Wow! Talavera did not disappoint. For me fine dining is about a feeling, of being truly cared for and seen, and that's exactly how I felt. Complimentary valet service greeted us warmly upon arrival as gentlemen opened doors and welcomed us with genuine smiles. Chivalry is alive and well here! The host remembered it was our anniversary and moments later, a complimentary champagne toast arrived! Followed by the most incredible chawanmushi, personally presented by one of the chefs. The porterhouse was out of this world, perfectly sized for two and the Troon Margarita was a revelation. Unlike spots where the views outshine service or food, Talavera delivers on every front. Talavera was one of those dinners where the view alone makes the drive worth it. We arrived around 5:15 PM and watched the sky slowly shift through sunset. By the time we finished dinner, we were sipping drinks and dessert in that perfect desert dusk moment -- honestly one of the best parts of the experience. The atmosphere felt like a blend of date-night elegance and relaxed family dinners. Some couples were clearly celebrating anniversaries or special occasions while other tables were more casual, which made the space feel welcoming rather than overly formal. Service was attentive and thoughtful throughout the evening. The staff were especially great about checking on allergies, and my hot water pot was constantly refilled before I even had to ask. Food-wise, we tried a mix of tapas and mains. Everything we had was well prepared and flavorful. That said, the price-to-value ratio for some of the entrées didn't fully land for me. The upside? The portions were generous for a fine-dining restaurant. If you're someone who appreciates larger portions at upscale spots, this will definitely work in your favor!!! Hot water rating: 8/10. While refills were constant (amazing), the pot had a few lingering tea leaves in it -- I'm guessing from earlier afternoon tea service. Would I return? Absolutely. Went for holiday high tea on January 1. It was cold and rainy so we were seated inside where the view is limited. It's a pretty venue but the food and service were exceptionally poor. We received old and dried out pastries and were limited to one each, meaning our totals were fewer than 10 bites for over $100 per setting. Even asked for another single bite and was denied. Waited and waited....and waited to be served but boy were they quick with the bill. To top it off, I left my jacket behind and called one hour later to have them put it aside. It was a NICE jacket. Love this place for its view! I think just for the view and its calm vibe, I would definitely come back! This place is in the four seasons resort, and had a dinner here when we stayed at the resort. People were friendly, yet we were barely asked if we needed anything and I think we waited very long time for getting our food and our second drink, like a lot longer than usual from other places. Bruschetta with jamon was good, jamon was so good. Steak was actually ok, it was big but just ok. We ate here twice during our stay and loved both meals. We sat on the patio and had amazing sunset views both nights, which is where I would absolutely recommend you try to sit. Getting right to it, I haven't had a steak like this in a very, very long time. I splurged on the ribeye and it was so perfectly medium rare, tender, and well seasoned I didn't even bother with either of the sauces it came with. Paired with the mushrooms...wow. If you like steak, a steak is a must. We tried several apps over both visits and the octopus, ensalada, and pan con tomato all stand out. I also really enjoyed their signature Manhattan - it's a little different (darker) than what you'd usually get but if you like them, get this one. For other mains we tried both fish dishes, and on the second night we got the paella since everyone else seemed to be getting it. Well, it's a signature dish for a reason. Other than the scenery and the ambience this restaurant was a MAJOR disappointment. Wait staff was pleasant but very inattentive. Had to ask repeatedly for water and drinks to be replenished. Lots of dishes were ordered (it was a large crowd) and without exception it was all disappointing. The tapas bread was soggy and a poor vehicle for supporting the toppings. The paella was the furthest thing from authentic, I wouldn't even call it paella. Those people in the party that ordered steak seem reasonably pleased but several did not finish their plates. Afterwards they explained they were just being kind and didn't want to ruin the dinner by complaining. For a place that touts itself as upper tier, I can only say it fell woefully short. read more

I kinda felt sick after my massage so I wasn't able to taste much of the food so we took the paella home which was really salty. We shared the gambas al ajillo which was just so juicy and flavorful. My boyfriend got the filet and he loved it! AMAZING! Went on a romantic date and the food, ambiance, and service was outstanding! We ordered the seafood dish as an Appetizer which was great, they give you hand crafted plates specially made for that dish. I got the scallops, and my boyfriend got the steak which came with different salts and sauces, but my favorite was the butter. Whatever was in that butter is so good I put it on my scallops. This place has an amazing view, I would go at sunset. And ask to be sat outside. We went on a Thursday so it was not crowded at all so if you were into taking nice photos without a huge crowd around you I would go on a day that isn't busy like during the week. I came to Talavera for their Christmas buffet and was just awestruck. To begin with, getting to dine here at daytime is in and of itself a rare treat. The restaurant is usually only open in the evening. Most