I had the chicken teriyaki here, which came with a side of rice and miso soup. The miso soup had a solid taste, but seemed to be lacking something, either more tofu or more seaweed. The chicken teriyaki was okay, although nowhere near the most flavorful I've ever had. I did really like the broccoli and potatoes (these were so yummy!) that came with this dish, so much so that I ordered another side of them. Given the raving reviews on Yelp, I was expecting a bit more from Jintan. The restaurant itself is pretty unassuming and doesn't carry a name on the exterior, but the inside is clean and stylish. My friend and I were seated on the mat area, where you have to remove your shoes and sit cross-legged. This was one of the best parts of the meal, even though it really isn't the most comfortable seating choice since our legs cramped up. Jintan offers a decent selection of sushi, sashimi, ramen, udon, appetizers, and the like. Their sashimi combos are pretty affordable ($20-40) as previous reviews stated and some of their basic rolls are $5-8 with special rolls being $13-16. My friend and I opted for the curry udon ($12), mononoke ramen ($12), sweet spicy shrimp roll ($7), and red dragon roll ($14). I wasn't too impressed with my ramen; it was lacking in flavor and the pork was salty. The rolls were good but nothing too special. The curry udon was also good and the broth was lighter than expected. We had friendly service and Jintan is a decent place to go to if you're looking for pretty cheap sushi in the area. We asked about the ramen and the mononoke special ramen is pretty much the same recipe as their predecessor Saporo (it's tonkotsu ramen).. It's really good rich broth. Packed with toppings, tender flavorful chiasu, boiled egg, corn, etc.. all for $12. Service was sketchy. Loved everything about this Japanese restaurant, from the decor (which was super chic and minimal and traditional Japanese) to the delicious and large bento box I ordered for dinner last night. Going in, I had pretty high hopes because my roommate who'd been before raved about the place, and Jintan lived up to her hype. Their menu is pretty extensive, ranging from udon to ramen to sushi, and pretty normal priced for Japanese, especially in NYC. My friend and I both got the unajyu (eel over rice) bento box combo, which cost $22 but also came with 6 pieces of sashimi (salmon, tuna, and white fish) and two sides, so overall a pretty economical meal. The eel was so delicious -- the perfect amount of juiciness and softness. And the sashimi was very delicious and fresh too, with a hint of lemon that added a nice touch to the flavor. We both left very satisfied and full. Already drooling thinking about the next time I get to have the unajyu box!! read more

Second, I would like the publicly acknowledge the SHAMEFUL comment left by a man name Mark D on 3/4/18 which said: "The waitress complained about a $5 tip amount on a $63 bill. It was a first date and it was embarrassing and inappropriate. In Japan, tipping is considered rude, this place isn't authentic, it's as American as it gets. I came to your restaurant to have a good time, not to be your waitresses employer." Wow. First of all, remember you're in New York. She is paid the New York minimum wage for servers, and not only expects, but needs your tip, as it is customary HERE. Your tip was literally 8%. I don't blame her for being annoyed because that IS cheap and you should be embarrassed. Hopefully that was a red flag for the person you were on a first date with. Second, just because she may have been Japanese does not mean she needs to adhere to Japanese tipping customs as she obviously is working in the US. Do you go into a British pub and tip like you're in England? I'd hope not. Also, if the place is not "authentic" to you, what is your argument for tipping like you're in Japan!? Lastly, if you are going out to have a good time, then you should expect to pay for your service properly, just like any other restaurant. My boyfriend and I have decided this is going to be our favorite Japanese restaurant in East Village. The store front is unique and markedly Japanese with the paper lanterns, paintings, and wooden window frames. We made a reservation same day just in case, and we chose to be seated on the tatami mats next to the windows on 1st avenue. All the food was delicious and worth the value. We each got a bento box combination - so much food for $18.50 each! I got the sashimi (2 salmon, 2 tuna, and 3 white fish pieces) + salmon teriyaki box which came with miso soup, rice, and 2 side dishes. I went with agedashi tofu and seaweed salad. My boyfriend got the sashimi + tempura box. We will definitely be coming back for more meals. Next time, I want to try their ramen and udon noodles! read more

Even once we knew, the only record of it seemed to be on Foursquare, even Googling variations of The Jintan NYC. And yet it seemed pretty popular among the locals, totally filled up with people who looked totally at ease nestled into tatami mat tables around the front edge of the restaurant or easily chatting over a big bowl of steaming misty miso. It deserves to be known better as the food was quite good and the menu extensive (including not just a serious lineup of sushi but also several chirashi options, katsu don, ramen, and some tempting appetizers and specials.) The whole setup, plateware and aesthetic seemed far too cohesive to be brand new so I'm still confused why there's barely a trace of the restaurant by name to be found. Unassuming Japanese restaurant for the win. You have to take your shoes off if you sit by the mats at the windows. The rolls are a good size and all the fish seemed incredibly fresh. We got two large rolls, one small roll, one appetizer and two pieces of sushi on the side and we were so full by the end of our meal. For 60$ I would say it was plentiful sushi for just the right price. The miso was not the best I've ever had but it was still tasty. Came here for dinner last night. The interior decor reminds me of a restaurant in Japan. Their soy sauce saucers had a really traditional Japanese feeling to it. Everything inside was wooden and they even had tatami seating near the window. We ordered the sushi sashimi combo, black cod as appetizer, and also a beef/tofu ramen. The sushi and sashimi were good, but nothing special that I couldn't get at another Japanese establishment. However, the black cod and beef/tofu ramen were delicious and unique. The cod basically melts in your mouth and was grilled to perfection. I also enjoyed the beef/tofu ramen. It was super flavorful with a hint of sweetness to it. They also provided me with ramen pepper! I have never seen this addition. After adding it to the ramen it really enhanced the Flavor! Definitely go here for the appetizers and ramen! read more

