This is a great place for a meal before or after going to the beach! Came here for lunch before heading to Rockaway beach and got fish tacos, black bean cheese and plantain tacos, and chips and guac. The chips and guac are great. The chips weren't stale at all and the guac is really fresh and nice portion size. I love plantains so I was excited for the black bean, cheese and plantain tacos but was soo disappointed. I was excited to see a nice portion of plantains on the taco but when I bit into it, it had a slightly chalky texture , a bit too firm, and not sweet enough but rather a little bitter. This made me think maybe the plantain wasn't ripe enough so this affected the overall execution. I've had fried plantains lots of times at other places and they're always crispy, soft and sweet so this was a huge letdown. I didn't end up finishing the taco or plantains. To end on a much better note, the fish tacos were REALLY good. The fish is big, fried perfectly without feeling super oily. The slaw adds a nice refreshing crunch and I love the sauces and guac added. It's a great mixture of flavors and probably the best fish tacos I've ever had. I will definitely be getting these and the chips and guac next time I'm going to the beach!
What an amazing hidden gem! My husband said he use to come here when he was younger and honestly, my expectations were low. Little did I know I'd have the BEST fish taco I've ever had in my life. The perfectly fried fish was so flakey and the batter was nice a crispy without feeling oily. The slaw and guacamole gave it a nice balance. All the hot sauces were also crazy good. Even the chips they serve in a zipped baggy were so addicting and just the right amount of crunchiness. The vibes were very laid back surfer. They had self serve water and sauce. I loved everything about this place and will def trek back for these tacos.
The ambiance is chill and poppy! Def screams beach town!!! I don't know anywhere else to eat in Rockaway other than Tacoway. Even the name is catchy! Honestly, all their tacos are good. Especially the fish tacos! They have always been my favorite and are super consistent too! Don't forget to get their elotes and drinks too!
Came by for the 4th of July, had a blast. Highly recommend. Went to Rockaway Beach for some fun in the sun and a dip in the water, and progressively worked up an appetite - luckily we ended up leaving the beach for lunch at Tacoway (places on the boardwalk had fairly huge lines, even closer to 3:00 pm). Walked for about 15 minutes and came here based on all the good reviews - they have this cute inner yard, sandwiched between the Taco joint and the next-door bar (Rockaway Beach Surf Club) - where you can order your food and grab a seat on one of the benches. No idea how bad the wait or lines would've been if we'd gone during prime lunch hours, but we got here around 3 - 3:30 pm and found seats. Got two of their orders of battered Fish tacos, chips and guac, and some elote - all of which ended up costing around $50-$60 or so (tip included). So the only downside is that it's a tad pricey but not horribly so (a lunch for two anywhere near NYC that costs around $25-$30 pp isn't bad). Anyways, the tacos themselves were really solid. The fish itself was nice, but the portions were large and the dressing (guac, lettuce, lime etc.) was excellent. Very tasty and filling food. The chips and guac were similarly awesome, clearly all home-made. Ordered a couple of drinks from the bar next door and enjoyed a very nice Independence Day meal, without feeling too crowded or overcharged. I'd happily go again, wish this place was closer to where I live honestly.
Very hipster but a fun experience after hanging out at the beach. The tacos were flavorful and I laso liked the frozen piña coladas from the bar next door. Definitely a must-visit at Rockaway. Service is fast and friendly and I recommend ordering in person versus using the phone app.

Although the moody QR Code ordering system may be the answer to a question nobody asked, the tacos and the setting are first rate. Fried fish tacos have returned, with brilliantly calculated ratio of fish, batter and sauce. Tacos are in orders of two, and I needed a side to bump this up to meal status from a snack. Elote looked good but lots of places do elote so I went for the Tacoway-specific cukes appetizer. It's the perfect summer item. No disrespect to jicama, but the revamped jicama-less version works wonders with the namesake vegetable and mango. I'm not a decor guy but Tacoway Beach has an excellent sense of place, from the plants to the stickers to the occasional A trains overhead. While many patrons are no doubt pairing their tacos with iPAs and whatever the kids are into these days, the straightedge crowd isn't shut of the beverage fun, thanks to the pineapple mint drink.

