The answer to the eternal question: Will one taco be enough?? Too many places around here charge $4+ for an itty bitty precious little taco, so when I'm really hungry, I'll need at least two. When I just need a quick, simple, filling something, my budget is about $5. I've driven past this place for years, but never at the right time to stop in. Finally, I pulled in the other day. I'd skipped lunch and dinner was hours away, so I ordered one Street Taco. Not only was it enough, it was excellent. The steak, the seasoning, the onions, the avocado, even the salsa...everything was Just Right. I also loved the feel of the place, kinda funky, creative, and friendly. Like Austin at its best. I'll be back. I may even go crazy and order MORE THAN ONE! read more

Breakfast extraordinaire. Call me amazing huge breakfast tacos. You can order and add what you'd like. Really good coffee wonderful Mexican music, Mexican colors and the ambience. Beautiful large portions extremely reasonable price. Different choices of sauces. Homemade and the chorizo. It is locally made and purchased. Not too spicy just perfect. Mexico! This is my go-to breakfast taco restaurant, I've tried many different breakfast tacos all around Austin. Taco Joint is one of the only taco shops, I keep coming back to. I ordered one potato, bacon, egg and cheese taco and two potato, bean, and cheese tacos with chipotle salsa on the side. I liked how the bacon was so flavorful, the crispy potatoes gave the tacos a satisfying crunch, the eggs were creamy, and the tortillas were soft and fresh. The ingredient distribution is perfect and size of the tacos were extremely satisfying at a reasonable price point (around 16$ including an extra ingredient, a tip and two extra salsas). The salsa is almost drinkable it's so good, this restaurant consistently serves great quality food. The people who own this place are so kind and quick with their service. I strongly recommend trying this place especially if you love breakfast tacos like I do. read more

Taco Joint has always been one of my go-to places for lunch tacos. I usually go for their most popular items: the street and fish tacos. They are great! The steak, egg, gouda cheese taco is pretty awesome too if you're a fan of delicious cheese. This time to switch things up I got the shrimp taco ($4.25), which had good flavor, and the loaded nachos ($7.95). The nachos really surprised me, because they were packed with flavor and crunch, a bit of a kick from the jalapeño peppers, and tasty chunks of meat. My friend and I dusted it. Indoor seating is okay, but the place is a bit small. There's some outdoor seating too. Plenty of parking around the restaurant. I'll be back to either this one or the San Jac location! read more

Ok. First off the tacos are huge. I made the unfortunate mistake of ordering three and chips and queso and I could not finish them all. The tacos are a good price and a good size. Highly recommend the fish - fried of course with chipotle salsa! Chips are fresh! Pro-tip: bag of chips is huge! Enough for mor than 4 ppl. read more

So... many... taco... restaurants. I've been putting it off but now it's time to start my Austin reviews, starting with the very first (actually second cuz we had breakfast tacos) taco spot. The verdict- pretty damn good. I'm gonna give them 4-stars, not because they aren't delicious, but similar to other cities that specialize in a type of cuisine (BBQ in Memphis, pizza in NYC, etc.), I'm grading on a serious curve here. This would be 10 stars if this place was in NYC... Anyways, I think they would make the top 10 cut for Austin tacos which is really saying something. But for my purposes it's 4 stars... read more

Taco Joint is awesome!!! On a weekend trip to Austin, I noticed this place was right across the street from me. The reviews looked good so I gave it a shot, and I'm so glad I did! I came in around 11:30am on a Friday and seemingly beat the lunch time rush. I ordered 3 tacos (Street Taco, Potato & Egg, Bacon & Egg with beans added) and each taco was delicious. My personal favorite was the street taco - oh me oh my! The service was also exceptional as Olivia was incredibly friendly and helpful when I was placing my order. I'm not in Austin much but the next time I'm back I will DEFINITELY be back at Taco Joint! read more

