My daughter and I were in town to visit MSU, and waited too long to make reservations for Saturday night dining. After being turned away from a couple of other places, we stumbled upon Tanoshii while walking down Main Street. They were booked full but they offered us bar seating. The waitstaff was super friendly and polite, and our food was AMAZING. I ordered the Dan-Dan, and it was one of the best meals I've ever had in a restaurant. And I wasn't even that hungry, so hunger didn't affect my impression (we've all had great meals when we're starving, right). My daughter was happy to see bao buns on the menu as it's one of her favorites. She ordered the pork shoulder version and gave it 2 thumbs up. I'm glad I didn't read the negative reviews here or I might have passed it up. It's a bummer those folks didn't have our great experience, but I would suggest giving Tanoshii a chance to impress you in the way that it did for us. read more

I was really looking forward to some Japanese food during this rainy evening. The place has a nice layout and decorations, and the service was good. Unfortunately, the food is not close to the Japanese style I'm used to. Pork ramen was sweet for my taste. It's very similar to a Filipino entree and would've partnered well with rice. Okonomiyaki is waffle style so it's a bit hard to bite into. Mochi donut was soft inside and golden fried outside. Unsure if it's meant to taste grainy inside. I thought cooked mochi is supposed to taste smooth. I liked the Agedashi. It was nice and crispy on all sides. Be advised that if you sit by the bar, your clothes will smell like the kitchen. Also, the music was a bit too loud, unless that's the vibe the restaurant is going for. Interesting concept for Bozeman, but not my cup of tea. read more

Wow. I didn't expect this. For whatever reason I've always assumed that Tanoshii was something along the lines of a ramen diner, basically a package of Top Ramen tossed into a bowl with some bad cuts of meat. We finally went to Tanoshii tonight thanks to my wife's insistence and we were both blown away. Everything we had was incredibly fresh, deep flavors and pretty much exactly what you'd want if you were to be given a chance to eat at a Japanese restaurant that didn't focus on sushi or teriyaki. I tend to avoid eating meat in restaurants (for religious reasons) and my wife and I had the agadashe tofu, brussels sprouts, romanesco and the chicken and waffles (which I didn't eat, but she said was amazing) as well as a side of pickles. I'm still blown away by the purity and freshness of flavors. Yes, they have ramen, but I think the real must-haves are on the vegetable side of the menu. read more

So this is a very mixed review and I want to say I only had two things and we got the order to go. The chicken ramen and the mochi donuts. My husband and I eat a lot of ramen. Like once a week probably for the last 20 years. And I know that Asian restaurants in places with smaller Asian food eating populations have to have more fusion style menus BUT - this was the weirdest ramen ever. First off it came with a big pile of kimchi- on the ramen. WTH? And the broth? Weird and very spicy and more like a Korean curry flavor. The chicken was fine, but between the broth and the kimchi it was completely over powered. I liked the onsen egg and its soft texture but again, everything was too spicy, and wrongly flavored. I only ate 30%. My husband had the same reaction and didn't eat much more than me. It's not that I'm dissing it because it was different, it legit wasn't enjoyable. I love spicy food and often get my ramen medium spicy but this wasn't even advertised as spicy - unless whatever green oil is, is spicy. What saved the meal from being a total bust was the delicious mochi donuts with lemon curd. Absolutely delicious. Go get the donuts. Nice and chewy and so good for dipping into the lemon curd. read more

Due to the long waits for our food and whatnot (again, only one server for the majority of the time), management comp'd our dessert. Cons: Unfortunately it is terribly over priced for what you receive. $7 for a small, extremely thin portion of lackluster katsu chicken. $6 for a small portion kimchi. $23 for the pork ramen and while the pork itself was absolutely delicious, again, the portions were just small; without the pork, is equivalent to the amount of a $1 Top Ramen. The ramen came in what some may consider a standard cereal bowl. In conclusion: Sadly, we won't be returning, but did appreciate the amazing service and courtesy of the team... I was so excited to eat here again this time in town. The guy wouldn't give me a table because I was alone. He said the three empty tables all had reservations in the next hour. I sat at the bar only to find the menu had changed. They changed the rolls out to these overly salty mess making sloppy Joe things. I booked online (under Google/'make a reservation' link, which brought me to Open Table) a month in advance for a special date night, and even received a confirmation and email reminder the day before for my reservation. We arrived on time, 1.5 hours before a pre-booked Christmas show. The hostess claimed they didn't have a reservation for us, and wouldn't seat us at any of the open spots (two seats at the bar, and one table open) due to other upcoming reservations. After checking with other staff several times, she told us that they don't even use Open Table booking services, but use Toast Tables (which come to find out is an affiliate of Open Tables/ the systems communicate). It was a big bummer when we had made special plans and reservations, we didn't even get a chance to try the food, and all they would offer is 'standby' with people already waiting in the entry, and at this point 1.25 hrs remaining till showtime. A week later - Open Table even sent us a 'thank you for dining at Tanoshii'! Unbelievable, and makes me think they just gave away our reservation. I'm sure it's delicious, but PASS! read more

