    Ursula and our baby!
    Fulmer B.

Tabu Shabu is the best! My wife and I have been going there for years, it's her favorite restaurant. The staff is always on their game and the food is a great fun adventure. It was really special getting Ursula to hold our baby today, she's served us a lot of food throughout the years that helped build him, haha. Thank you for the great food, service and fun atmosphere. We can't wait to stop by again.

This place is hands down the best Shabu around. High quality meat and veggies, immaculate vibes and the best staff. I love Ursula and Santiago, all of the staff is amazing. They have been serving us for over a year and always create such a friendly engaging environment. I highly recommend the sukiyaki broth and Wagyu short rib. You can't ever go wrong with their crunchy garlic edamame either. See you all next week! With love.

The best Shabu experience you'll ever have!!

A M A Z I N G !!! I haven't been here in over 8 years and how does this place get even better than it was back in 2018?!?! The quality of the food is spot on and the service is PHENOMENAL!! Mustafa was the absolute best. Explained everything and was super attentive. Didn't have to look up or raise a hand once, he was there to refil and answer all questions! Same with the rest of the team, everyone worked together. No wonder this place is still here and THRIVING!!

    Ambiance is great!

Each time I come back, I am reminded why I love this place. The food is delicious, the service is amazing, and the ambiance is so fun. You get to do it yourself and it is so interactive. Everyone in the restaurant is having a good time and the music is amazing! My server Ursula is the absolute sweetest and such a great server. One of my favorite restaurants!!!!

Hot pot for a cold day is the best comfort feeling. High quality meat options and veggies with your choice of carbs, including white rice, brown rice, noodles, vermicelli, etc. I like the seating hot pot bar, makes the store cozier.

So happy I gave this place a try after my usual shabu place was closed. Love that they are open later than other shabu spots. Wonderful service and very attentive staff. The quality of the food was outstanding and you can tell it's all very fresh. Portion size is also very wonderful for the price point. Goma sauce is spot on as well. Even the napkins are sturdy! Will definitely be back and happy I found a new cute spot!

We came in a little before 8pm on a weekday when most other customers were leaving but the staff was super attentive and made us feel welcomed. We ordered the one pork and one beef (sorry, we were too hungry to take pictures); both good; the veggie plate is super big! We had to take some of the food out and the staff offered to give us more rice to take home! Very thoughtful of them! Overall I'd say this is a casual and relaxed place for a quick but decent quality meal - especially good on those chilly nights. Prices are very reasonable for what you get - at this writing prices for most shabu sets are around $30.

Still my favorite Shabu spot at the moment! Always such great quality and richness in flavor down to the tenderness of the meats. Today I tried the wagyu chuck eye and its added to my faves list! Wasn't super busy later in the being especially with the warm weather still rolling around. Staff always kind and helpful, ready when you need!

Ask the Community - Tabu Shabu - Costa Mesa

Is there happy hour on the weekend? If so what time?

    Are the veggies organic?

    Yes they are!

Is this an AYCE shabu restaurant?

    No. It's not.

    Do you take reservations?

They don't take reservations but the best time to come is around 5-6 PM. However, you can call the restaurant as you are on your way to see how long the wait is!

    Can I dine alone?

Great place to dine alone! This restaurant is shaped in a U and you sit on tall stools next to people and I always interact with the people sitting on either side of me. Bonus, the staff/servers are friendly and make great conversation as well.

Can you please add ramen noodles to the menu permanently? They are so good! Everything is good as always

Do you guys offer gluten free options?

Yes! So many GF options. I'm allergic to gluten and go here pretty much monthly (sometimes weekly or more 🤷🏻‍♀️). Everything GF is noted on the menu. Pretty much avoid certain broths and noodles and you're good!

How busy are you Monday nights? We love going to tabu and are regulars like once a week but i hate being right next to ppl on your left and right?

