This place was recommended by our landscape contractor to pick out tile for our outdoor patio fireplace being built. They have so much to choose from it overwhelming. I wanted a mosaic tile and they had over 30 to choose from! In addition to the huge selection of tile, they have travertine, quartz, wood, and cabinets. Definitely way more selection than I've seen anywhere else. I can't recall the name of the lady that helped us, but she was super helpful and very sweet. Tanner MATERIALS sells a variety of MATERIALS for a competitive price. We came to them, however, for their General Contracting services. They were supposed to be our one-stop, turnkey remodel solution; they turned out to be a nightmare. Our tile installer is an artist/maestro/expert who produced two spectacular showers. He was the only good aspect when dealing with Tanner. Harold is an unprofessional, angry GC. He is incompetent, disorganized, uncommunicative, clueless regarding the work, timing, and the subs, and when questioned, becomes angry, combative, and retaliatory--in person, in your own home, and over the phone. His plumber, Fernando, was a smartass with a bad attitude who left an absolute mess in our bathroom. We were told before the project started that all subs would cover our floors, and they did not - not really and not always. During Fernando's first visit we asked him to protect the tub and he ignored us, leaving an absolute greasy, dirty mess behind. He then installed our shower valve without strapping it to the framing. During his second visit, he complained that we had asked Harold that he protect the tub because he had ignored our request the first time. He then installed our shower wand off-center and misaligned the tub spout - possibly in retaliation? He also abandoned our job for 2 hours to help a friend (I heard him coordinate this on his phone), taking one of our plumbing fixtures with him. He gave us several different explanations for this: not having the proper equipment, his MIA plumbing partner, needing to leave to go and look for/buy the necessary equipment, etc. It appears that his 2-3 different stories didn't match the 2-3 stories that he gave to Tanner when asked why he disappeared, because when I addressed his job abandonment with Harold, Harold yelled at me and said that the entire situation was MY fault. Harold said that this plumber was very good and had worked with him for years, all the while staring directly at the misaligned fixtures. At this point we realized the unacceptable level of Tanner's workmanship and work ethic standards. Here on Yelp you can read my review of Tanner's countertop sub, Eclat (Francisco) who, per Harold, is Tanner's "only" stone subcontractor. They cut the holes for my sinks in the front yard of my house without using a template and left so many scratches in the marble that you would think that they had damaged the stone on purpose. The three different sinks were all badly measured and cut and were absolutely ruined. When Harold came to inspect the damage, he looked directly at the misaligned sink cutouts, the misaligned cuts on the counters and backsplashes, and the deep scratches everywhere, and said, "I can't say all these are bad or good." No accountability, once again confirming Tanner's standards re: workmanship and customer service standards. He offered to leave these absolute crap sinks in place for no charge . . . um, no, thanks! We instructed him to have Eclat remove everything and vacate the premises. At this point, we didn't want to continue dealing with Tanner and cancelled the shower glass sub (who was more expensive than the glass company we found later). We had already spoken with Al, the owner (who, by the way, did more in a 20 minute phone call than Harold did in 20 days), and this further enraged Harold. He came to our house complaining that we were making him work on his day off, inspected the crap that his subs had left behind, and said that he would speak with Al to reduce what we owed Tanner, and walk away. Two months later, we finished the job ourselves with our own (and very professional) subs, who are incredible business owners and who felt proud and happy to come to our house, take digital/laser measurements, and provide flawless services and communication. I was a general contractor for 9 years and NEVER had a job go this badly. I most certainly NEVER spoke to a homeowner the way Harold spoke to me and my wife. Please be forewarned: the 1-star reviews here on Yelp are not just snotty people venting - they are 100% legit. Tanner will leave you in the lurch with unfinished/damaged jobs. They use and support unskilled subcontractors as opposed to supporting you, their paying client. Please avoid them; there are plenty of other reliable and professional companies in the Phoenix area who will give you top-notch service for a reasonable price. read more

