What a surprise! We were expecting a bit of Latin in the strip mall off Woodruff and got A LOT of it. I had glanced at the menu on the way there but didn't realize how extensive it was. Our waiter was a superstar- in talking with him he shared he was from Ecuador and made suggestions for our lunch choice. We started with the beef and chicken empanadas- very good- and an order of maduros- ripe plantains. We should have stopped there because I was almost full at that point. For our entrees we chose shrimp mofongo- which we really see in small cities being that it is the national dish of Puerto Rico- and the paella for one. Both were wonderful. I would argue that the size of the paella should be be renamed as a lid of a trashcan serving. It was giant and we barely put a dent in it before asking for a to go box. What a great find for Latin food! The mofongos were delicious--very close to the ones I had in Puerto Rico. The only thing I'd change is using fresh-caught shrimp to give it more of that seaside flavor. The whole red snapper with coconut sauce was also full of flavor. We really enjoyed the mango and guava juices, and the tres leches dessert was amazing! Definitely a highlight of the meal. A great place for Latino food!!! We came here Wednesday night and found out that it's ladies night, which means all margaritas are 50% off! What a deal! We definitely took advantage of it. We started with two appetizers - fried green plantain and chorizo queso dip with chips (they're both on the happy hour menu). We ordered Roasted Mojo Pork Mofongo with Trifongo (mixed mashed sweet plantain, green plantain and yuca). This is my first time trying mofongo and it was amazing. It's very flavorful and the pork was a bit crunchy and juicy. I loved trifongo. We also tried Cuban Beef Bowl that comes with beef stew, cabbage, beans, corn, rice, etc. The portion was big and it's packed with flavors. This is one of my favorites in the area and brought several friends this time. Hard to pass up yuca frita with yummy garlic mojo. For my entree, I got the shrimp trifongo which was good. The plantains were really ripe, so it made the trifongo pretty sweet overall; not a bad thing, but wasn't expecting that. The garlic sauce was really yummy which tamed down the sweetness. Welp, went here based off a review by word of mouth and it was a fail. As a Puerto Rican, the food was flavorless. The shrimp tasted just like tomato sauce, the beans tasted like soap. The mofongo was alright, but have definitely had better. More lemony than garlic. Left 50%+ of both meals uneaten. Honestly, the salad was the best part outside of the drinks. Wish I could say it was as good as some of the other reviews but not sure that we'd be back. Chips with cilantro garlic sauce given to us as the server forgot about us at one point after ordering drinks. I ordered lunch with the three seafood tacos, Mahi-Mahi, fried shrimp, and grilled shrimp. And to drink I had the Guava juice and water. The two shrimp tacos were phenomenal, just enough flavor and sweetness with not too much cabbage. But, the mahi-mahi taco was a bit on the dry side. If I ate it first it could have been better. Wowzers! I don't know what marinated that rib eye in but holy moly! It was the juiciest piece of meat ever! Jeremy was our server and the kid is genuine, efficient and friendly. I came here with a friend who really wanted to try this place. The restaurant is smaller than I thought but we got sat right away. You can tell that there were a lot of regulars here. We sat at a two top by the bar. The server was friendly but she was a little slow and not very attentive. We started off with the yuca fries. They came out piping hot with a delicious dipping sauce. It was my first time trying yuca fries. My friend has had them plenty of times and said she didn't really care for them. I got the El Burro. It was good but on the smaller end and came out lukewarm. My friend got the tacos combination and thought they were good. The rice and beans were good and came with a generous portion. I'm glad they are opening up a different location. Actually the same stewed pork they put on the Cuban sandwich. Service was ok. Hope they had an off night but I'm guessing that people just accept this as Latin food. It was Honey's birthday and wanted to catch up since he was gone for a week cycling across NC but needed food that has gluten free and try something new. Last week when friends and I were going to eat out, I used Yelp to look at places to eat and this one popped up along with the one we ate at. I was asking Honey which side did he want to face (toward or away from window) and she assumed we wanted to move which we did end up moving closer to the back / kitchen. Lots of choices, drinks, etc but we normally drink water and had another event that night so definitely kept water. But Eva went to bring water while we looked over menu. There are many GF options and clearly marked. But needed to know if DF (dairy free) due to allergies. She was great to check with the chef. He ordered the Latin style meatball and I ordered the Ropa Vieja Cubana aka beef brisket thinking he could have that too as I actually had breakfast only 2 hours prior. Flavors were good but probably because we had fresh burgers the night before that our son made and were absolutely tasty, I may have been beefed out. I normally don't like brisket as I think it can be dry. The sauce was good but my dish and his didn't wow us. The rice and bean side dish was absolutely fantastic! We couldn't even come close to finishing, and Eva brought a box and even offered a bag so if the sauce would leak but we assured that it would be laid flat. Food: generously giving 3 stars My daughter had Ropa Vieja which was flavorful just not as warm as it should have been. Three of us had black beans and rice; rice was mushy like it had too much water added