Hi Kelly! Unfortunately Monday nights tend to be our busiest night outside of the weekend. Although we are indeed a circular bar restaurant you can always request a seat on… Read more

    Do they have outside seating?

Do they have a happy hour?

Yes they do! Monday-Friday from 5-6pm 20% off entrees!

Do we need to make a reservation if we want to dine in on a Saturday night?

I don't believe Tabu Shabu offers reservations. They do, however, have a waitlist that can be joined via Yelp. I highly recommend joining the Yelp waitlist and getting there early.

Do they have gluten free entrees?

    Absolutely!!!

    Is this kid friendly?

Kids are allowed since it is a restaurant . However, seating is mainly bar-style seating, so it may be tough for kids to sit there.

Do they accept reservations? If not, can you be seated if your entire party is not there?

Sorry since we are bar style seating - we seat based on a first come first served basis. We have a wait list that you may sign in when you arrive but will only be seated when your entire party arrives. Feel free to call anytime and we can try to… Read more

    Do they take discover?

Yes! Amex, MC, VISA and Discover

    Is there a vegan option?

Yes! You can get a miso or kombu broth which would be vegan. Then you have a plate full of veggies (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, bok choy, spinach, Napa cabbage and scallions) and tofu!

Is there MSG is all of the bases?

They offer kombu (Traditional seaweed) broth, spicy miso, Suki yaki, and Tonkatsu broth. And there are NO MSG in any of them :)

Spicy miso ramen: 9/10 Actually one of the better ramens I've had lately. The broth is creamier and isn't overpowering with chicken/beef flavor. The chashu was nice and tender as well. I really liked that their noodles were al dente and not too soft Deluxe mazemen: 8/10 Taking my first bite, I was instantly greeted with an explosion of umami. There's a LOT of flavor packed in this bowl and the noodles used are actually a bit thicker which is right up my alley. My only drawback on this dish was that I wished it came with some sort of veggies to cut through all the flavor. They also give you a small serving of rice at the end for you to mix into the bottom which was a nice addition Kurobota sausage: 7.5/10 We've recently been on a kurobota craze. The interior is cozy and small with authentic Japanese decorations/setup. Kinda felt like we were eating in Kyoto or something, lol. The lady who served us was friendly and gave us good recommendations. I think she was handling the whole operation to be honest. To start it off, we ordered their specialty chicken karaage and it was very delicious. It has a nice crispy and crunchy texture. The batter on the chicken was good and once you bite it, the meat is juicy and tender. Doesn't really need dipping since it's so good. As for the Mazemen, we ordered the Deluxe and Veggie one, both is a 5/5. Very flavorful and it tastes just like ramen, but without the soup. The presentation of the dish looks like a work of art. Very picture pretty. I ate that shit up within ten minutes. After that they give you a scoop of rice so you can mix it up with the leftover sauce. Lots of umami for sure. Definitely will come back again to try the other flavors. People, trust me and come through!

You won't find your typical rainbow rolls at this restaurant (I do love a good rainbow roll though). The rolls we ordered were the Snowflake (which was flavored with yuzu), the Lobster roll (which was so much more than a typical baked lobster/langostino roll), and the Are You Kidding Me roll, which was big on truffle flavor and came topped with fried onions. I thoroughly enjoyed the Snowflake roll. It had multiple types of fish inside, and the yuzu flavor added the perfect fresh citrusy touch. It also came dotted with a tiny bit of sriracha (or some other spice) but it was just a hint and it's easy to wipe off if you don't want any spice. The Lobster roll was the star of the show. I give it a 10/10 for presentation, and it was also the best tasting one in my opinion. It was plated with a shelled lobster tail, which looks visually pleasing, but the most impressive part was right before serving, the waitress lit it on fire and handed it to us, as if it were flaming creme brulee or something. The flame actually wasn't on the roll itself, but was on what appeared to be a trail of salt (presumably soaked in some kind of alcohol to make it burn). It definitely was a cool effect and I've never seen anything like it in a sushi restaurant! Lastly, the Are You Kidding Me roll - this was my third favorite out of the three we ordered. It was pretty good but I think the truffle flavor was a bit strong. I'm also personally not a huge fan of fried onions on top of sushi since I think it clashes a bit with the freshness of the fish, and gives me too many bar food vibes. But it certainly was flavorful and my husband and I still finished it. We shared these three sushi rolls between the two of us and it was just the right amount of food to leave feeling full. Besides the food, the restaurant itself was nice although I'm not sure they really needed to have a live DJ there as opposed to having a Spotify Playlist. Didn't bother me but I don't think it really added much to the vibe. I would definitely eat here again!

