I chose this shop because of the many positive reviews and I wanted to support local business. However, I had a very disappointing experience. Lack of Transparency, Disrespectful and Unprofessional. That's all I have to say about Tao. I brought my car in for a simple job: Replace the AF sensor (B1S1) to pass emissions, complete the inspection, and check a loose bracket near the rear wheel. I clearly explained the order of work. However, the wrong sensor was ordered, and the emissions test was performed before replacing it - resulting in a failure that COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. I had to comeback for re-inspection after replacing the sensor (about 200 miles running). Instead of addressing my original concerns, I was presented with additional costly issues (axle, brake caliber, spark plugs). This was confusing, as I had recently passed a PA enhanced inspection at another shop, and none of these issues were mentioned. I also double checked my maintenance paperwork at Lexus Dealer, my spark plugs were replaced at around 142,000 miles (current mileage ~183,000), which is within their normal lifespan. The spark plugs will usually last for 80,000-100,000 miles. A second shop confirmed there was no issue with them - a full diagnostic were performed. Moreover, the loose bracket, which is the first thing I asked him repaired, was NEVER FIXED. I don't think he did even pay attention to it. Communication was poor throughout. Calls and emails were not returned, and updates were unclear. When I asked for clarification about the new findings, in-person, the response felt dismissive and unprofessional rather than helpful with: "I can't say anything about other shops doing", "Do you trust me?", "Do you want to do it or not?". For the re-inspection (even with an appointment), I had to wait about 2 hours. After reviewing other 1-star feedback, it appears this may be a pattern - customers come in for a simple service but are advised to complete additional, costly repairs without clear explanation. I understand businesses need to make money, but customers deserve transparency, proper communication, and respect. At minimum, the original concerns should be addressed clearly before introducing new issues. Overall, I felt pressured into unnecessary repairs without sufficient explanation. I would recommend BE CAREFUL and NOT FALLING ON low inspection prices or some "good" high/five start ratings. read more

Avoid this shop for any mechanical repair. Tao is ignorant, unprofessional and irresponsible. I bought an old car which has been idle for 5 years and provided all information for a comprehensive inspection. I followed his recommendations and paid $1,100 for a series of work. At the first time I drove it on the highway, the engine overheated and smoked. I had to tow the car back to Tao's shop. He told me the issue was a coolant leak--but claimed he didn't check the cooling system because I didn't specifically request it. He insisted it was my fault. God, I know nothing about cars--that's exactly why I relied on him to inspect and identify issues-- especially critical ones like the coolant system. Maybe this shop is fine for cheap, basic maintenance, but I would not recommend them for any serious diagnosis or repair. read more

Have a bit of a complicated repair that I need done which is on average about $2k. Called ahead and asked twice if they could do it and was reassured that they could and that I could drop it off the next day. Dropped it off the next day and they once again reassured me that they could do it. Didn't hear back the rest of the day so I called them the next day and they decided they couldn't do the repair but that they could do $1k worth of other repairs that were all bogus and made up. Tao has competitive pricing, even compared to those in the lower end market. We have had 4 or 5 cars at his shop, but we also use other places. He has re-repaired for us when something wasn't right the first time, even though things are not always crystal clear in the car repair world. Communication is a bit difficult, but Tao is responsive when you call and calls you to confirm or deal with issues, so the problems are minimized. Tao's stock in trade is speed. Vehicles don't sit. I've had my car inspected here for 3 years in a row. I brought my car in for inspection this year and he found a leak/crack in the muffler pipe. Tao and his mechanics were able to fix the issue in one day, cleaning up the rust and welding together the crack. They also painted the whole exhaust to make it look clean and new. I went to PA State Inspection in Oct 2021, I was charged more than 600USD for replacing rear rotors, pads and calipers. Right after the service, the car lost its brake, I had to pump the brake pedal 2 to 3 times to get effective braking. I called the garage immediately and was told that I should come back. The owner and one tech. jacked up the car. It took another hour and half to get it corrected. During next several months, I noticed the caliper on the left side rusted badly, and at 8th month after the service, left side caliper started leaking brake fluid. Went back in the shop, the caliper was replaced free of charge under the warranty. 4 month later, the right side caliper started leaking fluid again. I contacted the owner and the caliper leaking was confirmed by its mechanics. Then I was told to get right side caliper replaced it would cost around $250 USD. I was pissed by its workmanship and using low quality parts - I have never heard a brake caliper would "break" in 8 - 12 months. The owner offered 10%, and then 20% discount to replace the bad caliper - I refused. Below par workmanship and using of low quality parts are the hallmarks of this auto shop. If you can avoid, STAY AWAY from Tao's Auto Service. _________________________________ Follow up previous review- Dec. 31, 2022 The owner contacted me after the review was posted. He said he would offer a free caliper with $120 labor charge to settle the issue. I refused again. I purchased a brand new caliper online and one of my friend offered to put it on the car. A shocking surprise is when the wheel was taken off, we found there are two pieces of thin metal washes (see attached picture) floating between the rotor (back side of the rotor) and rotor's dust shield - which making scratching noises when rotor rotates. Now we know why the rubber seal of caliper cylinder leaks! Those two washers rotate as wheel spins and their sharp edges will slash the rubber seal when they contact with caliper piston outer seal. THIS IS SABOTAGE! - Who did it and why did he do it - The shop owner, Mr. Tao needs to explain! 1 - the first technician worked on the car is a white guy in far left service bay he replaced both rear rotors, pads and caliper; 2 - after above parts were replaced, the car lost braking capability - long and soft braking pedal, and parking brake not function at all. Then the car back to the shop and checked and serviced by the same person (if I remember correctly, he was called Bill by shop owner); 3 - 8 months later, rear left caliper leaked. Back in the shop, it was replaced without charge under warranty. It was serviced by a young guy in far right service bay; 4 -2 weeks after warranty expired, I realized that rear passenger side caliper start leaking brake fluid due to unusual noise was heard. What are the chances that two newly installed caliper failed after 8-13 months? For caliper, pads and rotors, I was in the shop for 4 times - Mr. Tao - Do you realize you have a rogue employee in your shop? He purposely sabotaged customer's property. You are responsible for what the shop did to the customer. Further legal action may be pending. read more

