Wow, great lunch special and one of the best mapo tofu plates I've ever had!!!!!!! Silken tofu cut perfectly, with some mala, a bit of tang, deliciousness and addictive numbingness in each bite. The perfect garlicky sauce, and such a generous portion for a lunch special. Their chicken and corn egg drop soup was delightful as well. It was piping hot, comforting, perfectly done. Their restaurant is impeccably clean and their sauce and seasonings come out per table, so those are spotless as well. I very much appreciate their detail here and their utensils were also spotless. It's so comforting to come here during a quick lunch for a fast and easy service, with a lovely lady up front offering exceptional kindness and hospitality. My food came out so quick! Having lived in Beijing and eaten Uyghur-style food out in the streets and in established restaurants as I traveled around, I was unbelievably excited to find this restaurant near home. However, it left me wanting more. I do wonder about the plethora of high reviews, because from my standpoint of having had a lot of Uyghur-style food abroad and my husband who had never had any, this place disappointed in taste. Ambiance (3/5): It was large, brightly lit and clean, but being so empty, it felt kind of sterile in there due to the lack of air flow and a TV blaring Spanish infomercials. I think it would add to the mood if they played some light instrumental music. Service (3/5): There was one waitress the whole time we were there and other than taking our order, she didn't come by much. I had to go to her twice to ask for things, including asking about rice. It was weird that she let us order without letting us know that we had to order rice separately. Yes...unlike most Chinese restaurants that automatically serve complimentary rice with main course dishes, you have to order rice and it's charged per bowl. Yikes. Food (3/5): We ordered the spicy Sichuanese boiled fish, lamb skewers and popcorn chicken. Admittedly, the fish and chicken dish aren't very Uyghur, and for that, it's our fault. However, the fish just was not close to anything I've had elsewhere, and not in a good way. It wasn't that spicy and it didn't have that signature mala kick. It was also salty. This was probably the most disappointing. The popcorn chicken was called something else on the menu, but it was essentially a big order of what you'd get at a Taiwanese boba shop. My kids loved it but I questioned why we ordered boba shop food on a dish. If anything were to right the wrongs, I expected the lamb skewers to be perfect at the price for four and it being a major Uyghur specialty. While the smell of the spices was accurate, the chunks of lamb were dry and tough that even my husband who had zero expectations mentioned what I noticed. I'm giving this place 3 stars for it being a unique restaurant that tries, but at the price point and quality of food, we both didn't feel that it would be a place we would visit again. The empty restaurant during peak dinner hours might have been a hint. But if you have restrictions such as needing to eat Halal food, then this restaurant offers some different dishes, so that may be its huge plus. read more

I placed my order over the phone for an early dinner pick up and they had my order ready by the time I arrived. We were delighted to find this Chinese Islamic or Uyghur place, and had an excellent experience. If you are interested in trying out something slightly adventurous or if you love lamb, this is the place to go. We dined in and brought a couple of items to go, and everything was delicious. What we enjoyed the most was the Lamb clay pot with pickled Napa cabbage, that used to our family's favorite but fewer and fewer place serves them in LA, we are happy to find them, and it was excellent. Tip: We asked them why they don't serve the soup with rice noodles like others, they said they could do to us (by request), they don't do it because the soup gets sucked dry quickly. Great Halal Chinese food with lots of Uyghur dishes like laghman and cumin lamb! We ordered the chow mein and green beans for kiddos (so kid friendly!) and the hot pepper beef, shrimp fried rice, general tso chicken, and hot pepper beef. Everything tasted so authentic and fresh but our favorites were the general tso chicken and shrimp fried rice. The general tso was so crispy and paired with such a good hot and spicy sauce. The fried rice was packed with egg and vegetables with such plump and large shrimp! Th laghman hand pulled noodles were such a nice texture and the broth made it such a comforting dish. The pepper beef was spicy but now too spicy at all, more so flavored with the bell peppers which gives it a unique flavor. The fact that it's fully halal and has a prayer area in a separate clean room is such a plus too. read more

