Stopped by Tacombi and tried the Al Pastor, Carne Asada, and Sinaloa Shrimp tacos. All three were flavorful and well-executed, but the standout for me was definitely the Carne Asada. The meat was incredibly tender, perfectly seasoned, and had that salty, rich, slightly fatty flavor that makes a great steak taco memorable. The homemade tortillas were also excellent and really elevated the experience. The Al Pastor and Sinaloa Shrimp were both delicious as well, with fresh ingredients and good flavor throughout. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was enjoyable. My main critiques are that the price feels a little high for the portion sizes, and I would have loved a more generous helping of meat. I also wish there was a larger variety of salsas available to customize the tacos. Tried this place out with a friend yesterday and I have mixed feelings. On one hand, the food and service is good. The space is nice and the restrooms are clean. On the other hand, its pricy and we had issues with the charges. When we sat down, we were given the old menu, not a huge deal. When we were given the new menu and mulling it over, our server asked if we wanted some chips and guac while we decided. We said yes thinking that it was like a free thing, some Mexican restaurants give you free chips and salsa while you wait. We were given it a few minutes later and it was really good. My friend ordered the lunch special. The food was good no issues on that front. I ordered 2 tacos, the shrimp and the birria. The shrimp was my favorite but it did instantly fall apart, I ended up eating it with a fork. The issue was the bill. For 2 people it was $88. Granted we had an alcoholic drink each($15 x2 but they were strong), my friend ordered a pop as well. His lunch special came up on the bill a la cart so the deal wasn't a deal and I also ordered 2 tacos. And we were charged almost $16 for the guac!!! Not once did our server say that it was a charged item and looking at the menu, it came in 2 sizes. So our server, without telling us it was a charged item, ordered it for us and gave us for the large which is double in price than the small($7). Perhaps its on us for double checking about the guac. But to me, that should have been a conversation like "Hey did you want to order chips and guac? It comes in 2 sizes, a small and a large" instead of saying "You guys want some guac and chips while you decide". That way its a further clue on that its a charged item and not just a freebie. We didn't raise a fuss about the charges then. We just decided not to return to this restaurant in the future. I think I saw it was doing a grand reopening or something like that but hopefully those kinks are worked out. Great atmosphere! While the seating may not be the most comfortable, it does really feel like I am set up at a backyard barbecue. Food comes out fast and i would highly recommend a frozen margarita to go with! The house red and green salsas were not my favorite, but I loved the green sauce that came with the shrimp tacos. Food was quite expensive and regular sized portions, so my fiance and I ordered three tacos each. For two drinks and the 6 tacos the bill came out to about 80 bucks. An absolute gem in the wicker park neighborhood. I've tried every taco on the menu, and every single one of them is delicious. My current favs are the chicken tinga taco (see pic: the taco is HUGE and full of flavor and happiness) as well as the black bean and sweet potato. I always order the avocado tostada too. Tuesday is BOGO tacos (and avo tostados). That stacked with happy hour ($5 beers, $9 margs) and you got yourself a fabulous weeknight dinner that eases the pain of it only being tuesday. Can't believe how delicious these tacos were! We lucked out to be in the area on a Tuesday and the dine-in 2fer special was killer! Got 2 al pastor (excellent grill taste on the meat), 2 grilled shrimp (accompanying green sauce has a kick!), 2 birria (loved the shot of broth) and 2 grilled fish. Stopped in here for Happy Hour. Very cute place with an open concept. Restaurant comes from Playa del Carmen. Mostly street food to order but it looked liked it came quick. I have my eye on trying the fish taco when I return. For this occasion we just got drinks because we were headed to restaurant down the street with no booze. For drinks we tried the watermelon/tequila/lime cocktail. It was flavorful and was even better when Alexis made it spicy for me. By the way Alexis was super kind and thorough. He knew a lot about the history of the restaurant and other locations. We also tried the Michelada which is different than I have had before but good. I did enjoy the lager beer they had. Literally came here 3 times already just to get their agua fresca! If you grab it to go, they put it in a cute little bottle with a screw on lid. Everytime I come I get the watermelon flavor because it's so fresh and sweet! Once I stopped by and was telling the manager (I think) how much I loved it and he gave me the pineapple agua fresca to try and it was so good! Great service and you can't go