03/21/26 - I was in Oak Park today. I stopped into Tacos El Tio on Lake street & grabbed 2 steak tacos on a double corn tortilla. I added some hot red sauce and viola. These tacos were one of the best steak tacos I've ever eaten. The quality of the steak was excellent as was the seasoning. I ate them standing up at a counter as I was in a rush. I went to Tacos EL Tio for the first time last weekend with a friend. The carne asada burritos and chips I did enjoy. And the waitress was helpful. What I did not like was random people coming off the street to solicit us for money, rude non customers coming from off the street to scream at the staff and people asking for free food. Today I Will Tell You About My Experience going to Tacos El Tio. So it was a nice mellow day and I was in the mood for some tacos, I decided hey! Let me try some steak Tacos Today. I remembered that me and a friend recently just came to grab some vegan tacos the other day and they were pretty good! And the customer service was fantastic ! I then walk in and walk up to the counter where it's visible seen that's the area to walk up to and speak with an agent , I than ask to order one steak taco! The lady tells me it's $6 bucks. In my head goes ( WoW $6 BucKS For A Taco... Whew ) I than remembered hmm ( Wasn't a Taco $4 dollar and some change the other day) I than remembered ( I have been going on a vegan diet with this Beautiful Lady I met from San Francisco ) I then say Hey! it's alright I'll just get a vegan taco. The lady still charged me $6 for the taco I didn't complain and when I go to sit down I asked the lady for a tray she says there's no more trays but it's guys sitting down with a tray and it's also a stack of trays on the other table. At the time that I'm writing this, Tacos El Tio has a 3 star rating and that seems fitting. The food is decent, but the prices are high and the service leaves a lot to be desired For my first visit I ordered the Taco Grande de Bistec, a large taco with steak. What I got was the large taco with chicken. When I asked if the order was correct I was told that "that is our steak". It looked like chicken and tasted like chicken. I said ok and ate it, it was fine for a chicken taco. The gaslighting got me. I loved the large corn tortilla and the salsa verde is fire. The server brought bowls of salsa before the entree, but no chips. Since it was my first time here, I didn't think much of it After that, a few items i've gotten for takeout were the burrito suizo, huaraches, gorditas, and quesobirria tacos. Food was always decent. The masa tortillas seem to be made in house and probably the one thing that really stands out to me here My most recent visit, a few months later, I decided to go back since it was late and I didn't want to drive anywhere. Again I ordered the Bistec grande taco. I actually wanted the dinner, but they were out of rice and /or beans. A little strange for a Mexican restaurant, but it was kinda late, so fine. This time, though, I actually got steak! The steak was pretty good, a little tough for my taste, but seasoned well. It was also cut into pretty large pieces so this is more of a fork meal than a handheld taco. I also asked for chips this visit and was told it was $4.50/basket. Horchata was decent, but at $6 for a small and $7 for a large with no refills and a lot of ice, I wasn't really feeling it This brings me to pricing. Considering the area and that they are open 24 hours it seems ok at first, but where they lose me is that almost everything else seems to be extra. Pickled carrots and peppers, $1. Extra limes, $2. The fact that they bring you a full bowl of salsa, but charge for chips is surreal to me The service ranges from good to mid depending on who you get. Honestly, if I were serving tables at 2 in the morning, I'd probably be dishing out huge scoops of attitude as well, so I can't really knock anyone for that. Some of the servers have no issue talking down about customers in Spanish right in front of them, but that seems risky in such a diverse city. Seriously, not like they stepped behind the counter or away from the table, switching to Spanish and trash talking without moving a step. I'm in no way fluent, but I grew up with people that spoke Spanish natively as well as many other languages, and the first thing I learned in every single one were the bad words and how to talk smack Will I go back? Sure. They're open all night and within walking distance for me. Other than the masa tortillas, nothing else that I've tried helps this place rise up over the hundreds of really good Mexican restaurants I've visited in the Chicago area. Considering Pilsen is a 15 minute drive from here, if I were to travel, that's where I would go A solid three stars for the food, but we're gonna drop one for the unadulterated gaslighting without the slightest hint of shame read more

I will preface by saying that the food is expensive at this location compared to other spots just like this. Though my food has always been delicious, both for dining in and take out. The flavors are authentic and fresh. My go-to is always the taco dinner (al pastor & asada) and a guava agua fresca. I would recommend you review your order before you leave if you are taking out because they tend to miss something or confuse orders. I am so glad this place is open 24 hours now. I didn't dine in El Tio but I ordered there at the restaurant for pick up and while I like the way the restaurant visually appeared they did end up getting my friends mom's order wrong and were pretty slow to fix it. Although the food was pretty decent and atmospherically it was sound. It was busy when I arrived but it seemed like there were already a handful of people seated and eating. Lastly our food took a while. This is a place I may recommend but it wouldn't be high on my personal list. read more

