The food was good. Service was excellent! Our server recommended the shredded chicken and all of us that ordered something with shredded chicken liked it. The red enchilada sauce was good but not spicy. My kids liked it a lot. Steak fajita quesadilla was also good. Everyone took great care to make sure we had a good experience. The owner (maybe? or maybe a great invested manager, but I got owner vibes) circulated to check on everyone's experience. This place stood up to the amount of time they've been open. Lot's of places to eat in Hayes, we like Mexican, so we went to Gutierrez Mexican Restaurant. It was getting near closing on a Thursday night, but we got seated right away and they took our orders. Lots of atmosphere, but a bit dark. That 32 oz lime Margarita was so good. We got served after a bit. My wife order the Chicken quesadilla and I ordered the Sancho Grande. The chips and dip were excellent. The Sancho Grande seemed to be a seasoned beef filled burrito smothered with red chile w/beef. Yes! PINTOS beans. Who likes black beans. Very busy, especially on Friday afternoon with a waiting list. Limited parking in the parking lot for the high number of guests. This is a local favorite. Ask for the hot sauce, which is a green salsa. Chips are thin and crispy. Nice, fresh flavor. The decor is nice. Roomy with multiple dining rooms. Bar area with space to eat at the bar. Gutierrez says they serve 'authentic Tex-Mex' and that's definitely what it is. You're not going to get true Mexican cuisine here, and there are other places in bigger cities where you'll get better Tex-Mex, but for Hays, Kansas this place is great- and definitely worth a stop when you're driving through. Complimentary chips & salsa were delicious- chips were warm and they serve both puréed and chunky salsas. They're both mild though- would've been nice to have some more heat. We ordered the queso too, and while it looked like it was straight out of a jar, it was very flavorful and better than many restaurant queso we've tried. My daughter & I shared the cheese quesadilla. Unfortunately it was dripping in oil, but after we used multiple napkins to soak it dry, we enjoyed it- the tortilla was perfectly toasty and it was absolutely filled with cheese. The guacamole served on the side was some of the best I've ever had- fresh and chunky and tasted like avocado. I hate when guac is loaded with onion and tomato. My mom really enjoyed her taco salad, except the edible bowl was a weird texture- I tried it and it just tasted off, like maybe it was undercooked. The desserts (fried ice cream and sopapillas, among them) were tempting, but we were stuffed from our appetizer and meal. The more things change the more they stay the same. Gutierrez is a Hays staple. It was here before I arrived and although it's undergone some renovations and redecorating, it's moving full steam ahead after I've been gone for some time. While the food may not exactly be authentic, it is really good. I tend to pig out on the pre-meal chips and salsa so I usually end up taking half of my meal home. It had been a bit, but this last trip was no different. There isn't much of a beer or cocktail list, but the margaritas, if you're into this sort of thing, are pretty good. It was good being back in the ole hood and it was even better dining at an old haunt. I can't wait to come back, which hopefully will be sooner than later. read more

We have been to Gutierrez many times as we live in Hays. In the past we have received excellent service. We went for the first time in about 1 year tonight and we will never be going back. Although their food is okay (Husband really likes it, I think it's okay), and their Mango Martini is heaven, the service was so incredibly poor, I was about to throw my water across the room and make a scene. Luckily we left before I had the chance. Here are the things we didn't like: -They use to have a drink menu, they threw the old ones away to bring in new ones, however they didn't make the new ones before they threw the old ones away. This makes it very difficult to order drinks, wouldn't you say. -We went in around 7:30, they close at 9:00. Plenty of time to eat, however they were sweeping (with those loud carpet sweeper/rolling vacuum's) and we would have to stop our conversation until they left. We ended up leaving around 8:10, while 2-3 of them were "rolling vacuuming" around us...so rude. Obviously, they wanted us out. -Our waitress also had issues, too. She was short, unfriendly and generally unpleasant. It felt like we were a huge burden to her. We were out celebrating a big event in our lives and were treated with disrespect and rudeness. I gave this one star, because there isn't food good enough on the planet to make me want to subject myself to such poor service. Needless to say, we will never be back. read more

Been eating at Gutierrez's for 30 years and even though I don't live in Hays anymore, I crave their hombres and salsas. Their frozen margaritas are great too! Save your money don't come here. Food tasted like it was in a bag for days then microwaved. Ordered "fajitas" and the serving was so small that I left feeling as hungry as when I came in. Embarrassing. The only good authentic "mexican" thing served here are the Coronas. read more

Gutierrez is probably my favourite place to eat in Hays. The food is not strictly authentic but is always fresh, flavoursome and filling. Their margaritas are very good - made from scratch and they are cheap - although I recommend them over ice rather than blended. I especially like their Chimichangas which are crispy but not too greasy. Generally, solid-good service from wait-staff. My main complaint is that along with the obligatory cheesy decor the place can be a bit dingy at times especially over lunch when a bit of daylight is always appreciated! Overall, I recommend - good food (especially for small town Hays) at a reasonable price. I have yet to be disappointed. read more

This was a good place several years ago. I don't know what has happened. Last few times I ordered here it sucks. Chips were not fresh. I got Chili Con Queso instead of what I ordered, Queso Blanco. Cheese enchilada had some kinda weird stuff in it. How can they mess up a cheese enchilada? I am done here. I will go to "Cancun" or "El Dos De Oros" from now on. read more

Went to restaurant for bachelorette party with party of 7. Hostess was very rude stating it would be 20 minute wait. When asked if we could sit at bar she said we do t have that many chairs. When another staff member came to smooth the issue over original hostess was very rude to co worker in front of guests. I love Gutierrez!!! I go to Gutierrez frequently because it's a nice place to eat with a great staff!!! (I know because I use to work there!) 2 types of great salsa & cheese dip! There are several Mexican places in town and this is (I think) the better one. But they charge a bit more and get more business. The atmosphere: comfortable, casual with dining area, bar area (next to dining) and off the front a coffee bar. The table can be a bit cramped depending on where you sit, but you can usually move. The menu is a fairly classic mexican fare. I have had the chimichanga and it is the best one I have had. Queso is a bit spicy. The guacamole is really good (but serving is small). The chips are great and fresh. The tacos were good, recently but a bit overpriced and they had too much cheese on them and it was greasy. They tell you what is spicey if you ask so you can make a decision on what works for you. My companion had the beef and bean burrito and it had tons of grease on it (they ate half). The drinks are good although pricey as well. I recently went in for just coffee and desert. GREAT! I may have to change this to a five based on that. Their fried ice cream is the best I have had. Wonderful! Coffee is good too! Wow...still thinking of that ice cream: just the right combo of cinnamon, cold vanilla ice cream, a touch of chocolate, whipped cream and some cone sticks. YUM! Service is good. They come back on a fairly regular basis and check on you. Plenty of parking areas. My recommendation: if you want a casual good mex meal, go here, but take your MONEY. read more
