Oops. I had the pork tomatillo, not the beef. Tried the Beef Tinga this weekend and it was delicious as well.

They have great pork tomatillo, chicken mole, or veggie (spinach!) tamales, as well as tamales of the Central American variety.

Mueller is further away, but I have all day to shop, and plan, and get my groceries for the week. Something about this location that just has an energy about it. I feel so much better walking around. The people, the venders, and the dogs. My gosh there are so many dogs. I'm a dog person, and they know it. I have dogs walking up to me. And of course I have to talk to them. Venders are great, you have such a variety of prepared food. Love the dumplings. But there is so much more. Veggies. Fruits, canned goods, baked goods, meats, cheese, eggs, pasta, raw milk. I mean it's just a lot of greatness. Love supporting famers and small businesses. Coming out in the community, and just feeling a connection. Literally recharges me. It's been a draining week, and the market was my therapy today.

Farmers markets are supposed to be welcoming, family-friendly spaces where local vendors, farmers, nonprofits, faith groups, and community members can come together safely and respectfully. Unfortunately, I witnessed something that made the environment feel anything but welcoming. There was a small religious group with a table at the market, and as someone passed by, they shouted offensive racial and religious slurs at the men working the table. It was completely uncalled for. Rather than engaging in any kind of respectful conversation, this person chose to be hateful and intimidating in a public community space. I understand that the organizers may not be able to identify or remove every person who behaves this way, but I do think the market should be more proactive about making its expectations clear. A farmers market should feel safe for everyone, including vendors and community organizations that may be more likely to face harassment. Clear signage, public reminders, or stronger policies against hate speech and intolerance would go a long way. I hope the organizers take this seriously and make it clear that racism, religious intolerance, and harassment are not acceptable at this market. The community deserves a space that truly feels supportive, inclusive, and safe for all.

We selected Green Gate because of the location (its one of the few farms actually IN Austin city limits), the variety of produce they offered, and the overall value. Every Saturday morning, we would take the short drive to the farm to get our fresh veggies. Some other CSA's have your veggies all bagged up for you ready to go. Green Gate does it a little differently, and we like their way much better. For CSA members, there is a chalkboard listing what is in the weekly share (i.e. 2 heads of broccoli, a bag of green beans, 1 head of each variety of lettuce, etc...) and then like at the farmer's market, you get to select your own. They also have a farm stand for non-CSA members or in case you need an extra squash (but trust me, you will never need an extra squash!), some eggs, fresh meat, flowers, or a tomato plant, you can pick that up there and skip the grocery store altogether. We really enjoyed our bounty and discovered some new veggies (hooray for kohlrabi!). We are eagerly awaiting the first Fall harvest. But be forewarned-you get a LOT of veggies and things could get ugly. Between my friend and me, we were feeding 2 two-member households. The veggies had no shame, and why should they? They were fresh, young, delectable. They took over my refrigerator and ganged up to intimidate my other food. Tortillas were hiding in the back, trying to go unnoticed. Yogurt was cowering behind Salsa, while Salsa was just trying to blend in. I found non organic store-bought Carrots withered and dead in the deli drawer. It appears to have been a suicide, but that was the last straw for the older inhabitants of my fridge. I could tell they were planning something big. After the Carrots incident I had to start giving away my excess veggies before there was a Mutiny on the Bounty.

