I'm puzzled to see this described as a food truck when it is actually a restaurant in the same location. The shop sign El Azteca is just as prominent as the beautifully painted food truck parked outside. We came in here to order only one thing - Tortas (Mexican sandwiches with beans, avocado, tomato, lettuce, lettuce) with our choices of chicken or steak fillings. At $10 each, it was one of the cheaper things on the menu; everything else except for the tacos seemed a bit expensive. The Torthas were quite filling though and so worth it. The avocado portions were generous, and each bite was wholesome. I absolutely loved the decor in this place, with painted chairs, masks and other decor of presumably Southern American origin. Thankfully the sweet lady behind the counter could understand English, it made it much easier to order dessert that was only listed on the wall as a poster. Fried Plantain - a little too soft for me as I'm used to crispy fried banana, but this is absolutely wonderful dipped in the included condensed milk. Nieve Frita (Fried Ice-cream) - it was this that blew me away. Look at the photo. Tell me that isn't the most gorgeous thing in the world. Whipped cream, chopped peanuts, and a light round of strawberry syrup and chocolate sauce over the fried ice-cream, all resting upon a frita 'plate' that soaks up the flavours and makes for the most heavenly bite. Everything was overall okay. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself was clean and nice. I ordered the steak burrito, and I have to admit that I really didn't like the meat inside. My husband felt exactly the same. It's ok, I guess. This afternoon I decided to take a walk during my lunch break and they had a food truck outside my building so I grabbed lunch on the way back in. The person who took my order was fine--quick, not rude. I ordered a burrito suizo and it was not my thing. And I'm sometimes so loves cheese! It's not their fault that it's not my favorite dish, but the chicken in it was kind of bland too. I will say this for them though--they fulfilled my order quickly, portions are humongous. Way more than I could eat, and I'm a girl who sometimes has an appetite. It didn't help that when he asked if I wanted it with "everything", that apparently meant a meal (so included beans and rice) and not everything as in everything on the burrito, as opposed to leaving out salsa or something. Yesterday I stopped by a food truck, El Azteca on Monroe at Michigan and used my debit card paying $15.60. I also paid $6.00 with cash for guacamole and chip. Everything was terrible, no taste at all. I was there around 3pmn while traveling to the children's hospital. I asked for chicken tacos but was told they didn't have anymore so I requested steak. The tacos have about a teaspoon of meat and it seemed to be thrown together. The guacamole was worst, no taste. This was the worst tacos and guacamole I ever had and I eat Mexican food all the time; Taqueria Los Comales, LaCantina Grill. Got some street tacos at this food truck with the fam (gen-z slang for family). My daughter accidentally forgot to ask for the spicy salsa on the side and started crying because her tongue was on fire. This isn't the first time this has happened, so I just sat there and let her learn her lesson on her own. She finally stopped crying after seven or eight minutes and then I assisted her with scraping off the spicy salsa off the tacos with the finely-crafted plastic cutlery El Azteca graciously provides. I think there is a lesson to be learned here. If you're going to succeed in life, learn from your mistakes the first time and remember to ask for the spicy salsa on the side. read more

