Was really excited to try out Taiwanese Eats on my drive up. I was able to order ahead and got the regular sticky rice roll, soymilk, braised pork rice bowl, and a side of the spicy garlic pig ears and yuzu wood eared mushrooms (about $45 before tip). Parking was pretty awful since the pick up spot is located in a random neighborhood amongst some industrial sites. I had to double park and hope that picking up my food would be quick. About 4 other people arrived the same time I did, all for UberEats or DoorDash. I received a text as I was stepping out of the car that my order was ready, but had to wait a few minutes for someone to come to the window as there was no way to flag anyone down. She had to go back to the kitchen area to grab my food as none of the orders she had initially come out with were mine. The sticky rice roll was truly very sticky- I had to peel off some of the excess rice but the filling inside was good and very flavorful. The soymilk was good too, not too sweet and paired well with the rice roll like a traditional Taiwanese breakfast. The braised pork rice was pretty standard, and out of the 2 side dishes, the spicy garlic pig ears was definitely way better compared to the wood eared mushrooms. I liked that they sliced the pork ears really thin but they could've cut the pieces up a little smaller. The mushrooms were bland, wouldn't order again. Apparently they don't have a dedicated person working at the window. So when you arrive, you have to scan the QR code on the right, find the order # on your original receipt that was emailed to you, fill out an online form and then ring one of the applicable wireless doorbells on the left to get someone to come to the pickup window. We went there when they first opened, and they already ran out of some ingredients that they use to make the rice burrito. So instead of letting us know, they just crossed out the ingredients on the paper wrapper, as if it didn't come with those ingredients. An absolute hidden gem! So glad we stopped by here. I've been wanting to try Fan Tuan for a long while now and had no clue where to get my hands on one. I really was worried when we showed up and found out that it was a ghost kitchen, but wow, their food is an absolute hit. We ordered the Purple Rice Braised Pork and Purple Rice Pork Floss with a side order of spicy pig ears. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's everything you didn't know you needed out of a burrito. So many textures that somehow magically come together to make something so delicious. Also, this place has great value, I appreciate the generous serving size. The fried dough stays crispy for white awhile so we didn't have any issues with that getting soggy. They put just the right amount of mustard greens in each fan tuan. Also the rice was perfectly portioned. It's easy to go heavy handed with rice in general, they did a great job at keeping a nice thin layer of rice around the fillings. The spicy pig ears were shaved so thinly, the texture was still nice and bouncy but easy to chewy through. Parking can be a little bit scarce when you're here. I mean absolutely loaded with various different sides and I mean cabbage, green beans, tea egg, and a heaping amount of rice. I'm always a huge proponent of more Taiwanese food for the Bay Area but unfortunately the food here came up short. Whenever we try a new spot, we tend to order a sampling of the menu so take that into context. - 4* Purple Sticky Rice Roll with Swordfish Floss 紫米魚鬆飯糰: the best out of all the food we got. Two things that prevented it from being rated higher was that the rice was way too sticky and was ironically hard to separate off the plastic wrap (yes I know it's sticky/glutinous rice but it was overcooked to the point of being gooey). They also use swordfish floss which is known to be high in mercury. A personal preference (hence not docking a star) is that they are too big. Rice burritos are on the go type of working class food, you should be able to easily eat one, rather than this giant monstrosity but it's priced reasonably for the size. - 2* Popcorn Chicken 鹽酥雞: way too salty, the texture of the chicken was stringy, almost like chicken breast was used instead of chicken thigh. If it was thigh, it was tougher than expected. - 3* Crispy King Trumpet Mushrooms 鹽酥杏鮑菇: good but again, way too salty. This would've been a favorite has it been seasoned more reasonably. - 4* Fried Chicken Cutlet Bento 炸雞排便: the fried chicken cutlet was good, only slightly too salty with accompanying side dishes and cabbage being good. - 1* Spicy Garlic Pork Ears 涼拌豬耳: basically a pile of mush, overcooked to the point of turning gooey and gelatinous rather than nuanced and QQ - 1* Taiwanese tempura 台式椒鹽甜不辣: quite honestly terrible. The texture did not taste or feel like fish cake as much as flour filler mixed with some fish paste. Also way too salty. - 3* Braised Pork Rice 滷肉飯: ok but not amazing. Generous portion of pork for the amount of rice. Not too salty. - 3* Black Bean Soy Milk (Sweeten) 黑豆漿(微糖): nothing stood out about this, lacking in the Taiwanese breakfast feel of a soy milk in terms of texture and flavor. Parking is a known issue and pickup was awkward even after signing in with the QR code and waiting several minutes. All in all, I'd rather go to Marina for their rice burritos. read more

We got the purple rice sticky rice roll with egg and a regular sticky rice roll. Both rice rolls were excellent, and they were much better than the rice rolls we got at a recent food Asian eats festival. The braised pork was pretty good as well and on par with O2 valley, although it's not as good as my favorite Taiwanese restaurant in Fremont. The popcorn chicken was excellent - somehow still crispy after driving home and just the right amount of spice. Their soy milk tasted fresh and had the perfect amount of sugar. Summary: Actually the best fantuan in the Bay Area?! Details: This ghost kitchen has been on my radar for quite a while now, but given how far out it is, it's usually a hard sell to my partner, who'd rather find an actual sit-down restaurant. Fortunately for me, we were in a rush the other weekend, and an easy to-go option was exactly what we needed. And how glad I am for it, because they served up what is probably the best fantuan I've had in the Bay, ever since Taiwanese Bento in the East Bay closed up shop. While I found the rice a little too wet, their youtiao was shatteringly crisp, and there was a good stuffing amount of other ingredients in there as well. That said, we found the pork floss much tastier than the swordfish floss, which was a bit TOO fishy for us. The braised pork rice bowl was also done quite well. Not exactly authentic, but we found this to be a good thing, because authentic means overly sweet, and theirs was definitely not that: that said, it did venture into a bit overly salted territory, even when paired with the rice.
