All of his regulars were kissing his a** to get average service; it was unhealthily saccharine. They said they were so busy so busy so busy it would take 4 weeks, apparently a common excuse for them. Even still, they wanted me to do two separate appointments for a simple pair of pants, treating it overly carefully as if this was a wedding dress. All I asked for was a hem and for the waist to be taken out 1 inch which would've meant then that my pants would have been ready in eight weeks? So, I asked to take out the pants and do the hem together, but he acted like this was sacrilegious, getting upset. I had called first and the woman picked up without even saying hello, she was talking to other people, finally she said they had 8 people out the door but couldn't give me an estimate of how much time it would take if I showed up, and she wouldn't accept an appointment. Rude. Ok fine, she was not good with customers, sometimes that happens, people have bad days, but the reputation made me give it a try anyway. My mistake, I should have judged by the dismissive phone call. The reputation of this place is not deserved. But I guess they don't need the business, so they think they don't have to treat their customers with respect.

Despite my clear instructions, they were hemmed too short. I asked for 30" and they were hemmed to 29.25" (this was the original measurement they had taken, I requested it to be changed and made sure they confirmed). It's also worth noting that one of the back belt loops was already coming undone when I picked them up for the first time, and they did not tighten the buttons like I had requested (and again, I had made them confirm they would do this). The owner was rather adamant about my being in the wrong. Apparently they measure differently than everyone else, because he had to stretch the pants and measure from the full crotch seam (instead of under). Even then, he was still a 1/8" shy of 30. I included a picture from another local tailor with the proper measurements. I forgot to mention, the first time I came back with the pants, he measured 29.5", now it is 30??? He looked at me incredulously and asked if I was really making such a big deal over 1/8". He also said that the length looks fine on me. I honestly couldn't believe it, I asked for a specific length and they did not deliver. It's like a barber cutting your hair too short and telling you it still looks good, except pants don't grow back. I had also brought a pair of denim that had been hemmed by a local store that they do a lot of work for. Somehow he measured them identical in inseam length, getting them at 30" despite them being 30.5" (I have the work order to prove it). It seems to me he was manipulating the measurements to hide the mistake. I was not offered any refund, and had to settle for them letting out the pants more (this will result in a crease on my $400 pants). Even if he was not, he was incredibly passive aggressive and borderline disrespectful (angrily folding up both my pants and slamming them on the counter). This seems to be in line with some other reviews I've read. I wish I had seen those before I committed such a large amount of money. 3 separate issues and rude service when I confronted them about it. This is my first ever yelp review, I have never had such a disrespectful and poor experience that I felt the need to leave one. I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere.

As luck would have it, I stumbled across this shop walking past it on Grand Ave. And saw that they did tailoring, as well as make clothes. I noticed that the stitching and cuts of their hand-made clothes were impeccable. I followed up with lookng at their Yelp reviews. This is a great tailor shop - the staff is very pleasant, thorough, and does exceptional work (delivered in a timely manner). MY dress had to be taken in at the sleeves and hemmed. The work was stellar and a perfect fit. I am so glad (and relieved) to have found 8 am Tailor - and would have no hesitation of bringing my clothes to them, whether they were dresses from J. Crew (which this one was) or my Neiman Marcus outfits which might need altering. Prices are VERY REASONABLE. Their "consistent" 5 star ratings are well-deserved.

I spent the evening researching places where I could get my costume altered the next day, the day before Halloween, and decided on Piedmont Alterations. I lived nearby, so I took the 20 minutes walk down to explore Piedmont Ave and to hop down to Piedmont Alterations. It's a teeny little shop that I nearly missed... I'd thought it was a support for the much larger building behind/above it! Turns out that it's Ashley's store, and she does all her magic in this little space! I don't know how she does it, but she does. In the shop, she has made room for a rack of clothing she's working on, her counter and sewing machine/tools, and a privacy curtain for customers to check out her work. I popped in and was introduced to the owner herself. Ashley was busy with other a few other customers' projects, and furthermore she would have to leave a little bit early that day to attend a Halloween party... but she had me try on the costume, put a few pins in it to mark the adjustments she would be making, and then told me that she would be able to do it! I would be able to pick it up within 1-2 hours. It was a very reasonable price for a rush job: I believe $30 or somewhere in that range? The costume ended having no problems at all. I'm very glad I went to Ashley. If I hadn't, I would've worn a pretty baggy costume around! I'm amazed that Ashley was able to take the rush job on the day of and deliver so wonderfully. I would recommend anyone who needs alteration work done to go to Ashley. She is such a wonderful and pleasant woman as well. She has been in the area for years and years, and I imagine that she is humble and hard-working as ever. I took it to her and asked if she could make it bigger (I wasn't hopeful since my alterations budget was $500 and there was so much beadwork). Since I was working with her from out of town, I scheduled my appointments 3 months prior to my wedding date and ultimately met with Thuy 4 times before my wedding date. She did a beautiful job with all the garments. I requested a hidden bustle on my dress which turned out exactly as I envisioned. I was especially impressed with how Thuy used scraps of lace from other alterations to almost exactly match the lace from the veil to hide some small snags. She mended the veil overnight and it looked beautiful. Overall the total cost was less than $1k for everything mentioned above and she didn't charge extra for her work on the veil. I highly recommend working with Thuy for alterations if you're in the East Bay!

Le is so sweet and works super fast. She turned my blobby dress into one that makes me feel so confident. I am so glad that it is so close to me and working with her on what I wanted it to look like and how much to take in was a very easy process. You are either allowed to pay for it when you drop it off or when you pick it up. I opted for paying for it when I dropped it off because I knew that in the past, it was always very professional and the work was top-tier quality. Even though they are super busy during this prom and wedding season, my dress was ready for me within a week. I call that amazing! Can't wait to bring more things here in the future.
