Everything about this place is great. Covid restrictions forced us to finally eat on their patio and it was delightful. The room is very cozy too, especially on a winter evening. There is a popular Spanish Tapas chain located 5 minutes down the road from here that, while also great, lacks a certain authenticity and charm that one can experience at Taberna de Haro. It really feels like Spain here. The chorizo, croquettes, fish and pork skewers were all delicious. They have an extensive wine selection featuring selections from obscure villages all over Spain. Service was incredible. Our server Peter was knowledgable and made the evening very memorable. A great place for a romantic meal or an evening with friends. read more

So, it's been about 5 years since I first reviewed TdH. I've been there probably 15 times since, about half of those times in the past 18 months. Good: the bar is gin focused (happened a few years ago) and serves some great cocktails, provided you enjoy gin. I love gin so I love the bar (and the $1 oysters they have from 5-7; this causes the bar to go nuts and get insanely crowded so get there early). The wine list is also expansive, with a singular Spanish focus, and allows for serious exploration of Spain and what it has to offer. So, in short, alcohol is good here! Add in amazing outdoor seating during the warm months and you creep up to 5 stars for that alone. Average: The interior is modest and done in a Spanish style. Service is always adequate but rarely great. Many of the food items are good and remain consistent. When the owner is there she will help with the wine list and is quite knowledgeable (especially with Sherry but I'm not the biggest fan so it's less of a plus for me). Bad: Some food is just a massive misfire. Plagued by inconsistency or cooking preparation issues. In some cases, just poorly executed flavors. It's hard to not judge a restaurant by its food. Taberna is awesome for non-food things (oysters aside). If you go in knowing that, you'll be all set. read more

While a tad on the pricey side, this place really delivers, both in terms of service and - for the most part- the food quality. My absolute favorite was an eggplant dish topped with cheese. The rabbit paella was pretty good despite not really enjoying the rabit (there was also black sausage that was amazing) and it being a bit overly salted. I washed it down with a craft spanish beer, that was refreshing, but not worth ten dollars. (aside from trying it - since there are only a handful of spanish craft brewers) The ambience is both great for drinks and a splurge dinner after work with coworkers at the bar or on the patio, but it is clearly catering to the romantic dinner, and has done so amazingly well. A wide selection of creative tapas and a great bar selection - you couldn't go wrong here for a date. As a warning, if you sit at the bar, the ambience might have you thinking of ernest hemingway, and drinking accordingly - and as fun as it is here, - expect quite the tab when you walk out. read more

Not bad but not amazing either. Food was pretty good, decent atmosphere. We were a little annoyed when we arrived for our reservation in the bar. It was maybe a quarter full with plenty of open tables. We asked if we could sit at a window table and the hostess said it was being held for a party with four people. Walking in, this place looks great. Inviting, warm and gets you excited. Then the food starts. With the exception of one menu item that we ordered, the food was just bland. The meatballs were lacking any seasoning/salt or excitement, and the octopus dish was sitting in olive oil and had basic seasoning dashed on it. To top it off, we ended with the Sherry tasting which we thought must be good...based off it being a Sherry focused bar. The owner and 'Sommelier' brought this out, but was unsure which Sherry was the 'sweet' one, and asked us to try, and tell her. Yikes. read more

I spoke to Deborah Hansen (chef/owner) about catering a small event. I asked if she could accommodate several specific food allergies, and she replied that she would be able to accommodate them and was available to cater the date of the event. I then sent over the list of food we wanted to order and asked if any contained those specific allergens, and she replied no. But when I looked at the catering menu closely, I noticed several of the food did actually contain some of the allergens. I asked Deborah to double check again, letting her know that we were okay with the presence of certain allergens so long as we knew which dishes they were in to flag for our guests. Instead of apologizing for not actually taking the time to carefully review the list, Deborah responded by saying she could no longer cater our event. Having food allergies is tough, and I understand not all restaurants have the capability to cater to dietary restrictions. But it is different when you say you can accommodate specific food allergies, but then not actually take it seriously enough to check, and when called out for it, just decide not to cater. Given that this came after almost a week of going back and forth and after receiving reassurances from the chef/ owner herself that she prioritized the safety of our guests and that the allergies could be accommodated, it was truly disappointing. If you are concerned about food allergies, I recommend you go elsewhere. read more

We go here regularly and sit at the bar when there is space. Love this place! Excellent Spanish wines and food. Cozy ambiance. Really friendly service- shoutout to Tony the bartender! One request if management ever reads this- plllleeease include some more vegetarian tapas. I am aware that traditional Spanish cuisine isn't very veg-friendly however there are lots of plates that could easily be made to focus on a vegetable and not have meat. For example, there is a pheasant or quail plate that is surrounded by broad beans and radicchio. Why not make another option that is just the vegetables? I would love that! read more

