I love Indian food & I love Tandoori Chef. I introduced my boyfriend to Indian food by taking him to Tandoori Chef for dinner & now he cannot get enough. That first meal we ordered samosa chat, garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, & for dessert we ordered gulab jamun. All were excellent. Since then, we have been back more than a dozen times. Our absolute favorites are the chicken korma, chicken hyderabad, & butter chicken. I really enjoy the saag paneer & malai kofta. The kheer, rasmalai, & gulab jamun are delicious for dessert. We especially love the weekend lunch buffet. It is a great way to eat a few GREAT items on the menu for a reasonable price. This is my first time trying Indian food aside from Samosas. Upon being seated my friend and I were promptly brought over pappadum (something like crispy pita) with 3 chutneys.(sauces) All 3 were full of coriander aka cilantro, my arch enemy! Against my better judgement I decided to order the vegetarian sampler so that I could try a few things. It came with 1 super delicious, crispy, jam-packed samosa, several veggie fritters that I enjoyed and some sort of cheese cake bites that I felt the texture was a bit off for me. We also ordered the garlic naan which was fabulous! They offer a free dessert with a yelp check-in and I believe it is byob! Like other reviewers pointed out, it is very quiet inside. The staff is pretty attentive but when I inquired about a dish the server muttered a response I could barely hear or understand. I think there is a banquet room in the back and there was a huge party of Indian patrons which I take as a good sign of the restaurants authenticity. Overall I will go back, probably for the lunch buffet so I can try more options and hopefully give them a better review. I have never dined in here, just take-outs whenever I have an hankering for Indian food. The dining area looks nice and clean though. The service is friendly, as far as the people who take the order. One guy even taught me to how to pronounce a dish correctly, because I was butchering it so bad that he couldn't understand me initially. My usuals have been lamb rogan josh, lamb vindaloo and samosas. However, I recently discovered samosa chaat and it's simply amazing. It is sooooo much better than plain ol samosas. It's a great value too, as it is listed under app, but can be a meal in itself. I used to get tandoori chicken. It's pretty good but kind of pricey for what you get. I prefer dishes that will yield leftovers for 1 or 2 more meals. I have not been ordering lamb rogan josh because the dish has been inconsistent. The lamb vindaloo on the other hand has always been spot-on, but it's not for sissies because this dish is pretty spicy. Order extra rice with this dish. UPDATE: After publishing my initial review detailing the disappointing experience my girlfriend and I had at Tandoori Chef, we received a quick follow up message from the owner, who apologized and invited us back to give the food a second chance. We took him up on his offer, and I can say that the food the second time around was FAR better than the first time. We ordered the simosa appetizer, the tandoori roti, and for our entrees we ordered channa masala and daal makhani. The samosa appetizers were good, as was the tandoori bread. Honestly still my favorite pick for Indian food in the Bergen county area. The food is always fresh and full of flavor. I love their biryani and tikka masala. Recently started eating less meat and there are plenty of vegetarian options here. Tonight we tried the Dum Aloo and also the saag paneer. Both were good- but the dum aloo was really delicious. Neither item was spicy but I believe you have the option to choose your spice level. They had plenty of other vegetarian items to choose from so next time I'll try something new. We ordered chicken 65, egg biryani, dal makhni, Hyderabadi chicken curry and hot & sour soup. Let me start by saying that the soup was definitely made from a store bought pack (Ching's Hot & Sour soup, No Kidding). Next up is the chicken 65. This was a joke as the dish came with rotten/stale yellow onions (zoom into the pic below). They deep fried some marinated chicken, added lots of red food color and named it chicken 65. This is a disgrace to the dish itself. We threw away the entirety of it. Dal Makhni was full of different dals available all over India. It was just pathetic. Coming to the Biryani i don't understand how others are recommending it but it's not made of "BASMATI RICE". Its some weird thick rice that way pretty awful. If they can fix the rice it might be good. Lastly the chicken curry was decent but it's not Hyderabadi chicken curry as they say. It's some version of chicken curry with heavy coconut milk and cream. I have to admit I didn't have very high expectations for a random Indian place in Hackensack but was pleasantly surprised. Came here with my mom who loves Indian food and she left very happy. The staff was super friendly and accommodating for our diets. For a Tuesday night there were enough people in the restaurant (mostly Indian) but the service was still swift. I ordered the chana masala and it was perfect. It came with basmati rice and was a great compliment to the moderately spiced chickpeas and tomato sauce. My mom ordered lamb and rice and loved it. She was afraid to order it since she has been to some places where the lamb ends up over cooked and too chewy but this place cooked it just right. I haven't been to Tandoori Chef in quite a few years. I returned solely because of Groupon. Places like Mantra and Brick Lane Curry are closer to home and have been my go to Indian restaurants. So, the Groupon deal was an appetizer, two entrees and naan. There were price limitations in each of the categories. Our appetizer was the Vegetable Sampler Platter. 