5 stars for Tacos El Tio #4 - I tried this Mexican Restaurant for the first time Saturday Night. It's a 24 hour restaurant with a large food and drink menu - inside is full of Mexican decor which looks really cool. For our drinks, we tried the Mango, Strawberry and Lime Margaritas - all were delicious but I think that the Mango is the best one for sure. We had to ask for chips and salsa and waters (they aren't given automatically) - so keep in mind if you want any of those. For dinner, I had the steak taco dinner which was great - steak was good quality. My friend had the brisket taco dinner which he really enjoyed and my brother liked the steak torta sandwich. If you're in the area (especially if you're up late) and are feeling Mexican food, I'd recommend trying Tacos El Tio #4. read more

I had a very disappointing experience here. I ordered a Jarritos drink that cost $7, and after deciding I didn't want it, I politely asked for a refund. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the server became rude and disrespectful. She told me, "then go to the store bitch ," which was unnecessary, especially after I had already spent money on food there. The situation escalated over a simple drink request, and I was even cursed at by the server. No customer should be treated that way. If you go to this restaurant after midnight- be weary of your waitresses' especially if her name is Blanca V. She added fraudulent items to our bill, such as alcoholic beverages and multiple high cost dinner dishes, and being that "after hours " you are required to pay for your meal at the same moment you order- we never did get the opportunity to ask for a receipt, nor was one offered at the end of our meal. This sheisty activity of course make the bill higher and of course benefits the waitress because they add an automatic 25% tip for groups of 6 or more. So not only did she get an automatic higher tip, we also left a cash tip. I waited over 30 minutes for a single cup of coffee. Service was bad. Food was "ok" Who knows how long this waitress has been doing this to other patrons that go dine in "late night" I highly doubt we're the first people she does this to. They did send a refund of $90, even though we asked for a full refund which was over $300 for a party of 7 that had a light dinner. You may think- why didn't you say something at the time of payment- we were with family and guests and did not want to have an awkward moment with the waitress. I really liked their burrito suizas . Adding melted cheese to anything makes everything better in my opinion, but definitely recommend ordering in versus taking to go when possible because they lather on more cheese and sauce when you're in the restaurant. They had good service. Was very confusing though because they bring out salsa and salsa Verde but they don't bring out chips. Why no chips? They should add chips to every table and that would make this from a four-star to 4.5 star. It could be a five star if only the prices were more reasonable. read more

Me and My Aunt stopped here before going to see The Color Purple at The Lake Theater. We opted for our deciosn to eat tacos. This place did not disappoint my taste buds. The service was excellent. Food: each got the three taco bundle with different protein, steak, al pastor, chicharron, brisket. The steak was by far the best one out of all the tacos, then came brisket, because both of the meats were tender, and a little better season. The Al pasted and the Chicharron were not so great as it was not seasoned well and it was overly sauced on. The chicharron was too fatty and slimy with the sauce being overly sour. All the tortillas were just kind of too soggy. The rice was decent, it was well salted and soft Service: we got takeout and delivery was through DoorDash. Went with a group of friends for their advertised "$5 margarita Thursdays" at around 11:15 pm. We order, and eat, and then our server brings us the check (after a long wait)... and we are being charged $11 for each margarita. We asked her why this was, and she claimed the $5 margs are only until 11pm... which is not mentioned anywhere on the sign, and wasn't brought up to us when we ordered. It was still Thursday. The chicken tacos was flavorful and good. but the service was uncomfortable. My brother, Best Friend and I went on my birthday 3/16/25. We came to dine in. They had us pay after placing our order. but it was a couple sitting down eating when we came in and when they got ready to leave they let them pay after eating. Two girls came to dine in and after they placed their order they didn't have them pay right after like they did us. My best friend ask the girls did they tell them to pay after they placed their order and they said no. they would pay after they get their food, eat and when they ready to leave. Overall it seems as if we was discriminated against because we was black and everyone else was Mexican. Also they tried to keep the change and never gave us a receipt. When my friend went up there to ask why did we have to pay before getting our food and everyone else didn't. The lady worker tried to smooth it over by saying due to recent dining and dashing that is they new policy. We didn't have a problem with that. The problem is if you're going to have customers pay after placing order instead of after they finish dining. Then it needs to be every customer not certain ones. read more