Guests stroll the gorgeous grounds of Barr Mansion while enjoying live music, nibbling on locally sourced cuisine and sipping adult beverages. This year it was great seeing so many local beverages provided by Argus Cidery, Glazers, Hops & Grain, Independence Brewing Co., Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Tipsy Texan, and Zhi Tea. From savory to sweet the chefs prepared creative cuisine to share with guests. The portions are small enough to sample many of what the restaurants are serving yet large enough that one's appetite is satisfied as the event comes to an end. Some of my favorites dishes were: Italic - walnut olive oil cake with mascarpone and blackberry. I loved that this dessert was more savory vs sweet. Lick Ice Cream - Roasted beet & mint Ice cream with honey cream, goat cheese and chocolate waffle. Delysia Chocolate - Raspberry truffle; potato, smoked cheese, bacon and chive truffle. I don't know how chocolatier Nicole Pitel comes up with these flavors but she's a genius! The Bribery Bakery - strawberry lime brown butter blondie. This was my first time trying Jodi Elliot's sweets and I was incredibly impressed. Eden East - Hay smoked red fish with pickled garlic chip, lemon confit, dill kennebec potato pancake and crispy fish skin. Bonneville - savory Korean style braised lamb steamed buns. The company I work for purchases a table to this event every year through a co-op partner as they believe in SFC's mission and services they provide our community. SFC empowers adults and children to grow their own food by providing education and resources. Their nationally recognized Happy Kitchen program is a cooking and nutrition education program that helps grows skills in food selection and preparation. SFC also has a Farm Direct program which brings together local growers, schools, urban residents, and institutional food service operations worksites in demand of fresh produce through weekly SFC Farmers' Markets and direct marketing projects, such as farm-to-cafeteria, farm-to-school, and farm-to-work. Events like the Farm to Plate put money back into this wonderful organization.

The twist: Maytag bleu cheese, bacon and white truffle are all in the potato salad. Truffles and Potato Salad... WOW - what a combination. My taste buds will never be the same. They cater to vegans, vegetarians and carnivores alike. If you are Vegan, you will love their Roasted Carrot and Fennel Soup and their Pumpkin Ginger soup. Hot or cold, as vegan fare, it is the creamiest soup I have experienced, sans the cream. Their Smoky Tomato soup is out of this world, and dare I say, much healthier than the local chain restaurant alternatives. Cheese lovers, get ready with the bread and your spreader, they make a cows milk lemon infused fresh cheese, soft, spreadable and melts in your mouth. I have never had anything like it. I walked away with 2 soups, the cheese and the potato salad. I almost forgot about the potato salad because it was in my fridge less than 24 hours before gobbled up. For local, artisan foods, they were priced very reasonably. One pint containers of soup were $5 each. Potato Salad in same sized container (not filled to top) was $6 and 6 oz of cheese was also $6. Chef Blake Moffitt is truly an artist and the name of his business: Elevated Artisanal Goods, Inc. clearly fits the caliber of food he is creating. A must add to your Saturday morning stops. I so happy that when I saw the sign for ordering at the Sunset Valley Farmer's market, I sprung for it, even though I didn't know what a heritage turkey even was, other than it was free range. Well, it is more than that. From the website: http://www.localharvest.org/features/heritage-turkeys.jsp "Prized for their rich flavor and beautiful plumage, Heritage Turkeys are the ancestors of the common Broad-breasted White industrial breed of turkey that comprises 99.99% of the supermarket turkeys sold today. But the Heritage Breeds still exist and are making a comeback. Most breeds of heritage turkey were developed in the United States and Europe over hundreds of years, and were identified in the American Poultry Association's turkey Standard of Perfection of 1874. These breeds include the Standard Bronze, Bourbon Red, Jersey Buff, Slate, Black Spanish, Narragansett and White Holland." The experience at Alexander Farm was cool. I, of course, forgot to pick up my turkey at the right day, so they called me and I drove over before work just after sunrise on Wednesday morning, with a cooler in my trunk. The Farm is only about 8 miles east of the Airport and it really is a farm. The gentleman who met me at the gate assured me that my turkey had lived a good life hanging out in the pretty pasture behind the barn. How cool is it to pick up your turkey from the very farm it was raised in??!! All the other animals at the farm looked pretty happy, too, enjoying the beautiful morning. As for the turkey, it was AMAZING!! Although much leaner and less breasty than the factory farmed grocery store models, I was amazed at how juicy and flavorful this bird was. I have always hated the white meat of the turkey and went straight for the wings and thighs, but this turkey's breast was just fantastically moist and tender and delicious and had real flavor. It was not like any bird I have ever had before. So so so so worth it. It really wasn't very expensive, given that these turkeys take twice as long to grow. At 5.99 a pound, I think these are probably the least expensive heritage birds available in the country. A recent article I read in my research said that they typically sold out quick at $10.00 a pound most places. I seriously feel very lucky to have had the experience of eating this bird. I don't think I will ever eat a factory farmed bird again. Good job, Alexander farms!!
