When cut, the cross sections showed that there was more breading than fish, top and bottom. I got a sample of the reddish chicken chunks I saw piled on the grill which was pretty good. With my fish, I had a choice from three types of rice. I chose spicy. This reddish rice was barely spicy at all and low in flavor generally. This comes with a small salad and some pita bread strips. The staff were very friendly and welcoming even though it was close to their closing time. They specialize in gyro's but also make other sandwiches. Me and my friend both ordered the lamb gyro. The quality was the same as I tried it the first time. Everything tasted fresh, my lamb was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I'm glad I added the hot sauce along with the white sauce both were delicious mixed with the rice and meat. My husband likes the chicken, he was pleasantly surprised. I had it before and I loved it. He said he would definitely order here again. The falafel were good, good consistency in the inside, a little too crispy on the outside for me but still good. The restaurant is inside a convenient store to the left as you walk in. There's a few seating but looks like their business mostly consists of takeout. The gyros in Philadelphia, where Meru Patel grew up, had a unique flavor about them. The gyros he'd buy from a street vendor in Brooklyn also were a hyped-up version of the classic Greek sandwich. They were more than just lamb, a couple vegetables and feta cheese wrapped in a pita. His family owned the Westcott Grocery store for the past 15 years, which had a pizzeria inside for years, but Meru wanted to bring that Middle Eastern fusion flavor to Syracuse, so Syracuse Halal Gyro opened in its place in 2020. The wife and I absolutely love Mediterranean food, so we'll try any and every restaurant that comes around. While running errands, we decided to give Syracuse Halal a try. We hadnt realized it was inside a grocery store at the time, but figured it out quickly and were able to find parking surprisingly easily in the usually packed Westcott area. I got the combo plate with rice, marinated chicken and lamb, lettuce, tomato, pickles, banana peppers and white and hot sauce. The wife got a normal gyro with a side of fries, and we got a side of stuffed grape leaves and falafel. Bowl was very good, the Mediterranean sauces are always amazing and make everything taste great, and the chicken and lamb had great flavor. Wife loved her gyro. We weren't a big fan of the fries, they seemed like frozen fries outta a bag and had no seasoning at all. The falafel was good, but oddly didn't come with any dipping sauce as they do at almost every other Mediterranean restaurant, and the grape leaves were good as well, but also could've used some type of sauce. Most Mediterranean places have switched to only evening hours it seems, so them being open during lunch hours is a huge plus to us as well. $33 for everything and we both had left overs. And it is outstanding. We have had the chicken and gyro platters both times and both times the food was out of this world good. The meats are seasoned perfectly and juicy, the rice is fluffy and all the veggies are fresh and crisp. You sometimes get dried out meat from those NYC carts but not here. The white sauce is perfect and the hot sauce is spicy but not so overpowering it puts your mouth on fire. They sell bottles of both if you wanna bring some home. When I first saw the prices I thought it was maybe a little expenses ($13 for a platter), but they load you up with so much food you will easily get two meals. Seriously, the portions are huge!
