Passing through Kansas on I-70, I noticed some old billboards for Taco Grande saying the restaurant dates back to 1960. As we got near the exit in Hays, our hunger said, "stop and see what the place has to offer" so we did. It was a bit tricky to find as we only had the note from the signs: "near Home Depot" to work with, but it didn't take us too long. Funny thing: Yelp has a different address than our receipt. The address on our receipt is 113 E. 41st Suite A and a phone number: (785) 261-0655. The address here on YELP would be far from this location so I'd have to question the information listed here before going in search of this place. We ordered two "funny tacos" and two beef burritos to go. There were plenty of interesting things on the menu, but these items seemed like they would be hard to mess up. The aroma coming from the kitchen area was very enticing as we waited for our food. We headed back out to our RV parked on the road behind the restaurant to check out our goodies. We were NOT disappointed in any way. The lettuce, tomato and cheese on the tacos tasted fresh. The taco shells were soft for the soft ones and crispy for the crispy ones. AND the beef filling was nicely seasoned, yet still maintained the taste of freshly prepared beef. The two burritos contained a generous portion of the same beef mixed with cheese and they were all good to the last bite. After looking at some of the older reviews, I have to wonder at the mixture of good and bad, but if we lived in Hays, KS, we know where our tacos would be coming from on those days when you just have to have some tasty Mexican food. On a final note, the young man that took our order was friendly and patient with us as we asked several questions about some of the items on the menu. We'd never heard of "sanchos" or "funny tacos" and there were several other things that we didn't bother to ask about. He even gave us a discount of 10% since they didn't have a senior or military discount on their register. Overall, we were very happy with our meal and if we ever make it back to Hays, KS, we will be looking to repeat it. read more

I'm sad to have to write this review as someone who used to get a 10% discount for, embarrassingly, eating here so often under the original management but unfortunately I don't think it has maintained its quality of food. Taco shells are hard to chew, not light and crispy like they used to be. Beans are bland and flavorless, and not at all the same texture as they used to be. The cheese dip isn't the same at all. It used to have a thin texture and had a spicy kick to it. Now it's the same shiny plastic orange gunk you can get at any gas station. I hate it but I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

This is not a Restaurant I'd ever return to. Tacobell has better tasting food and ingredients than Taco Grande. Sadly I chose this place because who can say No to Tacos? Well anyways, the place was empty. Very quiet inside, 3 employees, one taking order, another peeping food and one guy sitting down bagging chips. These fellow were bored I assumed talking about race cars and a buddies car the night before. This was the first time I visited this place after moving to the area. I can say the restaurant was clean, empty and the ac worked. While watching them prepare my order To my surprise every thing was bagged like in sandwich style sacks and MICROWAVED. Each order had a premesured amount of {???} because it doesn't taste like chicken. . Now I had ordered 2 tacos and a Chicken Burrito. Chicken burrito ingredients beside the tortilla had a small amount of cheese and a microwaved sack of chicken. (I think) That's it.... Nothing else just two ingredients, I would have been better off microwaving a Tina's frozen burrito chummichangas. This microwaved chicken had a funny texture i believe from microwaving I think originally they cooked whole chickens in the microwave and pick it apart then sack the chicken, I don't even know if I can call it that as it so awful tasting and had a nasty texture much like boiled fish but chicken. I can see why they closed down the other locations as the food is trash. They sould do the community a favor and close this place too especially since the food really had no thought, flavor or even value for that matter. Save your money head to Taco Bell. If you could imagine an awesome dive fast food joint in the middle of the prairie that served Mexican-inspired food then you have just imagined Taco Grande. The food isn't exactly healthy, and that's not a negative, but it is amazingly addictive and hits the spot on some of those nights that run a little late. The menu has a bit of everything, but I would like to call your attention to the Funny Taco. It's a regular taco snuggled by a soft taco shell held together by some queso. Now, I'm pretty sure Taco Grande isn't the first place to offer a taco such as this, but they've perfected it. Get it to stay and then get some to go. If you need it delivered, they'll do that too. The food was really not good. The chips and hard taco shells were very stale. The chicken tacos had no flavor at all. The sancho had a slight sweet taste to begin with (strange for Mexican food) and then gave way to a very slight spicy burn that was almost pleasant. The nacho cheese came straight from a can and was cold. The cinnamon crispy dessert things were very stale. There were three young men working in the place, not a single other customer in the 6 o'clock hour on a Saturday evening which should have been the first clue, and only one of the young men made our food so it easily took him 15-20 minutes to make a taco dinner, a sancho dinner, 3 soft tacos, and 5 other tacos. I used to eat here once a week -it was owned by the same family for decades and during those decades, was a local favorite but it's changed hands a couple of times and now it's owned by another local guy who owns a burger joint downtown that is run in a similar fashion. He also owns a plumbing/heat/a/c business and is a slumlord so it's easy to see why things aren't going so good. This restaurant had another location that is closed down now and he's been talking on Facebook about his legal battle with the previous owner and they're going to open like 35 more of these places across the country. Seems that the portions get smaller every time I'm here but there's tons of lettuce so I guess that balances itself out, right? The food is OK a lot of the time but has never been as good as when those other people owned it...and that's why I"m only here once a month or so now. My food was cold today. Stopped in Hays as a half way point and decided to grab a quick taco. I grew up in Kansas and Taco Grande was always a favorite, however I've never experienced such slow service at a "fast" food establishment. We ordered at 12:35 and didn't get the order of 4 soft tacos til 1:12. It'd like to say it was packed but they only have a dozen tables to begin with. There's no reason with such a small menu and 4 employees that it should have taken 37 minutes to make tacos. The food wasn't bad but certainly not worth $17 and that kind of wait. read more

