Ordered chicken soft tacos. The chicken was ice cold so we took it back to the counter. They stuck the Styrofoam container in the microwave and brought it back to us. Now we have a melted Styrofoam container, tacos with burning hot cheese and lettuce and ice cold chicken. Brought it back up to the counter where they microwaved the whole Styrofoam container again and brought it back to us. Now we have burning hot lettuce and cheese and room temp chicken. How does a Taco shop have no clue how to make a chicken taco with at least warm chicken. read more

Took an hour and 15 minutes to get cold food. Then found something plastic in my food. Manager too busy to talk. The girl that answered the phone acted like she didn't really care! read more

Man oh man. This place took me back to my childhood. They have taco shops everywhere, but this one is the only one that's the real Taco Shop. Is it authentic Mexican? No, of course not. We're in Kansas. Is it Taco Bell? No, don't talk crazy. It's better. This is Taco Shop. Owner of the most delicious Sancho Supreme, house-made queso, Mexican pizzas, taco burgers, and everything in between. I used to come here all the time when we lived here around 23 years ago and it hasn't changed a bit. One bite of my Sancho Supreme and I was right back in my childhood. Thank you for keeping this place true and the same all these years. read more

Taco Shop - Mexican Near Me - Hays, Kansas

See all

No frills, just simple, freshly made food to order. Fast service. Had mine dine-in in less than 5 minutes. They deliver too ;) Not a fan of the rice--pasty to me and weird taste. For $8, they totally scrimped on the chicken, but taste of dish overall was just good, nothing to write home about as other reviewers have said. read more

Taco Shop - Shredded chicken nachos supreme--fresh condiments--mild sauce for me & salsa Fresca too! - Mexican Near Me - Hays, Kansas

This place is just a lower budget Taco Bell.... Tacos ares plain and simple stuff you can make at home and way better. I also got a cheese enchilada, it was spongie, i didn't finish that. There service was quick you just order at a window inside and they say your number d you grab it. When i went it was on a Tuesday evening and there were tons of people so they must like it. Ambience wasn't loud or anything typical fast food type surroundings. This is all opinions based on my end. There's better options in Hays Kansas. read more

The foods really good, I'm not sure why it has so many bad reviews, the employees act as if they're slaves, which they are, but they need to show it a lot less, come on guys, how can i enjoy my food when you're all crying about your $10 an hour? on a plus note: Darryl and Seamus are pookies read more

Tried the chili con queso which was the !! 6-pack of hard shells to perfection. Can't say enough about this place. Forget those other joints, they can't compare. read more

Taco Shop - Mexican Near Me - Hays, Kansas

We love their food and how fast they bring it to you. People are always kind. And the tacos are delicious.

Service was great. Very nice employees. Food came out fast. The food was just ok. Great price.

I order delivery often and never receive a straw for my drink. The first couple times I just got over it but it's getting ridiculous. I won't stop ordering, but I'm leaving this review so you can address the problem. The next time my drink actually comes with a straw I will immediately take it down. read more

This is like having tacos at home when you were a kid. Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. We stopped here on our way from Oklahoma to Seattle. There are more authentic places around Hays. This place fills a niche that the farm raised people around here can totally eat up. Would visit again next time through Hays. read more

Good food at a good price. Usually pretty quick, and always consistently good! I used to always go to another Mexican restaurant in town, but after trying this one, this is now my go to! read more

Here's a hint to the owner of Taco Shop......just deliver the chips with the CCQ orders. I am so tired of ordering CCQ with chips and not getting the chips. Wise up! read more

This is the reason I have formed a severe distaste for white people since leaving California, and a big reason why I'm returning to California. The food is absolute garbage. The tacos, the burritos, the sauce... bland bland bland. Burning in a bland hell deserving only of the most severe disdain. Who the heck likes this kind of food? How does anyone eat it? If you know what flavor is, if you have ever had good Mexican food, if you live in a reality not dictated by the hellhole that is the Midwest, then avoid this place at all costs. I struggled to swallow even a single bite. My soda was good. read more

Like the Golden Q, this is another Hays institution that doesn't live up to its reputation. The service is decent, no problems there but the food is mediocre at best. I was surprised by how bland it was. The shell on my taco was clearly stale. You can make the same thing at home with cheap ground beef and off brand seasonings. Bottom line: if you're in the mood for cheap Mexican food that you're going to regret eating, just head to to Taco Bell. read more

Taco Shop - The quesadillas here are hit and miss. Sometimes they're good, other times it's a mess. - Mexican Near Me - Hays, Kansas