Was hungry and did not want to have to wait for a table at a restaurant and saw a line of food trucks parked next to the Chicago Art Institute. Many people were getting food from El Azteca so I decided to order the 3 tacos plate. The food at El Azteca was some of the best Mexican I've had. Their salsa they bring out with the chips was deliciously fresh, and their dishes were extremely well made. My wife had chilaquiles and the egg had a yolk so orange you know it came from a really good poultry farm. For the price, I really don't think you can beat it! The ambiance is also very vibrant, exactly what you would hope for when having a meal out at a truest authentic Mexican cuisine. Worst burrito of my entire life. It might have actually ruined my life. The chicken had absolutely no flavor. I told the cashier "no avocado" (I'm allergic) and he said with a straight face: "We don't have avocado, just guacamole." I just blinked at him. I should have known then it was going to be a trash burrito. $13 for a pound of wet, tasteless shredded chicken and beans in a soggy tortilla. I'm not upset at the size of the burrito considering the price. I was excited to feel the heft of the bag when it was handed to me. You would be happy to get a burrito this size if it was actually decent. Atmosphere was ok. It's a food truck in Chicago; it was windy and I got mugged by a pigeon while I waited. I got my food to go and ate 1 taco in the car. The food was very fresh/ hot, but the tacos were missing something. They were bland to me. I only ate 1 of the 2 and gave the other 1 away. The carne asada burrito I got was one of the best burritos I've had in Chicago by far. Met a friend for Lunch here today and was glad I chose this spot. I do not come to this area often so I'm not familiar with the Mexican spots in this area. I ended up going with the Milanesa de Res Torta along with a Horchata. They both were solid lunch choices and both were fresh and tasty down to the bread used. My buddy went with a El Pastor Taco and a Carne Asada tostada both of which he enjoyed. I take his opinion seriously as he knows what's up with Mexican Food and will always diss tacos with lettuce and tomato. I appreciated the various salsas brought out with the chips. One less star for the chips. They reminded me of the circular chips you'd get at a movie theatre when you order nachos. Those are fine but do not belong at a Mexican joint. Ended up here because they were the only place open at 10:15 p.m. on Thursday night, my meetings ran late and I was so hangry! So surprised! The Tacos al Pastor were really delicious and well prepared. Tasty, fresh, topped with cilantro and onion on super fresh corn tortillas. The portion of meat was generous as well. The ONLY thing I might like would be a few bits of pineapple, otherwise, really good. Rice was also good, beans were okay, but I'm not much of a lover of beans to begin with. They were fresh, but needed some lard or bacon grease or something. The pico de gallo was really excellent. And, at 5.99 for two nicely filled tacos, rice and beans, well, ya can't beat it. I will say that I'm very peaky when it comes to food I will judge it in flavor cleanliness and service not so much the location cause sometimes holes in the walls are normally the best. That's a bold statement considering a couple other big names in the area (i.e., El G*rdo, El T*con*zo, and L'Patron). I celebrated Mother's Day with my two little boys and husband here, for dinner. I started with a tostada de ceviche--pescado & shrimp. It was everything I was looking for in a ceviche: limey, not so fishy, & a very generous serving, with avocado and a slice of orange, just yum! I also had a cóctel de camaron. Again, a generous serving garnished with cilantro & cebolla, avocado and an orange wedge. Two thumbs up on the seafood, y'all. My boys had a taco dinner--one taco and plenty of rice and beans. They love lengua so we went that route. Very soft and well cooked lengua, so they were very happy. My hubs tried the milanesa dinner; his dinner came with the usual side salad, rice beans, and also fries! He was happy fries with Mexican combo dinners always make him happy. I enjoyed my agua de tamarindo, súper fresh. I'll have everything again when I return. The hubs says he'll prob skip the milanesa dinner and try the ceviche because mine was bomb. Came here over the weekend with my boyfriend. We ordered take out. This is the first time I have been to this restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. The portions were huge. The chicken was nicely seasoned and the green salsa on the enchiladas was spicy but not overpowering. It came with rice, beans and a small lettuce tomato avocado salad. Overall great service and great food. Definitely one of the better Mexican restaurants in the area. I would definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant by accident. The best horchata I've ever had. 10/10 recommend.

I can't say enough nice things about this place! 1) It's super cute inside. You'll spend half of your first visit checking out the pretty chairs. (And the ceiling is very HGTV). 2) Service is always friendly and patient. There are very ritzy places downtown that should send their waitstaff here for lessons. 3) I saved the best for last! THE FOOD! Just for sitting down at dinnertime they will bring you chips with salsa and little cups of soup. After your scrumptious meal they usually bring you a small complimentary serving of flan. Delicious food. Tacos piled high with meat!! The seasoning is amazing in all dishes. Have tried the chicken tacos, steak tacos, grilled chicken breast and green enchiladas. They were all amazing and I left a happy customer. The staff is also super sweet and accommodating. They checked with us to make sure everything was good and when a friend called to say he was joining we put in his order since it was ready so quickly they came over and covered it in aluminum and kept it warm for him. This is a local place for me, within waking distance, I can only say good things about this place. So I usually come in and order small items, order of Guacamole & Torta(Spanish sandwich), as in most Hispanic restaurants Rice and Bean are a mainstay and sometimes after about 6 hours of having beans sitting under heat the Pinto beans get Caplet and dry. And sometimes there is an attempt to cover this up by adding lots and lots of cheese to the top. You won't find that here. The batches the cooks makes are rice and beans every 3 hrs in medium batches. during catering and lunch hours there are usually 3 cooks one is on prep the other on the grill & a floater between they run a nice tight kitchen back there. Overall most items on the menu a great. There specials are worth it. Rice is fresh and side dishes, also you get a complimentary soup to open the stomach juices going. for those looking for a good portion on there plate, this is the place to go, so if your looking for good Mexican this is the place to go read more

Very disappointing. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast and were greeted by friendly staff. We both ordered chilaquiles and realized right away that NONE of the food on our plate was fresh. Everything from the rice and beans to the eggs were dried out from being microwaved and reheated. While paying for our meal at the register we peaked inside the kitchen and noticed the chef reheating other full plates in the microwave. Very disappointing. read more

Yes it was packed and the shell stayed crispy. Chorizo (tacos, sopes, burrito and tostada)- the chorizo was not greasy, but tasty. It's not spicy at all. Great local place. After seeing this spot on my daily work route I decided to check it out. The decoration is colorful and traditional Mexican. The service was fast and very friendly. We ordered some pastor tacos, a torta and a sope all of which were tasteful and reasonably priced. A clean place was seen all throughout as well.