If you want to try authentic Spanish food, look past this place. Food was incredibly bland. 1) One of the white plates on the table was dirty. 2) We had ordered our tapas and our entrees and my entree came out before anything else (even before bread was placed on the table which was cold and tough. They don't cut the slices all the way through so your fighting with it to just rip a whole slice off ) so food wasn't being fired/expedited correctly. 3) Ordered a Filet to be cooked medium rare... it had a pale sear and was extremely raw on the inside. Pretty much left the whole thing on the plate (I made an obvious cut to show it wasn't cooked correctly) and no one in the restaurant asked me what was wrong with it. 4) Traditional paella has a crunchy layer of rice... it was soggy. Disappointing especially since the wait for this dish is 30 minutes. 5) Croquettes were over fried leaving an overall bitter taste. 6) Only highlight was that the the employees were nice. Expensive with very little attention to detail. Won't be coming back. read more

Not sure why there is so much rave about this place. We tried 7 different types of their tapas. Frog legs were good, everything else was pretty mediocre. Also, don't go if you like dessert. Their flan was of the grocery store level quality. The truffles were decent though. Service was poor but they added 20% tip to the check even though there were only three people at the table. We had to ask to remove it so that we can tip whatever we wanted. We are generally good tippers and 20% is our base with more if the service is good. Needless to say, this time around the tip was nowhere close to that amount. It would be a decent experience if either food or service were good. With both being of low/mediocre quality we left this place completely underwhelmed. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I have to be honest in these reviews. The food here sucks - it's just not well cooked (e.g., the steak tapas were rare and borderline raw, even though we ordered medium), the pig ears were just alright, and the best dish was actually the simplest and most mundane - the potato bites. It also took close to 40 minutes to get our food and the waitress was just dilly dallying and having a good time, completely not focusing on her work. This is a worse and more expensive version of Barcelona Wine Bar. Just go there. The 16 dollar cheese plate has literally 5 bites of cheese, and the jamón is tough and cut poorly (and 28$ for 2 oz). Fantastic! One of, if not the, only authentic Spanish tapas restaurants in Boston. Thomas was our guide throughout the evening, and he was extraordinarily helpful and knowledgeable. He helped us navigate the extensive wine list with precision, ultimately towards a uniquely delicious wine. The food was great, especially the bravas (the best I've had outside of Madrid) and the croquetas. Combined with a unique selection of cheeses and fresh sliced jamon iberico, it was a memorable meal. Girls night out at the beautiful bar was perfect! We ordered squid, the tortilla, frog legs, muscles, oysters, fish, ricotta dessert and chocolate truffles....left stuffed, had plenty of time to talk comfortably over wine and generally satisfied. In a new found purpose to be useful I'm going to tell you some useful things about Taberna... 1. Splurge on the appetizers - these little delicacies on bread are what tapas is really about: decorated 'tops' for your wine glass. Go adventurous and get many 2. Wine list - yes yes yes, it's amazing. but don't get lost. The wines per glass are simply at the back and are mostly great Riojas. OMD I love Riojas. 3. Main dishes - think 1.5 per person. Choose the dish you'd like most / want to show-off the most plus half of a filling 'side' dish like potatos or salad. 4. Desert - don't get too full. The cinammon vanilla soup (custard) is the most divine desert I've touched in New England (suck on it L'Espalier!) 5. Staff - yeah, our waiter was keen but a bit of a dick. He was very good at everything except knowing the menu. Truthfully, he started only a week before, but it might as well have been a day. 6. Money - bring it 7. Bathroom - so the decor is pretty sweet in this place (great layout with the lady-chef's cooking in full view) but the bathrooms are even better. For the sit-down crew (AKA you double Xers) there is a framed article about the fearless lady-chef that makes an interesting read. Great Spot for an authentic tapas night! Sipping wine outside on their patio was like being transported back to Madrid for the evening. The tapas they have here are far better than the ones at Tapeo (which USED to be my favorite spot). The menu is far more extensive than any other tapas place in Boston with the best: Gambas al ajillo - not too overwhelming with garlic and juicy succulent shrimp. Arroz negro - Squid ink paella was the BEST thing on the menu along with the rice not being too soft and bite size of seafood in it. Mejillones en salsa romescu - mussels in red sauce made the bread disappear with it's dipping appeal. Chuletas de cordero a la parrilla - lampchop wasn't overly cook and was still tender.. just made me want more. Pollo al ajillo - chicken thighs fried with garlic was a bit too done and perhaps I was too full but I only had a bite of it. There were so much more that I wanted to order, the seabass, anchovies, octopus and pate... but I guess that's for another trip. I now found my new favorite spot. read more

