I had eaten in this restaurant before. However today 8.29.22 I was disappointed with the service. Upon requesting the bill I got a price higher than what was written in the menue. Ive asked the the waitres to explain it to me. She refused and belittled me. I requested again and then she explained that the price was changed and not noted on the menu. Ive told her that this was suppose to be presented when ordering the food or at least a little apology when asking me the pay... She didnt accept the complaint and was really rude. So what can I say, it's hard to get good Puerto Rican food and they cook great. I give them a three because I want them to read and do better so that they are here for years to come. Love this restaurant but they have a lot to work on. The customer service needs to improve for sure. Almost every time I come here there's something that goes wrong. They either mess up my sandwich telling me it doesn't come with cheese and it clearly states on the menu it has cheese, ask for grilled they give me breaded and after telling the lady 3 times GRILLED when I check my sandwich before I leave and she's looking at me like I'm doing something wrong(and it was breaded) I asked if it could be fixed and she said it's going to take longer. Out of frustration I left. I have been given the wrong empanadas, resulting in me driving back to the restaurant and a simple I'm sorry is given. Mind u this has happened twice. This is ok once but multiple times there's a problem. I am very specific when I order, repeating my order back to them because I know they periodically mess up and still something is always wrong. Now I'm at my max when I'm charged $1.50 to get some extra mayo ketchup to go. If I eat at the restaurant I have endless sauce But to go they are charging. I ordered a meal and 2 empanadas I don't think 3 sauces is to much to ask. I have been left on hold for over 15 minutes just to place and order and when I arrive to the restaurant... mind u still on hold the girl who put me on hold is crossing the street going to her car. This place is official and worth the urban safari you might have to undertake to get there. North Newark is not idyllic perhaps, but it is a place that has not changed very much over the last 40 years. For that alone, you owe it a visit. It is still an underclass and working class Puerto Rican enclave. Unlike other Puerto Rican enclaves which have been largely swallowed up by waves of immigrations from other countries in Central and South America or other parts of the Greater Antilles. So, you can feel the beat of humanity here. Young girls gather around their phone screens on front stoops and in windows. Sofrito wafts through the air, and that's not just because you're in a quadrant of Puertorican eateries. I love how this place is separated from a Puerto Rican night club by only a thin alleyway. In the Summertime, people eat outside in the front and in the back. The music blasts. The parking looks hectic as patrons come in the evening, and the double parked cars have the effect of triple parked cars, as the newly constructed bike lane carves out the space closest to the curb. No worries, there's parking right around the corner. See the boricua barbershop on the corner with the red steps? Make a right, and you'll find a spot on the street there. Old Puertorican men sit at the counter eating their pan and cafe, their sopas and lechon. I come for the oversized portions and the heavy handed use of Sofrito as well as the pasteles. The yuca frita and empanadas are golden. The standards are high in this place. Nothing is getting poured out of a can onto your plate. Everything is made fresh and on demand. The atmosphere is genuine. Beautiful people with welcoming spirits. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. read more

A very good spot in a decent side of town. This restaurant has the sound of PR and the art and taste to go with it. The mofongo is great. I suggest the chicharron De pollo or garlic shrimp. I used to love this place, it lost the charm. I ordered two orders of pollo asao, white rice and beans instead I got quarter legs with the most humongous drumsticks attached no breast yuck like wth, the damn rice was pegao and the freaking beans salty as f#%k. After reading the reviews we were excited to try Taino's. We got there at and were seated right away, great sign! Ordered and waited over an hour for our meal. We were disappointed to see that the takeout orders took priority over customers that were actually in the restaurant waiting to dine in. We ended up having to ask for our order to go as we had 8 pm tickets for a show. Hopefully our next experience is better. read more

This is my favorite Puerto Rican restaurant anywhere, and it is only 2-1/2 miles from my house which makes me lucky to be so close. My favorite dish is red snapper which is served whole and comes with rice and red beans along with a salad including fresh Bermuda onions. I have tried a few of the juices and they are tasty. The staff are very friendly and can tell you a lot about their home town of Isabela in the northwest of the island. It is bright and cheerful inside and is getting popular during lunchtime. I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. What a hidden gem! It appears to be a family owned establishment. The worker made us feel very welcomed. We started off with 1 beef empanada and 1 accupurdia with yuca. It came pipping hot which means made to order. Delicious! I ordered the weekly special carne asada. Its 8 bucks and comes with rice & beans and salad. I got tostones with it. Lots of food for a great price. My cousin ordered a platano sandwich with steak. She said it was as good as the one from when she was in puerto rico. For dessert, my cousin and I had the flan with cake. Never heard of it but it was mouth watering. The food is flavorless we ordered chuletas, pernil, and the seafood mofongo literally none of it had flavor but luckily we got takeout so we were able to add our own seasonings. The pernil was way too soft and way too moist and the sauce for the mofongo tasted like water and butter and the seafood was missing a whole lot of flavor it was gross. The chuleta was dry all the food definitely needed some adobo and garlic. Very disappointed I spent so much on terrible food you would think yt ppl owned this spot. I wish I could give this review less then the 1 star it does not deserve. First of all I was there almost 4 weeks ago, spent over $150 in a food order. Was happy to have found a place close to my house that I can order and have authentic Puerto Rican food. No complaints there... However, my future mother-in-law came to town from PR and is a diabetic. Them not being from the area stopped there to get her some food. She ordered Empanadas, Alcalpurria and Sopa de pollo. The empanadas and alcalpurria came out in approximately 15 minutes. The soup however, NEVER CAME TO THE TABLE!. When the waitress / Cashier asked how was the service, she was told that the soup never came out. She gave the last of the soup to people who ordered after they did. When my fiancé asked where is the soup they stated "they ran out'. Almost as if they knew the people and they had preference. I have referred this place, as a food critic that I am, to many of my colleagues and co-workers. As a proud Puerto Rican I love to encourage my fellow Puerto ricans and uplift them. This service that happen today is unacceptable. Note to the owners: You need to better staff your establishment and pay attention to the new faces you see, because you never know who may be walking in and the influence they hold. read more

After driving around for a while and passing on other restaurants --nothing against Dominican food or simplistic restaurants, but we wanted to go somewhere authentic and presentable-- we were ecstatic when we found Tainos. This is definitely a hidden gem! The authenticity of the cuisine is unbeatable. I highly recommend their Alcapurrias for starters! My favorite is the masa but the yucca ones are delish as well. You must also try their mofongo with the criolla sauce or garlic sauce on the side. The seafood salad (carrucho, pulpo y camarones) is so yummy! You can even do that with the mofongo and it is to die for. Aside from the delicious food, their service is outstanding. The owner, Maytee is so sweet and she truly cares about sharing our cuisine as well as our loving culture. If I can give this lower on reviews I would I didn't even get to try the food, that's how bad the experience me and my family endured. My wife was craving mofongo all day so when we looked for a spot many people we knew recommended this establishment, I took my two nieces as well just to add. We had ordered over 70 dollars worth of food, people came and went and we still hadn't gotten our food. Over an hour I tell you, over an hour. Even the councilman of newark came with an entourage of people ordered their food after we had ordered our food and still got their food and still we waited. And after trying to complain to another employee we find out it was the owner of this establishment. She made it seem as if we were in the wrong as if we were getting an attitude. But after waiting an hour and thirty minutes and with the attitude given to me and my family we just up and left. Never again I would rather pay a higher price mofongo then go there again. To be treated as such no. No people skills, and no respect for customers. Instead of equal treatment to the customers, you can tell who they showed favorable treatment to. Councilman or not equality should have been given and not this treatment never again! read more