I've only ever has good experiences with Tao's business and that's saying something because, historically due to past issues, I'm naturally skeptical of vehicle repair shops. Over the summer the engine in my Enclave failed and I initially had some major issues with the warranty company. Not only did Tao expertly replace the engine, he also gave me peace of mind in what was otherwise a nightmare scenario. He showed up on his off days, he helped me where he could when he knew my financial situation wasn't ideal, he gave me more detail and assurances then I could ever have thought to ask when looking for the replacement engine and, once the repairs were finished, the engine in the vehicle ran like it was new. Do not go here for inspections! I drive a 2010 Ford Focus in perfect condition and they failed my car because the fog light was out so I said okay, I'll get that fixed and bring it back. I then brought the car back to get the stickers and then they still didn't pass it because they said the fog light glass was cracked, which is not a required light. I fixed the whole fog light assembly to make sure it wasn't going to be the fog light that fails the car. Honestly I was a Chevrolet certified mechanic for 4 years straight. Being over 1,000 miles from my home and equipment I was not able to perform repairs in a timely manner like I had wanted. However bringing my vehicle to these guys who gave me a very reasonable quote over the phone. Stressing my situation they assured me that they would have my vehicle out and ready by the end of the day and the owner even offered to stay later then normal hours to make sure that repairs were finished and that I picked up my vehicle. Even though I added a few other auto repairs to the original list he have me a rough calculates price and stuck with it to the very end and even notified me if anything changed at all. Despite going over budget about $100 he offered me a discount and refused to let me pay the extra few dollars. All in all this place was amazing and timely with the repairs. I used TAO's for about 5 years now and took my Honda Odyssey, Lexus IS250 and Subaru Outback for service for various reasons to this place and can say I am fully satisfied. I had issues at Subaru dealership where they would not put the wheel properly and damaged my lug bolts, forgot to fully put in the cap for radiator, etc. but so far have not had those issues at this place. I had recently been to Tao's for getting my state inspection done since he was offering a discount. When I called up the day before for an appointment, he started off by saying that he will need to see if the car needs maintenance and stuff like that. I told him I have had regular servicing done and did not have any issues. When i went in for the state inspection, he told me that I need to change my brakes and tail lights which would be another $200. I refused and told him that I don't need the state inspection done. He charged me $35 as labor charges. I took my car to Pennzoil which was a mile down from Tao's. They got the state inspection done. I had to change just one faulty brake light which cost me $8. Tao's is a total rip off. I would advise others to stay away. DON'T GO FOR THE DISCOUNTS. It's a ruse to pull in customers and then rip them for off for more money. I have anywhere between 4 and 6 vehicles at any given time and have been using Tao for over 5 years. Used to schedule inspection a week or two in advance, with Tao he often says bring it down today. I do my own repairs for the most part, had one major repair (steering rack on Infiniti) and Tao worked with me on the price, most other stuff was very reasonable. For those that indicate he recommends unnecessary maintenance, try a chain auto repair shop or manufactured dealership, their service writers get paid up to 50% commission, there is no comparison. Tao is locally owned, faster, less expensive, and if you ask if a repair or maintenance is absolutely necessary he will tell you the truth. read more

I have been going to Tao's Auto for ten years. They have always done excellent work at very reasonable prices. Tao is very big on customer service.I went in to have him check my brakes, and he did the job at that time. He even went to get the parts because it would be awhile before the truck could get to him.I agree with another review that they find other things that may need attention, but they tell you if it's urgent or can be delayed. I find them to be very honest.Their oil changes alone are a bargain.You can't even buy the oil and do it yourself for what he charges. read more
