For a small space, the flavors here are big. We've loved everything we've ordered here - tamales, quesabirria, enchiladas, horchata, guacamole. The staff is always friendly, service is quick, and portions are generous. We just tried their catering for the first time, too, and it was a hit at our party - with all ages! If you want good, affordable, no frills Mexican food then stop here! I was in the area viewing an apartment and I got hungry, this restaurant was in walking distance. It was a Saturday evening and not at all busy. You order at the counter and pay immediately, and dine in is available so I found a seat until they brought my food. I got the flaunta dinner and it came out FAST, hot and fresh. They brought out 2 bottles of salsa one red one green, I wish they would have given me chips. I wish I would have brought some of the green salsa home it was so so good. Excellent rice and beans, crispy flauntas and good guacamole, I cleaned my plate! The prices are extremely affordable and the restaurant was clean including the bathroom which was locked but they opened for me with no problem. Ample seating at Cactus Grill with counter ordering. If you dine in, your food will be brought to your table. It also seems like a great takeout place too as service seems to be fairly quick. We ordered a large guacamole. It was definitely a large. I felt like it was never ending (in a good way). I love a chunky guacamole where there's pieces of avocado in it. The chips didn't seem homemade and were on the salty side. I wondered if there was an even hotter sauce or salsa; I didn't ask. There were two salsas brought out to our table - one was green and one was red. Both were good and a bit spicy. The tacos were very sizable. They were $3.75 each. I thought the asada one was very good and came with the classic onions and cilantro. The fish taco was made with tilapia. I wasn't super fond of the chipotle sauce on it but it was still very tasty altogether. Definitely would come back! They had popsicles that I didn't get a chance to try. read more

Walking distance and never tried this place until now and I'm glad I finally dropped by! They said they revamped the menu so I included pictures of their current menu. The server was very friendly and patient as I stood there mulling over what I wanted to try. I ordered 4 different tacos: carnitas, asada, barbacoa and lengua all with the basic onions and cilantro. You can add additional toppings for 25c each (avocado is an option). They were individually wrapped and hefty with meat. All the flavors were great and the sauces paired well (green was spicy and red was smoky). Personally loved the lengua the most because the meat was so tender. The restaurant itself is clean with a simple layout and lively music and decor. The service was very quick. We ordered in person for takeout and got our order in about 5mins. The menu offers some good sit down meal options with sizzling plates. They also offer catering. And even a variety of fun desserts that I'm excited to try in the future. Always pass this place and never thought to order from them until we woke up hungover and in desperate need of a breakfast burrito at 12:30 pm. They don't have these on the website menu but we called and they very kindly said they could do it! Usually comes with chorizo, but I don't eat meat and so they did it without and then also added fries at my request - I lived in San Diego for years and have had a hard time finding anywhere that will do a "California style" burrito so I was very excited about that. The food is fair. Since it was taco Tuesday and I had a taste for some steak tacos and rice. I decided after I logged off from work. I would come and place an order. Nice location in a small strip mall not to far from the expressway. Nice clean space with a colorful decor. I ordered the steak taco with no beans but extra rice. The prices are pretty fair like most places. My food was hot and freshly cooked but there was no flavor to my food. I came home and had to add some flavor to it and it worked out fine. read more

