Been here a few times and also visited their location in Ellis. Food itself is good and above par for what you can expect in the Midwest. Quality is fairly consistent and there were no surprises. Service, however, can be hit or miss. Ordered for pick up (at the drive thru window) and also had a sit-down meal at the restaurant. The dine in experience was slow and less attentive - granted the place was busy. But still. Overall, the food is the strong point here. What a fantastic experience! Stayed in Hays overnight. This place has great reviews online and so thought we would try it. Not disappointed in any way. Nowadays prices are sky high for small servings. Not this place.....great prices, filling portions....and to top it off- really nice employees! Owen took my order when I called ahead. He was super friendly and accommodated the special orders due to allergies. This place has a drive up window which is so convenient....especially because the parking lot is full so you know it is very busy inside...and for pickup you don't have to navigate the crown inside! Olivia was at the drive-up window. She was very friendly, efficient, and professional! Got to the hotel and enjoyed a fantastic dinner that was YUMMY! Hays is our half-way stop to Kansas City. We typically spend the night here, and always look for a good place to eat. We've tried several Mexican restaurants, and either left disapppointed, or walked out before even being served. Cancun was amazing! The manager happened to be our server, and he definitely gave us 5-star service. The food was SO tasty, the servings were bountiful, and the price was just right. Condiment bar is superb. Grilled onion seasoned perfectly is so sweet and good. Seasoned, sliced grilled jalapeños are fantastic! A wide array of sauces to sample both green and red. Fish tacos comes with a good amount of fish in flour tortillas. Two fish tacos, pico de gallo, cheese dip, rice and beans come with the meal for $10.99. Ice flavor. Beans were a little runny. Pretty standard menu for a Mexican restaurant. Their fajitas are above average and the portion sizes on most of the dishes are big. The indoor seating can be a little tricky..where you feel claustrophobic and crammed in. Most rookies will like the spot! read more

I have had lunch, dinner, and take-out, and everything has been very good. Some of the dishes are too heavy and cheesy for me, but there are many dishes without that, and they are all delicious! My favorite thing is the salsa bar (many choices--avocado salsa, jalapeno salsa, roasted tomatillo salsa, pico de gallo, roasted jalapenos (YUM) many tomato-based varieties, lots of other toppings). My favorite dishes here so far have been the street tacos with carne asada (ask for them on corn tortillas)--they are light and flavorful, may be ordered ala carte or with rice/beans, pico, and salsa--and the chicken taco salad. The chicken taco salad is basic but done so well--chicken is generously portioned, very tender and juicy. The service is always friendly and attentive, too. Elegant from the outside, it has ample parking for cars, depending on the time and days it tends to be crowded but that is not a problem because they have a subway lounge. From the first step you feel the calid environment of the place, with the typical Mexican decoration, varied music but usually following the custom of that country. The service is very courteous, they do not make you wait and from the beginning they offer you something to drink and even welcome you with a complimentary dish. The food and drink menu is very varied, they have options a little healthier and options for vegans. The dishes meet expectations as they are quite large. Among my favorites are the "Arroz con pollo" and the classic "Burritos" of which they have different options and all of them are very delicious, they have classic drinks and typical Mexican drinks, with and without alcohol. In my opinion it is not expensive, the prices range between 20$ to 25$ per person, depending on what each person eats or drinks and it is totally justified by the size of each dish and the attention they give in the restaurant. They are very friendly, very attentive, speak several languages and are also flexible with the order since you can request modifications in certain dishes. In general, everything is quite fast, the service and the arrival of the food but what I like the most is that they don't rush you with the payment at the end, they let you enjoy your dish and you let them know when you want to pay, which is not often seen in this country. Cancun is perfect to spend time with family, friends or even share in large groups, they offer the basement with the facility to play music to your liking and also more privacy. Came here because this place used to be consistently good. Sorely disappointed this time. Ordered the fajita Hawaiian and a Pepsi. The Pepsi was gross like it was out of syrup. The fajitas I had ordered had shrimp in it and the shrimp wasn't cleaned which completely turned me off the the dish. Only good thing about this visit was the salsa which it had a decent amount of heat and good flavor. At the end I had to wait a good 20 minutes to get the check. My table was cleared and the waiter came and asked if I was doing alright. I'm sorry if my table is clear don't you think I would want to leave? This might be my favorite spot since moving to Hays. I've been to both the Cancun in Ellis and Hays and loved both the pollo Cancun and pollo I forget (had mushrooms and spinach with chicken and cheese sauce). Portions are quite large and the leftovers are still great. Most definitely not the most authentic Mexican (maybe for Kansas it is?), but damn good. "Great Mexican food!" Says this Texan Who knew?! Deliciously surprised to find great, spicy, flavorful Mexican food in a place like Hays, Kansas. On our road trip back to Denver from Nashville, TN my hubs and I were looking for somewhere along I-70 to stop for a late lunch. Always hankering for some chips and salsa (Native Texans) we googled our way to Cancun Mexican Grill, through the quaint downtown section "off the road a piece", looping past Fort Hayes University a couple of blocks away to this unsuspecting salsa/pico/cilantro flavor heaven. (You college kids must love this place for the $ price point and the build your own combos!) I ordered the chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce with the cheese on the side (lactose ) and it was so delish and freshly spicy my tastebuds thought they were in San Antonio. To top it off, I cannot remember another place I've been that had a help-yourself salsa bar with more than a dozen fresh salsa and add-ins ready for the taking. Nice touch, Management! And when you go ask for Jasmine to serve you. Very helpful and such a great smile! The house marg's were very sweet with pineapple juice--think boat drink, I even added an additional shot of good tequila and it was still way too sweet for my taste. What's the deal with Midwest Mexican restaurants? They have awesomely attentive staff, their service is speedy, and the menus are massive. Cancun Mexican Grill hits all of these points. Number one, the food was HOT. They aren't joking when they warn about the plate being hot. It is. The salsa and chips are complementary. The chips are warm, and the salsa has a pleasant chipotle kick that most restaurant salsas do not exhibit. Try it out. I got a chimichanga trio - shrimp, chicken, and beef - that was pretty good. The portion was ample, and the shrimp wasn't over done. Everything was seasoned well. My wife got a chipotle chicken dish. She had no complaints, and especially liked the refried beans. Rice - average. Beans - good, but not altogether different than most refried bean offerings at other restaurants. In all, it's a great Mexican option in Hays. Beware of the chairs though. They have a cross piece that will gouge the heck out of your ankles when you scoot in to the table. It got both my wife and me. read more

My husband and I decided to try this place based on the reviews since we were just passing through Kansas. I don't understand how this place was rated so high. It's one of the worst Mexican food places we've gone to. Everything taste like it came out of a can, even the drinks. I ordered a strawberry margarita and couldn't drink it because it tasted so bad! The food was terrible too. I ordered enchiladas and my husband ordered a taco salad - YUCK is all we can say! Save your money and go somewhere else. This food was very nasty, made me stomach yelp for help. I got cheese enchiladas and it tasted like they used straight tomato sauce instead of the actual sauce. The worst food we have ever had. Do not order the chicken fajita salad. So greasy it isn't even funny. The beef burrito was just meat and nothing else. The Chile Relleno was soggy and not fried like it should be. The tamales tasted frozen.
