Being that this sushi joint is in the suburbs, I was surprised at how the inside of the place gave off an urban vibe. It is kind of strange how the restaurant is hidden away in a Target (I think) parking lot. Plus, the exterior is kind of run-down and the windows are full of cheesy pictures of their food. This brings me back to Kate Winslet's quote in "The Life of David Gale": "You know a restaurant is not good if they have pictures of their food." If my boyfriend didn't beg me to go there with him, I probably never would've set foot into the restaurant, let alone realize that there was actually a sushi joint in that semi run-down white building tucked away in a corner of a parking lot. Regardless of their weird location and shabby exterior, I liked it there. The service was graceful and friendly, and the sushi was pretty good (at least for a place in the suburbs). I went through a semi culture shock when I stepped outside, for that I had subconsciously felt that I was in downtown Chicago when I was inside. This may indicate that they tried a little too hard to appear sophisticated and classy, which was pretty hard to pull off when they were situated in a freakin' parking lot in Batavia. So if you're ever in the suburbs and you're sick of Panda Express, be sure to trek over there. Make sure you dress up a little bit. read more

As others have mentioned, this place is a hidden gem in the burbs. Its really surprising to have this place in Batavia, of all places. We live in the city and decided to take an impromtu getaway to Geneva. We were in search of good food in the area and were surprsied to hear about a much raved sushi restaurant in the area. I have to agree with everyone and say their sushi is really fresh and just yummy. They had a VERY extensive menu with about 20 or 30 specialty rolls. We had an appetizer and roll off their daily specials and they blew us away. We had tuna sashimi wrapped around julienne cut pear, apple, and cucmber served with amazing citrus sauce. REFRESHING and AMAZING. The roll of the day was a spicy lobster roll that had the perfect amout of heat and taste. We had several other rolls that were equally good. Definitely DAMN GOOD food. The decor is contemporary, but not totally refined since it had a little bit of an IKEA feel to it. But still nice. Its just wierd that its in a strip mall. Another thing to note is that it seemed VERY kid friendly. We were kinda surprised becasue we saw several families dining there with small children. (Not something too common at downtown sushi restaurants). read more

Good food nice clean place, service was very very slow. Maybe our waitress was having a bad day.

Great Sushi and Fantastic atmosphere! Had a really fun time at Swordfish with friends! Service: Waitress was prompt and friendly. Beverages kept flowing and she really read the pace of how we ate our food lol. I came with two friends with black holes in their bellies, and she was able to be adapt and be attentive. Props! Food: Really top quality stuff. By the god, we ordered so much that night. All the raw fishies tasted fresh and went down easy. A personal recommendation would be the King Avo Kani. Which is King Crab with Avocado lightly drizzled with Mango Sauce. I swore I shed a single tear when it started dancing on my tongue! The appetizers and Tea did not fail to disappoint either! Shame on me for falling pray to the delicious wings at a Sushi place! The variety in Sushi and the rest of the menu is wonderful. Atmosphere. I really love the color coordination and the lighting they use at the restaurant. It is so relaxing and easy on the eyes. I wish the tables were more spread out, but that is a mild complaint. I generally don't like sitting at the sushi bar, but they make it look so glamorous! Take a girl out here if you can! She will love it! I will definitely try to make it out here if I go in the area. All in all, this place definitely makes my favorite sushi places list! The fish and atmosphere are too good to pass up! read more

Best sushi in the far west suburbs, by far. I've been here with my family numerous times. It's also a great date spot, too. It is a bit expensive but you get what you pay for, the presentation of all the dishes is beautiful and all the fish is very fresh and of high quality. They have the typical authentic sushi dishes as well as a variety of creative rolls. Personally I'm a fan of the kamikaze roll- spicy tuna over spicy tuna. If you haven't been- take a hot date here. (Probably a great Valentine's day spot, too) read more

Good sushi, but not our style. If you are looking for unusual dishes and sushi rolls, this place is for you. Our taste in sushi is more traditional (spicy tuna, salmon roll etc) and doing that well. Not trying to do 'contemporary' versions of this. Overall we found the food had quality. The difficulty was finding a roll or meal we would enjoy. And for what we got I found Swordfish much more expensive when compared to equal or better sushi restaurants in the area. Service was good and it wan not a bad restaurant. A bit pricy and not quite our style. read more