This place is my favorite taco place around! Have no idea why there was a one star rating. The staff is always super friendly and helpful. The food is fresh and delicious. It's our go to place when we are in Hays! Give it a try---- you won't be disappointed! read more

Have a toilet nearby, because this place will give you the shits. I had their pork tacos and didn't realize till half way through eating the first taco that the center was cold. I'm pretty sure these came out of a fridge and weren't microwaved long enough. If you really want to try this place, I recommend their convenient delivery service so you can eat it in your bathroom. read more

To call this place a Mexican restaurant would be an abuse of the phrase "Mexican restaurant". There is not one iota of mexican-ness to this place. This restaurant caters to the hardened prison inmate who can't find Mexico on a map. This place makes Taco Bell deserving of a Michelin ranking, folks. If you plan to walk into this joint for a taco fix, hold on to your butthole for dear life, because this ride will be bumpier than a turboprop flying out of MCI in a lightning storm. First off, let's discuss the restaurant itself. It's clean, has an adequate number of tables, and appears recently painted. The cashier was a mountain of a man who was nice and efficient. There were a number of patrons dining at the restaurant while I was there. This concludes the list of nice things I can say about this place. Next, lets discuss the menu. There are a large number of options to peruse here, all with air-quotes-funny names that don't actually tell you anything about what the fuck you are ordering. A Sancho? In reality, this is mexican slang for a dude who has sex with your girlfriend. As a food item, I still have no idea what it was supposed to be. A Borracho? It was pictured as a burrito covered in "cheese" sauce. Seeing as "borracho" means drunk in Spanish, I would only imagine that this food item's cheese sauce is meant to induce vomiting once consumed. I decided to "play it safe" with the giant taco and a cheese enchilada supreme. I mean, who can truly fuck up a taco and a cheese enchilada? (By the way - ordering something supreme means they add sour cream, just like Taco Bell. In fact, the little marketing posters by the register and the standups on all of the tables use the Taco Bell font on them. ¡Qué originàl!) Once the food arrived, I had a hard time figuring out what was what on the tray. The nondescript styrofoam tray contained my enchilada, while a butcher paper wrapped taco came alongside it. The cheese enchilada was nothing more than cheddar cheese melted into a flour tortilla with some sour cream. It had no sauce, and no flavor. Thankfully I had stopped at the "fresh salsa" bar to grab some mild sauce and some pico de gallo. The tortilla was the worst tortilla I have ever encountered in my life. I think it was a sheet of wet newspaper dipped in lard and dusted in flour. I've had better government issued cheddar cheese. And the sour cream was gelatinous and cottage cheese like in appearance. Nonetheless, I decided to eat it, and got through about half with the help of the aforementioned red sauce and pico de gallo. Onto the giant taco. Now, upon unwrapping it, I found what appeared to be a hard shell taco wearing a flour tortilla raincoat. (Oh, I get it, you double shell the tacos just like your authentic counterpart Taco Bell.) Lettuce, tomato, and cheese... Everything appeared to be in order. I took a bite and instantly felt my gag reflex kick in. The inside meat was gray... Gray enough for me to wonder if I was eating a hoofed animal at all. I can now say that I know what "gray" tastes like. And again, cottage cheese-like sour cream to add insult to injury. I honestly tried to take another bite... But... Words will never capture what that flavor was like. Tears came to my eyes. My esophagus closed itself in absolute protest of what I was proposing to send through my alimentary canal. I truly wish I could un-know that horrible taste. I would rather get teabagged by a gorilla than to ever have that flavor introduced to my tastebuds again. The only thing that could have helped was to drink the bottle of lemon scented cleaner that the mountainous cashier was using to wipe down the empty tables. And so folks, I abandoned the remainder of that taco, ran for my rental car, drove away and rejoiced/wept at my escape/misfortune. I know this is place holds a special place in the heart of many Hayesians.... And I'm sorry it had to come to this.... But NO. Never again. No way. Nuh-uh. Just. Plain. NO! I'd rather have a root canal performed through my rectum than to ever dine at this establishment again. read more

