I do love me my low sugar milk tea made from black tea which was the reason I ended up here. I had the regular milk tea with no boba and 1/4 sweet. It was a good drink, not to sweet, just the way I like it and with a good subtle black tea flavor. It was creamy and milky and quite refreshing. It did need more ice however because it melted really quickly, so I had the you lady put more in it before I hit the road. I did not stay long given they were playing their music quite loudly. Normally, It does not bother me but this time I was in the mood for piece and quite while enjoyed my milk tea. This review is only for the food. This is by far my favorite TapEx. It definitely has changed over the years BUT still my fav. I always get the extra spicy crispy chicken combo w/ green tea & French fries (extra crispy) & cream cheese wontons. They need to bring back their chicken wings but overall I'm never disappointed! Good customer service and perfect locations 4 stars because they don't any of the yogurt frost drinks and it's kind of small inside not many seats available. Usually order the frost drinks here and the crispy chicken. The slickness isn't consistent but no complaints here. I always get the extra spicy. Sometimes it's hella hot and sometimes it's just right. They have extra dipping sauces; ranch, sweet and sour, buffalo and I forgot the rest. Lol. My go-to boba place! They have really good snow bubbles -- my favorites are lavender matcha, almond milk, and chai vanilla. The normal milk teas are yummy too, I just usually prefer snow bubbles. Their boba is pretty good, I've had better but I've definitely had worse too. Surprisingly, I haven't tried any of their food yet, perhaps I should. Given that it's located in College Area, it gets pretty busy on weekends and sometimes even weekday nights, so just keep that in mind. It's kinda small inside too, so maybe don't expect to sit down and enjoy your drink if you come during peak times. I have visited about 4 of the locations in San Diego. This location is just not that impressive. Service was normal as you ordered your items, they charge, gave you a number..no other words exchanged... The food was really upsetting..because all I order is crispy chicken, and they don't taste fresh at all...not even close. If you eat chicken a lot, you will know the gross aftertaste of the fired chicken. Been there twice, order 5 ordered, toss out 3 orders both times...I'm done. Never going back. read more

I didn't even make it inside. Whoever I talked to owner/manager male. I understand with the COVID-19, they should be more organized&informative. I called& was told I couldn't make a phone order even though I was outside, but gladly will help me quickly. I noticed there was a line, I called back& asked the same person if there was a line to order because I have a newborn&5yr old in the car &I don't want them waiting long. He said no line, those people are just waiting for their drinks. I walked up &the line was to order drinks.. so not only did he lie to me to get my business, but the customer in line said no one even came out& checked to even know there was a line. Cashiers are always very accommodating, for instance; I wanted an almond icy (which only exists as a snow), even though it was an uncommon request they found a way to make it for me. Been coming here for years and have never had a problem! This location is smaller than the rest, but I think it's perfect. The ambiance is very casual, people come and go quickly, and it's just a one stop shop for a quick boba fix. The cashiers/employees are quick, friendly, and courteous. Not as big as the Convoy location but I don't mind going here whenever I'm in the area. Yes, it is dirtier than other locations (sticky tables, dirty floors and avoid touching the door, if you can). The crowd is younger, since it's near SDSU but the girls who work are are always very nice and friendly. My go to is always the Passion Fruit Green Tea w/boba & rainbow jelly. Disappointed that they don't have yogurt frost, like their other locations, but their other drink options make up for it when I'm in the mood for something different. Love that it's located in a strip mall with lots of good restaurants/eateries so that when I'm done eating, I just walk across the way for some boba. read more

The first time I've ever visited a boba shop was the Tapioca Express in Convoy so I'm always grateful that one opened up near SDSU closer to where I live. Due to nostalgia, this place is always the first place I think of when I'm craving boba drinks. The food and drinks are always inconsistent. Sometimes chicken is too dry and sometimes juicy. The service here is great! Very fast and efficient. While I was completing my purchase, they had the drink already made and waiting for me. I ordered a Milk Tea with boba - the drinks themselves are mediocre at best at this location. Another bummer is the sides included in their combo meals, you get corn and edamame whereas at the other store in Convoy they come with a fried egg and mixed greens. Nah. This location is nasty. I ordered a mango milk tea and it came out brown. Nasty. Tasted like a mixture of different fruits but not mango. I asked the girl who called my name out to switch it for a Thai tea cuz I didn't like it. I was happy they were able and willing to do it. I went up again to make sure they didn't add boba and the Asian girl at the register responded by saying, "just so you know, we're not allowed to do that." Me: do what? Asian girl: switch them out. I am definitely a fan, before there was only one Tapex in San Diego and now there are so many! Since the laundry mat is only a few stores away I typically get my crispy chicken and boba fix once everything is getting washed. The staff are all really nice and it's pretty funny I find myself paying in quarters (after laundry) and they totally understand. Orders are fast and the team is super efficient, be warned that it can get busy since it's so close to SDSU. I typically order Lychee Icy with Lychee Jelly, definitely cools you down during the summer. They do have other options that are a bit creamier like a shake! Crispy chicken at a medium is the best to start for new comers, just so you get a little flavor. Definitely a must when I need a break during laundry day! read more

Probably one of the worst crispy chicken meals I've ever had at a Tapioca Express. I wouldn't have bothered eating more than just a couple of bites, but I had a full day class so I needed something to hold me over until dinner. I've had the chicken combo at a lot of Tap X locations so I know they all vary in the sides they gave you. I was a little surprised to see canned corn and edamame actually. For the price we pay you can give us something better! The edamame was COLD. Nothing more disappointing than eating a relatively warm meal with a cold side. I was half expecting to find a frozen edamame somewhere in the mix. The great thing about being in a college area is that there are lots of choices on where to eat. Skip dining here! read more
