Now we have a melted Styrofoam container, tacos with burning hot cheese and lettuce and ice cold chicken. Brought it back up to the counter where they microwaved the whole Styrofoam container again and brought it back to us. Now we have burning hot lettuce and cheese and room temp chicken. To call this place a Mexican restaurant would be an abuse of the phrase "Mexican restaurant". There is not one iota of mexican-ness to this place. This restaurant caters to the hardened prison inmate who can't find Mexico on a map. This place makes Taco Bell deserving of a Michelin ranking, folks. If you plan to walk into this joint for a taco fix, hold on to your butthole for dear life, because this ride will be bumpier than a turboprop flying out of MCI in a lightning storm. First off, let's discuss the restaurant itself. It's clean, has an adequate number of tables, and appears recently painted. The cashier was a mountain of a man who was nice and efficient. There were a number of patrons dining at the restaurant while I was there. This concludes the list of nice things I can say about this place. Next, lets discuss the menu. There are a large number of options to peruse here, all with air-quotes-funny names that don't actually tell you anything about what the fuck you are ordering. A Sancho? In reality, this is mexican slang for a dude who has sex with your girlfriend. As a food item, I still have no idea what it was supposed to be. A Borracho? It was pictured as a burrito covered in "cheese" sauce. Seeing as "borracho" means drunk in Spanish, I would only imagine that this food item's cheese sauce is meant to induce vomiting once consumed. I decided to "play it safe" with the giant taco and a cheese enchilada supreme. I mean, who can truly fuck up a taco and a cheese enchilada? (By the way - ordering something supreme means they add sour cream, just like Taco Bell. In fact, the little marketing posters by the register and the standups on all of the tables use the Taco Bell font on them. ¡Qué originàl!) Once the food arrived, I had a hard time figuring out what was what on the tray. The nondescript styrofoam tray contained my enchilada, while a butcher paper wrapped taco came alongside it. The cheese enchilada was nothing more than cheddar cheese melted into a flour tortilla with some sour cream. It had no sauce, and no flavor. Thankfully I had stopped at the "fresh salsa" bar to grab some mild sauce and some pico de gallo. The tortilla was the worst tortilla I have ever encountered in my life. I think it was a sheet of wet newspaper dipped in lard and dusted in flour. I've had better government issued cheddar cheese. And the sour cream was gelatinous and cottage cheese like in appearance. Nonetheless, I decided to eat it, and got through about half with the help of the aforementioned red sauce and pico de gallo. Onto the giant taco. Now, upon unwrapping it, I found what appeared to be a hard shell taco wearing a flour tortilla raincoat. (Oh, I get it, you double shell the tacos just like your authentic counterpart Taco Bell.) Lettuce, tomato, and cheese... Everything appeared to be in order. I took a bite and instantly felt my gag reflex kick in. The inside meat was gray... Gray enough for me to wonder if I was eating a hoofed animal at all. I can now say that I know what "gray" tastes like. And again, cottage cheese-like sour cream to add insult to injury. I honestly tried to take another bite... But... Words will never capture what that flavor was like. Tears came to my eyes. My esophagus closed itself in absolute protest of what I was proposing to send through my alimentary canal. I truly wish I could un-know that horrible taste. I would rather get teabagged by a gorilla than to ever have that flavor introduced to my tastebuds again. The only thing that could have helped was to drink the bottle of lemon scented cleaner that the mountainous cashier was using to wipe down the empty tables. And so folks, I abandoned the remainder of that taco, ran for my rental car, drove away and rejoiced/wept at my escape/misfortune. I know this is place holds a special place in the heart of many Hayesians.... And I'm sorry it had to come to this.... But NO. Never again. No way. Nuh-uh. Just. Plain. NO! I'd rather have a root canal performed through my rectum than to ever dine at this establishment again. read more

I have eaten at some of the best, most highly touted restaurants in the world. Does Taco Shop compare to those? Not at all! However, this place is such a classic that you simply can not deny its greatness. It's not just about re-living the nostalgia of my younger days, it's much more than that. It's the finest microwaved, cheap Mexican-ish food you will ever come across anywhere in Western Kansas. You will find yourself craving a borracho under the oddest of circumstances. You may find yourself in Mexico and suddenly crave one of these weird incarnations from Taco Shop. Why? I don't know. I simply can't explain it, but it exists. How good is Taco Shop? Should I eat there? So glad you asked. It's great, and yes. More specifically, I've been living outside of Hays for approximately 10 years (That's a decade, folks.), and just spent an hour trying to Google an approximation of their chili con queso with meat (CCQ). I often have hankerings for their sour cream sanchezes, and am glad that other people get to eat them. How would you describe the food? Again - great question. I often describe it as Mexican/German fusion. Yes, it's broadly Mexican. But something about the combination of ingredients and seasonings used ends up being a hat tip to Hays's Volga German heritage. It's unique, and unparalleled in the world of Mexican/German crossover gastronomy. Will Taco Shop win a Michelin Star or two? I don't know. WE don't know. All we know is that if it does, you'll be able to say that you ate there before it was bestowed this fitting award, and then you can celebrate with an enchilada. And a CCQ. Taco shop, ya it's a dive, although everytime in Hays I make certain to eat here or delivery to the hotel. Growing up poor this would of been a God send as we went hungry some nights. Now through hard work and by the great folks of this community and surrounding areas situations have changed greatly thanks to these folks. Thus, I always order this once everytime in Hays to remember where I had been and again to keep the feet to ground. The Shop will always have a special place in my heart. This was my high school hang out. Delivering tacos for The Shop was a great job for my senior year and I still get mileage out of "taco driving" stories to this day. On the rare occasion I make it back to Hays I ALWAYS stop by Taco Shop; it is my one requirement for a trip back home. Please set your expectations accordingly, this is a fast food Mexican joint that delivers tacos, do not expect haute cuisine. That being said the food is made fresh - I should know, I used to make it - and it is delicious. I have only been here once the food wasn't bad but Customer service needs to be worked on. The guy at the cash register yelled at us when we came into pick up our order. Love this busy little restaurant. It is a small town piece of history and I am friends with the previous owner who opened the restaurant long ago. It is indeed Mexican with a hint of the Volga German heritage of the area, so it is unique, delicious and has the charm and terroir that you can only find in Hays America.