Ideally, this place would get 4.5 stars, but since my first visit here was so enjoyable, I will bump it up. We arrived around 7:30 on a rainy Saturday night and found the place full, but we didn't wait long. And then we totally overdid it. Garlicky shrimp, lamb, crispy chicken, bread with creamy goat cheese and tomatoes, the most amazing calamari I ever had (ever), flaky and flavorful codfish balls, anchovies and olives, the endive and blue cheese salad, potatoes, a bottle of red, four cafe con leche, the flan and the chocolate pudding. It was a feast for the senses. If I had to choose my favorites, though, it would be the shrimp, the calamari (that breading was ethereal) and the codfish balls. Josh loves blue cheese, so he raved about the endive, and everyone loved the lamb. Perfect flan and extremely rich pudding. We probably could have done without the potatoes and the chicken, as well as one of the desserts, only because it was just too much food. Tom E. was right in saying 1.5 dishes per person - 2 each is a little much. The service was good, and I like when you see the owner walking around picking up glasses and wiping down tables. The open kitchen adds to the laid back atmosphere. This is great place for a small group or date - but larger groups beware (they don't take reservations). At fifty dollars a person, it is steep, but we had wine, coffee and dessert, so not completely ridiculous. read more

Hmm, I just don't get it. Maybe I tried the wrong things, but this place is so eh, it hurts. I hit this place up on a pretty hot day this summer right after work for some girl talk with a friend. I totally dug that it was A.) Right across from the St. Mary's T Stop B.) Cute outdoor seating C.) Awesome Sangria However, the staff wasn't very helpful with helping me out with the menu, I had a few questions and she just seemed to sort of stare at both of us a long time before answering half heartedly--she wasn't rude exactly, just not quite with it. The food was really expensive, we didn't really order much since the place was pretty empty I had no guilt about that--just a few things to tie us over--mushrooms, a ham and cheese dish and between that and our Sangria pitcher we ended up paying a lot. I enjoyed the potatoe salad we got for free--it was cool and good on the hot summer day and like I said--the Sangria hit the spot. I just can't imagine this place being fufilling under any circumstance... After hearing about the home made chocolate truffle dessert with sea salt and evoo that I didn't get to try this time around, I know I need to come back here. Came here as part of a wine tasting and tapas pairing class that was a lovely gift from my boyfriend Matt J. There were only 6 of us in the class which was taught and led by the owner/chef of the restaurant itself which was pretty cool since I doubt that many restaurants have their head chefs spend almost 3 hours guiding your through Spain and the all of the types of wines that they have. She even uses a map to show you where each wine is from, talks about the soil and the climate, and it was honestly one of the more educational wine tastings I've ever been too. You can tell that she really loves her Spanish wine and Spanish culture. She used to own a restaurant in Spain and now owns this one here and still imports a ton of stuff directly from Spain just to be as authentic as possible, which I definitely appreciate. We got to try 5 wines and we had 4 tapas and those clams simmered in that garlic sauce were amazingly paired with her wine choice. I was ecstatic to see they brought extra bread over for us to use to soak up all of that garlicky goodness heh And the noodle paella cooked with that cinnamon stick, had just the right amount of sweetness and was just filling enough to help all of that wine not hit me too hard :-) Of course, like any good Spanish restaurant, we ended on some Spanish goat cheese that just tasted heavenly with the rioja that was paired with it. So you can all probably see why I can't wait to go back here for a normal tapas excursions, because she clearly takes the extra step to make sure you have that Spanish trip for your tastebuds if you come here. read more