Celebrated our anniversary !…read more Service was good and friendly. The flavors were beautiful! We sat like in the center of the restaurant. It's one of my fear LOL. But the flavors of the dishes eased my fear. It was delicious. I love salmon and uni when it comes to sushi and I would recommend others to try this place! Several people already saw my instagram post and asked the name of the restaurant! I'm very happy that the food turned out phenomenal! Toyko nacho (recommend) : it was messy to eat and had a kick of spice. I didn't mind the mess though. Lots of different flavors. Uni hotate yuzu: scallops topped with uni. Eating it was like butter. Sour flavor profile from the yuzu. A bit overpowering. And the maldon sea salt was interesting. So you get the texture of buttery soft from the scallop and uni and a crunch factor from the salt. 5pc Salmon nigiri: so fatty and buttery! If you love salmon then definitely get this. The presentation was so cute. It lays on a bed of ice. And throughout the dinner the pieces of salmon were chilled. Monster nigiri (recommend) : I don't think anything about this when my honey suggested order this. But once it got to the table and we ate it. Wow! This dish flavors stood out to me. The crispy sweet onions and sauce perfected the meal. Dragon: It was pretty tasty and decent. I know my honey liked it a lot. He prefers not to eat raw fish, so this was to his liking (I recommend to those who don't eat raw fish). Truffle essence (recommend) : The taste of truffle is weirdly addicting. The presentation was eye catching because the candle is keeping the truffle butter warm. The concept of dipping or pouring the truffle butter onto the roll was a fun way of eating. Snowflake roll: A lot of reviews mentioned this was a popular dish. I can see why it was popular. It's literally a bunch of fish in a roll! Haha, fish lover this would be perfect to order. Crunchy roll: It was a decent roll, but a bit dryer than I expected. Orders and ratings: Tokyo nacho 9/10. Uni hotate yuzu 10/10. 5pc Salmon nigiri 10/10. Monster 11/10. Dragon 8/10. Truffle essence 9/10. Snowflake roll 10/10. Crunchy roll 6/10. Thank you!

I've been around this area for so long but only just now am I trying Kashiwa Ramen!…read more Going inside, the seating area is not large, and off the bat, I couldn't get seated with my family because the 2 high chairs they have available were already taken by another family. Thankfully, they had a booster seat available to have our child sit on. We ordered a miso ramen, a spicy black garlic ramen and a gyoza for our appetizer. The person taking our order was patient with us as we ordered even as we were dealing with our toddler. Our requests were accommodated respectfully and to the best they could! Upon first glance, the gyoza looked good, like it was a family recipe and made from scratch! The spicy garlic ramen had thick, and a tasty looking broth and the portion sizes for the ramen looked like decent enough for the price. The taste for the gyoza was good, but the spicy black garlic ramen definitely stole the show! The broth was the perfect level of savory with a delicious blend of garlic that wasn't overpowering along with the pork broth. The chashu was incredibly tender and flavorful and the ramen was cooked perfectly - *chefs kiss*, amazing! Another reason that helped me decide on eating here was that there is a student discount for OCC students! Definitely cool that the local business is supporting local students! I had a great experience eating here with my family - the food was delicious, the staff was helpful and it was joy!