I can here for dinner solely because they had a vegan dessert that sounded amazing (panna cotta with huckleberry ginger sauce), and because the ramen bowls looked intriguing. Oh my goodness! Every dish was a party in our mouths. SO GOOD. I had the summer ramen, which was unlike anything I've ever had before. I'm not usually a fan of pickled ginger, but theirs is obviously housemade, and it was perfect to balance the other flavors happening. My daughter had the pork belly ramen, and that was the best pork belly I've ever tried. Absolutely delicious. We were pretty hungry, so also ordered the haricot verts, which were also full flavored and delightful. That vegan panna cotta is the type of dish that you never want to finish, to keep eating forever. Yummmmmm. Get it and thank me later! Nice people, cute little spot but I have to be real: Pros: Brussels sprouts Asparagus Cons: Everything was so salty: even the pros above, the oyster mushrooms, the broth, all of it Pork ramen tasted like sweet onion soup broth. I know I'm spoiled with amazing ramen in California but this was not tonkotsu broth. Tonkotsu broth should be a little fatty, rich with depth of flavor but this was seriously a sweet oniony broth. The 'oonsen' egg was literally floating like a cloud of white and yellow: in no food whatsoever should your egg white be raw, unless you want sick customers. The pork was sweet and tough and the pickled vegetables just didn't work. After all this we all got major stomachaches and nausea, which is not a pleasant way to feel after a meal at a decent restaurant. I think if you just stick to veggies and ask for low salt you may be fine but no 'ramen'. :( read more

We had a great experience at Tanoshii this evening. Great atmosphere, great service, and really great food. We started w/the kara-age octopus and the local oyster mushrooms. Both of these were stellar dishes. The octopus was lightly coated, fried, and served with a sweet chili sauce. Fantastic! The oyster mushrooms were amazing with green onion and sprouts! We also had the Taiwanese Noodle Bowl, (reminded me of a homey beef stew) and the summer ramen. Both of the entrees were tasty though not at the level of the appetizers. They have a good selection of sakis to choose from. I definitely recommend Tanoshii if you are in Bozeman. read more

Great service and ambience! However, if you're looking for true to original tasting ramen or noodle--this is not the place. I'm Taiwanese and had my share of Japanese ramen both in Japan and the States. I've ordered summer (cold noodle), pork ramen, Taiwanese ramen and Japanese curry. This location, unfortunately, was not able to deliver. None of the dish tasted remotely close to the original taste. The noodle's a bit stale. Broth is too sour. Too little soup. I would not recognize that these were ramen/Japanese curry/Taiwanese noodle if it ain't stated on the menu. read more

Look at the reviews, people - this place is a Bozeman gem! I'd give it a ten if I could. The food, atmosphere, service are top quality. Austin recommended the Local Oyster Mushrooms and Chicken and Waffles. Both were fabulous. We tried the Taiwanese Noodle Bowl with an egg with their house made chili sauce. Delicious. I also appreciated how our server, Olivia, brought (without us having to ask) extra plates and bowls so we could share. The beer and saki were excellent, too. I have to say, one of the things that really blew me away was the pickled ginger. I don't think I can ever eat store-bought ginger again. The flavor of their ingredients is next level. This is a fantastic new restaurant for Japanese soul food right on Main street in Bozeman. Run by a Yellowstone Club private chef, the food was nothing but breathtaking. We were invited to a pre-opening and had the opportunity to sample a variety of appetizers as well as several main dishes. We will come back often for sure. If you travel through Bozeman, you should stop by. If you live here, good for you! Drop by at Tanoshii and try out the Chicken waffles and for sure don't skip the appetizers. read more

I want this spot to succeed. I really do. We need a delicious ramen spot in this town. So I'll keep my feedback short. The soul of ramen is in the broth. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and was expecting a rich and complex flavor. It was disappointing as it was pretty flat and was lacking dimension. The toppings were fine. I think if they invest the tie in making the broth and really go for a slow, 12-18 hour simmer of pork bones and other goodies, they will have people lining out the door for days. Heartbreaking. I live in Bozeman half of the year and this has been my go-to favorite restaurant. Did they change management?? Tonite was nothing like all my previous outstanding experiences here. The waffles were just a shadow of the large crunchy mouthfulls that they used to be. Now, soggy and thin. Green beans way over salted without much other flavor. My husband reports the pork ramen to be less flavorful than it used to be. Hate to lose this place! read more

Tanoshii is one of my favorite local spots in town! With their rotating specials and incredible base menu, I can always find something that I'm in the mood for. As someone who frequents this restaurant, I cannot think of a time I've left unsatisfied (purr)! Highly recommend the summer ramen with chicken katsu and the oyster mushrooms as well. While the food here is great, if you're looking to enjoy your dinner I would not recommend going here. We made a reservation and after one hour and 15 minutes, we were told that we had five minutes left before we had to leave the table. We had just been served a drink...Nowhere in the reservation confirmation or website does it say you are limited to 1.5 hours. If this is their policy, they should at the very least be open about it. We were pressured to leave and our server was incredibly rude to us. Never been treated so horribly at any restaurant in Bozeman or anywhere else. This was incredibly frustrating after spending $150 dollars on a dinner you want to enjoy. read more