From the moment you walk in, there's a special atmosphere -- cozy and beautiful. Everything feels very balanced and welcoming. It's the month of Ramadan and during iftar time there is only one lady running around everywhere. There is no one at the register and she is struggling by herself. There is one man probably the Manager or the standing right in front of the entrance of the kitchen doing nothing. The server didn't even ask for the drink. Just horrible service. We tried this place on the recommendation of a family friend and it did not disappoint. The quantity received for prices was perfect. The wait time was average and the customer service was normal. The only thing I would say I did not like was the shrimp. It had a strong smell to it which made it harder to swallow for me. Both the beef and chicken dishes ordered had a good flavor to them and were cooked amd bought out at the right temperature. Omar's Kitchen is one of the few Uyghur restaurants in L.A. It is the ethnic Muslims from the northwest province of China and more characteristic to Turkey. The food is halah and is a cross between Turkish and Chinese cuisine. Lamb is a staple protein of Uyghur cuisine. We had the traditional Laghman which is their hand pulled noodles with stir fried lamb & vegetables which was absolutely delicious. Their cumin lamb has a slightly different flavor profile that you would normally have at a Sichuan restaurant, but equally good. We also had more traditional Chinese dishes like salt and pepper fish and shrimp with vegetable, but also cooked and served with a little bit of a twist from the Turkish influence. All their dishes overall were very good and tasty. Service which were essentially the owners was good. Prices are reasonable. The ambience and decorations around the restaurant were colorful and informative of the Uyghur culture. For those that enjoy Chinese food, Omar's Kitchen should definitely be on your restaurant list! read more

We ordered the Hand Pulled Noodles, the Sweet and Sour Soup, and the General Tso 's Chicken. The small sweet and sour soup is enough for about 4 people and is filled with flavor and slightly spicy. General Tso's Chicken has hearty pieces of chicken and the Hand Pulled Noodles are a must order. I checked in which offered a free soda or tea, but was told that offer is no longer available. Uyghur cuisine is from China but it's closer to Central Asian dishes than it is to various Chinese cuisines. This place changed its name but the chef is still Omar who is gifted. He can make any dish be just perfect. I have had this kind of food around the country but this place is the best example of Halal Uyghur cuisine. read more

I had driven by the sign for Omar's Kitchen so many times on the way to/from 99 Ranch to buy groceries, so decided to finally check it out for dinner when my mom was visiting. It's not hard to find parking in the plaza's lot. The interior is beautifully decorated with lots of Uyghur items (hats, paintings, instruments, etc.) as well as Islamic architecture. The menu was smaller than I expected, with no dedicated vegetable section that I expect in most Chinese restaurants (though given the climate of the Xinjiang region, maybe their cuisine is not veggie-heavy). In addition, it was disappointing that they didn't have any yogurt or desserts, that the Yelp check-in offer is no longer valid [the owner didn't know how to remove it], and that there were no dumplings or 餅 on the menu as pictured in some older photos. The food is also a bit pricey, though the portion sizes are decent. As others have mentioned, food is made to order, so there may be somewhat of a wait. Service was a bit slow too, since there were no servers other than the owner couple. Everything was very tasty, albeit a bit on the saltier side. We ordered Beef and [King Oyster] Mushroom, the Uyghur Chow Mein (Flat Noodle), and Dry Garlic Fish. The fish filets were fried to a nice crisp and accompanied with flavorful dried garlic. The husband of the husband and wife owner couple came to chat with us at the end of our meal, in Mandarin. We had a fascinating conversation and he told us a lot about the Xinjiang region and the Uyghur people. Under the new ownership, the Mongolian beef was still really good, but the green onion pancake isn't as good and flavorful. I tried a different noodle than I've gotten in the past, so I can't really compare, but it was decent. My friends and I stayed a really long time, but the servers were really patient and accommodating. They were so generous to even give us a free desert (ice cream and persimmons). I think I liked the ambience under the old ownership better though - something about the seating arrangement, decor, or lighting felt more cozy - not sure what it was. read more
