This is a very nice 5 and 1/2 acre park along a lake in the Flamingo Gardens development, a mostly single family home neighborhood. Opened in July of 1986, it was Cooper City's ninth park to be built. There is a 1/3 mile walking/ exercise path, open play area, sand volleyball court, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, racquetball courts, and tennis courts. There isn't a parking lot. Several cars were parked along the fence on the grass.
I came to the park to use the exercise path and wasn't really expecting to seeing anything interesting until I came to the lake and saw a row of the cutest burrowing owls looking back at me. Burrowing owls are considered endangered, threatened or of special concern in nine U.S. states. Unlike other owls they are not strictly nocturnal and are active during the day. They make their nests in underground burrows, which are dug out by ground squirrels and they prefer open grasslands. This is the first time I have found them near water. I always love seeing them so this was an unexpected treat and made this a five star visit for me. read more