Chips and salsa When I walked in the door the lady at the register who was very sweet, did warm me that the green and red salsa we're very hot today. Her exact words were hotter than usual. This did upset me a little bit only because I love my chips and salsa and I am always interested and experiencing other restaurants recipes. The green salsa was 100% unbearably spicy. I honestly could not enjoy the flavor because I was too busy sweating my face off. This pretty much told me that this restaurant as in consistencies. Meaning, next time that I come here my dish will tastes completely different from my last experience. I was not too fond of that so unfortunately this will be the only time I eat here. Chicken enchiladas The corn tortilla and cheese we're pretty standard as far as flavor goes. I was however quite surprised with how much chicken they packed inside the three enchiladas. Unfortunately, if I was going to compare my plate to homemade enchiladas then I would say just make this dish at home. It wasn't that it was bad, it just didn't have anything that grabbed my attention. This was a pretty generic enchilada experience. Rice and beans The rice was the only thing on my plate that stood out and separated this place from another. I felt that the rice was probably the second best sing on my plate. The beans tasted like something straight out of the can from your local grocery store. They did not have salt, lime or anyting to make these beans stand out. Bed of lettuce and sour cream Here is the kicker, the best thing on my plate I would have to say was the lettuce over the enchiladas. The lettuce was very crispy and tasted fresh how long will the sour cream. I really wish I could give this restaurant a better rating but unfortunately, my experience near was maybe half a star better than taco Bell. We went to this restaurant for first time last week. We liked it but called in our order this time. I paid for the meal with my debit credit card. They appropriately charged my card. I told her my H was coming to pick up the food. She didn't indicate any issues but just had to sign the receipt. Then I called back almost immediately and wanted to substitute for steak meat and there would be an additional charge. No problem! I told her my H would bring the cash. I even told her my H's name and again, she alerted me to absolutely no issues. When my H went to pick up the food, she told him we weren't allowed to make small orders over the phone and pay by credit card over the phone. Huh????? That makes absolutely zero sense. She said it was corporate policy not to take small orders over the phone and use credit card to pay over the phone bc of scams. Huh???? Most restaurants require you to pay for call-in orders before you hang-up to ensure they get paid in case you can't pick-up food. After leaving the restaurant, my H called and told me what happened. I called there and spoke with the same individual (Maria Rodriguez) who took my order and spoke to my H. She told me the same BS story. I asked her why didn't she tell me this either time when I spoke with her. She had no answer but she just kept repeating it was corporate policy and it was a courtesy for her to allow it once. Even if true, she should have said something during our two phone calls. I call 100% BS!!! I called her out on the her BS and the only thing I can surmise is bc my H is black and she didn't trust him. She told me I could bring back the food. I told her we will never come back again! Cactus Grill is one of my new favorite spots to grab Mexican food in my area! I got a chicken burrito dinner, and it was amazing! The chicken was marinated, seasoned, and so tender. The salsa they give was both flavorful and hot (I'd definitely recommend it for spice lovers). The rice was a little dry (I did go close to closing so I would give it another chance) but the refried beans were buttery and delicious. The staff was soooo nice and welcoming! The only thing that would have made this meal better is if the burrito was crunchy. All in all, I will definitely be returning. Give Cactus Grill a try as soon as possible! read more

Just when you least expect it you get blown away with hidden gem. I was in the Forest Park for a meeting and the meeting time got pushed back. I thought I would grab a fast bite. I found myself in this little Mexican place called Cactus Grill in this non-descript strip mall. Super clear with a authentic décor, I was greeted by the nicest young lady named Perala who asked me for my order. When at true Mexican taco place I always order a simple taco to see what they really have to offer. WOW this place is simply delicious. We ordered takeout around 7:30, they close at 9 so maybe that why - our food was the scraps of the day. My enchiladas looked nasty when I opened the container. There was barely any red sauce. The rice is bland. The steak and tortillas were soggy and too salty. The fries had a bitter aftertaste like they used old oil . I couldn't finish my food it was so nasty. read more

Hidden gem! They have great tacos with really succulent and flavorful meat. Very reasonably priced for the excellent quality of food they serve. The owners seem like they genuinely want you to enjoy your food and leave happy. Anecdote: I usually like adding really hot salsa to my tacos and chimichangas, and so I asked them if they had something with a zing. The lady who helps run the place said they unfortunately didn't have anything spicier than the salsa they give out with the chips (which was also pretty good, btw). The friendly decorations, the delicious house made salsas, and top notch table service made me feel nostalgic in a positive way! Between two people, we had the queso that came super hot and with four soft flour tortillas. With the complimentary chips, we had plenty of ways to get the cheese in. I've had the steak taco and the pork taco. Both were generously portioned for filling. We also got the giant quesadilla and we laughed at how monstrous it is. Came here as a spur of the moment date night and it exceeded expectations. The food is authentic and full of flavor! We enjoyed everything from the salsa to the rice. I would recommend the Fajitas and the flan for dessert. Portions are large which mean yummy leftovers. They are working on getting a card reader (i.e., they just opened last week) so my only regret is not being able to tip the manager/server more for her sweet and generous hospitality.