I've been coming here once every summer for 4 years now and it's changed quite a bit but the tacos are just getting better and better. This is a staple to go to in the rockaways and it's been getting more popular and they've added more tacos and more appetizers over the years and now they even have a doorman! It's so busy that they can't just let anyone go in anymore but that's fine because in the past it used to be so filled with people it was almost excruciating to be in. But they fixed all of that and it's pretty nice! It's still super sunny so remember your hat and sunglasses. The shaded tables are hard to get. The tacos were amazing and I impressed 8 of my friends when I brought them here. My favorites are still the crispy fish and their pork tacos and the pork ones are just so juicy. The guac and chips taste so fresh and soooo good. After the beach some of my friends came back for another bite! This place always have room in my ocean heart! It just keeps getting better!
The surrounding area looks a little empty but when you walk in, it is a bright outdoor seating area that looks great! You order the food through your phone and pick it up at the window. The food came out pretty quickly for us. The fish tacos were a good amount of savory and I enjoyed it! The special pork tacos were my favorite, very tender and flavorful. The guac flavor was a little but too light for me but the chips were crispy and good. Overall a pretty good spot to stop by if you're relaxing at the beach!
Tacoway is the perfect place to end a beach day! The surfing decor is so fun and you definitely won't feel as though you're still in NYC. Such a fun vibe!! The wait for tacos was over an hour when we went so we only got drinks. The piña colada was the best I've had in a really long time! The bar is cash only though (they do have an ATM). Will definitely be back this summer to try the tacos!!

This is my favorite spot in Rockaway and arguably has the best fish tacos in NYC, coming from a California boy. Large portions, great pricing, and delicious fried fish with delicious hot sauce options. Also try the cukes. They come with mango as well as cucumbers and it's amazing. The vibe is also great with outdoor benches, good music, and delicious drinks. Service is fast and friendly as well, just make sure you're paying attention for when your name is called! read more

Been consistently coming to Tacoway Beach every time I come to Rockaway Beach and it never disappoints! Lots of seating, great food at great prices. My favorites are the fish tacos and chips and guac! read more

Stellar taco shack vibe a little bit off the beach. Food was fire, got the chorizo taco and they put so much in these its beautiful. Guac here is insanely creamy and so vibrant lol idk it was really nice to look at. Pineapple Mint Juice was awesome, also creamy but in a refreshing way. read more

I love this place! Especially after a surfing session. There's non alcoholic refreshing juices and great food to fill you up. Don't worry there's a full bar as well in the building next door (CASH only) which has a connecting door from the inside. You can either order with a QR code from your phone or get in line and order from the cashier. Then grab a picnic table in their surfshack-like space. There's lots of tables but if those are full, you can head inside the bar. Fish tacos are very popular. I am not crazy about them bc they're deep fried but they're still tasty. There's a salsa station with three sauce options which I was smothering my tacos in. The ELOTE is Amazing! The sauce it everything. I watched a guy across from me pick up every last bit of it with his fingers lol! I can confirm it's fingerlicking good. And the pineapple mint drink hit the spot! I was debating between that and watermelon juice. So many options not enough stomach space. read more

I was so excited when I saw vegan mushroom tacos, got them to-go. Even more excited when I opened the box and saw the size! The first bite was very disappointing. The mushroom had such a weird flavor I can't event describe it. Won't be having it again and would advise against, spend money at a fully vegan restaurant instead, you're in New York City! This will be a frequent place to visit anytime I come surfing from now on. I got two tacos for $11. The chorizo was super good. I loved the sauce and juice. The fish was also good but I liked the chorizo better. So many toppings. It's a thick taco. Great Guac. We had chips too and they were really well seasoned. Such a great vibe here. Played Chris brown music which I loved. Cool surf venue next door that they were prepping for an event. read more

Unique outdoor taco spot with a nice vibe and great fish tacos. It's a little off the beaten path if you're at the beach, but worth the walk. Staff is super friendly and welcoming, which always makes the food taste even better. There's an adjacent indoor bar, too. Surf memorabilia and kitschy decorations abound, along with picnic tables and overhead string lights. It's like sitting in your friends' back yard, with a food truck nearby. read more