mentions of Talavera references "the view," but experiencing them on a crisp December day was also remarkable. I had the option of sitting on their patio, but I opted for indoors guessing that I would get more of the total experience. I think I made the right choice. Another perk of sitting inside? The people watching. This is an interesting and well-dressed crowd (yes, do put on your best). I haven't been around a crowd like this in a while where I wondered about their story so much. What I liked about the buffet spread was that it was nicely curated and not overwhelming. I went to the Fairmont Princess for their Thanksgiving buffet, and while they had tables and tables of options, most of it wasn't the best quality or even very original. At Talavera, there were some small communication hiccups (the person who gave us the tour of the buffet wrongly described one station as being for "pasta" but it wasn't on offer) but since this restaurant is only for tableside service, I was impressed. The pastries were really exceptional (envision Saguaro cactus cookies with a Santa hat!), and it was clear that the entire team had devoted hours to making this a memorable experience. I was a huge fan of the prime rib station as well. To my surprise, the cocktails weren't groundbreaking, but I didn't order any of their signature ones. I'd recommend sticking with wine/champagne options, to be honest. There were some small service options, but nothing that distracted from the overall experience. If anything, the staff seemed really nervous about the execution of the buffet since this wasn't part of their normal operation. Whenever we made a request, they did their best to fulfill it. In the end, Talavera delivers on all counts. It has the ambiance, the professionalism, and the menu. This immediately goes to the top of the list for me for bringing in guests from out of town or other special occasions. This is truly an experience and worth every penny. read more

We had the paella and it was wonderful. The wines they recommended were great. They brought out a fresh pre-appetizer of melon and jamon. We ordered an appetizer that I cannot spell and it was awesome and beautifully presented. We ordered the smoky cheese cake it was one of the best desserts we ever had. The restaurant is beautiful and the view is stunning. I decided to go with the paella and loved it. It was made with pork belly, chicken, chorizo, mussels and lobster. It was rich in flavor and prepared perfectly. They have a fun list of specialty cocktails and after going back and forth I decided to try the Juniper and Jam. On April 11, my wife and I along with dear friends went to Talavera in the Four Seasons hotel. TL;DR, it was fabulously adequate. I debated about writing this review because I have refrained from writing any negative reviews of restaurants in light of their suffering during the pandemic. That said, the Four Seasons is a 'big boy' and should be able to handle my basically irrelevant critique. Let's start with the restaurant itself. Its singular claim to fame is the view. It is absolutely lovely and as they say, location is everything. Unfortunately, while the view is spectacular the rest of the restaurant is stuck somewhere in the mid nineties. It badly needs a facelift. Heavy wood everywhere, uncomfortable seating. Even the bathrooms felt dated. There are too many cool restaurant concepts in town to justify this decor. Service, as with everything else was adequate. The waiter seemed to know the menu but was quite aloof. His assistant however was quite pleasant and the food arrived in a timely manner. Again, absolutely nothing wrong with the service but nothing special either, particularly for a quiet Monday night where they had been advised that we were celebrating a 30th anniversary (yeah, wife is a saint). So let's talk food. I really like it no matter the level of dining. I love the pizza at Yo Pauly, a joint. I love the gyros at Gyros Plus, a Greek joint and a perfectly prepared baked potato with some bacon bits, cheddar cheese and sour cream is a slice of heaven. I'm not a snob. But ... if I'm going to spend the kind of money required to eat at Talavera, I expect a truly special experience. For appetizers, we ordered the Lobster Tostadas. What could be bad about lobster on a cracker? Apparently nothing but the chef decided to smother the star ingredient pretty much hiding it from the palate. I should have read the menu more carefully and noticed the number of ingredients which included aji amarillo, mango, avocado, salmon egg and pickled red onion. Talk about burying the lead. This seemed like an amateur mistake but apparently its been on the menu for a while. Next, we had the grilled octopus. I'm not a huge octopus fan but my wife loves the stuff. Her comments were that the octopus was nicely cooked but that's all she tasted. Kind of the opposite of the lobster tostada. For my entree, I had the special, a braised lamb shank. Braising just about any meat is my favorite preparation and I simply adore lamb. While I wasn't disappointed in the dish, I've had better versions in several restaurants at far lower price points. The lamb was tender and the braising liquid was reasonably flavorful although I thought the portion a bit small. Now here's where I get cranky. My wife ordered the Talavera Paella. While not a general food snob, when it comes to certain dishes, I am seriously picky, especially regarding a dish that I've spent years perfecting at home. In Spanish, paella means frying pan. When you make paella, one of the most important techniques is ensuring that where the pan meets the rice and other ingredients, a crispy caramelized crust forms. It's called the socarrat (usually pronounced either socret or sofret). Note that I said caramelized, not burnt. While the seafood in the dish was pleasant, the socarrat was simply burnt rice and it was pretty unpleasant. What I couldn't understand was why the rest of the rice in the dish seemed fine. After doing a bit of research, I suspect that the rice is precooked and then stored in the refrigerator. When they need to make a paella, they take the cold rice and put it in the pan. In order to bring the rest of the dish up to temperature, they end up burning the rice on the bottom. The bottom line is that Talavera is trading on its location, in the Four Seasons and at the base of Pinnacle Peak, for its pricing. As I started this review, it is fabulously adequate and that simply doesn't justify the pricing. If I return, it would be after dinner elsewhere for drinks at the neighboring bar that has a similar view. read more

