I have experienced better Indian restaurants than this one. Buffet had very limited choice. Tried here 3-4 times both buffet,dine-in and take-out. Doesnt match the good quality indian food. read more

Tandoori Chef is my favorite Indian restaurant. Food is cooked with perfect flavors and served with love. I started eating here in 2009 and have never stopped since. I moved out of Hackensack last year but the taste keep forcing me to drive 40 minutes to eat amazing food. I recommend this place to everybody.. They just moved to next door and it's more cozy and stylish. read more

Tonight was my second time eating here and I was pleased both times. The food seemed pretty fresh and the servers were all friendly and timely. My boyfriend and I simply ordered the butter chicken and lamb biryani, which were both good. I did not like the raita that came with the biryani, I could tell it was too watery and not mixed thoroughly. However, the meat inside both dishes was tender and soft, which I loved. The also the biryani was a little too spicy, even though we ordered mild. I do not recommend if you cannot handle heat. Other than that, it was a good dinner. read more

This place is AWESOME!! I had never had Indian food before but a friend of mine is a fan so we tried this restaurant for the first time. I was a bit scared to try Indian food because I'm not a fan of spicy food but I LOVED it! We can the Chicken Kashmiri, Chicken Vindaloo, coconut naan, and garlic naan. HOLLLLY CRAP was everything delish! Decent prices as well. We paid 40$ for everything and we had leftovers to take home. I will definitely be going back! read more

Great spot, amazing food, very quiet and warming environment. The waitress was very nice, a little timid but overall very great. Great experience will definitely stop by again read more

The tandoori chicken was tender and juicy and it fell off the bone. It came to the table sizzling. The vegetable Samoa's were crispy and hot. The lamb vindaloo was spicy and tender. The paneer makhani was creamy with a warm after heat. The baingan bharta was the best eggplant I've ever had. The servers were pleasant and attentive and incredibly nice. I would absolutely come back again and again! read more

Veg pakora was as black and oily as hell. Panneer pakora was missing Panneer and as hard as rock. Gajar halwa was like grass. Bhel poori and Papdi chat were unpalatable. Stale food. Regret purchasing food here. It used to be good. Not anymore. read more

Great service especially the waitress krithi who has a smile on her face all the time... Food was great too.. Seating can be more conformatable.. read more

The food was okay. Decor was very nice. Overall ambience was nice. Service staff was good. read more

The food here is very good. The shrimp biryani is to die! My job orders from here literally every single week. The only problem is the price. Way overpriced! read more

Happened to be in the area, craved some indian. absolutely stunning all around, all these reviews swayed me to try it, and they're 100% correct. fresh, quality Indian. well done! read more

I've read the mixed reviews before coming here. But since I got a Restaurant.com non-expiring coupon through our company's CorporatePerks program, I figured we'd give this place a try and judge for ourselves. Ambience, don't come here if that's important to you. Taste-wise, it's OK. Price-wise, it's on the expensive side considering the dishes are small. But the main reason I'm giving this place a "1" is because of the service. The manager refused to honor our CorporatePerks/Restaurant.com coupon -- he claims they never participated ... yeah, right. Let's just say we're not going back and we're telling friends not to bother try this place.... the experience left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

This place is a MUST GO to if you want true, authentic Indian food. Always consistently fantastic. As an appetizer the Samosa Chat is delicious. So much flavor! I ordered the chicken tikka masala which was exquisite and my boyfriend always gets the Chicken Hyderabad which is equally as good if not better. The garlic Naan is too die for. We also got an order of the white rice with our meal. Fairly priced and you walk out stuffed. The only reason for 4 stars is because the customer service is not the best but it doesn't really interfere with your experience. We go for the food and don't expect much in terms of suggestions or a customer centric and friendly waitstaff. I believe it's family owned and one of the men in the family manages the place. read more

I discovered what amazing Indian food tastes like at this restaurant. Often go for the buffet on weekends. I've tried other Indian restaurants but this one is by far the best. The staff is really genuine people -- the kind of people you'd want to be around. read more

I've had Tandoori Chef several times - never been disappointed. First let me state a disclaimer... I had never had Indian food before I came here a couple years ago. I've also never had any other Indian food to compare this to. With that said my review and subsequent 4-star rating is based on the fact the food tastes really f'ing good and that's it. Samosa, Tikka Masala, Chicken Korma, Naan. Amazing. I've even had delivery a couple times and the food was still just as good. read more

The best Indian buffet in the metro area! While it's a few bucks more on the weekend, this translates to even more dish options. Super friendly servers greet you with pleasant smiles. Consistently delicious food--check it out. read more

I had a buffet lunch @$8.95. There are several choices with one desert. Chicken curry was a bit watery but good (mild) taste. I ordered a mango lassie and it was also thin, compared to other places I know. I had a free desert coupon from yelp and had ice cream. So overall it was good and scored 3.6 for me. Very quiet is a plus factor. read more

For this part of NJ, it is one of the best Indian restaurants around. The food is exceptionally flavored. They spice according to your palette and of course request. Competitively priced, overall decent service. I frequent their take out and have never had a complaint. read more