I have eaten at some of the best, most highly touted restaurants in the world. Does Taco Shop compare to those? Not at all! However, this place is such a classic that you simply can not deny its greatness. It's not just about re-living the nostalgia of my younger days, it's much more than that. It's the finest microwaved, cheap Mexican-ish food you will ever come across anywhere in Western Kansas. You will find yourself craving a borracho under the oddest of circumstances. You may find yourself in Mexico and suddenly crave one of these weird incarnations from Taco Shop. Why? I don't know. I simply can't explain it, but it exists. For all those naysayers say that the "people of Hays love it". You're F**king right we do! And those of us who have left Hays to go on and live in cities with culinary experts and wonders still find themselves craving the pocco pizza, nachos and other oddities. You will never, ever see any of these items anywhere in any restaurant in Mexico, but I don't care, it's a Hays thang and it's goddamn good! God Bless Taco Shop! read more

How good is Taco Shop? Should I eat there? So glad you asked. It's great, and yes. More specifically, I've been living outside of Hays for approximately 10 years (That's a decade, folks.), and just spent an hour trying to Google an approximation of their chili con queso with meat (CCQ). I often have hankerings for their sour cream sanchezes, and am glad that other people get to eat them. How would you describe the food? Again - great question. I often describe it as Mexican/German fusion. Yes, it's broadly Mexican. But something about the combination of ingredients and seasonings used ends up being a hat tip to Hays's Volga German heritage. It's unique, and unparalleled in the world of Mexican/German crossover gastronomy. Will Taco Shop win a Michelin Star or two? I don't know. WE don't know. All we know is that if it does, you'll be able to say that you ate there before it was bestowed this fitting award, and then you can celebrate with an enchilada. And a CCQ. Or rather - do it now for those of us who can't. read more

Ordered delivery from across town at a hotel. Here in less than 30 minutes and tastes pretty good for fast-food. Super Combo is a lot of food for the money. If I'm ever back in town...this will be the joint I'll order from if I don't wanna go out. Great job guys!!! read more

Sorry was told this place was better than Taco Bell. Taco Bell bell is way better than this place. Food is a 1 star. This might be popular with the college here. This would not last in the city. read more

Taco shop, ya it's a dive, although everytime in Hays I make certain to eat here or delivery to the hotel. Growing up poor this would of been a God send as we went hungry some nights. Now through hard work and by the great folks of this community and surrounding areas situations have changed greatly thanks to these folks. Thus, I always order this once everytime in Hays to remember where I had been and again to keep the feet to ground. The staff here is totally awesome and most are working their way through college and paying for theur own tuition at the same time, hats off and keep it up!!! read more

The Shop will always have a special place in my heart. This was my high school hang out. Delivering tacos for The Shop was a great job for my senior year and I still get mileage out of "taco driving" stories to this day. On the rare occasion I make it back to Hays I ALWAYS stop by Taco Shop; it is my one requirement for a trip back home. Please set your expectations accordingly, this is a fast food Mexican joint that delivers tacos, do not expect haute cuisine. That being said the food is made fresh - I should know, I used to make it - and it is delicious. I am currently on one of my rare sojourns back to the Great Plains and I am getting excited for my tacos, taco burger, and three amigos. Thank you Taco Shop for being all that I remember! It is good, ever so briefly, to be home. read more

I have only been here once the food wasn't bad but Customer service needs to be worked on. The guy at the cash register yelled at us when we came into pick up our order. I now know what Taco Night at a Homeless Shelter tastes like. Hands down worst food I've ever had in my life. It's beyond me how anyone could like this place unless all of their taste buds had been burnt off. Canned chicken, canned sauces, cheap stale tortillas, and the list of horribleness could go on. Save you taste buds and NEVER EVER eat here! read more

5 stars?? worst food I have ever had...not even fast food quality, everything comes from a can, cheese dip is just processed cheese from a bag... avoid this place at all costs. Beware!! read more

Taco Shop is such a loved place here in town. Travelers don't care for it Their mistake I have been in Hays for over 30. To explain the draw is not really possible but I bet there is a restaurant somewhere these naysayers go to that compare if not they are missing out on the unique experiences in life. Being rude is just not nice .Here in Hays we pride ourselves for being nice I love Taco shop Ate there just yesterday yummy. 6 pack tacos. Favorite. Loco Taco! My favorite fast food Mexican food anywhere. Not cuisine but just what it should be. Great place to stuff yourself cheap.

This place is ehh... tacos are okish ... enchiladas yeah no never again like eating soup on a plate with rubber. Most food taste like it's not housemade more like canned or delivered in large quantities. Your at the cash register you can see huge cans of jalapeños tomatos etc. guacamole was so salty I felt like I was gonna get sick. If you want Mexican don't go here... not even close to being Mexican or anything read more

Great college hangout, usually a must have for returning FHSU graduates. Food really hasn't changed much in 30 years.