My husband and I went to order materials to install a new backsplash and our first experience was that no one wanted to help. They told us "they had backsplashes all over the store" they just sat at the front talking with one another and were annoyed when we asked any questions. We picked out the backsplash we wanted and we ordered it and put a $900 deposit down. They said they would call with an installation date. A whole week went by and we didn't hear anything so we called them and asked when they were coming to install it and they had NO record of our order. They were incredibly rude and acted like we were crazy. We sent them photos of our receipt and purchase paper and they said they "needed to get their ducks in a row" and call us back. When they called back they said they had the order (the clearly didn't) and they would have to reach out next week with a better idea of when the materials would be in (probably because they hadn't even ordered them). Needless to say we got our money back and went to Floor and Decor. Sad because we used Tanner Materials years ago and had a good experience. From the beginning working with them was really good. Hubby felt great about going with them to lay our laminate flooring. They were courteous, attentive and answered all our questions. The day they completed the job, they didn't clean up any of the residue etc left on the laminate flooring, and stated they would be back to lay down one transition because they ran out of material. Upon move in we realized the transitions in various areas were not flush with the floor, areas in a room sound hollow while another was solid, floors squeak and creak in every room! We reported this to them and that they had not come back to finish the missing transition. When they finally came out, the crews team lead claimed that the transition is fine (even though one side is flush while the other has an opening which you can stick something into). Then they claimed there was nothing wrong with the floor and the sounds I hear are normal! I asked if he leveled the floor and he responded all they do is grind the floor down to level it....well, even if that was done why are there uneven sounds depending on where I walk? Then he literally rocked back and forth quite a few times on the worst creaking spot...it was making noise and the laminate moving up and down while he was doing it and he had the nerve to look at me and say there was nothing wrong! My husband called the office numerous times to get this flooring fixed and they would not bother returning the call!!!! Wasted money and time...truly wish we went with a more reputable company that guarantees and stands by their work! read more

Al and his team replaced the old, gross carpet in our house with new vinyl. They were able to get in within a few days and had the entire job done in 2 days. The new flooring is beautiful and it looks like it was there all along- the new floor flows seamlessly with the old one and they did a great job installing the flooring under the baseboards. It has completely transformed the house. Al's communication is very good and they are very reasonably priced. Highly recommend. read more

Horrible customer service. Quite honestly baffled with the experience. Walked straight up to the counter to ask some questions while an employee was on the phone. Other employees in the building make short eye contact with me and go about their business. Minutes later, two other ladies walk in and the employee on the phone hangs up, blows right passed me at the counter and greets the ladies who literally just walked through the door. And no, they did not know each other because I heard the employee say, "Good afternoon ladies. What can we help you with today?" Go somewhere else that values ALL customers. Quite obvious that this place judges each customer and tends to those who look the part of a quick sale customer, whatever that looks like. If you catch the drift of what I am trying to say without me having to write it, just do yourself a favor and treat yourself to another company with better customer service. We chose Tanner because it's convenient location in downtown Chandler and they have a wide range of materials to look through. Pricing is ok and occasionally you can get a good deal depending on order size. Customer service is really poor, like really really poor. They'd all rather stand behind the desk and talk to sales people, friends visiting the store to sell them knock-off AirPods, etc instead of actually help customers with sales orders. These are just what I experienced on multiple visits. We recently remodeled 2 bathroom and a pantry and needed to order more tile. They said they could get it order and would contact us when it arrived. They NEVER contact you and after a week I finally drove up to their location. They ordered the wrong tile and promptly blamed someone else when I told them exactly which tile to reorder and had them pull the numbers straight off our previous invoice in their system. So I waited another week for the "fix" and still no contact. Instead of continuing to deal with Tanner's poor customer service I found competitor that could order my tile and took our business to them. read more