My boyfriend and I try out a lot of different restaurants around the Boston/Cambridge area because we love seeing what this city has to offer. We hadn't planned to go anywhere so we hopped on the T, saw this place and headed over. It looked interesting. In the three months that we've gone exploring this was our only and first awful experience. For a restaurant that has been around since 1998 you would think they would know how to train their waitstaff/hostesses. Absolutely no one had any communication skills. I've never experienced so many awkward interactions with people before. The hostess greeted us in a daze, got us situated and sent us over to the bar to wait. At the bar we were given water, I had a dirty glass so I didn't really drink from it and when I told the bartender he said, "Oh, that's nothing!" I disregarded it. He then told us our table was ready and to head over to the host stand. We did. The same girl who greeted us asked, "Can I help you gentlemen?" as if she had never seen us before. The question obviously does not seem weird, but she truly did not know that she had just checked us in. We continued to disregard all of this and kept moving. We were seated outside. Our waitress greeted us, took our order, brought our drinks and never came back. However, she had another table down the row that she made frequent visits to. Our order took 30-40 minutes to get to our table. During this time we weren't checked on once. We put in our order around 7:50 and it got to us around 8:30. It would have been understandable if we had ordered the "complete" meals, but we only ordered "medium" plates. We opened our silverware and my boyfriend had a knife with food on it. I didn't need one, so I just gave him mine. About half way through my meal I asked for another soda. That didn't come until I was finished eating. It wasn't until we got our check that our waitress asked, "Did you ever get your soda?" After setting down the check where I had been charged another $4 for a soda (in total $8 for maybe 16oz of coke). With prices like the ones on the menu, I would expect service to be waaaay better. It also would not have been as bad if the food was good, but it was totally unimpressive. To sum it up... - 1 dirty dish, fine. 2 dirty dishes, check your stuff. - The staff was there to make money, fine. But you have to care for your guests. - Wait time was way too long for everything, and it was not that busy. Only the outside was packed with hardly anyone inside. - The place was clean for the most part. That's the 1 star. I've been a longtime frequenter (20 yrs) of Dali in Somerville and have to admit it is possibly my favorite restaurant in all of Boston. But my husband and I were curious about Taberna de Haro after reading some reviews. We finally had a chance to check it out and we were both *severely* disappointed. Nothing, nothing at all, was comparable in the quality of food, service and price to Dali. The tapas were delivered widely spaced with nothing to eat them with ... the roasted red peppers almost certainly came out of a jar, the potatoes were so spicy even my husband, who loves spicy food, could not eat them, and our signature absolute favorite dish at Dali, the garlic shrimp, was uncomprehensibly unimpressive here. It was a MAJOR disappointment ... and it was way too pricey. To make up for our disappointing meal at Taberna we visited Dali last night with friends and had the most perfect meal ... absolutely everything was delicious, they've added many new things to the menu that were great, but my favorite is still the garlic shrimp, mmmmm! The pitcher of sangria was great and dessert is a must (new items there too). Five adults and the perfect amount of food: approx. 12 tapas, 8-glass pitcher of sangria, coffees and three desserts for approx. $181. The only really truly authentic Spanish food in Boston, no frills, no fancy stylized creations. This is what you would get if really eating in Spain. Ingredients are always fresh, and unusual choices include sepia and frog legs (both excellent); typical dishes like lamb Chuletillas and solomillo with blue cheese are also great. Plus, he gets rare imports of Spanish hams and cured meats and cheeses. Of course, the wine list is like a bible, given Julio's vocation in his past life. But here is the thing... The last few times I went, I noted, with discontent, they've changed the menu away from raciones and more towards large simple and more expensive entree dishes (I'm guessing, for sharing?), and raised their prices too. The waitresses sometimes have a real attitude, so you almost feel guilty ordering and taking your time... We still go cause it's fun there and we miss Spanish food. read more

Such a disappointing experience here over the weekend. I'd been here before with a friend maybe a year and a half ago and loved it, so decided to come back with my husband to enjoy the patio on Friday. Right away, the staff was super friendly, taking a table from the dining room to accommodate our desire to sit outside. And our server was nice enough, if not overly attentive. But the positives pretty much end there. Two of the 3 tapas we ordered were pretty awful, comically overpriced for the poor quality. We started with the croquettes, which were heavenly! A wonderful portent for things to come...or not. The braised quail in cocoa sauce was just poorly executed. The quail was tough and rubbery. The beans had an unpleasant texture, no flavor and served no purpose at all on the plate other than filler. And aside from an abrasive bitterness, the sauce lacked any developed flavor. And the consistency was unpleasant on this as well - it was more like sticky refried beans than a nice, smooth mole sauce. The best you could say about it was that it was better than the trout... Oh, the trout. This was just awful. Overcooked, dry, no flavor whatsoever other than a weird, grassy aftertaste (too much thyme?). There were a few chunks of the saddest potatoes I have ever seen - so colorless, there is no way the chef could have missed how under-cooked they were. Gross. And for $16, a downright insult. We couldn't even finish it. Otherwise, there were quite a few missed marks. For instance, the crusty bread was tasty, but not accompanied by any spreads, butter, oils, etc. Just dry, lonely bread. Maybe it's traditional in Spain to munch on plain bread before a meal, I don't know. And goodness knows our tapas were way too dry to be able to use for dipping. Also, the quail and trout were ordered at the same time, but the trout came out a good 10 minutes after the quail and was room temperature at best, suggesting it had just been sitting there forever. I like to be honest with establishments and give them a chance to redeem mistakes, but no one at any point even asked how we were enjoying the meal. The owner was floating around outside, chatting with patrons, but somehow never made it to our table. And the server must have seen how little of the fish we ate, but didn't care to comment on it. We have a giltcity deal for a free tapa, but honestly, even a freebie might not be enough to compel us to return. read more

