Spicy scallop and California roll
Sara H.

Went to Takahachi with a friend and had such a great experience. The sushi was super fresh and surprisingly reasonably priced for NYC. It's a casual, low-key spot which we really appreciated--no pressure or rushing, just good food and a chill vibe. Definitely a solid go-to if you're looking for quality sushi without the fuss.

Very good food, seems very affordable at first glance but the portions are quite small when they come out. Try and get a few items to share. We loved the pepper tuna appetizer, and the sushi is wonderful. It does come out in waved, so not everyone will have all of their food at the same time. Just eat and enjoy! There was a wait, even on a weeknight so be prepared. Very limited selection of drinks, but still fun!

Few Japanese restaurants have an authentic Japanese feel to me these days, but Takahachi had me feeling like I had just teleported into a lowkey family run sushi place in Kyoto. 7/5 for the ambiance. I have yet to find Sushi in East village that blows me away, so I was excited to try this place based off the ambiance alone. I STAN a good seaweed salad, but this one really missed. It was 4 different types of seaweed and you pour the dressing on yourself, idk it just really didn't do it for me. I hadn't been that let down since John Frusciante left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2007. However, the sushi plate for 2 truly restored my hope for Takahachi. At $59, it was a great portion size and the fish was fresh. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the fish. The only miss on the plate was the shrimp nigiri, but I don't understand how people actually like shrimp nigiri. I just firmly believe it doesn't belong with pieces of QUALITY nigiri. Anyways, I WILL be back. My new goto sushi spot in EV. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Great, affordable place for sushi in the East Village. The staff is always very kind and friendly and it's a very no frills, straight to the point place. Would recommend!

Toro sashimi and salmon wasabi sashimi

I was looking for a sushi spot in east village and this was the highest rated so I had great expectations for it. I got a table right away however they were a bit understaffed and there was a big wait to get the order in and receive it etc. I wanted sashimi so I ordered a miso soup to start, salmon wasabi and an order of toro with a side of rice. It was overpriced and small portions. I ended up ordering a yellowtail roll because the sashimi wasn't enough food for me. It felt like they had given me the leftovers of their fish. Even in the roll the yellowtail was almost nonexistent and was mixed in with a weird sauce to cover up the fish taste. I paid $50 with tip for tiny pieces of fish. What. A. Rip off.

orange roll was our favorite! in the top left

HONESTLY, for the price, this blew me away but WARNING, i am not a sushi expert don't come at me. what we got: sushi for 2 (5/5 TOTALLY RECOMMEND FOR TWO PPL): ok so overall, the fish was SOSOSOSOSOOSOS fresh and soft. it was not fishy at all and i'm super picky with raw fish (i don't get raw fish often since i am so picky. also, with all the sushis, the seaweed tasted stronger but was REALLY good the salmon nigiri was SO good, one of our favorites. it was just so light and soft and delicate and melted in our mouths. the california roll was BOMB. i think they make it with fresh crab? you know how most california rolls douse the imitation crab with a BUNCH of mayo? this doesn't have ANY and you can really taste the crab. also the avocado was so soft and fresh. orange roll was probably our FAVORITE because it was just so refreshing and the tempura bits made it so good. also, the salmon inside was SO SOFT. those were the most memorable ones hehe. the tuna tasted the fishiest, but not too fish! the hamachi was imo, SUPER creamy and the shrimp was REALLY fresh overall, RECOMMEND hehe

There was a wait for a table of two on a Monday evening. Our table was ready in about 30 minutes or so. It wasn't a big deal. Once we were seated, we waited another 10-15 minutes to get water and put our order in. I feel bad for leaving an average review for the service as they were busy, but it made for a pretty undesirable/awkward dining experience. I don't think I've waited that long after seating to get water and to place an order. They may not have the staff to meet their usual indoor customer demand but to include take out as well as outdoor dining folks, I'm not surprised that they were slow. The food itself was decent. We liked the shishito peppers, the hamachi jalapeño as well as the sushi dinner for two. But I am a little scared to try this place in person again.

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

They share a takeout menu and it's super easy to order--text what you want to the phone number on the website and pickup in ~20 minutes :). You pay on a handheld and they don't ask for tip for takeout. I love this process and truly wish more sushi restaurants in LA adopt the takeout box. The only one I know of is hefty but also $200 each lol, making Sanyuu's $69 omakase and $78 Everything don, not to mention the $30 giant salmon nigiri set, A STEAL! I enjoyed most of the pieces but I will say I don't like their amaebi or uni at all. I'm not sure what kind of uni is used here but it's the type with a very strong mineral flavor & aftertaste that I don't find enjoyable. We're spoiled by easy access to live spot prawns everywhere and fresh SB uni. Despite this, I wouldn't hesitate to come back if I lived in the city.

The slices aren't thin, delicate, and melt-in-your-mouth as one usually gets in a sit down; they are extra thick, and I had to really bite down on some of the pieces. The rice was nicely seasoned and was cooked well + portions are also big to match those thiccccc salmon slices. To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived. The restaurant is a little hard to find as the windows are blinded and the sign is a piece of paper on the door.
