Mexico Grill & Bar - Tacos Al Pastor (pork)

Our server got us beverages and took…read moreour order right away, and the kitchen prepared our meals in just the right amount of time so that we could "enjoy" our chips, salsa and cheese dip. The enjoy in quotations is because what would have been a five star experience was knocked down due to the chips and salsa. The salsa was blah but still bordered on overly sweet, and the chips were funky. I mean they were so funkadelic that they tainted our enjoyment of the cheese sauce, and by all that is holy in the Cheesehead state, you don't detract from cheesy deliciousness with sketchy chips. So Mexico Grill & Bar, fix that flaw. Now, I had the Azteca Special and my husband went with the Burrito Fiesta. Both had the right perfection of flavor and were decimated: no to-go boxes needed. My husband also had fried ice cream for dessert. It's been years since he's had a proper fried ice cream that's actually deep fried that he almost cried with delight when they brought it to him. He devoured it in no time.

Chips and salsa were warm and just needed a good sprinkling of salt. I had the California special which included grilled chicken and shrimp with LOTS of veggies (carrots, squash, broccoli, mushrooms, and onions) in a cheese sauce and rice. The chicken and shrimp were beautifully seasoned and tender, not overcooked and dry. The salad was crisp with more fresh crunchy veggies and a nice sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Hubby had a steak and cheese quesadilla. Lots of cheese (see photo of cheese pull) and savory fajita steak. Service was thoughtful and had frequent checks for more water or any need we may have had. Atmosphere was friendly with lots of customers. We didn't have a wait even though we got there around noon. We will definitely return and plan on trying more options.

I was expecting $35 but was charged $44 for two items: Belt Buster burger ($23.95) and a Taco Salad ($8.95). These were the prices on their menu that was posted on their website. I don't understand why I was over charged and never for a receipt. Basically, everything seemed overpriced mediocre food based on the two items i purchased. I was expecting guacamole and refried beans with the taco salad. Both were omitted. It was just washed romaine lettuce, topped with taco seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, cheese, with sour cream and salsa on the side. So basic. Where's the onion? The shell wasn't a hard-shell crispy tortilla. Instead, it was a semi-fried flour tortilla. The ratio of lettuce to toppings. So much more lettuce and it made the bottom of the shell so soggy. The size of the Belt Buster burger was impressive and the meat patties were cooked well but that was it. The meat wasn't seasoned and toppings were lacking. It's a nice item to buy once or for fun and that's it. Would I return? Probably not. I think I would rather spend that money on groceries and ingredients to make my own food that would not only taste better but also is budget friendly.

They don't bring chips and salsa unless your dish comes with them. Thankfully, my dish did. Chips are served warm. They only needed a little salt. Not homemade but good. The salsa was very finely prepared with NO chunks. It has a little spice on the backend. Hubby ordered a quesadilla (large) and fries. Only the large quesadilla comes with a potato side. He chose fajita beef. I ordered the three tostadas meal with rice and beans. I chose one of each: steak, chicken, and ground beef. Our food came very fast! Hubby's quesadilla was quite cheesy as you can tell by the picture of the cheese pull. Very basic flavor though, nothing special about the steak. Fries were a frozen "meatier" French fry. My tostadas were crispy and fresh with cool veggies on top of the meat and beans. Nice big slices of avocado under the Parmesan cheese. The ground beef was my favorite of the three flavors. Rice and beans were run of the mill. Our server was very kind and attentive. We told her that it was our first time and she offered suggestions and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu. For an early Friday evening (Black Friday), there were a handful of tables of patrons. It seemed clean and nicely decorated. Not sure that we'd return for their Mexican food but they serve other ethnicities of food and also serve breakfast all day.

The onion rings lacked flavor, and the wings weren't crispy at all. We tried two different wing flavors, but they were so bland that I honestly can't even remember which ones we ordered. The sauces didn't add much either. On top of that, the sweet potato fries were disappointing--some weren't even fully cooked and were still cold in the middle. This would be a nice spot to stop for some drinks or refreshments while enjoying the lake, but for food, I'd look elsewhere.

Didn't try my mom's chicken entree, but her asparagus was so tough she could barely cut it with a knife and after taking a bite she didn't eat any more. My husband wished the crust on his pizza was thicker/puffier; I had a slice and thought the spice factor was just right but you could taste the crust was burnt, and also see it when you flipped the slice over and saw it was black. The burria tacos were phenomenal, but it would be nice if you could order an extra one or two as they are super thin and don't come with a side so they aren't gong to appease your hunger on their own.

We went with a small group to celebrate a birthday. We had an awesome waitress (who was very busy) who sold us on their two-for-one margarita special. They have many flavors available and the drinks are substantial. While enjoying the drinks we worked our way through several complimentary baskets of chips and salsa. Make sure to order a bowl of their white cheese queso with your trips. Everyone in our group tried something different from the menu. Our big eater got the "Monster" burrito. He came close but tapped out on being able to finish it. Several people had different variations of tacos while there was one more burrito order and a burrito bowl also ordered. Our group said they each liked their order. Personally, I had the molcajete, which is how I judge the Mexican restaurants I go to. It had good flavor, was a little soupy and could have benefited from a couple more shrimp. It wasn't the best I've tried but wasn't disappointing. They brought a wonderful deep fried cheesecake dessert to our birthday girl; there was plenty to share. Everyone really liked it. As far as stars, you know Yelp prohibiting half stars really skews the scores. I'd have given 3.5 stars; however, the service, good food and reasonable prices allowed me to round up to 4 stars. If you get a hankering for some Mexican food, this roadhouse is a logical place to fill your belly!