1pc Samosa, 4pc Paneer Pakora, 4pc Veg Pakora and 1pc Pappadum. Odd they included the pappadum since it was already given to us when we first sat down. The vegetable pakora were the highlight. Our naan choice was Pudina Paratha (Wheat bread stuffed mildly with mint and coriander). It was a little bit greasy. Wife's main was Paneer makhani (Tandoori Chef Favorite) Homemade cheese cubes cooked in a rich butter cream sauce. She enjoyed it. My main was the Lamb Kashmiri (lamb cooked in rich creamy sauce flavored with nuts and raisins). I found a few raisins. No nuts. The dish was pretty good. We passed on dessert. On occasion I have ordered from Tandoori chef a few times. I ordered a good amount of food two days ago and must say I am deeply disappointed. The process of calling them was a hassle, unfortunately there phone wasnt working properly and after various attempts I finally was able to get through and inform them about the problem with the phone. The girl who answered was nice but did not acknowledge the problem nor did she apologize. I called around 3.30pm because it was indicated online that they accept orders. After I had ordered the food I was told they would only be able to deliver after 5pm. I had been looking at other Indian rest. near Teaneck, I now regret not having waited to call another place. Afterall they were all working after 5pm. The food arrived around 5.50pm. I had placed the order at 3.30pm. The least they could have done is made sure I got my food sooner than later. The biriyani I ordered was probably the worst I have ever had. The flavor was fantastic, but the texture of the rice was watered down. I felt like I was eating pudding, spicy pudding. The meat was tender and nice. The girl unfortunately I believe misread my request and had sent two Samosa orders instead of one. I was rather upset when I saw the bill $40 + (because of the two samosa orders) but knew nothing could be done at the time, so i didnt call to complain. Let me also note, that once the delivery guy gave me the receipt and I informed him that I only ordered one samosa, he suggested that I let the girl know I only want one. Is it me or does that sound completely useless. Food for thought, if anyone from Tandoori Chef. reads this. The samosa's were salty on the outside but nice on the inside so not much to complain about but the aloo paratha was the worst. It was burnt, there was hardly any potato. Outstanding place to satisfy my cravings for Indian cuisine! My favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala! I have eaten here twice, 1st time thru online ordering and 2nd time as a sit down during lunch. Both times I left very satisfied- fresh and authentic! Our waiter was lovely and our online order was on time. The art on the wall really symbolizes Indian food, culture and beauty. Samosa was nice and fluffy, the chicken saag and the ginger chicken is very nice, as is the Aloo Vindaloo! Masala tea hits the spot on a somewhat cold day. The only minus was right at the end... the waiter mistakenly threw out food when we asked to pack our food. Unfortunately, they assumed we meant just "take away" and threw the food out. Only about 5 main dishes to choose from: daal, saag paneer,chickpeas, chicken tandoori, and another curry type of chicken. While the flavors were alright and tasty, they were definitely skimpy with the food. I got two chicken drumsticks and when I went back for more, there were none. So I waited and waited and waited. My boyfriend and I are regular customers for dinner service. Service is friendly and attentive and the food quality is up there. I typically order the chicken tikka masala or the butter chicken, which are both recommended. My boyfriend likes the korma. We always order naan, and the rice comes along with the entrees at no extra charge, which is probably why the entrees are a bit high in price. They will refill the rice platter for free and always check in to see if you want more. Samosas are also a good choice for appetizer. We wanted a lunch buffet and saw on the menu it was offered. Place was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon. Great lunch buffet options. A lot of places tone down the flavor and spice and offer very run of the mill dishes but I pleasantly surprised. Of course they had the regulars but offered fun stuff as well such as goat! The tandoori chicken was packed with flavor and the tikka masala options were pretty spicy. They also offer poppa chips which were really yummy. Service was great and very very attentive.
