Folks, prepare yourselves for the best dang birria you've ever had! However, note that it comes with a small side of chaos! In the context of a mom-&-pop shop like this, it is charming and not annoying. I ordered the birria ramen with the quesabirria upgrade. I wasn't brave enough to go for the spicy variant, for I wasn't ready for the possibility of having my posterior handed to me. Having "real" ramen noodles, whatever that means, is something I will leave to Japanese places. Noodles from the familiar bricks at the grocer's are understandable and instantly forgivable - I'd be surprised if they were "real"! Noodles aside, the ramen had a rich, savory broth. In addition, there was a healthy serving of tender pulled meat that had the flavors of the ramen turned up to 11! Who needs ramen when you have MEAT! Finally, I appreciate the onion and cilantro served on the side as the vegetable element, as well as a Tapatío Soup Base on the side (though, why mess with perfection?) Then we come to the quesabirria. As much as I enjoyed the ramen, this is 100% what I am ordering next time. A tortilla grilled crispy without becoming a tortilla chip, the perfect amount of cheese, and the same meat born in a kitchen of the gods! Everything was in perfect balance and harmony; and yes, I dipped it into the ramen. Speaking of tortillas, there are fresh fried tortilla chips provided at the start of the meal with three salsas! These aren't your jarred ones either! While the ones in squeeze bottles were on the simpler side, they were distinct. The favorite goes to the one in the ramekin! They aren't shy about refilling the chips when they run out either! My only comment is that the chips aren't salted. However! There is salt at the table, and this does help people adjust salt to their liking and prevents sogginess. While not greasy, there was enough oil to help the salt adhere. In terms of their service, some things were great, and other things were a little chaotic. The service was quick to bring out and refill chips as well as take my order. On the flip side, an empty water glass wasn't noticed, the Agua Fresca wasn't brought until much later with the meal, and the ramen took longer than I'd've expected. Entering the restaurant, there was also some confusion about the process, as I was quietly seated at the counter, but this was apparently a waiting area to be added to the wait list? Just a little chaos adding to the charm, nothing to worry about. Another indication of chaos? There is a sign asking for toilet paper not to be thrown into the toilet, and thrown into the trash can... it wasn't April 1st either. Thankfully, no foul smells. About that Agua Fresca... it was refreshing and not too sweet, and not 80% ice as so many places do with cold beverages. Enjoyable lightly sweet and acidic rim, too! What guarantees a return visit? The value! Not only were the prices reasonable on their own, the portions were large even for a voracious eater like myself, taking some home for the next day. Final verdict: a quintessential family-owned restaurant that makes incredible birria at prices that'll have you thinking you'd just time traveled. Ordered for my family today. I spent $80 and no salsa in sight. Why wouldn't they put salsa in the bag? Crazy part is that this isn't the first time they've forgotten to add salsa or have even shorted me. I went back inside to ask for some. For reference, I ordered 4 tacos (2 each person) and two dinners. That's a family of 4. We all enjoy salsa on our food. They offered to give me two Salsas....Christ on a cracker!! The birria torta was SO good, especially with the consume. It's pretty heavy and can be split between two people. We also got the birria mac n cheese, which was in collaboration with Luella's Southern Kitchen. It was yummy, but a bit overwhelming with the cheese. The bread crumbs on top gave it some texture/crunch which was nice. I got a strawberry horchata to drink - it was okay, but I didn't taste any horchata, so would opt for a regular horchata. Food was overall a great experience - highly recommend. The staff were kind and accommodating. But I docked a star only because there was uncertainty about the birria mac n cheese collab, even after asking two employees. There was also a minor tech issue where the payment screen froze. The food here is amazing. Some of the best Mexican food I have had in Chicago. Great serving sizes too. We had the seasonal torta that was shaped like a gingerbread man. 10/10 presentation and it tasted delicious. A little pricey but worth it. The quessabarria tacos are also delicious. Carne asada fries were some of the best I had ever had. The fries were crispy and the cheese and guacamole were plentiful. Service was also great. Our food took a bit of time to come out but they were very busy with diners and to go orders. Our server was very nice, checked on us frequently and came right away when we were done eating. Even offered to bag our food for us. The restaurant is very cute with some nice paintings and art. It is pretty small though so not a lot of tables, free chips and salsa were a plus. Stopped in before a comedy show because our friend wanted the gingerbread torta. It was so cute we felt obligated to get it! The bread was beautiful but overall it definitely did not have a lot of meat on it to be $25. We waited an hour for to go, but it was a pretty busy night. We got the birria tacos as well which had yummy crispy tortillas but the flavors of the meat weren't like the birria we had the weekend before. The consommé made up for it. We decided to go try out Tacotlán after seeing it all over TikTok! The inside is busy, but we were sat immediately. They have an extensive birria menu that I think is the main reason for all of the hype! The birria ramen was huge! The food came out piping hot and was delicious. I enjoyed the consomme which comes in a tall Styrofoam cup. FYI, Their Mexican style cooking is from the region Northwest of Mexico City. Taste of Chicago super sample short review: I am grading on what I had, the sample provided...and what the vendor thought would be the catch/draw for their restaurant. This was easily the best food I had at the taste of Chicago. They could've had 200 vendors, and I still think Tacotlan would reign supreme. The birria taco that I had was sinful...just an oral experience. The flavors melted together like the cheese in the taco. They have Quesabirria Sampler with consommé(The dipping sauce) Birria Fries, Chorizo taco's, Al pastor, chicken, Chinese noodles w the dipping sauce and meat (Must try), burritos, tortas etc. All tacos come with onion and cilantro Extra toppings are $0.50 each: Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado, Sour Cream, Beans Make it a Dinner and add rice and beans for $3. Plus they have drinks to satisfy horchata coke & Mexican coke, Jarrito etc. Lastly they have an outdoor area that's pretty nice too. Do yourself a huge favor and check them out. While I do love the food, it would be wrong of me to not mention that I give the food a 5/5 and service a 2/5. The quesabirria and consome is phenomenal. However, when you first walk in, it's a bit chaotic since there's no place to actually wait to be seated (hard to wait inside if you uber and can't wait in your car). I understand that there's not much that can be done since space is limited. However, I would say training and being receptive to feedback can help a lot. Ive had instances where the aguas frescas taste too bitter or something is wrong with them and I haven't been allowed to switch them out. There are also instances of mix ups with our bill. With food there already being so pricey I would want to feel a greater emphasis on customer service. Overall, I do not get that vibe as I understand they are slammed and overwhelmed. That is management's job to navigate that part of the business though. Would only recommend for pickup! read more
