Hubby & I drove up from Abingdon, VA (about 2 hours south), for his 58th birthday. Great location, and the restaurant itself is quite charming. The hostess was initially very friendly, and informed us we had the "best seats in the house", then proceeded to seat us at a 4-top right by the front window... lovely! While we were perusing the menu & extensive wine list, the hostess returned and informed us she had made a mistake; she motioned to a very small table, right up against the wall, and next to the (noisy) bar, and indicated that was actually our table. She stated that our current table had been specially requested by another party, and while the mistake had been hers, the small, unfortunately-located table should have been ours. Huge "strike one".
Nonetheless, we relocated to the tiny wall-side table, and our waiter appeared shortly thereafter. We ordered drinks (a margarita for hubby and a pineapple martini for me), as well as a goat-cheese salad and a bowl of clam chowder. The drinks were excellent, the salad was simple but beautifully-plated, fresh and tasty, and the chowder was fabulous. The noise from the bar (directly at my husband's back; the patron at the end of the bar kept leaning back in his chair and brushing up against hubby) was plentiful, and made normal-level conversation difficult at best.
Our waiter returned and presented us with a small basket of stale-tasting bread, then took our orders. I chose the filet with asparagus and a gruyere potato cake; hubby ordered the special (a NY strip, I believe), smashed potatoes and a side of mac-n-cheese. The noise continued to be an annoyance, as did the obviously-intoxicated man at the end of the bar.
Our meals arrived after about 20 minutes, and again, were beautifully-plated. The mac-n-cheese was missing, and though there are only 3 tables out front, we were unsuccessful in getting our waiter's attention. Hubby finally alerted the hostess, who then went to the back of the restaurant, returning to her station about two minutes later. Both steaks were very good, though I had ordered mine medium-well (I know, I know... but that's how I like it!), and it was definitely more medium-rare. Perhaps I should have said something, but since it actually tasted great anyway, I just let it go... and tried not to look at it as I ate. ;-) The potato cake and the smashed potatoes were bland, and very pedestrian... more like something you'd expect from your local Cracker Barrel. The mac-n-cheese was finally delivered (without apology or excuse) about 10 minutes later, and was little more than a yellow-orange greasy blob. I didn't try it, but hubby had one bite and declared it unfit for consumption. Our waiter spent plenty of time at the table with three ladies, never bothering to check back with us even once to inquire about our meal. Meanwhile, the party who had purportedly requested the table where we had first been seated took their places there; two of that party of four just happened to be the very loud and inebriated couple who had been seated at the end of the bar (behind hubby). Oh, yay.
The waiter finally appeared again, cleared our table, and brought our check, along with a piece of chocolate torte on a plate that read, "Happy Birthday". We each sampled the torte as we waited for the server to return with our card; it was quite good... but still did little to make up for an overall less-than-pleasant dining experience at Table 50. There are several great places to eat in Roanoke... sadly, we don't consider Table 50 to be one of them, and definitely will not return. read more