So many to choose from and this business is vegan friendly. I decided to get the Torta Ale to try something different. Wholly!!!! The dish was flavorful, had texture, and love the fresh ingredients. I visited a taco spot this morning for breakfast and enjoyed two migas and a potato-bean taco, paired with organic mint-flavored yerba mate. The potato-bean combination was a bit odd, but the migas were excellent and definitely worth trying. Since we're vegetarians, we opted for corn tortillas instead of wheat. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite and had read some good things about Taco Joint so I decided to give it a try. Good amount of outdoor seating as well as some indoor tables. Staff was also very friendly. I tried the street taco (comes with beef) and the potato/egg/cheese breakfast taco here. The street taco was HUGE! Not what I would normally expect from a street taco. Also got it on a flour tortilla today although I usually prefer corn. The meat itself wasn't particularly flavorful, but it was pretty tender. The potato/egg/cheese was alright. The potatoes were a bit mushy and had pretty minimal seasoning. The eggs were a bit dry and there was a lot of it. Luckily, the salsa here is pretty good and saved both of the tacos. Overall, good quantity, but less than great tacos. read more

This is a must-try taco spot in Austin and my only complaint is that they aren't open for more hours during the day. It's pretty hard to find time during the work week to swing by, but it makes for a great weekend lunch after a short stroll around Lady Bird. I've only ordered the lunch tacos, but I'd imagine that the breakfast tacos and tortas are great too. Two or three of these tacos should hold you over until dinner. El 4/20: beef carnitas stewed in guisadito sauce, sprinkled w/ shoestring papitas. The thin potato fries were a bit pale so I thought they might be soggy and limp, but I was pleasantly surprised they were still crispy. While the stewed meat was beefy and not dry, I did feel like this taco was lacking some balance - it didn't come with a wedge of lime but luckily I had some extra salsa verde. Fish Taco (Fried): fried fish topped w/ honey lime cabbage slaw, cilantro, cotija cheese. This is probably the best fish taco I've had to-date. The batter manages to stay crispy, and the slaw adds just the right amount of creaminess, acidity, and crunch. Squeeze some extra lime on and it's a perfect bite. Street Taco: grilled sirloin, caramelized onion, avocado, cilantro, queso fresco. Really can't go wrong with these classic flavors. It's much larger than a typical street taco, but I guess everything is bigger in Texas. Overall, just a great taco spot that I look forward to visiting every time I'm in Austin. Homemade tortillas, salsas, and decent portions - what else can you ask for? read more

Quite an affordable place, which makes sense since it's right off the UT Austin campus. There's a general lot in front as well as street parking on the other side of the street, with a permitted lot a couple minutes away -- all of which were full when we got here just after noon. When we finally made it inside, we had the Portabella Fajita taco ($3.95) and the El Tree Hugger taco ($3.95), both of which were quite flavorful. Each taco comes with one complimentary sauce container, and their habanero is worth getting. Definitely a diner vibe inside and it might be hard to get a table unless it's an off hour. read more

Solid tacos, very tasty, nothing fancy. They say they make their own flour tortillas. One was a bit hard but the other was better. Attached is a pic of the migas taco - I just wish it had a bit more pico/cilantro. Also had egg, potato and cheese which was tasty. Friendly service. Will return! read more

Okay so I've had the breakfast tacos here and they were delicious. Some of the best in Austin frankly. Today I saw the tortas on the lunch menu. They piqued my interest for sure. I ordered the "Mexicano" and there are no regrets! It's a very generous steak torta on a fresh baked mexican style roll. fresh lettuce, beans, tomato, avocado and your choice of 5 or so custom hot sauces ( i got the avocado and it was delicious) . The guy that handed me my torta possesses a mysterious wisdom behind his eyes. Dude has nothing to prove and is obviously aware that this is a torta of the highest quality. I call this look "the knowing" and there are no words needed. While greedily consuming this delicacy I could hear the ceaseless chopping coming from the kitchen. It warmed my soul as it's reminiscent of many of the finest taquerias I've discovered far and wide throughout my life. Needless to say: I was delighted and will be back. Great value at $9! read more

Although we live closer to the other Taco Joint location, we made the drive to this one for their Torte Ale. Ah, the Torta Ale! Breaded beef milanesa, avo, pico, cotija cheese, lettuce, pinto bean spread & ranchero mayo served on a telera roll, with a side of plantain chips. The fried breaded beef is done well, not a hint of grease remains. It's an enormous sandwich. They serve it cut in half. Each half is basically the size of a regular burger. If you're hungry, it's a very satisfying meal. If you're not, it's a very satisfying two meals. I have a friend who swears by the La Ahogada torta. We'll try that next. read more

