It's hard to remember the time PS, the more we charge ahead into the AS era the more the past becomes fuzzy, fragmented and frankly pointless. I can't remember what life was like for me before the advent of the Universe's Greatest Kitten and I'm beginning not to care. Everything starts and ends with Steve. Step aside assorted mystical deities, there's a funky black kitteh in town. Steve, or to give him his full title Unstoppable Steve 'Awesome' Summers-Jackson, came from this excellent pet shop on York Road. I've been going here for years for the wide range of food and treats, fishies and fishy related frippery and to buy small furry things whose entire purpose in life is to make me feel cuddly on the inside. As soon as we saw Steve we knew he was the one, he'd already made a huge impression on the staff in his time there by virtue of his mega meowy awesomeness and they still ask how he's doing every time we pop in. Great shop, great staff, happy and well cared for animals and an excellent example of how to do things right in a tricky and often poorly delivered industry. If Steve could say anything other than MROOOOOOOWWW, MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and PRRRRRUPPP I know he would give a double thumbless up.

I love pet stores that actually have animals inside for you to look at and paws for thought really do have a wicked reptile selection. I'm not a fan of them as they creep me out a lot but I kind of like looking. They provide care sheets for loads of different animals in store which is a really good service and all of the staff really know their stuff about how to look after the animals properly. As Susan's review said, they advise the RSPCA on exotic animals so they really do know their stuff.

Unfortunately my voyeuristic interest in pets of the slimy and scaly variety is all too often spoilt by a shop that keeps its animals in cramped or unhygienic conditions (yes, I know it's not a zoo, but still...). Happily, I encountered no such problems at Tyrannosaurus Pets, an 'exotic' pet store that stocks lizards, snake and amphibians. Quite aside from having one of the best pet shop names ever, this shop is a credit to its trade with a shiny, modern shop floor; helpful, knowledgeable staff and - most importantly - spacious, clean vivariums filled with content animals. When I visited I was quite open about the fact I'd just come for a gawp, but the staff treated me as if I was a paying customer, and told me lots of stuff about the logistics of keeping lizards and snakes that I'd never heard before, despite pet shop loitering being something of a habit of mine. If you're thinking of buying an unusual pet or already own one and need to stock up on accessories, this is the only place you should need to go in Leeds.

It's nice to hear that it is at least one other person's face and not just mine. I popped in on a bit of a whim, looking for dog treats and to see what was going down in the latest pet shop in ma hood. There is a wide range of merchandise at fairly reasonable prices and the animals looked well cared for, so there is a star for that. But the staff? Genuinely bamboozled by their attitudes, and I mean attitude in the very literal teenage huffypuffy 'I hate everything' sort of a way. I asked to have a look at some collars that were behind the till, and was met with silence. Actual for real silence. Staring right through me silence. SO weird. So I asked again, more silence, so in a very English was decided to babble my reasons for wanting to look at the collars. Not a single damn word. The girl just turned slowly (revolving for eternity with the centrifugal force of internal rage?), reached for one random collar and slapped it on the counter....then looked away. Just so very very odd, to be THAT bad a customer service is really an art. To be that rude a human being interacting with another human being is quite unnerving. I should have said something, and believe me as I left my potential purchase (more fool you lady, I have LOTS and LOTS of cats who I'd happily buy diamante collars for) and walked out I knew I was in for a long argument with myself in the shower later with all the awesome statements my brain just couldn't come up with at the time. I wont be going back to such an unwelcoming place, no matter what the convenience...I'll stick to making the effort to go to Paws For Thought on York Road where I am guaranteed good advice, as much browsing as I want and *faint* a smile. So, top tip for the staff at Paw Prints? Ladies, if you hate your job so much that you death glare your customers out the door....then the service industry is probably not for you. Perhaps bouncer or loan shark would be a better sphere of employment.

I've recently adopted a rescue…read morecat and of course there are many things that we needed to purchase to make the wee one at home. So we decided to make a shopping tip to Pets At Home to grab everything we needed. Although the store is huge and has a large dedicated cat section I found that the range was a touch disappointing. The selection of toys wasn't all that impressive for starters - the catnip toys were all a little expensive, though I may come back for one to see if she likes them. The other toys included a short stringy bit of felt on a stick, with feathers and a bell, some plastic balls, little material mice and a few other more expensive options. I wasn't much inspired, knowing what my cats at my Mum's house like to play with, so bought a few balls and the felt string thing. She's a bit non-plussed with them sadly! The food section didn't appear to sell Iams biscuits either, which my Mum feeds our cats at home, only the Iams soft food in small packages. Arg. We opted for Whiskas but sadly they too appear not to have agreed with her! Hopefully it'll just be the move and change in food which is bothering her. Other than that there is a large section for litter and most other things, scratching posts and the like. It's not that the store is lacking anything major it's just that I didn't always find the precise item that I wanted. I didn't find any cat beds, for example. Perhaps they were out of stock - it was a Sunday that we visited! Staff were friendly enough this time, but unfortunately it wasn't quite as useful as I'd hoped! It won't stop me from shopping there again, however, as it's still a great shop with lots to choose from. I'll have to be a little less picky, is all!

After a few weeks he started to get ill again, our hearts sank. Thankfully our vet is open on a Sunday (it always seems to be a Sunday) and after a quick trip he advised us that our cat needed filtered water and a special diet. Not just filtered water but a water fountain for cats, where on a Sunday afternoon would I find one of those? Racking my brain I remember passing by this retail park in Meanwood and vaguely recalling there was a pet superstore there. At this point I must have looked quite distressed as I flew in through the door repeating water fountain over and over again, but the staff showed no sign of being alarmed. I was taken over to the cat section where a choice of two awaited me. I instantly relaxed now my quest was over and as the sales assistant took over the rather cumbersome box my water fountain came in I went to have a look around. They have everything pet related you could ever need, obviously I had to treat my cat to a new collar and some treats after all he had been through. They also have some cute bunnies (can you have ugly bunnies?) and sleepy hamsters, I was very tempted one animal to look after is enough for me at the moment.