Ordered some tacos, beans were cold, no taco sauce was given. My mother in law had the taco salad, she was disappointed as well. She said the taco bowl sucked lol. OMG this place is worse than prison food. The beef is questionably not actual cow, the beans were dry as sand and the rice was brutal. The young blonde employee was not exactly inviting and cleaned under our feet AS WE ATE. Who does that? To top it off, she forgot the toy and snack for the two kids meals. The average age of the employees was 16 and they all acted like it. My recommendation, and I truly mean this, is to shut down and move on. What a $@*$ show. read more

Pretty cool little dive taco joint. I would of killed this place in college. Super quick food for pretty cheap. I had the funny taco because of the workers. They said it was the best and most popular thing. A hard shell taco inside of a soft shell with nacho cheese in between. It was good. I also had the grande dinner. With a choice of taco, burrito, or enchilada smother in cheese. I did a chicken burrito and it was very good. The chicken was tasty and tons of cheese. The rice was over spiced and not great and the beans were out of a can and average. Chips were spread over both sides. It's not gourmet food but it was good. read more

The best part of the meal was the guacomole because even the chips were stale. Hot salsa is not good at all. The beef inside the Sancho was not drained and was so greasy it seeped thru the main wrap, the outer wrap and into the paper bag. Went to the new Taco Grande by Home Depot. Food was generic, tasteless and over pprocessed. Enchilada sauce tasted like tomatoe sauce, cheese was fake. Horrible, will not be back. Been sick 2x since I ate it. Avoid, much better fast food in Hays. read more

This is NOT authentic mexican food, and it's certainly not gourmet, but it tastes awesome! I grew up eating here, and the flavor of the taco meat mixed with their sugary taco sauce is burned into my tongue's memory. Every time I come in here, the little guy who works behind the counter with dark hair and has the look of "I wish I was any place but here!" Could at least muster up a "hello or hi" when a paying customer comes up to the counter and says hi or hello to him. If you hate your job so much, then go back to school buddy or else don't be the cashier. The food is okay, but it's been tasting very chill powdery lately, and not so much Mexican. Every time I go to Taco Grande I get the same thing. I only like one thing on the menu and that is a funny taco. The times that I have tried something different I did not enjoy them. I went with my boyfriend three times and he got something completely different than me every time. He told me that he will never go back because of the way the food tasted. He said the food was dry and the texture of the meat was disgusting. My boyfriend's friend was also with us. He said that the sauce was atrocious. He also got supreme nachos. His exact words were "they tasted like dry grass with no taste." If you go during the lunch hour there are no spots to park because they have such a tiny parking lot. If the parking lot is full then the odds of you finding a seat is slim. read more