A little after 1 am this morning a friend and I were hungry after leaving the Madonna concert, so we decided to stop here and get some food to go. I've eaten here a number of times since they opened and I've liked the food and service so much, I've also have recommended it to others. Usually I would get tacos but this visit I wanted a torta. So we got a steak burrito and a chicken torta with extra chicken and no sour cream to go. Mind you, I've had many of these sandwiches before but from other places. So I was at least expecting something similar to the other tortas I've had at other places. What I received was a extremely soggy wet mess of a sandwich. The bread was so wet that it literally stuck to the wax paper that was covering it, plus although I requested extra chicken it was mostly lettuce and tomato. It also had very little chicken, beans and the other fixings at a cost of $9.99. I will definitely think twice about returning to Tacos El Tio # 4 or any of their other restaurants because I was very disappointed with my sandwich. After reading others reviews it appears that Tacos El Tio has never responded or even try to correct any of the reviewers bad experiences. This makes me question if they truly care what kind of an experience their customers have in there restaurants. They need to keep in mind that there's lots of other places that offer the same style of food and many cheaper with better flavors and quality. read more

I had a late lunch or early supper, and couldn't have been happier. I wish that I could give a shout out to the server by name, but it wouldn't really matter because all of the staff I observed and/or interacted with were quite cordial and professional and seemed to be working together like a well coordinated team. The environment was comfortable and pleasant, and would be a great place to bring friends or a date. When I entered, the server was with another customer and she acknowledged me with a look, and then excused herself to come and greet me. After I was seated and she finished with another customer, she asked if I wanted to order a drink and after I did, she offered more time to keep reading the menu. After I ordered, the food came faster than I expected and was presented on the plate to look really appetizing, with both green and red sauce condiments to the side. The burrito was nicely grilled, toasted, and cut in half. The rice was attractively shaped and when I stuck my fork in it, a whisp of steam rose into the air. Throughout the meal, the server was attentive without hovering. Once I noticed that she quickened her step coming to ask me how it was before I took the next bite. Another time, she slowed her pace to allow me time to finish and swallow the bite before she asked. The limón (lemon) smoothie de lech (with milk) was delicious! It was also well-sized to go with the meal. The ice wasn't crushed quite as finely as I expected for a smoothie, but I didn't encounter any pieces that didn't fit through the straw, and certainly nothing to complain about. Perhaps it was my expectation that was not realistic... or possibly just different. It was so good that I really wished that I'd had time to try another one of my favorite flavors. It would have been tough to choose which one. If you like Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine, I think that you'll be very happy with Tacos El Tio #4 like I was. read more

Not bad! I have a high bar for Mexican food and this was close to four star rating but it wasn't quite there. I am glad I tried it though. I was very apprehensive about finding authentic Mexican food on Lake street but it's the real deal! I got the taco dinner with carne asada, cilantro and onion. The tacos were plentiful. The meat wasn't fatty or greasy but I wish it was seasoned just a little more. All in all, I'd do it again. I liked the avocado salsa they came with it and they were generous with the lime. Rice was good. Cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The beans were good as a side and I'd be happy to have them again. But I've been searching for beans good enough for a bean and cheese burrito and these weren't quite there. My daughter got quesadilla with a floor tortilla (she's 2). It was an adult portion and I wish they had a smaller size. The tortilla was really good and the cheese was melted perfectly. I may get a burrito next time based on her quesadilla. My wife got a carne asada torta. She enjoyed it, she did need a little more meat which I shared (happily). Next time, she may try something else. We got chips and salsa but wouldn't do that again. Chips were store bought and the salsa felt like the last bit from the batch. It was a very thin consistency, needed salt, and didn't taste like much. Lastly, we got tamarindo but it wasn't fantastic. Stopped in for dinner with my husband and was so disappointed by the food. The restaurant is cute and the waitress was very nice and attentive but the food was no bueno. I had the taco dinner with steak tacos and I got tortillas filled with gummy fat and no actual steak. Also, my rice was microwaved and super dry and hard. My husband got the big taco and again super fatty meat. We ordered a handmade quesadilla and the tortilla (supposedly homemade) was old, hard, and filled with more butter than cheese. I know this isn't the best time to leave unfavorable reviews but inflation has hit us all and it's disappointing to be charged my meal considering I left all of it. Please save your time and money. Not only was the food dry, overpriced and cold but both of the only servers did and very poor job. Not once did our server check on us or attempted to ask if we needed anything else. The place was pretty empty and both of them were chatting while we were waiting to get the check. I attempted multiple times to waved them but they were too busy chatting with each other. I really hope that the restaurant sees this and corrects this issue because it was very unprofessional.
