Unfortunately my voyeuristic interest in pets of the slimy and scaly variety is all too often spoilt by a shop that keeps its animals in cramped or unhygienic conditions (yes, I know it's not a zoo, but still...). Happily, I encountered no such problems at Tyrannosaurus Pets, an 'exotic' pet store that stocks lizards, snake and amphibians. Quite aside from having one of the best pet shop names ever, this shop is a credit to its trade with a shiny, modern shop floor; helpful, knowledgeable staff and - most importantly - spacious, clean vivariums filled with content animals. When I visited I was quite open about the fact I'd just come for a gawp, but the staff treated me as if I was a paying customer, and told me lots of stuff about the logistics of keeping lizards and snakes that I'd never heard before, despite pet shop loitering being something of a habit of mine. If you're thinking of buying an unusual pet or already own one and need to stock up on accessories, this is the only place you should need to go in Leeds.

Instead, we go there so frequently because we are basically a couple of kids in men's bodies who love squawking, shrieking animals of all varieties. They do birds, fish and rodents as you'd expect, and, as is the case with the food/cages/toys that we go in to purchase, the selection is wide, and the prices are low. Love it.

I'm talking for people who like their swimming things to be kept alive. They've got loads to look at. From different species to all the stuff you need to keep them. Next it's the wonderful world of the reptiles and they seem to know their iguanas from their well erm other iguanas. I don't mind admitting my reptile interest and knowledge is somewhat limited. If you like more conventional animals you'll still be fine here and get your laughing tackle around things for a host of creatures including dogs, cats, parrots, small birds, hamsters, rats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Tailwaggers is a very cute pet store. They sell all the usual things that you would want from a pet store, various animal feeds, flea treatments, specialist pet items and so on. They also do a range of dog and cat baskets, cushions and toys - and loads of really cutesy items that in a lot of ways pleases us more than the animals themselves! The door way also has a number of advertisments, almost like a community board, with all kinds of useful information and numbers. I think when I finally can afford to have my own pet cat I will almost certainly be visiting here to set myself up for pet ownership! Certainly the staff are friendly and helpful enough to answer any queries you might have if you too are thinking of getting an animal of your own.

Merlot and I quite often come in as a treat (for him, i'm not too bothered about chewy sticks and squeaky toys). He walks around having a good old sniff of every chewy and knuckle bone and picks out what he shall be having a chomp on later in the day. he also likes to have a deep sniff of the hamster bedding for some reason, but that is by the by. Angela runs the shop and has quite a dry sense of humour, but so clearly loves all animals and always has a cuddle with Moo. Her blind Irish setter is always about somewhere too and is a real sweetie! As an aside, If anyone is wanting puppy/dog training lessons...Angela is the person to talk to as she does evening classes in Headingley, Alwoodley, Otley, Harrogate and at the dogs trust (I've just looked that up, I didn't know it!)

Step aside assorted mystical deities, there's a funky black kitteh in town. Steve, or to give him his full title Unstoppable Steve 'Awesome' Summers-Jackson, came from this excellent pet shop on York Road. I've been going here for years for the wide range of food and treats, fishies and fishy related frippery and to buy small furry things whose entire purpose in life is to make me feel cuddly on the inside. As soon as we saw Steve we knew he was the one, he'd already made a huge impression on the staff in his time there by virtue of his mega meowy awesomeness and they still ask how he's doing every time we pop in. Great shop, great staff, happy and well cared for animals and an excellent example of how to do things right in a tricky and often poorly delivered industry. If Steve could say anything other than MROOOOOOOWWW, MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and PRRRRRUPPP I know he would give a double thumbless up.

I love pet stores that actually have animals inside for you to look at and paws for thought really do have a wicked reptile selection. I'm not a fan of them as they creep me out a lot but I kind of like looking. They provide care sheets for loads of different animals in store which is a really good service and all of the staff really know their stuff about how to look after the animals properly. As Susan's review said, they advise the RSPCA on exotic animals so they really do know their stuff.

The parrot (who's name I unfortunately don't know) sits in the middle of the store, chatting away all day and all night, and you have to drag yourself away from him to realise that this is actually a pretty nifty little pet store. The parrot is the only bird in the store, but crammed in next to him is a cute selection of rabbits, gerbils and hamsters. If furry little rodents aren't your thing, look no further than the back wall, where there's an impressive array of fish, of both the tropical and everyday varieties. In terms of non-living items for sale, Mutley's has everything you'd expect from a decent pet-store - food for all types of pet, cages, tanks, leads, toys, treats. In closing, it's a lively pet-shop with plenty of character and enough items to ensure you won't have to look elsewhere, but you might find yourself going in even when you don't need anything, just to talk to the parrot.

Really friendly small shop. I was looking at getting guinea pigs after a breeder fell through on…read moreme. My friends had said they'd had pet from there with no problems. We originally rang the york road branch and they mentioned they had some younger guinea pigs at the Green road branch. Which was really good of them. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They gave me a care leaflet to take with me and advised on how to change them onto different foods. The guinea pigs had been well handled and it shows in their development. It would be 5 stars however the piggies nails were in need of trimming they offered to do them there but it got overlooked. Happily my friend helped me trim them and they are lovely well adapted sows.

This pet shop is ok for things such as food, bedding, housing and toys. Only a small range of animals such as fish, birds and rodents. Can buy reptile food and avoid the traffic on the York Road so it can be quite handy if you live on that side of Leeds.