"So... what is your offer?" The professor's question broke the heavy silence that had lingered since we sat down. He was across from me, his eyes wandering lazily back from the sealed folder of precious documents to my face. The faint orange glow from the indoor lights illuminated made him seem younger, and more dangerous, than before. "Three hundred thousand up front, another one hundred thousand when it's complete." I watched him eye for any kind of response, but there was none. He was familiar with the art of negotiation. "Fair enough," he said, "but I wonder if you realize the value of these documents?" "Indeed, professor." I wondered at his apparent lack of strategy. "Since you seem to think I do not appreciate their value, let me rephrase my offer. Half a million now, three hundred thousand afterwards!" Again, he betrayed no indication that my words meant anything to him. "As you wish..." his words lingered in the air like the smoke from a lit cigarette, which was prohibited even here at the outdoor tables, according to Brookline statutes. We glanced at the menus in silence and my brain did somersaults over the stroke of apparent luck that had befallen me... and us... "Can you pay?" I asked, without glancing up from the menu. The Pollo al ajillo looked delicious. Silence. Unconsciously I held my breath. I looked up slowly to find the professor staring coldly into my eyes. He motioned for me to look at the table. A small plate had mysteriously appeared between us, covered by a tiny silver serving lid. "Open it" he said, and I thought I detected the faintest touch of a smile at the edges of his mouth. Slowly I set down my menu and reached for the silver cover. Why did I feel a sense of dread and despair rising? What could the professor mean with such a display? Quickly, like ripping the bandaid off a fresh wound, I pulled back the lid. My eyes went blurry as I struggled to make sense of what they perceived. Four teeny, tiny pieces of... food... sat coyly on the otherwise empty serving plate. "Good god... What... what is THIS?" "Tapas!" the professor exclaimed with a laugh. He reached across the table to slap me on the shoulder, rousing me from my revery. "I thought it would be bigger!" I exclaimed in honest surprise. "That's what she said!" the professor responded, with a sly smile. We both had a good laugh at that, and the rest of the meal progressed comfortably with fine wine and a cool breeze to top it off. It was only later, having returned to my hotel room that I realized the depth of my stupidity. He had switched the documents! When i checked the folder I found only cheap flyers for the local car wash and a salon advertising discounts on waxing services. I knew I never should have trusted him! Now my life's work was gone... stolen! And my last hope of ransoming my dear sister, vanished! On a side note, the dinner was good and the ambience was quite beautiful and unique. I would definitely recommend it for a meal or for a drink at the bar with $4 tapas, so long as you are not trying to conduct serious international espionage and ransom business. read more

The artichoke hearts are amazing, boffo! for the bluefish, the cheese plate is choice and the other pinchos are, well, really good too. They have outdoor space (FAB!), they let our dogs join us outside (SUPER FAB!), and the servers are very nice. I would like to eat here every night... only problem is that I'd have to start selling my shoe collection to make it happen. So excited to find a Spanish restaurant shortly before our trip to Barcelona. We went hoping to gain some insights into Spanish wines, what we found was service that was a little to unrefined for our personal taste, so much that, when we didn't like what was being offered, the server sort of snubbed us from then on out. Our next mistake was to forgive the faux pas, and sign up for the email list. After some time, we decided no mas emails, and tried 6 or 7 times to UNSUBSCRIBE! We tried the traditional method by unsubscribing at the end of the email, we tried emailing back, and I kid you not, we tried 6 or 7 times. We're still getting unwanted emails. Try the food, if you will, as I recall it was mixed. But be careful about offering your personal opinion about wine that is not to your liking, and my all means DON'T sign up for the email list... you'll never get off of it. read more

