What is there to say about this iconic Greenville restaurant? Taco Casa is like the polarizing food item cilantro - people are either disgusted by it or they love it. There is actually a website devoted to hating cilantro, creatively called IHateCilantro.com. This place used to be called Taco Cid years ago, but not much has really changed. In fact, 37 years ago they had all you can eat tacos for $5 so my brother and I had an eating contest that ended in a draw at 19 hard shell tacos apiece. That was brutal. I had a lunch plate special that included a tamale, a cheese sauce enchilada, a tostada with lettuce meat and refried beans, a taco and then a tostada like thing with just beans and melted cheese. The taco was good for a straight out, plane Jane, Taco Bell-ish taco. The rest was something to fill up on to keep the hunger pains down until dinner. The price for a lunch special, including 16 ounce drink is $5.35. Mine was closer to $7.00. This is cash only. It was lunch and it was crowded, but food is served up quickly. There is absolutely no resemblance to any of the better (food wise) taco places in town. If you read my review last weekend of Greer Tacos located in the Barnyard Flea Market, of all places, you will get an idea of a great taco. The reason this place has been around for decades is the fairly large portions for the price, the quick service, and that it has a cult following. I bet canned Green Giant asparagus has a cult following too, for some reason. Taco Casa is like that. Think of canned asparagus and think about why does it still exist? Someone, or plenty of someone's grew up eating that asparagus and never appreciated fresh asparagus because it doesn't taste "right." In this case, "right" being what you are used to, what you grew up with, and what you have come to enjoy as your standard for asparagus. Or, cheap Mexican food. Substitute that into my previous sentence. I think you get the idea from reading the reviews that it is either loved or hated. Personally, there are too many better options even if this is a Greenville icon. read more

Taco casa is truly the GEM of the south. When I visited them, the thought I couldn't get out of my mind was that this was the Mexican food version of the original McDonald's. Very clean, unbelievable service, and insane efficiency, with the best bean and cheese burritos in the entire world. And their prices are so reasonable. Love the variety of sauces available. First time at Taco Casa tonight. I'm a latino from Texas and my eyebrow went up when I walked into the place and there's not a Latino in sight. You see, in Texas there's a place called Taco Casa - same sign, same font.... this is NOT that place. I'm telling you, don't be fooled. A local told me their best item are the nachos. We ordered both beef and chicken tacos, beef and cheese nachos, and a cheese quesadilla for the kid ($14 total). Tacos were trash... worse than Taco Bell. The meat ... IS it meat? I want to start off by saying that I know this place has been in business for years. I dined in one time maybe back in 2004 and it was ok. My son who loves tacos wanted to try so we went in today to get take out. Staff was very friendly and they were quick to get our order ready. I had the chicken taco and burrito with rice and beans. Husband had the red tacos and my son regular tacos with plain beef. My chicken was dry- tasteless. Beans were tasty- rice reminded me of the Spanish rice my mom made growing up. It was moist but a little spicy. My son wasn't impressed with the flavor of the beef. He said it didn't taste like anything and was dry. My husband had no complaints about his food and was satisfied. This definitely was not my favorite thing to eat. I guess I've had too much authentic Mexican food and so this doesn't rate up there with the flavor. It's just basic and I honestly wasn't impressed, but the fact it's been opened for years and always packed will beat my review any day. All I am trying to say here is don't try to compare it to authentic Mexican flavored food because you'll be disappointed. Taco Casa isn't a high end traditional Mexican restaurant. It's also not simple fast food. The service is fast, and any dinner combo will fill your belly for hours. I like the Number 3 best. It's a place I've frequented since 1992. Everytime I hit Greenvile, I "Wanna Casa". It's not pretending to be anything, it's literally an American diner doing their take on Mexican food. Now you can argue that, but there's one thing I love about Casa. They make everything like they made it 20+ years ago. Can tastebuds be nostalgic? Great service, OK prices but the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. This review is for the food only, not for the staff. You know when you open a can of dog food for your pet and you get a bit of the aroma and that awful taste in your mouth? I had the Tuesday Special, a hard beef taco and a Big Red (I think that's what it was called), and a blueberry empanada. I ate half of the Big Red and couldn't stop thinking it tasted like dog food. So I tried the hard taco (usually my favourite). I ate half of the taco and it had the same gross dog food taste. I think it's whatever they are using for beef, or perhaps to season the beef. I then decided to give up on the meal and tried the blueberry empanada. It too was terrible. The filling was just normal blueberry pie filling and was ok, but the crust portion was truly awful. Maybe it's the oil they used to deep fry the empanadas? At least it didn't taste like dog food. It was just yucky tasting. On a positive note, I ordered a side of sour cream and the taste and quality of this was excellent. Really sorry for the bad review, especially as your staff members are so nice and friendly, but I've never NOT eaten my Mexican food before. People seem to have great affection for this place because they've been eating here since the 80's when there were apparently few if any real Taco shops in Greenville. This place is a Greenville institution and one of the only places where you can still get a quality lunch for under $10. The owners are some of the kindest and best people you will ever meet, and there is a community of regulars that enjoy it (sometimes) every day! My favorite item is the Taco El Grande, but you really can never go wrong with the Daily Lunch Special. Taco Casa is our favorite fast food Mexican restaurant! The food is made fresh every day. They fry there own corn shells. The owner (Mike) and his son (Mike, Jr) are usually the ones making your order. They are very fast! It's a family atmosphere and we've gotten to know many people there who are regulars. Many families have gatherings there for lunch. Their empanada dessert is to die for, excellent, par none! If you visit for the first time and the line is long, don't worry, it will move very quickly. My co-worker mentioned a few times about how good Taco Casa was and given the right time and right place, I found myself eating lunch Taco Casa. First impression was skepticism. The parking lot is a bit of a death trap. There are very few actual parking spots and if we didn't find an actual spot, I'm not sure what we would have done. I'm not trying to be offensive here but when we entered Taco Casa, I found no actual Mexican people working here. All employees were Caucasian. Not a good sign for a Mexican restaurant. However, even with a lack of Mexican employees, my order came out quickly. I ordered the lunch special and for a Wednesday which was a super burrito and a taco that came with a drink. Total price was approximately $5.50. The food felt so inexpensive that if I were still hungry, I could order some more. My order came out quickly which was awesome. After my burrito and taco however, I was no hungry. Next came the salsa bar. The first row of all salsa was mild and the second row of salsa was "hot". I tried multiple hot salsas and to me, they all tasted the same. Even one said "Habanero" but everything was still the same. Realistically, the food tasted like an Americanized version of Mexican food. I'd prefer authentic but you can't beat the price. Like most reviews, I confirm they only take cash. Initially, I assumed this place was a "tax crime in progress" but after my receipt showed exactly what I ordered, I assumed the cash only situation was how they kept overall prices down not having to pay credit card (CC) expenses. I enjoyed my first visit and learned quite a bit. If I want any hot sauce flavor, I have to bring my own. I'm actually looking forward to my next visit here. read more

I really don't mean to discredit other's opinions but this place is terrible. I went there for the first time when I had a group of friends from out of town over. I thought it would be a fun place to try out and we all like Mexican food. Well this place is more like a high school cafeteria. It is almost like they just buy Taco Bell kits from the grocery store and serve that. I guess I can see this place as maybe a cool hang out for high school kids because it was very inexpensive.