I don't know why this restaurant isn't more popular! But then again, that's kind of the charm. Super cute, understated restaurant that has a very authentic feel to it. It's easy to pass by since it's not flashy or very well known like Ippudo or Soba-Ya but it's totally worth dropping by. Pro-tip: Opt for the tatami style seats instead of the regular tables. It makes for a very cozy, intimate dining experience - and adds some extra hilarity if the person you're eating with has extra long legs xD. My friend and I only weren't super hungry so we decided to share a variety of appetizers. I especially enjoyed the Beef Tartaki, the Age Gyoza (basically like regular gyoza but EXTRA deep fried) and the Rock Shrimp. Am definitely coming back here to try either their ramen or their sushi dishes. The menu is pretty damn comprehensive - it basically hits all the classic Japanese dishes you could ever want. We wanted to go to Momofuku which had a 2hour waitlist, we searched for good ramen and ended up in this place that doesn't even have the name outside. We waited around ten minutes for a table for a party of six, not a bad deal, huh? A waiter told us it had been closed for a while and was then re-opened by new owners but they hired exactly the same staff. Super friendly, great food and a big menu. I wanted to review about it because it's worth the try and I absolutely loved everything. You need to check out the bathroom, it has a weird toilet (a bidé buttons and everything). Jintan (alternatively known as Beron Beron) is my undeniably my favorite restaurant in East Village. It serves the most authentic Japanese food in the village and has an extensive menu, from udon and ramen to sushi and sake, as well as quite a few vegetarian options. There's something for everyone and the prices are reasonable, with majority of dishes ranging from $10-20. Whenever I have friends visiting from out of town, this is the place I take them. It's a running joke with my roommates that I come here once a week -- which I can't say is completely untrue -- but it really is a testament to how amazing this place is. What also sets Jintan apart is their ~5 tatami tables. They have mats where you take off your shoes and sit cross-legged on the ground. Of course, for those less flexible, there are standard tables. I love the decor and the quality of the food at Jintan, and I really can't say enough great things about the restaurant. If you're in East Village, be sure to stop by this gem! read more

My family and I arrived at the restaurant at around 6. The store was fairly crowded but we were seated fairly quickly. The waitress was very friendly and expressed enthusiasm. She knew the menu well and was happy to explain the items to us. We ordered an ikageso, spider roll, tempura roll and sashimi deluxe. The ikageso was fried octopus legs served with spicy mayo. It was very fresh. The sushi took a little longer to arrive and when they did, I was a bit disappointed. The sushi is served cut into four large pieces almost as large as coasters. Due to its size, it was very hard to eat. Whereas I would usually be able to pop a bite sized piece of sushi into my mouth at the usual sushi restaurant, this restaurant's sushi required multiple bites. However, after the first bite, the remainder of the piece fell apart. I truly believe that the sheer size of the sushi made it impossible to taste the sushi well. The sashimi deluxe included miso soup/salad and a bowl of white/brown rice. The selection of fish included yellow tail, salmon, tuna, octopus, and fish roe. I would like to say that my experience was a good one. Both the vibes inside the restaurant and the service was great. Ultimately, I was most disappointed with the size of the sushi. read more

What a nice little surprise this place is. We pass by it all the time and always remark on the cool and genuine exterior. There are no identifying signs on the outside but you can tell it's a Japanese restaurant. I really appreciate the decor and the tatami mats. I love sitting at those tables. On the menu it says The Jintan which is not on a sign outside the restaurant nor is a menu posted outside. I kind of like that though. Seemed mostly like local neighborhood New Yorkers dining there too. Which I appreciate. I even liked the music as did my boyfriend. The sushi is reasonably priced and they have a wide variety. I got the tako sunomono. The octopus was fresh delicious and generously cut. I also got a salmon avocado roll which was big and fresh. My boyfriend got a spicy tuna roll and a crab roll both he really liked. And our friend got the dragon roll which he liked as well. Definitely happy this place is in my neighborhood. At first I had wanted to go to Shabu Tatsu, which is nearby, but there was a one hour wait for that. We decided to come here instead; and wow I'm definitely coming back here!! The restaurant appears to be very authentic. We even got to sit on these cushions with the low tables! I had the Mononoke Special Ramen, which was really tasty. I tasted the beef teriyaki too and it was excellent. We were (back) in NYC for a week. As former New Yorkers, we always enjoy trying new restaurants. My brother has been in the West Village for over 25 years (same apt). I asked him if we could spend the evening walking around the East Village, as I wanted to see the changes. One of his favorite restaurants is Jitan, so we went there for dinner. It was a Friday, so the (small) place was packed. The servers were attentive. My brother had his favorite Shashumi and loved it. When I travel prefer cooked food, so I ordered the Shrimp Tempura; it was plentiful and delicious. My husband ordered the Bento Box for a nice variety. The beer was cold. ENJOY!!! read more