Stopped in for a quick Indian meal and the place was well decorated and inviting. The gentleman who placed our order had a huge language barrier and couldn't understand what we wanted so he grabbed someone else to better assist him. They brought a small appetizer which consisted of cassava crackers with a mixture of hot or sweet sauces. That was good. Besides that, the chicken tandoori was awesome, I ordered a curry chicken with veggies and that was good as well. Food was great overall, prices were affordable but the staff needs improvement... read more

this had been one of my go-to indian places - for indian buffet lunch, delivery, and for dinner. love the chicken tikka saag and their garlic naan is yummy. the kashmiri curry is delicious. clean restaurant with courteous staff, and you get a pretty good portion, so we usually have leftovers. indian buffet for lunch has a good selection has been different the two times we went. read more

Solid Indian cuisine in a Bergen County BYO establishment.

My go-to place for Indian food in the area. Can't beat the value and quality. I usually sample most of what they offer on any given day and so far it has never let down. The vegetable curries are excellent and the Chicken korma is as well. Only down side is I don't recall ever seeing lamb or goat. read more

The chicken Kadhai is amazing! This was my favorite plate. We also had the chicken Tikka Masala and Navatran Korma (vegetarian dish, which had some mixed greens). Both dishes were good. The garlic Naan tasted very good but the bottom sides were over-toasted, slightly. read more

Food is great and wonderful service. Definately will come back. Love papdi chat, lamb rogan josh and love the Mango lasso.

I love this place, has a good lunch buffet. Mostly I take out or have them deliver as I find they tend to give larger portions in take out/delivery :) My sisters and I always get the chicken tikki masala and shrimp vindaloo, very very savory. We also love the garlic naan. read more

i have been coming to this place for several years. i never sit inside because you come out smelling like curry and i think its kind of hard to get rid of the smell. so it will always be takeout for me. i love the butter chicken and lamb biryani. it is very heavy food but delicious. the portions are quite large, and lasted me 4 meals! read more

Been meaning to update this for a while...Still love this place, but unfortunately they no longer have the $22.95 dinner special. We order one app, two entrees, rice, and two garlic naans and have enough leftover for lunch the next day. read more

I should not even give 1 star if there was such an option. I ordered pure veg food for my birthday party and every one in birthday party was pure vegetarian. I personally called owner and ordered veg food. I mentioned it is vegetarian biryani and he confirmed the same. He delivered food and we didn't see what he sent till the time we started dinner. We never realized it was chicken biryani as we started with bread and vegetables first. One kid pick biryani and started eating and then she realized that it had some different taste and something was not right. Then when we checked, it was chicken piece and it was whole chicken biryani. We called restaurant , response was not good. Called owner and he said i can send veg biryani but we were already very late so we ordered pizza for kids. We asked for refund and he told that he could refund only biryani and nothing else. He asked us to call cops and do whatever we could and he didn't even care. This is my last order with them. I was a very loyal customer from past 7 years but today they just broke my trust. Whole food is lying down at our home while I am writing this as no one believed that other food was pure veg so everyone left everything as it is. read more

Tandoori Chef - Indian Near Me - Hackensack, New Jersey

See all

What a waste!! Gosh we ordered veg hakka noodles with chilli paneer. The hakka noodles had some terrible smelly gravy and the chilli paneer was red ketchup sauce. We are not fussy eaters but exploring new restaurant failed us totally this time. We just couldn't eat it!!!!! Wasted all the food, just paid and left the restaurant, never to return. So beware explorers! read more

I am not the kind who would patiently write reviews. But I have been raving about this lunch buffet at Tandoori Chef@ Hackensack. This was our first visit to this restaurant. We had a lunch buffet on a Sunday. I came from India to visit my son, and we happened to eat at Tandoori Chef, as it was on the way, when were returning home from a day out. I was dreading eating at an Indian restaurant here, as I was always told about how bad the food is. Much to my surprise, the food was really good. Being vegetarian I didn't expect much choice, but I was wrong about that too; inexpensive as it is, the variety was right for the cost. MOST IMPORTANTLY THERE WAS HARDLY ANY OIL IN THE FOOD, WITH NO COMPROMISE IN THE TASTE AT ALL. Even after repeated requests, I find it very difficult to get good food with less oil at hotels in India. The 5 stars are mainly for that reason. The ambiance, decor etc was fine, good enough for a small restaurant. Did not feel uncomfortable at all. I would definitely visit once more before I leave for India. read more

What a delicious meal! Me and my girl friend were surprisingly happy here. We both chose the special that comes with an appetizer soup or salad entree and desert for $22!!! Ech of course. Great place I'll be back!!! read more

Great food and quaint atmosphere. First trial of Indian food in the area. Used to California cuisine. The homemade cheese is very delightful. Chicken tikka masala was excellent (spicey but GREAT) and the Lamb Rogan Josh just as flavorful ( a little spicier than Tikka Masala). Great place! Will def. be going there again when in the area. read more
