I always come here when I want to pay a small amount for a whole lot of food! Especially when theres nothing for dinner and I still want to have left overs for lunch the next day! They always have different varieties of foods different meats and rices and they always serve people extremely well, whether you eat there or take out. (Which I always do) There really is no comparison to this place for the great taste of the food and the awesome price! P.S. I tried to venture out and give them a chance. For an early saturday afternoon, this place was dirty. First turn off upon walking in the door. The service was horrible. We stood there at the counter more than 5 minutes just waiting to be acknowledged. Keep in mind it was not busy or crowded. But you can clearly tell, the employees are biased toward spanish speaking customers, it was sorely obvious. Then when I was asking questions, the lady had a major attitude and began making up prices as she went along. No thanks and no problem, you won't get my money then. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant a few years ago. I tried to overlook the poor customer service as I know there is a language barrier. I've ordered food many times only tried the oxtails/stew chicken and rice. The last time I ordered the chicken for my husband. I didn't think to check it as I never had a problem before. When I got home I put his food in the fridge. When he opened it approx. 4 hrs later he said it was spoiled ( bad smell when he opened)and the bowl was full of oil. I called the restaurant the next day and once I said manager they hung up. After calling all day I finally speak to the "manager". After asking what I ordered he said he ate the same thing yesterday and it wasn't old. Stay away!! read more

First time here. I went there based on the Yelp reviews. There are a few ladies working there serving the food. Don't plan on a fancy restaurant if you plan to dine in because it's anything but fancy. That being said, I ordered a Puerto Rican pastel and arroz con gandules (rice & pigeon peas). Both were awesome! My family had other things like soup, mangu, pernil, empanadas, and batidos (shakes). Portions were tremendous and food was tasty. That's what counts for me. Bathroom was clean. Yes, that's a must. However, one of the cakes on the counter had a bit of mold. Big turn off. I alerted the server, who was surprised when she saw it, and she said she'd have it removed. After seeing that we decided to skip dessert even though they did have a nice selection. I would probably go back for the home cooked food, especially the pasteles. Don't eat here! They have a $13 minimum for Debit cards which is insane. They can't afford the card machine so, the customers have to suffer. Also, the women are RUDE. They are not very polite at all. I am a Latina woman and was appalled by the attitudes of some of these ladies. So, for the customer service alone I would say, There are better places to eat in North Newark. Spend your money elsewhere! read more

The staff is friendly and patient. My issue here is that I believe it's too expensive for being Spanish food. Maybe this is the going rate in the area but $8 for "lunch special" is too much compared to the $6 and free tostones I used to get in the Bronx. STAY FAR FAR AWAY - I've been here a number of times but the last time I came for food the servers wouldn't even acknowledge my presence. I stood at the counter, by myself, for about 4 minutes before someone came to ask me what I wanted. I ordered a plate of steak and rice and she charged me $16. I've never paid more for than $8 for it in the past. I told her nevermind and left. Before I would recommend it but now I recommend you stay away. Came here on a Saturday with my daughter. We were both excited about coming here and very hungry. The food looked and smelled delicious, but that's all that I can say. The 5 women behind the counter refused to acknowledge or serve us. After standing in the empty line looking directly at them we finally got eye contact by one lady, because they pretended not to understand simple English language. The lady that did finally stop was very short and irritated that she had to speak to 2 black women wanting to eat in the restaurant. She rolled her eyes and shrugged us off as if we were homeless people off the street begging for a free meal. Needless to say we walked out in disbelief of the blatant disrespect, ignorance and racism displayed by someone a shade lighter than us. I'm really sad to write this because it really hurt to be treated that way. Used to come here all the time, especially in the summer after going out since they were open late. Food was great, a lot of the staff speaks good English too for all us non Spanish speaking Latinos lol. However, I haven't been back since summer '11. Recently, the food has become rather bland and the meat is so dry, to the point where I only ordered steak, because at least I could somewhat enjoy it with the gravy. Even after all of this, I continued to patronize their store, until a recent visit. When I walked in, I noticed they made renovations to the dine-in area, refreshing. I patiently waited for the server to finish her conversation before being served. I usually get the steak and white rice for myself, with lots of gravy , and pork with rice and beans for both my parents. The steak was fine, $6 dollars like always but they tried to charge me seperately for both pork and rice platters. $10 dollars for the pork and an extra $4 for the rice, because they no longer serve it as a platter.. What?! Trying to pay for those renovations huh? Needless to say, that was my last time eating there. Tu Pais on Broadway in Newark has much better food. Delicious Dominican food! The only difficulty was the language barrier and they don't take debit cards. The minimum purchase to use a debit card is $10. But they give you so much food! As for language barrier they understand majority of what you say but you have to repeat yourself a lot and be specific, other than that the food is great and it's not expensive. They also have this great desserts, I highly recommend the 4 leche cake. read more