I will try to be short: 1. Service is nice but too slow and unprofessional. You can feel how they want to sell you as much as they can... And they don't care how you feel during your meal. Do you need a salt, do you need a new plate...? Nobody cares. You have to ask for everything and sometimes twicely 2. Food was served chaoticly. They brought drinks, then first tapas, then after a while bread was served...then later we get our second plate. And we were waiting for paella for a while 3. Food was cooked well but the meal itself didn't make us happy. We got paella for $25 which was made only from rice.... Well, there was some mustard-style sauce and few octopus in there. So, basically it was only rice! I can boil and even fry rice at home too :) 4. Sangria was .... (I am trying to control myself here)... not good and expensive. $34 for pitcher with watery wine with ice..... It was my first time here and last. I really enjoyed Taberna De Haro - we're lucky in that it's right next to our place, convenience is amazing. We like a lot of exotic and new foods to try, so we went here knowing we'd like to try a lot of different things. We tried multiple spreads, the anchovies and well as the frog legs and I have to saw, weirdly enough, the frog legs were my favorite. They were SO good, you almost wish someone didn't tell you they were frog legs. The wine list was also extremely expansive, with a lot of affordable options listed. It was delicious! I will advise, if you get a mix drink, stick with the cocktails on their cocktail list, don't go rouge. First of all, don't try to make a reservation on Yelp for this restaurant because it doesn't work. I made one for 9PM but apparently the restaurant had no record of it. The hostess was really really nice and apologized and told us the wait would be about 40 minutes. We waited for about an hour but she made sure to keep our wine glasses filled. Once we sat we ordered a bottle of red wine from the very extensive and detailed wine list. For tapas we ordered the Patatas Bravas which were soo good! Reminded me of just how they tasted in Barcelona when I was living there - delicioso! We then ordered the Catalan Chicken. This had a very very smoky taste which I personally don't really like and there were alot of little bones which kind of grosses me out. The third dish we ordered were the artichokes. These were nothing special but good. I would definitely try Taberna de Haro again and maybe order some different dishes. It's really cute inside and has a real spanish feel. Service was also great, which makes it an inviting place and deserving of a second visit. read more

The atmosphere is SO COZY - warm and inviting and lovely in every way. I walk past it every night on my way home and everyone inside always looks like they are having so much fun. I stare in the windows and suddenly feel lonely, hungry, and cold. Like the proverbial beggar gazing in on a Thanksgiving feast. However, "feast" is hardly an appropriate word. As far as I'm concerned - their fare is not a meal. I really go to this place for a glass of wine, the food is secondary. And if you will allow me a moment for a vegetarian rant: I hate places like this where everyone orders a little plate and everyone shares - because I can't eat what everyone else has and my meal is really boring. Would it kill them to make a vegetarian sampler plate? Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoy the place. It is a great place for a casual date or to kick back with some wine. Did I mention how cozy it is? There are pillows. Funny/ of note: I live near this place and I try to use it as a landmark when giving people directions to my house - but they always think I'm saying turn at the "topless bar" instead of the "tapas bar." You can't deny that the food quality is great but compared to other tapas options in the city I think Taberna de Haro is overpriced. The ambiance in the restaurant is good and I live close by, but I find that every time I leave I am left thinking that the value doesn't match up against other Tapas options: Masa - More fun and much better value & specials Toro - More unique Menu Tapeo - Same quality better prices/specials BarLola - Better value for food/drinks You can't go wrong with Taberna de Haro, just don't plan on having a great meal at a great price, just settle for the great meal. read more

We went for my mother's 60th b-day and it felt like a huge waste of money. We tried their $30 paella plate made with pasta instead of rice and it tasted like Chef boyardee, there also wasn't any fish or meet in it for a 30 dollar dish. Some other tapas were ok but overpriced and in general underwhelming. Some dishes like their calamari was salted unevenly. Sangria was about the best thing we had. Also what kind of restaurant runs out of rice? Felt like everything we asked for was out, including their other paella dish. Save your money and go somewhere else. We sure wish we had. The Good: seated quickly on a Friday night, server quick to take our order. The Bad: only got half our food! Went in ordering 3-4 tapas/person, was told they only recommended 2/person. Fine, we trimmed it down to 3 each...with some reservation since their tapas clearly come in different portion sizes... Received our drinks within 10 minutes, 3 tapas/bread within 20...and sat there for another 30 minutes watching other people's orders pile on through the kitchen. After being reassured by server our last 3 dishes where coming out, sat for another 15 making googley eyes at other patrons' dishes...and had to flag server to check on order. Turns out the kitchen didn't even start firing our dishes yet -- WHAAAAT??? The owner came by, apologized, comped 2 drinks...so we paid $40 for 3 tiny plates, and left starving. Went down the street to get dinner, attempt #2. Why am I paying to leave a restaurant hungry, when they had an epic fail on their end? Ridiculous...avoid this place at all costs, these folks place zero value on service and quality. read more

