The samosa chaat tasted more like a gravy than an actual chaat! Falooda looked like a cup of milk and icecreams with no sugar. This is a first visit review which I do not condone. However, I was so overjoyed with this experience I have to put this place on blast. I wasn't hungry but, wanted a snack and was in the area. From the pics, it appeared as though they served small appetizers. However, they also serve full entrees. As I walked up, there was a sign on sidewalk and on the front door displaying specials. I like this! When I walked in, a man with the biggest smile welcomed me! I LOVEEEE THIS! I had the typical kid-in-candy-store look & had no idea what I wanted. He hands me a paper menu (point again!!) and says I can take my time!!! What!?? (LOVE!) Basic social skills and customer service should be a given in any establishment IMO...Period & this owner had it down. I was immediately won over. I wasn't that hungry and the owner gave recommendations. I chose the Lilva Kachori. They were round fried balls of Lilva(Pigeon Peas) and spices. If you like Indian spices and heat...you will want this! It is served with two sauces, a cilantro and a tamarind sauce. Sooooo delicious. I could drink them both. Spicy! Unless, I'm a weakling but, I LOVED the kick of the Lilva and the Cilantro sauce. By the way, another first-time customer was sitting behind me eating and making sounds of utter joy. 4.5 stars! Came to visit a friend in Norfolk and we decided to Yelp a place for dinner and ended up at Tamarind! It's located in a pretty standard shopping plaza. The restaurant itself is not big and only has a few tables, but it smelled amazing the minute we walked in through the door. The place is very clean and well-renovated, with an exciting wall filled with words related to Indian food. The restroom was also spotless and modern. Place your order at the counter. The regular menu is not huge but has a good number of options, and there are also changing specials written on the blackboard behind the cash register. Yelp has Tamarind listed as vegetarian, but there are also a few meat dishes. Service at the cashier was AMAZING; we had one of the friendliest and most enthusiastic workers I've ever encountered at an Indian restaurant. The owners hired a great employee! You will receive a number and then your order is brought to you if you dine in. Most dishes are relatively inexpensive (less than $9), but it is marketed as street food after all. The size of each dish is not bad for the price, but my friend and I were hungry so we ordered a ton of food: vada, samosa chaat, classic dosa, chicken biryani, and falooda. We also got coconut juice and masala chai tea, respectively, to drink. The food took a while to come out because everything is made fresh to order, but we were told it would take about 15-20 minutes for our food when we placed our order. When it did come out though, it was piping hot and everything was extremely flavorful and delicious! If you're willing to be patient for the food here, I highly recommend coming for the excellent food with great service at affordable prices! read more

The food was overpriced, bland (after I asked that it be spicy), and the customer service non existent. If you like cricket then I guess this place would appeal to you. Ok, well first off, you can trust me on this one because I am Indian, haha. This is a classic representation of "Indian Street food" I love the "Chaat" here. I can best describe it as "a flavour blast" in your mouth. My absolute favourite is the "Dahi Sev Puri" it is light, fresh and just soo good! It has yogurt on it, so for those of you who dont like yogurt, just get "Sev Puri". The "Samosa chaat" is a close second! All the chaat here is good so try them all. They offer varying levels of spiciness, and the hot is HOTTTT "CHAAT" in hindi is to lick! (You will be licking the spoon, it's that good) The mango lassi is great too! The food is delicious! For the prices though one would expect better plastic ware! I got medium spice level and I like spicy food. The level was perfect/just enough heat. Because Yelp said this place is good for groups my group of 9 ventured out to try some Indian street food. This restaurant is NOT good for groups. The pics on Yelp even make the restaurant look spacious. It is not! It is a very small space and not good for a group. The food is interesting. Everyone in my group seemed to enjoy it. I'm sorry to say that I did not. It isn't the restaurant's fault. The people were super nice and accommodating. My problem is that I am lactose sensitive and most of the dishes have either milk or yogurt in them. Those that don't have curry (I don't like curry) or chili's. I like a little chili to flavor a dish but I don't enjoy a dish that has a predominantly chili taste. Indian food has many offerings that I love and can eat but, apparently, not so much when it comes to street food. The menu is limited (because it's just street food) so there isn't a full range of items from which to select. I love tandoori and would have thought it might be considered street food but I guess it isn't. The garlic naan is excellent and I can recommend it highly. I also had the Samosa Chaat without the yogurt heavy drizzle. I like samosas and garbanzo beans I just wasn't crazy about the tomato sauce they were in. One of my luncheon mates ordered it with the yogurt and loved it. So I'm thinking street food just isn't for me. I can't say enough good things about their customer service. I was in the mood for trying something different so i ve seen this restaurant on Yelp a few days ago and decided to go there. The owners were very nice and patient with all our questions. My chicken curry was very tasty, the meat was tender and perfectly cooked, tried the samosa also, was good. At most Indian and Asian places the rice has no taste so we were pleasantly surprised by the good rice here. My husband had the masala eggplant. The Lassi was tasty as well. Very clean place. This is my favorite place for indian food. This trip did not disappoint. There is something about the flavors here that are different than other Indian restaurants in the area. The owner and staff are very nice and keen on your needs. A small space inside and outdoor seating is ideal in this square in Norfolk. I was craving Indian food and stopped by Tamarind about lunchtime on a Tuesday. There was a steady stream of customers, but no waiting in line. I ordered the eggplant masala -mild- to eat here and it was delicious! Two perfectly tender, smallish sliced eggplants (each about the size of a smallish avocado) were served with a very generous amount of very flavorful tomato sauce. Freshly pickled cucumber and sliced onion and a mound of perfectly cooked rice accompanied it. I cut the cukes and onions and added them to the dish, added some rice and had a marvelous lunch. While I had originally wished for more eggplant, it turned out to be just the right, filling amount. Though not near my home in the Lynnhaven Mall area, I will make it a point to visit Tamarind often. Everyone was very nice and patient while I tried to decide what to try, and as many others have mentioned, Tamarind is very clean and brightly lit. I highly recommend checking it out! read more

Went for lunch and it wasn't too busy but as soon as I walked in the door the incredible aroma told me this place was gonna be good! Had the Meat Thali which is like a sample plate including two meat entrees, apple relish, rice, wheat naan, pappadam and gulab jamun, who could ask for more? The naan was very good to my amazement bc it was flatter than I'm accustomed to, the butter chicken and chili chicken were good but the gulab jamun will stick in my mind and to my ribs for a while! It's like a fried donut hole soaked in maple syrup and garnished with shaved coconut, YUM! Also had the samosa chaat as a starter and it was delish! And a mango lassi because you kinda have to. I've eaten A LOT of Desi food, in many different cities, and there was nothing I got here that hasn't tasted better somewhere else.