Our home looked great when complete until we started inspecting the quality of the tile work done in the master bathroom. Harold agreed to come fix it but it was just a bandaid as he used a color seal and it all faded away after a year. After a year Harold ignored all my calls. Had to call the ROC and file a complaint and during inspection Harold agreed to come and take care of the issue as a "resolution" in front of the ROC inspector. Then a week later Harold went MIA and said the ROC advised him not to do any work in our home for a year! Total lie. I spoke with the lead investigator at the ROC Joseph Shikany who is the chief of criminal investigations and he verified that they would never have said this. Harold still has never gotten back to me. Stay far away from this company! read more

I'm quiet surprised to read many negative reviews. A friend referred me to Tanners. My friend and her niece have shopped here and had positive experiences working with them during their home renovations. I've been here three times the last couple weeks as I'm working on a reno and deciding on material. Every visit the staff has been nothing but nice and helpful. When I visited the 2nd time, my husband and I were surprised to be greeted by a staff member in the parking lot asking if we needed help bringing in our samples. Later that visit, we just so happened to be receiving help from the owner. Al was very helpful with suggestions and was straightforward with his recommendations. He really took his time helping us. I found a few unique pieces here that I'm really excited to put in my new home. Oh, they can do half slabs with some of the quartz and granites which will save me money (I'm so happy)!!! I was going to get quartz and granite from another business but now I'd rather get all of that from here. read more

This is our 2nd tile job with Tanner Materials, and once again it's been a great experience from start to finish. Helpful advice on tile selection while we were shopping around, and courteous assistance in setting up for the install. Fernando was able to pull in the installation date and kept me informed via phone / text. They showed up right on time and were careful to lay out floor protection between the job site and entry door to keep everything clean. Removed old carpet and installed new tile in a very large closet on the 1st day; next day was grouting and cleanup. Francisco was punctual, hard working and meticulous in his work. I have to echo some of the other reviews here when I popped in to shop for flooring and countertop materials recently. Maybe it was just my imagination but I felt totally ignored while other customers (ahem older) were prioritized. I mean yes, they were quite busy at the time and may have been spread thin but damn at least make it a little less obvious. read more

2 Stars because the quartzite countertop installation is beautiful. Took away 3 stars because they installed the undermount sink without the clips. How am I ever going to replace the sink without destroying the countertop now??? The clips were in a small box that was with all the accessories and they unpacked it in the living room. they had the instructions and I was home. No communication from installers. AMAZING! We had such a great experience with Tanner - the entire crew from Harold to the installers, to the glass guy! What a great bunch of people to work with! They helped us with the entire process from picking out tile, quartz, replacing sinks, light fixtures, etc. We had a complete remodel of our master bathroom and bedroom - everything was replaced except for the cabinets and Tanner made it happen in less than 4 weeks. Our experience was one of the worst. Counter tops ordered in March, when we were finally ready for install it was two weeks to fabricate, that was April 5th, it is now June 6th. Here are the excuses "they picked up and cut the wrong slab", then the fabricator stated "we used the wrong saw" so which is it? Wrong slab, wrong saw? All this and no actual communication from Tanner at all. Any communication regarding any of this was initiated by us. We were originally quoted 500-800 for fabrication. Yesterday, the first communication initiated by Tanner was a text that stated "call me it's urgent". The return call was to inform us that the fabrication would now be 2,800.00. No apologies, no I'm sorry, no nothing. Today we go in for a refund an Al barely looked at us asked our name, we told him what we were there for and he did cut us a refund check, but throughout or visit never once looked at me or my husband. When I said this is the worst service I have ever received he replied "I said all I had to say yesterday" really wow. I can really tell you care, your customer service is just amazing, not. We are just speechless. Take your business elsewhere. You will not be happy with the service, not treated with respect. It's clear to me that my 1900 dollars was not enough money to elicit good customer service from Al at Tanner. It's sad your mother did not teach you better. Good luck Al, your going to need it in this crazy world we live in. What comes around goes around. Your karma will get the best of you. read more

