Mangiare Monterey - Class is in session!

    Mangiare Monterey

    (5 reviews)

This past Sunday, we attended a cooking class with Mangiare Monterey. Sarah and Reggie, our hosts…read morefor the evening, were inspired by a class they attended on a recent trip to Spain. They were looking for something similar in the Monterey area and because it did not seem to exist, decided to create their own based on Sarah's Italian family recipes. The classes are done in the Comanche Cellars tasting room at 412 Alvarado St in Monterey. As we arrived, we were offered a glass of Comanche's Pet Gnat, a sparkling rose of Pinot Noir. For this class, the focus was on sauces. The cooking stations were set up with each couple preparing a different sauce; a meat sauce, spicy sauce and vegetable sauce (each tomato based). We had a small charcuterie to snack on as we cooked as well. I loved that all the prep had been done - no chopping vegetables. Everything was ready to go so after introductions we jumped right in with Sarah guiding the group through the process. Nicole, Comanche's resident sommelier, was on hand to offer pours of different wines which would pair with our foods. After we had prepared the sauces, we were treated to a family style meal which featured a homemade focaccia with a delicious ricotta, a fresh salad and of course pasta with the opportunity to try each of the three sauces. Which sauce was the best, I can't say. Although if I had to choose, I was somewhat partial to the vegetable. We were offered more splashes of wine while we ate. We finished it all off with some key lime cookies and a bit of Sarah's family's homemade Limoncello. It was such an enjoyable evening and something really different we had not had an opportunity to experience before. I think this would be so much fun for a special date night or just an opportunity to get together with a friend for a fun evening out. The next class will be held on February 23. Perfect pairings! The recipes were accessible and didn't take a lot of time so I look forward to making it home. I highly recommend attending!

Ok let's get this out of way. Busy bee is a caterer first and cafe second. I say that because…read morethere's no inside seating and no bathroom. Order inside, grab a pager, and pick up at the window. Do I care? Not really. The food is quite good. Let's start with the biscuit. It's HUGE, moist and flaky. The honey chipotle sauce doesn't work for me but honey butter is fine, even if it's a bit sweet. I'd prefer salted butter on this very good biscuit. Old Faithful: voted best breakfast burrito a few years back and it's good but best ??? I don't know. The bacon and veggies are much better than the ham or sausage. Biscuit Sandwich: the flaky large biscuit can make this a little hard to eat and, as I said, I don't love the honey chipotle sauce. The Capitola: Chicken salad sandwich on herb bread. Not heavy on the mayo like some places. Defn repeatable. Mixed berry muffin: the berries were fresh but the muffin itself didn't stand out. Probably need to try the cinnamon roll. Staff is friendly.

So good I was excited for my next visit before I even ordered! One glance at the menu and my eyes…read morelit up with the endless breakfast possibilities. Do I go cinnamon roll? Breakfast burritos, and if so, which one? Or do I go breakfast sandwich? I do love a good biscuit afterall. I had originally come across Busy Bee's on Yelp and was drawn in by their massive cinnamon roll, so that was a must. Perfect for sharing too, since it is so big. For my main breakfast though, I got the Biscuit Sandwich, which was massive. It was loaded up with bacon and the scrambled egg spilling over the side. Made me full for many hours, but was so worth it. Came here on a Saturday morning and the place was poppin'. Time for hot breakfast items to come out was about 20 minutes after ordering. Luckily that did not include the cinnamon roll, which we got right away. I had planned on only taking a bite or two and saving the rest to share with others later, but it was so good I ended up taking about 5 bites before saving the rest. Can't wait to come back here and try some of the breakfast burritos. They have some very unique options you don't typically see, so excited to see if they taste as good as they sound!
