This place has been in Hamilton forever, but only recently was I introduced to it. My bestie kept telling me I need to try their gravy, so of course I started off with a poutine. Let me tell you, they do poutine right. I love a lot of gravy and cheese and they didn't disappoint. It's nothing fancy, it's just basic and delicious. I went with a gyro and that was ok. I did try a bite of the beef sandwich and I wish I had that over the gyro. If you go here I highly recommend the beef sandwich and poutine. The gravy literally makes everything so good (skip the gyro tho). Inside was clean, but obviously it hasn't been updated in years and that's one thing I like about it. It has character. Still love this place - family run, greasy spoon burger-dive vibe, yummy sandwiches, solid-but-not-great fries really benefit from yummy beefy gravy, and is a nice change from typical fast food and preservative-laden processed garbage, like those "eat fresh" (hahahahaha!!) criminals. :) TIP: Ask them to add swiss cheese and horseradish to your roast beef sandwich (it's real, not a fake 'horsey sauce'). And 100% yes, get gravy on the fries. I see funny complaints below, that a $10 combo is too expensive (have you bought a combo at McDorks or Substandard-way lately??) Or that they prefer their beef more juicy and seasoned, "Would your highness like some yorkshire pudding and mulled wine with his 'special' prime rib, for $10?" lol Tally Ho deserves our support, especially when trashy fake-chicken chemical subs, and bland cardboard pizza with dipping sauce, is selling like hotcakes all over Ontario. And don't even get me started on day-old factory donuts that are frozen, shipped, and later reheated in-store with "double-doubles" and icy sugar-slushies, lol. We need more Tally-Ho joints, and fewer soul-less franchises slinging processed garbage. It's a better-than-fast-food, mom-and-pop joint, that is basic, and unpretentious, and they do what they do very well. Just go. Enjoy! read more

I've gone here a few times with friends and each time I have been disappointed with my roast beef sandwich--it just isn't that special, and it's far overpriced. It's one of those places you get a craving for every few months. Decor is vintage family run diner style, with dated furnishings and washrooms, but that's fine. They're known for the roast beef sandwich, which comes on a large hamburger type bun with sesame seeds. The beef is thinly cut and must be topped with the unique gravy to be fully appreciated. I've been coming to this restaurant for as long as I can remember, my father has been a patron since he was around my age and it's the one place we always stop at if driving through Hamilton. The place itself is a decent size with some booths and some regular tables, large windows and pretty decent restrooms. The food, while not fast food does have some pre-cooked elements such as the roast beef which is made fresh daily. The beef baskets are great if it's something you like and the gravy is pretty good too although I'm not a big fan of it as I don't really like roast beef. The chicken souvlaki pita is one of my favourite dishes, the chicken is cooked over a charcoal flame and is amazing. My absolute favourite dish though is the Greek salad, the dressing is fantastic and they will add as much or as little of the salad items as you want. The staff are great as well, they know us well enough now that they don't even have to ask us our order. They're always happy and will talk to you as they work. Legit the best fast food joint I've EVER been to. Tally Ho should be every other fast food's role model. Is your girl Wendy's open til 2am every night of the week? Nope. Can the clown offer up real fresh meat sandwiches for the same price as their sad Big Mac? I don't think so! And their roast sandwiches? You wish Arby's. I finally made my first visit to Tally Ho. I've lived in this area most of my life and I realize now that I've wasted much of that time not eating at Tally Ho. Well no more. I've been 3 times since I discovered it 4 days ago. I ain't even kidding'. So far I've had the roast beef, the corned beef and the fries and gravy and coleslaw. They were all delicious, served crazy hot which I adore, fast and friendly. The gravy is nothing short of perfection. Very thick. Very brown. Very hot. A perfect addition to the fries that though are merely frozen fries are the best frozen fries I've ever tasted. They're fried crispy and like all the rest of it, served bitchin' hot. Lots of parking. Lots of seating. Friendly efficient staff and open til 2am (3am on weekends). read more

I find they put too much gravy on the sandwich, so when I asked for them to put the gravy on the side she wanted to charge me $1 extra for each sandwich. She is charging extra for gravy that comes on the sandwich. I just find it very petty to worry about a dollar when I'm spending 25 dollars in your restaurant. I came here yesterday, for take out and totally forgot to review them.. I heard a lot about this place and the recipe staying the same, since back in the days.. of course I wouldn't know anything about it, it was my first time here and we were heading towards a burger joint, until someone raved about this place anyways.. I'm glad I got to experience it, although I'm it a huge fan of roast beef, here is what I ordered: Poutine - Very good and the gravy is so flavorful.. Yummy Roast Beef Sandwich - At first I tried it and I thought it was very fresh, perfectly tender and melting in your mouth and it doesn't feel so heavy either.. I found it a bit bland but got full pretty fast, so I saved the next half for later and ate it, half hour later and it was very flavorful.. The trick is to let the gravy and meat, sink into the bread and it will be, a very tasty sandwich! I added a bit of salt and pepper to mine and some extra gravy, on it as well. I would definitely come here again, perhaps I'll try other items, on the menu? Places like this are smart, they stick with what humans know and never change the recipe. Maintaining quality is the main purpose, for good food. They keep it simple and regular. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is probably one of the worst sandwich places ever. Arby's is better. The gravy was the only good thing. The beef sandwich was messy and you literally can not put it down or it'll fall apart. I'm from Los Angeles, but stayed in Dundas for a while about 10 years ago, and came here to eat a few times. I still think about the juicy roast beef sandwiches with dipping sauce, and French fries with gravy. There's not one restaurant in LA where you can find anything similar to these. I decided to give this restaurant a try. I ordered the beef basket which had a roast beef sandwich, fries, coleslaw and gravy. The sandwich was decent but alittle too much beef was stuffed in. The beef was an okay taste but they could have seasoned it more than the bland taste it was given. The fries were as good as fries can taste. The coleslaw could have been bigger to compensate for the large portion of fatty foods. The price was decent (approx. $8) for the portion but it wasn't anything special. read more

I was very excited to try a local restaurant that specializes in roast beef, and went out of my way to come here. First bite in, I wish I'd just gone to Arby's. I do not understand the hype, at all. This place had the worst value of any restaurant I've eaten at. The gravy is clearly powder mix, the beef was dry and flavourless. The fries were also flavourless and obviously frozen. For the price (just under $10 for a classic roast beef and small order of fries...no drink), I felt embarrassed. This tasted like cafeteria food at absolute best. I won't be going back. read more

Roast beef on a bun, fries and gravy. An old classic. The old lady behind the register should retire and let the younger girls take over, they do it 10 times better. I've been eating here since I was a child and still love it. Might be an idea to include drinks in the combos and not over charge for individual drinks.