READ the reviews before to you use this company. I experienced the same AWFUL service! Ignored, a bother, how dare a potential customer come into the actual store location. If you look like a contractor, or a rich person or maybe a man then you may be noticed, but if you look like the average homeowner, buyer beware! Not to mention they don't have consistent pricing, it's what they think you'll pay! I was finally helped by a person who was off that day and given a price. When I decided to buy, the person charging me tried to up the price I was quoted. Fortunately, I told them what I was quoted and the guy who helped me spoke up. I think it's hit or miss with their employees. It all depends on the luck of the draw. Fast forward to getting a quote for someone to install the tile, finding out it's another lock of the draw when it comes to who you get. The guy came out last week, said he'll send the quote the next day but didn't get. No biggie. Called the following day and got the quote. We liked it and I responded with we'd like to move forward. No response. Called the following day (Friday) told by the guy he's off that day and to call Saturday. Called Saturday, he didn't respond. Called Monday and left 2 messages, no response. Called Tuesday, again two messages no response. Thinking this is the way they conduct their business.... read more

We had Tanner Materials lay tile in our house out in the West Valley. We worked with Victor who was very knowledgeable about the products and the installation, and just a genuinely nice person to work with. Very conscientious very energetic and really wants to make the customer happy. They laid about 1700 ft.² of porcelain tile and it looks absolutely awesome. The first thing they had to do was clean the floor, patch some cracks and then level everything. The final product as I said is genuinely awesome. This company will take advantage of workers that they hire UNDER THE TABLE, they have a hard time paying their employees as well, received threats from a employee working under Jim Tanner himself to remove a message that I sent to the owner about the whole situation. Half of the people they hire aren't even licensed contractors , THIS IS WHY YOUR WORK IS NOT GETTING DONE CORRECTLY, they have no sense of organization and I am just appalled that this business is still running. If you are to do flooring or tile in your home I suggest anywhere but this company for a fact they will be late or just skimp on what they were assigned to do. read more

We recently purchased a home that had work done by them previously. We wanted to match the tile in an additional area to what was already there. The sales rep we worked with, Bryce, was an absolute nightmare. He took forever to follow up, talked down to me, and forgot to charge it credit card until weeks after the job was done. He made one call to me and then sent an email saying, "I've been trying to call you. I have been unsuccessful in reaching you and wanted to let you know that I can your card for the full amount." So rude to talk to me like I'm the problem when he just left my info somewhere on his desk. The only reason they're getting 2 stars is because the actual installers did a good job. Absolute nightmare. They didn't finish the work promised, failed to meet expectations and after months and months of attempting to work with Al on an amicable resolution, we were instead threatened and had to contact the police as a result of an altercation which took place at my residence. I was personally threatened with harm when I asked 4 of their employees to leave my residence. On two prior occasions I have been harassed by Al (apparently the son of the owner), and have found him wandering my property uninvited . Beware! read more

The rest can't be bothered. Second visit I walked around aimlessly as Brook described what she had for lunch to another lady who worked in the back stockroom I'm assuming... so it's not like she was busy. I had quite the interesting experience with this company. I won't go too far into details, because we have grounds for a legal claim based on the text message exchange between myself and Al. There was a clear threat made, along with some very disparaging personal remarks. The issue stemmed from a lack of communication and poor transparency. I believe if there wasn't a 3rd party involved, my experience would have been different. But as we all know, when there are "middle men" involved with contractor work, there's always a chance something can be fumbled. In this case there were multiple, but nothing excuses threats of harm and personal attacks to a customer. Again, it needs to be noted that I have text messages from Al that will provide all the evidence needed. I'm a business owner and I understand being frustrated, but dialogue is critical in times of misunderstanding. I don't anticipate this review will hurt their business, nor am I trying to. But it's important for people to at least be aware. - as far as my home and this situation, we will be vigilant and make sure our property and family is protected by any means necessary. read more