Ate here on a beautiful spring evening. The sun was shining with a gentle wind to cool you off, and we were seated outside to enjoy the weather. We had almost 1-1/2 hours to enjoy our meal before catching a show later in the evening. The inside decor was "fine," the outside aluminum tables and chairs were "fine." Nothing fancy, nothing cheap, just "fine." Our waitress gave us a few minutes to look over the menus (food, drinks, wine). I'll start with the wine list, err... book. It was abundant and overwhelming, with at least 15 options for each style of wine! For a moment, I thought we were looking at a Wine Enthusiast magazine. However, those thoughts quickly vanished when we started to read the paragraph long descriptions of each bottle of wine. "masculine brother" and "sexy and wet" were a couple of the more memorable descriptions in just the "juicy white" section alone. The bottles seem reasonably priced, with most selections in the $30-40 range. Our bottle of Albarino was a nice choice on such a hot day. Too bad it wasn't chilled when it got to us. The food menu also had a vast selection of meats, fish, and veggies. Hot and Cold tapas, along with a few main dishes. We stuck with 4 tapas selections: - The Patatas bravas were delivered to our table about 2 minutes after we ordered them. Surprisingly, they were cooked well, not too crisp, not soggy. But the "feisty" sauce was either Sriracha or Frank's Red Hot with a little cream to soften it. There were no other seasonings, which left them fairly boring, yet "feisty." - The Gambas al ajillo were small little shrimp (50-60/lb) that sat in olive oil, with a couple bits of garlic. These also came out within minutes of our order, but the oil had already formed a solid layer on top, so they had been sitting for a while(?) The only garlic flavor came from the garlic itself, the shrimp were fairly bland, though they were cooked fine. A very non-impressive dish for $14. - The Lomo con ciruelas y endibias was presently as thinly sliced cuts, with little slices of Plum and endive. Again, this plate was brought to the table almost immediately, and we were concerned that we'd be done with our meal in less than 15 minutes... I found the pork to be another bland representation of a good dish. I'm not sure what part of "house cured" it was missing, maybe it was just the flavor. The plum was probably the best part of this dish, full of flavor and a nice contrast in texture. - Finally, the Berenjena con mato came out last, a solid 20 minutes after everything else, and after we thought they forgot about the dish. Three disks of olive oil soaked eggplant. I couldn't even tell you what kind of cheese it was, other than soft and flavorless. The honey drizzle stole the show on these. - And to add to the meal, we decided to order dessert. Who could pass on the trufas porrera, with their showering of cocoa and sea salt! Well, the bare truffles came out on a plate, paired with some slices of french bread. I'm pretty sure the truffles had been sitting on the plate for a while, evident by the fact that they were permanently "fused" to the plate. After setting the plate down, the waitress took out a shaker and tapped some cocoa dust on the truffles and bread, followed by a salt shaker and a few grains of sea salt. Finally, she doused everything in EVOO. Huh? I was shocked that the fine balance of chocolate and sea salt was left up to the fingers of the waitress, what chef would allow that? Surprisingly, the truffles were good, flavorful, and tasty. Though, I really don't know what the bread was doing on the plate. Overall, we were very disappointed with this restaurant. I think the combination of bland food and high(er) prices sank our opinion of Taberna de Haro. It's a solid 3 Stars, mostly because of the wine list, the variety of offerings, and the location. read more

Four stars for food, service and ambiance. Good wine list, patio seating, yellow walls (which seem to automatically make me love places, don't know why), yummy sangria, GREAT chocolate pudding desert which was really more like a mousse, really excellent queso and chorizo... Which would earn it five stars except WOW, PRICES! When I first looked at the menu I thought it would actually be really affordable, and having a friend who's never had tapas and who I was trying to impress, and both of us trying to stay on a budget, I brought him there and one other person. We saw two groups of food: small dishes that started in the 4 or 5 $ range, and large dishes that went from $8 to more than $20. I assumed that the first range was tapas and the second range was main courses...Only to learn when the food came that the HIGH range items were traditional tapas dishes and that the low range items were itty bitty portions that each fit on one slice of bread. $5 for bread with a piece of sausage on it? Yeah, maybe if it's a SANDWICH. We ordered 4 items from the low-priced side and one item from the high priced side expecting it to be plenty for 3 people, but after seeing the portions I would question whether or not it's enough for 2. Thank God for free bread. And for the Dunkin Donuts across the street where we went for delicious personal pizzas at $2.99 a pop afterwards :D Honestly, I'm used to being able to get large tapas plates for less than $10 and meal sized dishes for $20 at a tapas joint no problem. This befuddled me. Though kudos for having a squid ink rice thing. Squid ink is delicious and unfortunately I did not get to try it here as my friend is a wimp, but it's cool nonetheless. read more