during the cooking process, the black beans were not warm and also not seasoned well. My husband and I both had beef pastelon. I am very familiar with this dish, it's something I cook often and this was not pastelon it was a flavorless picadillo. Pastelon resembles a plantain lasagna this was pieces of fried sweet plantains with unseasoned ground beef and the most ridiculous amount of mozzarella cheese on top of it, you could tell it wasn't even heated all the way through because I picked off the cheese and under the melted layer it was still shredded. The meat had no type of seasoning, absolutely no type of Sofrito, which again I am very familiar with these dishes and how to make Sofrito; I am Puerto Rican, and this is very commonly used in our foods. I don't know who they have cooking, but they need adobo and sofrito. We ordered Tostones and they were fine. No one had any idea of what mojo was, but the server did his best trying to find something similar. Maybe this was a one off based on the other reviews on here. I wish I would have taken pictures, but our family was just really hungry and started eating right away. I'm writing this review not to bring negative light to this establishment but for them to be aware and make the necessary changes this place has the potential to be great because of the people they have working there. My local Greenville SC friends came & picked me up for dinner on a Sunday October evening and they decided on Soforito Latin restaurant nearby the Hilton Garden Inn. I was up for anything really. I had authentic Mexican before but Latin cuisine. My friend explained it to be a fusion of sorts with Mexican being a heavy favorite with flavor. With what I had done in South Carolina the day before this experience at Soforito, it was definitely nice to be able to relax and celebrate friends, good food, and accomplishments. We arrived here around 6pm on a brisk Sunday October 2022. The ambiance was good and lively even for Sunday. We were seated almost immediately, which was nice to not have to wait around for a table to become available. My friends and I grabbed a booth near the entrance and service began when our server greeted us at our table. For drinks, I ended up having a corona. For the main entree, the paella sounded really good since I haven't had that since Covid began. I had that paella, which was awesome anyway and my friends had vegetarian wet burritos. They also shared some plantains and something that tasted like French fries but seemed to be made from another member of the potato family. It was quite good. I also ordered a Soforito burger to go, which I ended up eating it for breakfast mid flight to Kansas City the next morning. The overall experience here at the Soforito Latin restaurant was pretty chill. I loved the ambiance and the service was typical And friendly at the same time. The company and conversation was enjoyable and the food was delicious. Definitely worth coming here even when I was thinking of a steakhouse or Indian food at the time. The prices here were adequate with what many other restaurants are usually charging. With $10-$14 for entrees, best bet is to come here during happy hour if they have one and enjoy yourself to the fullest. I spent $40 here for 2 entrees and a beer, which isn't bad. For the most part though, the experience was good and took about 1 hr or so. To thank my friends in advance for taking me to the airport the next morning, I treated them to ice cream at the nearby Cold Stone Creamery to end the evening. Who doesn't love Cold Stone Creamery? As far as parking options go, this restaurant is apart of a larger shopping center, so you're good with the parking generally speaking. Best bet would be to come here early enough to secure the desired parking spot before lunch or dinner rush comes in. If you're using public transportation options, best to consider and consult the Greenville public transportation authority to confirm which bus routes are applicable to get you here. Regardless of how you get here, do get here. The vibe is good and the drinks are flowing. I know I had a good time with my friends here at soforito in Greenville South Carolina. I've eaten here a couple of times and both were great experiences. On my first visit, I tried the trifongo - made with ripe and green plantains and yucca as well. It was fantastic! I haven't eaten much mofongo, so I'm not sure what the added yucca brings to the dish, but whatever it is it tastes great! Second time around, I had the roasted pork bowl and the grilled steak salad for my wife. Both were very good, good portion sizes and great accompaniments... but I was left wishing I'd ordered the trifongo again instead. Nothing against the other dishes... just that the trifongo was that good! On both occasions, I had a caipirinha cocktail - which I order whenever I see it on a menu, although I'm never quite sure that I'm pronouncing it correctly. Being Puerto Rican I'm always interested to see what's authentic or taste authentic. This place was great, the food came out fast VERY FAST! Everything was delicious . We're visiting from out of town and this is the bff's choice restaurant in the area. It's no wonder why! The food is elevated with harmonizing flavors. Adding to it the attentive and personable staff, you have a winning ingredients for a restaurant. I wanted something light and chose the "Fisherman's Choice" which is the choice fish of the day and varies. The fish happened to be salmon this visit. Salmon is a delicate flavor, but this dish highlighted it with a well-balanced tomato sauce and even cook. The tomato sauce was not too acidic and enhanced with the addition of olive oil. It is obvious the restaurant was created out of experience and care. The attention to details and decor are all there. (The art work on the wall stands out and draws you in with color and joy.)