TLDR: Get the fish tacos, expect to wait. I came here under recommendation from one of my friends after visiting Rockaway Beach. The manager was friendly and helped us figure out the ordering system. After reviewing the menu I figured this was going to be another "white people Mexican" place. I ordered the fish tacos and the elote. After picking up my food I was thoroughly surprised and impressed. The fish tacos were some of the best I've had. They were flavorful and the fish practically melted in your mouth. For two tacos the portion size was great and the elote wasn't bad either. You get your bang for your buck. While the food was great, the service could've been better. The wait was a bit long and seating was limited. Also, you could only order online or with cash, so if you have no cell service you're screwed. Also, someone previously mentioned the nightlife was pretty sketchy, but I went during the day, so I can't speak on that. I give it an 8.75 out of 10 and would recommend (during daylight) read more

Don't know why it says it is closed, it is open. I ordered the fish tacos, chips, and the cucumber salad. Everything was delicious and excellent. My favorite was the tacos which were topped with onions, guacamole, coleslaw, and cilantro. They were by far the best! Drinks were strong which was nice read more
Enjoy some of that SoCal vibe without leaving NYC! The walk from the beach (102st) was a good 20 mins but don't be discouraged. We were very glad that we had the fish tacos here as opposed to eating from the vendors on the boardwalk (of course there is nothing wrong with dinning at the boardwalk). I had the fish taco and it was super delicious. I also got the elote (Mexican corn) afterwards (you can get it at the express booth). The place has outdoor seating and shared the indoor space with the bar next door. It is a good place to hang out before, during, or after your beach trip. read more

I went during prime time on a beautiful Saturday evening and the place was absolutely packed. The cacophony was in stark contrast to the tranquil day I had laying on the beach and the long line to get tacos snaking through the restaurant made me want to immediately turn back toward the beach, but my friends insisted we stay. I'm glad we did. The line moved relatively quickly and the tacos were tasty enough to make it worth it. We shared the papa con chorizo, fish, and black bean, cheese & sweet plaintain tacos. The fish taco was nicely battered and tasted so good with the aioli that came on top. The sweet plaintain taco was a nice way to finish the meal. My friends enjoyed the elote and plaintain chips they had. We found a little corner table and was able to create our own little taco utopia away from the rambunctious crowds. I can imagine it being even more pleasant on a chill weeknight. Glad this place exists. read more

Overall, Tacoway Beach has impressive tacos and a great atmosphere but very underwhelming service. The spot is decorated like your typical beach bar, leaving you feeling as if you've teleported to Florida. The bar is half indoor and half outdoor with plenty of seating and standing room if you just want to chill. The tacos were AMAZING. Never would I ever have thought to put black beans and maduros in a taco together but it was life changing. Adding the guac and salsa verde on top made them *chefs kiss*. Please do try. The service on the other hand was not so amazing. My friend and I had to wait over an hour for our order of tacos. The bartenders kept forgetting parts of our drink order. It was all just annoying really. Although waiting sucked, I would come back for those tacos and make sure I planned to wait forever before getting them. read more
Cash only. The tacos are sold in the back. Watermelon drink was refreshing and unsweetened. There were only 3 taco options and I went all in on the fish tacos. Plenty of seating in the back, but it was packed to the gills on a summer weekend. Love the atmosphere here as plenty of beachgoers trying to rehydrate and refuel. This little taco stand is like transporting you to a beach town somewhere in Florida. The ambiance and setup is very well themed without feeling tacky, which is hard to pull off. We just ordered 4 fish tacos, but wow were they good. The addition of a generous dollop of tasty guac was a great touch and made the $5 per taco price worth it. Price is a bit steep and higher than the $3.50 I saw on Yelp, but it was worth it for the quality. I'd very likely return next time I am in Rockaway Beach read more

It's a great restaurant for vibes and honestly white people. The pork tacos was very oily and the fish tacos had way to much toppings. The fish portion was solid but they just put loads of toppings and guacamole. One thing though was that their fruit drinks were amazing. It was also nice that they have a water fountain for your bottles to fill up. I believe the place is worth it if they lowered the amount of toppings and then the price for the tacos would be worth it. I think the price is way expensive. I know a place for $3 but then again the ambience is its selling point. read more