A friend and I went tonight for dinner, and the food and service were both incredible. We shared: -Txistorra con brandada (chorizo-esque sausage with salt-cod mashed potatoes) -Habas con jamón (lima beans with serrano ham) -Empanada de atún (puff pastry filled with traditional tuna and sofrito) -Croquetas de jamón -Potato tortilla -Piquillos con brandada Everything was just outstanding. Having lived in Spain and eaten in most Spanish restaurants in Boston, this was by far the most authentic. The best tortilla and croquetas I've had in a US restaurant. Everything tasted almost exactly as it would in a Spanish taberna in Madrid. For dining "al aire libre," head to Tapeo, for nouveau cuisine, head to Toro, for romance head to Dalí, and for traditional delicious tapas, come here. A couple of things that could be a little better (but overall didn't affect the dining experience): -Easy on the nutmeg in the croquetas' béchamel sauce. It should be "that mysterious ingredient" and nothing more. -The brandada, made with salt cod was, well, just a tad too salty... but had great flavor nonetheless. -It's soooo tiny, so the wait was a little long, and there's really no good place to stand without being in the way of the staff. Our server, Bridget, was fantastic. All of our tapas were paced perfectly, the table was very well-maintained, and everything ran smoothly and quickly. Can't wait to come back to this gem! read more

I am at a loss for words to describe what an amazing dining experience we had here last night. My friend, Arielle, lives across the street and suggested it. Being a South End restaurant snob I agreed, even though I was bitter about the commute to Brookline in the rain and the fact that their Yelp! Reviews were hovering at 3 out of 5. But this place was ***FANTASTIC*** We were seated promptly at 7:30 after making a reservation an hour before via Open Table. The table we originally got was not in a great area of the restaurant so I kindly asked to move, and we went to another area of the restaurant which was better. The good: +the service was slow, which was GREAT. They were attentive, let us take our time (in true Spanish culture), and allowed us to order as we pleased. The waitress (I think her name was Katie) said over and over it was no rush at all, and we truly felt like we were dining in home with her friends. +the food. where to begin... everything was superb: THE GARLIC SHRIMP WAS TO DIE FOR, THE POTATO PIE THING, THE GOAT CHEESE CORSTINI, THE RED WINE, THE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES WITH OLIVE OIL/BREAD/SALT WERE AMAZING, AND THE HERLOOM TOMATO GAZPACHO SOUP WAS FUCKING AMAZING. I almost licked the plate of the garlic shrimp because the sauce was so amazing. We stayed close to when this place was closing after 11:00pm and were not rushed at all. The little bus boy from Haiti flirted with us, we took some photos, we chatted with the manager of the bar... I cannot believe this place has bad reviews-- some people seriously didn't give this chance a fair shot or don't enjoy the quality of a relaxing, long meal. This isn't McDonalds-- it's a dining experience. I will be back here every chance I get!!!! read more

Okay, I see a lot of reviews whining about prices. Yes, this place is expensive, but it's because it's top quality ingredients carefully prepared. If you want a $3 pizza, go to Dunkin Donuts and don't speak to me. If you want the most delicious food you have ever eaten, go to Taberna de Haro. We've had one or two "eh" dishes- the rabbit last night was tasteless- and 10 or 12 delicious ones. The servers appear to be making an effort to be more friendly and attentive, and we did not have much of a problem with empty water glasses or anything. The food is a bit slow, and I recommend having cheese and crackers or something before you go, so you don't starve and so you only need 1 or 2 tapas per person to be full. Unfortunately I don't like wine, so I feel like I miss half the experience, but the food is still amazing. Doesn't take reservations, but you can call a few minutes ahead to "put your name on the list." read more

I absolutely love this place. I've been here several times and have come away satisfied and happy every time (read: semi-drunk from delicious wine and garlic-intense food). The atmosphere is warm and cozy inside and a wonderful place to eat outside in the summer. I'm not a wine expert but the list is pretty impressive and the manager will recommend some good, affordable picks. Also, definitely try the quail if you go, it's life altering. Some downsides: There is often a wait when it is busy but the waitstaff is attentive and offers you a wine list while you wait. Once I waited quite a while here but was given some free tapas as consolation :). Also, had a seriously salty salad once that I really just couldn't handle. Note: I don't think they take "official" reservations, but if you call ahead that day you can get on the list to avoid waiting (someone correct me if my understanding is wrong here...). read more