Nice little hole in the wall taco shop. I went late at night and they had the outdoor heaters going (felt amazing). Ended up ordering a strawberry marg (4.50?) , nachos (7.99), and 4 of their specialty tacos (3.99 each). Not exaggerating, the nachos alone could have fed 2 people.... not to say I didn't eat everything. Food was delicious, seemed truly authentic, and pretty good prices for austin. Also didn't expect this place to have margs which was a huge plus. I will for sure be returning ! read more

These tacos are not recommended, bland egg & chorizo. The potato was ok. Now the (corn)tortillas are literally some of the worst in Austin I've ever had not handmade what soever Will not be returning. Great taco spot a little outside of downtown. Parking was plentiful (and free!) and there were a lot of tables. Me and a coworker stopped here for a quick lunch, wanting to avoid the downtown parking situation. It was pretty busy at lunch time, but the line moved well. Even though it was super busy, all my food came out pretty quickly ! I got the El Senor Crocket, El 4/20, and the Street Taco. Each of them tasted delicious and the salsa was good with it! The meats especially were so tasty in each of the tacos. They have a lot of options for breakfast tacos and I'm seeing a lot of great reviews for them. I'll be back to try them next time! read more

1st of all, I love the El senor crocket, the 1st one on the menu. I think it is tasted better than the popular street taco which is little bit dry to me. The waiter is very nice and patient to answer questions and introduce options even though we went during lunch time and there was a long line. The vegetarian options we bought were ok. My friend wasn't enjoying much. read more

Ambiance: 3 Had to knock off for lack of cleanliness but it's typical of what you'd expect from casual restaurants like this. Pretty cramped and a bit loud when it gets busy. There's some outdoor seating as well. Food: 5 I love LOVE LOVE the tacos here so much! I highly recommend you also try the chicken tortilla soup as well (Value!!) They fill it up with chicken and TONS of tortilla chips so every single bite is loaded with chicken, chips, and avocado. The tacos are made fresh and super cheap&authentic. What else could you possibly want? Service: 5 All in all, I would say that the service here is typically very quick and they are very helpful when it comes to whatever you need (you can take leftovers to-go, you just have to ask them for another bag for your leftovers). read more

I've driven by El Alma many times being in the Austin area, but I never went until last Thursday, and after surviving a brief monsoon, I was glad to get a few drinks and eat some good TexMex with my large party just before a wedding. The best way to describe El Alma is that it is TexMex that is Austinified. Everything feels a little more unique and special than your classic TexMex options. I started off with a Mezcal Margarita that put a little hair on my chest and got me going. My group ordered two of their Nachitos, which were these nice nachos. For my main entrée, I got 3 Al Pastor tacos on corn with a side of their rice and beans. Their pastor was served with pineapples, onions, and cilantro with limes on the side. They were great and I immediately crushed them all. I thought their rice and beans were pretty good as well and a step above the typical TexMex rice and beans. The server was pretty attentive throughout our whole visit, and I honestly have no complaints about what they had to offer. Pricing on the meal and drinks was pretty standard for Austin, and I didn't think anything really took me out of the experience. On top of that, for being in Barton Springs, there is quite a bit of parking. I would love to come back at some point in the future and hang out on their rooftop bar because that seems like a lot of fun. Be sure to hand the ticket to one of the cooks; otherwise you won't get your food. We got the carne asada tacos, adobada (pastor) taco, and carne asada volcan. Everything was seriously delicious, rich, and flavorful. The meat was juicy and tender, and they were very generous with the portions. If all the seats inside are taken inside the restaurant, you can dine in the bar area or outside in the alley. This taco speakeasy spot is so good, we came back the next day with our friends. They even have kitchen staff whose sole job is to make tortillas so they're always fresh, which shows their attention to detail. The service is always delightful - with thoughtful, charming, and considerate front of the house staff and, I'm certain, hardworking, proficient back of the house. The place is beautiful and the ambiance is perfect for anything from happy hour drinks to a special occasion. I brought my mom here for Mother's Day and we had a terrific time. I will absolutely continue celebrating every special occasion here.

For our main dish, we split the vegetable Enchiladas de Mole Poblano, served with rice and black refried beans. I wish the enchiladas had more vegetables. Everything on the plate was outstanding, and I truly think they have the best mole in town--rich, complex, and unforgettable. We were also celebrating a friend's birthday, and the staff made it extra special by surprising her with a complimentary Tres Leches cake, which was just as amazing as everything else we had.
