the evening but we were here for lunch today. No margarita specials at lunch time. Food was (per normal) bland and unseasoned. If it wasn't for our desire to have a margarita we would of gotten Taco Bell takeout. Chips and salsa were plentiful. Wish the salsa was more spicy. read more

Stayed the night in Clarksburg and very near to the hotel is El Rey. Friendly little place next to super Walmart. Don't let the strip mall vibe stop you, really great staff and ver friendly. I had an early start the next day so I had a Negra Modelo at the bar while I waited for my to go order. Traditional Carnitas were amazing and flavorful. Went there at 2:30 on Sunday, August 4th, 2024 (after the rush) and the service was slow. Staff running around like they were lost. Finally ordered water with limes and got lemon instead. Order food....vegetarian #4 large bean burrito it came with ground beef mixed in with beans...made me sick. Wife's chicken taco was sub par as well....cheese was of low quality (cutting corners at the expense of customers). Never once was checked on after food delivered to see how things were.Had not been to this El Rey on Emily drive for over 4 years and most likely not ever going back...this experience has almost turned me against Mexican food and one time it was one of my favorites. read more

This is an awesome spot to hang out for a group dinner with amazing service and pretty good Mexican food. - Our servers were very friendly, certainly made sure we never ran out of chips and salsa (which were heavenly). They pretty much never missed a beat! Their service deserves 5 stars! - I ordered enchiladas tricolor filled with chicken stir fry, and I was a bit disappointed in the flavor profile. The chicken stir fry tasted like a Chinese stir fry dish, which overall tasted pretty good (great textures, chicken nicely seared), but definitely did not taste like Mexican food. The sauce was delicious, the corn tortilla was also amazing. I don't like to write bad reviews but I feel as if I Must here. I asked our server if their "Cadillac Margarita" had Gran Marnier or Gran gala(generic), he assured me that it did. When he brought it back, it was mostly pre-mix/sour/orange etc. Needless to say I asked him to make me a new one and inquired if I could help the bartender make it. As a former bartender I'm always offering to help make an appropriate drink. As I passed to go to the bathroom he was making my drink at the bar and he couldn't find the Gran Marnier....the same liquor that he guaranteed was in my Cadillac(not to mention that I paid extra to have in my drink). I pointed to where it was and he had to get a ladder to reach it......hmmm....he's the bartender, he said he made my first with plenty of Gran Marnier, and then he couldn't locate it and had to climb for it???? Had I have not known my liquors I would have paid $16 for something that Did Not have any in it! As far as the food, their sauces(for enchiladas etc) tasted like they were straight from the can and the chili rellano was half cooked. The staff was nice, but I don't tolerate being lied to, and that was before I tasted the tasteless food. read more

LOVED this restaurant!!! Who would've thought that one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to would be found in West Virginia!!! This place is so unassuming from the outside - especially since it's located in a strip mall. But don't let that deter you. On a road trip from Ohio and found this restaurant on yelp. Great service. We had the table guacamole and it was outstanding!! We had multiple menu items and all were very good. Vegetarian burrito, fajitas and the Burrito Cancun. Everything had great flavor the only comment was the shrimp in the burrito was a little over cooked. Where do I begin.. Tamales -are nice and heavy, good amount of pork filling, fluffy masa. For $2 it's a good deal. You taste the love. Chili relleno -is good. Well cooked chili still has some bite. It's loaded with oey gooey cheese. I forget the price but it was a side $2-$4.. this is a side!!!! That's crazy!! If you get this you won't be leaving sad. I PROMISE. Also the sauce it's more tomatoey, not too spicy at all. Rice & beans -look underwhelming, but have the taste of flavor town. Authentic rice & beans. Well cooked well seasoned. Just wish there was more for $4 total. Still not a bad deal tho. Panza verde burrito- for the main course.. When I think of a verde burrito, I think spicy. This is not. It's kinda of weird a taste In the verde salsa. It has the same taste as when I ate a weed edible rice crispy treat and it was overpowering. Where you can taste it.. I have not tasted this anywhere else lol. it's different. The filling is very good. Lots of pulled pork. Good slice of tomato and avocado. I'd try something else next time tho personally. Lastly, this $24 meal came with two bags of chips & salsa! The two on left are mild tomato & the right tastes like a spicy red pepper sauce. I'm not sure what it's for, chips or burrito? Lots of vegetarian options on the menu. I really did not expect much. The chips were fresh and crisp and solid. The salsa was wonderful. Lots of fresh cilantro and onions in it. Not too hot.