wrong when their agua fresca is so fresh and only about $4! I came and sat inside once with some friends and we ordered some guacamole and chips. The guac was so fresh and tasty! And the chips were extra crunchy. The small size was quite small and probably is better for just 1 person, so next time I would order a large to share. The small is a bit pricey but it was delicious so I can't really complain. The ambience is so fun and lively. It's bright and colorful inside and people seem to be having a great time. I loved that each table had a little coat rack next to it so you can hang your bags! So convenient and not obtrusive at all. Great touch. I need to come back to actually try the food and margaritas! This place is cool, v much a wicker park vibe. Kid friendly, we went on a Saturday night, it was full of families, and kept us warm. The tacos were great! I got a Baja taco and an Al pastor, they have horchata, Topo Chico, and margaritas (also by the pitcher). We were super excited for a new taco place but man, for what you get... the prices are a JOKE. I wanted to give a two but the servers were friendly and the food wasn't bad... but SEVEN dollars for one taco which has maybeeee 1.5 oz of meat?! You've gotta be kidding me. For tacos we got: - Birria - 8/10 very tasty but the greasiest iteration I have ever had and I have had a lot of birria tacos - Al Pastor - 7/10 lacked flavor and tiny meat portion on an already tiny taco - Seared fish 6/10 TINY piece of fish with a weird spice, the salsas were necessary - Steak 7.5/10 - this was good but again tiny and hardly filled at all Overall, no way in hell we will be back with these prices. Food was awesome! A little heavy on the salt as herbs and spices are the best way to make foods from South America rock. The food and ambience was awesome and having a sink to wash your hands first in the dinning area made me feel like was in South America like the Dominican Republic and you can wash your feet at restaurants there on that island and this restaurant has a sink to wash your hands so I loved that as it was amazing food and good ambience and very nice well dressed staff and great food and staff. The place was clean, lots of natural light, and I liked the sink to wash your hands, sometimes I just want to wash my hands before eating without having to go to the restroom. Was in the mood for tacos and this spot was across from Taco Bell so it thought I'd give it a try vs a chain. Over priced if you ask me, I ordered 3 tacos and a quesadilla and the total was $34. This was the smallest quesadilla I've ever had for $10, and it wasn't that great. The food wasn't bad at all, just not worth the value. My date had the sweet potato taco and she liked it! She said it was spicy. Also, had a couple margaritas and those were good. I love a shaken margarita. However, woke up with a nasty headache, so I don't know what that tequila was. But it tasted great! Would definitely return, service was good and the atmosphere is cool. I can't thank the manager of this Tacombi enough for his kindness. I believe his name is Diego. This guy deserves a pay raise, recognition, plus so much more. Due to medication side effects, I started to experience a severe panic attack while casually shopping in Wicker Park. My girlfriend thought it'd be best if I got some food in my system, so we went to Tacombis. Right when we sat down, I told my girlfriend that I needed to go to the hospital. She grabbed the manager (Diego), informed him about the situation and left to grab the car. Diego brought me food, a Coca-Cola in case my blood sugar was low, and kept me company. When my girlfriend pulled up with the car, he helped me walk to the car. When my girlfriend offered her credit card to pay for the food, he denied. This place is very special. It truly feels as if you are dining in Mexico. There was only one server and one bartender and they definitely didn't expect the rush they got this Friday. I was here with my brother and his husband. We waited in line for their pop-up Michelin starred restaurant out of Mexico City only to get turned away after 6 hours. We were promised that they would make it right with free alcoholic beverages or tacos if we do not drink. We returned the next week, and after being served the most tasteless tacos I've ever eaten, we went to pay. We were told that, despite calling back a couple days before to make sure that they were still honoring the deal of a free mixed drink or pair of tacos, that they would no longer honor this. Instead we were offered 2 agua frescas to, I guess split amongst the 3 of us? We declined their less than generous offer and left incredibly disappointed. I felt utterly disrespected by the way this situation was handled. I work a lot of events in Chicago as a member of one of the local unions that is often called upon to help with large events in the surrounding areas. I will make it a point to vehemently disparage this place when asked about it, or for recommendations. I sincerely hope nobody else that waited in that line with us was treated with such disrespect.
