Yes, open for an early breakfast! We arrived at 8:30am after enjoying the Wildlife Refuge. Don't let the faded signage and lack of posted hours fool you. It felt like the women of the house were making me breakfast. We had Huevos Rancheros, Huevos a la Mexicana (fresh & amazingly tasty), good strong coffee and pozole (on the house!). We've had many mediocre meals in our small town touring in northern CA and southern OR. This was one of the best meals by far. Super friendly owners / employees too. read more

Best tacos I've had in 5 years. As good as anything you'll get in LA, besides maybe slightly lower quality ingredients here, due to the location (no fault of theirs). In any case, I didn't notice and you won't either. Friendly service and amazing food. You can see them making masa and chopping fresh cilantro in the back. If I lived in town I would eat here as often as I could afford, which would be lots because these prices are beyond fair. Can't recommend highly enough! ps: get the combo plate. THIS PLACE IS LEGIT!!!!! I have lived in Tulelake for a good majority of my life, and every time I come back to Tule to visit my parents, I make a stop at this little taco shop. As a huge fan of the taco trucks in the Bay Area, I have definitely had the best of the best. Tacos from Tacos ala Mexicana are definitely comparable to those in the Bay. The last time I was there I had two carne asada tacos and two tacos al pastor. All the tacos here come with finely chopped cabbage, diced onion, and cilantro on top. They give you a side of homemade HOT salsa to pour on your tacos, as well as a slice of lime and sliced radishes. Tacos here are fairly affordable ($1.50 or $1.75 I believe--much more affordable than Jalapeno's in KFalls!). The carne asada tacos were great! The al pastor tacos are spicy pork. The spiciness came from what seemed like a dry rub for the pork--and believe me, after a few bites the heat definitely picked up, but that didn't stop me from chowing down! If you're out on the road, they also have a taco truck location at the Les Schwab near the California/Oregon border. If you eat in the restaurant, they'll serve you homemade chips with homemade salsa!!! read more

Attention vegetarians, authentic Mexican food lovers, and all omnivores: We had lunch at Tacos a la Mexicana today, after discovering that Captain Jack's is closed until March. I order vegetarian usually when dining out, and Yelp reviewers mentioned great chiles rellenos. They were spot on! Fantastic chiles, great salsa and warm beans with cotija served with chips. The photos are of my daughter's veggie tacos (impressive!), and a veggie sope, which was also very tasty. My son ordered the tamale plate, and LOVED it, but it was HUGE (3 steaming tamales, rice and beans), so he excitedly wrapped up some for tomorrow. Service was fast and attentive, especially for how busy they were. And for those of you who like big plates of food and value...well, that's impressive as well. The gigantic tamale plate was just $10, and our total bill for five was $40. (Make sure you leave a generous tip; they deserve it!) Marvelous little establishment. I have a long (well, not that long) tradition of stopping at Tacos Ala Mexicana following each target-shooting trip in the countryside around Merrill. There have even been days I've considered driving all the way to Merrill just to go to Tacos Ala Mexicana. I've ordered several different burritos and tacos and been impressed each time. Also, I always enjoy the Mexican glass-bottled Cokes and sometimes double-fist it with a giant horchata. Most importantly, the depictions of various saints on the walls (and the dancing Santa Clause in the corner) just make my day each time I visit. Last, I've been really impressed with the staff each time I've visited. They're friendly, they don't mind answering dumb questions about the artwork, and they seem to be really good with kids. I agree with the Jess K., the Bearded Lady: This place is legit. If they weren't so inconveniently located in another town, then they'd get a solid 5-star review. read more

Actually I was surprised there was a good Mexican place in Oregon. I ordered toungue burrito. It was tasty and cheap, $6.75. The sauce on the chili relleno was a beautiful red light thing. I am writing this review late because I have since left the area, but still have good memories of amazing food here. When I moved to the area from San Diego, I was worried that I would have cravings for good Mexican food. I am so happy this heavenly place exists because Tacos a la Mexicana has amazing homestyle eats, and even offers unusual cuts like lingua (tongue) and cavesa (cheek meat). Guacamole made to order?? Amazing! I recommend the chile relleno and any of the tortas (which are delicately layered on homemade bread!!!!). Prices are very reasonable and service is always great. This place is so good I've made it a family tradition. Any time I'm passing through Merrill I eat here. This is my third visit and I've never been disappointed. It's a little divey, but the food is really good and authentic. There salsas are really good too. Today I had "beef enchiladas" and it was freakin made with Carne Asada (steak)!!! I really prefer authentic Mexican more than watered down Americanized Mexican food. If authentic Latin fare is something you love too, then give this place a shot! read more

We lived in Merrill for 10 years and went RVing before the weather turned cold, each year. Eventually we left Merrill and became "Continuous Travelers" (full time RViers). After we left the only things we missed were the people and Taco's Ala Mexicana! We have traveled the US and have never found any burrito that even compares for the price and taste. It has been 6 years since our last visit and we took a 20 mile detour on our way to LaPine Oregon to stop in Merrill to see freinds and HAVE A BURRITO at Taco's Ala Mexicana! I believe the ladies that worked for Sylvia before, owns the store now, and Sylvia opened a restaurant in Doris, CA, about 25 miles to the West. My wife and I believe the food is still as good as ever, but maybe just a tad warmer, although I did not pay for it the next day!! We stayed at the Wild Goose RV Park in Merrill for 5 days. Last night, the people next to us wanted to go to supper. and they wanted to walk so we tried the Casa Villanueva, about 250 yards down the street. The food was not as warm "butt" I payed for it the next day!!! Casa Villanueva's food was alright (me)/um,ok(my wife), but for the price difference, $9 compared to Taco's Ala Mexicana's $6 and the next days payment, we will continue to eat at Taco's Ala Mexicana! Sure the restaurant may have a critter now and then, BUT folks it is in the country, right next to a highway and on the backside, a river. I found a roach in our coach the other day, I set traps to get them: But I won't quit eating in my motorhome! There are a lot of farmers and truck drivers that eat at Taco's Ala Mexicana; and they may even bring a critter or two in for lunch, although we haven't seen any: critters that is! We have never been disappointed eating at Taco's Ala Mexicana! In fact as I write this, on Sunday afternoon we are just killing time, so we can go to Taco's Ala Mexicana, since we ate at a church potluck for lunch, which we had not planned on doing: but were invited to stay, so we did. We didn't go to Taco's Ala Mexicana for lunch, but will go for supper in a few minutes, We just returned from eating at Taco's Ala Mexicana and the food was Great and the place was packed! Two of the customers were Tractor Trailer drivers on their way to Reno. We will be leaving tomorrow with a few Taco's Ala Mexicana's burritos for the freezer! We would get more but we don't have room in our RV's fridge! If you are from the big city life and use to place settings, waiters, waiting on you hand and foot and smiling to your face to get a big tip; and then doing other things when they go behind the walls: then Taco's Ala Mexicana may not be for you. But if you just want a down right great burrito or other Authentic Mexican food: then Taco's Ala Mexicana is a stop you can enjoy the food and watch the trucks and farm equipment go by 10 to 15 feet away; as the store is at the East end of the town, on the South side of the road, right on the main street/Hwy 39 that goes through town, East to West. People need to remember though, that what we believe is great food: may be different than others taste and vise versa! You won't know for yourself, until you try it. But people also need to think about, if everyone loved the food, then we would probably not be able to get in to eat! Don't be surprised if it is full of farm workers and truckers: Because they also know where the good food is! But sorry to say we will be on our way: But with a few in the freezer! read more
