During my road trip to Los Angeles I stopped in for lunch. Food is delicious, service is friendly, and the decor is very fun and festive! Angie said that 3 tacos would be filling and they were! The horchata is also delicious. I went to the bathroom and I didn't mention that I was coming back for my drink, and Angie accidentally through my horchata away. It was my fault for not mentioning that I was going to the restroom. I ordered one more horchata for the road because it was so delicious. Angie gave me a large, and then wouldn't let me pay for it. It was very nice, even though it was my fault for not mentioning I would be back for the drink. Chatting with Angie, eating delicous tacos, and drinking delicious horchata was a fun way to end my fun yet short time in Cedar City! La comida esta deliciosa y el servicio es muy amable. On one of our last evenings in Cedar City we stopped at Tacos el Jefe after a long day at Bryce Canyon. Our appetites were satisfied. Great local place for tacos and Mexican. Many choices and combos to choose from. I got 2 sopes, one with chorizo and one with lengua. Both were delicious. The sopes were crispy and filled with toppings. The lengua very tender and seasoned well. The chorizo had a nice kick of flavor. They were good size and 2 was enough. Rest of family had chimichangas. They were huge and fried up perfectly. They were stuffed with meat and had a nice amount of guacamole and sour cream. Definitely get your money worth on these. There is a salsa bar with some different salsa to try and some pickled veggies. Nice touch. The green salsa was excellent. We really enjoyed Tacos el Jefe. If we are in Cedar City again we will definitely stop by for some good Mexican food. read more

I've been looking for over five years for a Mexican restaurant to give my love to. I've tried them from Toquerville to St. George and now Cedar city. Cedar city very seriously has the very best Mexican food. From my first bite, I knew I had found THE best Mexican food. Very seriously, I would drive from St. George just to have food from Tacos, El jefe. Beyond reasonably priced, excellent food - served piping hot- quickly I could not have been more impressed. After a long day of snowboarding, we were in the mood for something filling and flavorful. They have lots of options, and on the weekends they offer al pastor! I got the al pastor fries, and my partner got mini tacos with lengua, adobada, and carnitas. My friends got carnitas plate, menudo, and more. Our order should show you how much variety they have. You order at the desk and they give you a buzzer once your meal is ready. I love that all the sauces, grilled peppers, and grilled onions were self serve so you could try everything if you want. Everyone loved the grilled onions, and those grilled peppers are definitely spicy. The al pastor fries had so much meat and toppings. I was so grateful it wasn't just fries and cheese. The meat was tender and packed with flavor. The carnitas tacos were the best out of the lengua, carnitas, and adobada. The menudo was pretty gamey if you like that taste. Chill, casual place with a foosball table. The food was good, especially considering the price, and I loved how you can get pickled carrots and radishes at their salsa bar. Gotta say they hooked it up especially considering it was past peak hours at 10pm when we arrived for dinner. I consider myself a bit of a foodie, coming from California and regularly eating Mexican food there. And I have to say, this place actually manages to beat California's Mexican food on value and quality in a couple of areas. I ordered the pozole (a Mexican based soup with cooked maize, aka South American corn). They added so many cubes of beef I wasn't expecting, it was amazing! It also came with a side of tortillas or chips (I opted for chips), shredded lettuce (to provide texture and soak up some oil in the soup), onions (very critical to just dump all the onions in the soup, unless you happen to hate onions), and oregano, which I put about half in the soup. They also provided chili flakes, which I ignored, because I knew that the pozole was already well seasoned (the pozole in the picture was already half eaten before I thought to write a review; it was that good). If you've got sensitive taste buds, pozole isn't a dish for you, because this dish is a flavor bomb! Normally pozole doesn't come with beef cubes, but this is Utah, and frankly, the beef cubes enhanced the soup considerably. I also ordered a fish soft taco, and it had a whole fish filet! That doesn't normally happen in California's fish tacos, mainly because of inflation, but this place does that and it rocks! I was extremely hungry from a long day of hiking at Bryce Canyon, so I also ordered a carnitas (pork) soft taco and adobaba (marinated pork) soft taco, both were really good, with the carnitas being soft but also crunchy, which gave it a really nice texture. The adobaba looked like marinated bacon, which was about as you imagine, it's marinated bacon! It was a flavor bomb. Needless to say we ordered a 2nd round of items to go, because this place slaps. read more

Some pretty solid tacos here. The rolled tacos were absolutely smothered in guac, which was a huge win. I enjoyed having a salsa bar with a variety of toppings and salsas to add to my dishes. Though I'm sure they're not entirely authentic, this place seems more authentic than most of the "Mexican" restaurants in the area. read more

This place haunts me. Who would have expected to find amazing Mexican food in southern Utah? I ordered a carne asada burrito. It was a delicious all-meat burrito with no fillers. My wife had a torta which she compares to a place she raves about in AZ that was by her old work. The staff were super friendly and the food came out quickly - and reasonably prices. I was pretty hesitant to get Mexican food in Utah cause honestly I wasn't really sure how it would be but the reviews in this place seemed good and let me tell you it was honestly up there with some of the best Mexican food I've had and I live in California. The inside of the restaurant was spacious and had plenty of seating, definitely gave fast casual Mexican restaurant vibes-- super home-y. The cashier was this young lady who was so genuine and sweet, she was helpful in deciding what to get for me, had honest opinions about dishes and was super friendly. I ordered the #6 plate with green salsa instead of red, and everything was perfect. The chicken had a perfect texture, the rice was especially good and seasoned well just like everything else. The beans were the perfect amount of mashed so it wasn't just mush but wasn't hard either, and they put plenty of sauce and toppings on the enchilada. The guacamole salsa located for self serve at the toppings bar inside the restaurant was PERFECT. Genuinely the best guacamole salsa I've ever had. I also ordered an horchata which again, you've guessed it--was perfect as well. It had the right amount of sweet to rice ratio. And finally I ordered the flan which wasn't bad, I probably would skip it next time, it just needed more glaze I think or just a little more flavor but if I was really craving a sweet treat it wasn't that bad. My total for all of this came to about 17$ which I thought was a pretty reasonable price. Sorry I forgot to take pictures but trust me you won't regret it. read more

No pics this time but this was surprisingly good food in an unassuming location. The inside is humble and comfortable. The woman taking our order was patient and answered all of our questions. We ordered chips for the salsa bar not realizing that they were hot chips. Sooooo good and not something we have found at a lot of Mexican restaurants. We tried two red salsas and the creamy guacamole one. The red ones were spicy - one was too spicy for us but the other was manageable. The green one was very tasty. My 11 year old got a cheese quesadilla and said it was good and A LOT. She ate a little more than half. I got the #6 (chicken hard taco & chicken enchilada). My husband got a #4 (two beef tacos). Both of us really liked our food. When the food came I thought about going to ask for some sour cream but there was a line and it turns out I didn't need it. My chicken hard taco was delicious. The chicken was flavorful and with the right amount of cheese and a ton of shredded lettuce. I honestly could have eaten two more if I had the room. As it was I got through that and a few bites of my enchilada and had to stop. The enchilada was good too. The sauce had more tomato flavor than I expected but I liked it. The rice wasn't my favorite but it wasn't bad. The beans were better than I was hoping for because I am picky about my refried beans. I also wished I had more room to eat more.