We were ignored and treated like wandering gypsies. Im sorry, but if spend 1000's of dollars to stay here, I should be allowed to order something as simple as an app and a drink and call it a night. We were directed to the onx bar or whatever because we didn't want a "full dining" experience - whatever TF that means. Pretty sad actually. The food was mostly awful. Thursday dinner and wasn't busy at all so no excuse on the horribly cooked and serviced meal. The duck was raw and had zero flavor and the "PRIME" steak meat was definitely low low quality cuts. The side dish of carrots were, I would assume, not cooked together as some were cooked and some were raw and crunchy. We got Gelato as their lack of much of any dessert was more than apparent and they brought us the wrong ordered gelato flavors. They didn't box the small amount of food I wanted to go but instead handed me a box. They didn't offer to cork the bottle of wine which was a $250 bottle which we forgot to bring home with us. Worst mean ever and they hovered over us but did nothing to service us. So annoying like they were just eaves dropping. Amazing what a well educated chef without ego? Maybe? can do to food. The Iberico Pork JYST as outstanding and just as unique as in the Worlds Oldest Restaurant in Madrid called Botin'. The paella? With authentic pearl rice and amazing seafood (in Arizona? I KNOOOW) The charred octopus perfectly tenderized and prepared. The shrimp Ajillo just like grandpa used to make. The homemade churros and the most amazing cheesecake I've ever had. As a local I will be returning. This may just be the best prepared meal I've had in these years where everyone is a celebrity chef. Keeping the menu RELATABLE is the sign of genius in my opinion. Too many chefs seem to operate on the notion of: If you can't convince them. Confuse them. Well done chef. The pre-dinner cocktail was presented well and was a good drink and I'd recommend the Smokey Apple to anyone. Starters were decent but the beef tartar wasn't as expected or like I've had in other places. It wasn't bad, but when your eating raw meat, you want to be assured the quality is spot on. Pre-mixing with seasoning and other stuff can hide the quality. I don't think it did, but it could. Where the meal let me down was the paella. I've had paella in Spain so I guess my bar is high. There was plenty of meat, and it was good, but the rice was meh... rice makes a good paella and this rice was stodgy, and lacked good flavor. We ate at this restaurant a few years back and it was a very special evening and worth the money spent. This time, I can't say the same. I was excited to try this restaurant but wow was I underwhelmed by the food! The bad: Avoid the ribeye at all costs! We paid $80 for the worst steak I've had in recent memory. It was so bad my Dad said he though sizzler had better steaks. It also was supposed to come with a chimichurri sauce but instead it was just topped with some chopped peppers and cilantro. It would not have redeemed the steak, because you can't really come back from slightly over-cooked, poor-quality meat. The broccoli rabe was also awful. It was super salty, but even if it wasn't over-salted, the components just didn't work together. At the end of our meal, our waiter offered to tell the valet to have our car ready but it seems like he never delivered the message since we ended up waiting 5 minutes before telling the valet who ended up sprinting to go get our car. It's a minor inconvenience, but it felt like a bad ending to a bad meal. The good: The esquites and churros were good, but I think it's hard to mess up these simple dishes. The cheese bread was OK but seemed good in comparison to the rest of the meal. The views are great, as were the cocktails. I forgot my ID and they wouldn't let me order a drink (which is fine, not holding that against them) but I was able to sneak some sips of my Mom's drink before getting a scolding from the Manager (he definitely could have been nicer about it). Very beautiful ambiance and view to experience our amazing Arizona sunsets. Talavera is only open a few days a week so plan accordingly. We didn't start out so great because we were waiting a bit too long at the table before being acknowledged while other people who came in after us were already hearing specials. When our server did arrive he was very nice! Very good martinis....APPETIZERS.......pan con tomate, noble bread with tomatoes and garlic, fresh ingredients and a strong garlic flavor, I loved it! Then the pan de queso , almost like cheese biscuits AMAZING!!! Good firm texture with a soft center. Lobster tostadas were very small but amazing, lobster, mango, avocado and salmon eggs on a crisp chip, a tad hard to eat but delicious. ENTREE....talavera paella with just about every seafood in it including head on prawns and mussels with a great saffron flavor, then I tasted the 1/2 from a friend at the table good lemon and rosemary flavor.