We absolutely love this place. The service is amazing. May is the best as a server we ask for her very time. We attend at least twice a month. Saturdays and Thursdays for their specials are the way to go. May is the server to request. What a great place for sushi!! read more

Expensive--but generally worth it. If you want cheap, good sushi, go to Jurin in Geneva. The food isn't as good, but it is good and not as expensive. If you want REALLY good sushi, go to Swordfish. Add in a nice decor? Swordfish. Friendly, attentive service welcoming to my well-behaved service dog? Swordfish. Creative plates and gorgeous presentation? Swordfish. It's the best sushi place in the suburbs. I've been over quite a lot of suburbs looking/tasting. The only problem with Swordfish is the price. It is the most expensive sushi I have eaten outside of Chicago. For special occasions, we go there. For everyday "hungry for sushi" occasions, we go to Jurin. Jurin is also friendly/good service and welcoming of my service dog. One tip--if you like your Philadelphia rolls with avocado, not celery, tell your server in advance. read more

Had a great lunch. The dinner scallops with soup and salad were done perfectly. Our server was very attentive. Nice atmosphere.

This is the best sushi place I've found in the area. Their food is always fresh, presentation amazing, and creativity is second to none. The only downside is they can be a bit pricy. read more

Swordfish - Beautiful presentation - Sushi Bars Near Me - Batavia, Illinois

TO DIE FOR SUSHI!! This place is amazing. Trendy enough without be snobby or inattentive. The service is always outstanding, some servers with more personality than others but always with top notch service standards. Thank You Swordfish for redeeming suburbs sushi :) read more

We leave happy and satiated every time we dine here. Fresh sushi, fair prices, and fast service. We love the super white tuna and the Philadelphia rolls. Management has just changed hands but that didn't change the quality. We love it here! read more

There aren't many independent restaurants in the far western suburbs of Chicago, so I appreciate that this place is around. The decor and atmosphere is hip and upscale and they have good alcoholic drinks. As a vegan, though, I didn't feel well accommodated here. Their miso soup has bonito in it (ugh) and their vegetable sushi was mediocre. I also had some kind of mushroom/tofu dish that was okay, but nothing special. I've been to plenty of Japanese restaurants that not only have vegan food, but have really good, innovative vegan food. Swordfish is not one of them. It's a shame because I know lots of vegans and vegetarians who would eat here if Swordfish made even a slightly more concerted effort to make them feel welcome. read more

Probably closer to 3.5 stars. There's nothing wrong with Swordfish; the fish tasted fresh and the rolls were generous. But...nothing knocked me out here, either. Perhaps the rolls were just slightly too generous; some of them were almost too large to fit in one's mouth. The rice wasn't brilliant, either. I prefer my sushi rice to actually taste seasoned, and this just tasted like rice. And frankly, I did NOT like the california rolls. (We tried the basic one, and the sunset one.) I guess I'm odd, in that I expect a California roll to have crabstick in it, instead of actual crab. I don't like actual crab. (I know, okay? Weird.) So I don't know what my actual conclusion about Swordfish is. There are so many sushi places now in the tri-cities area that I feel like I'd want to try a few more before I settled on Swordfish as my go-to. read more

What a surprise to find this all the way out in the west suburbs. I'll admit I was skeptical, but I've been there twice now and both times the fish was delicious and fresh. I ordered the chirashi bowl, which was incredibly filling. Look, it's pricey, but the fish is fresh and the service is fast.. when you're eating raw food what more could you ask for? read more

My boyfriend and I celebrated our 1 yr Anniversary on Feb 10. He made a reservation here based on reviews and because we like the sushi!! It was a great experience all around. The outside doesn't do it justice. We were seated next to the fire place. It was cozy and clean and the waiter was very attentive. The Lobster miso soup was so delicious!! A great starter. Beef asparagus was tasty. The food came in a timely manner and well presented. I wish I could remember the names of the plates. I'm so bad with names. Lol! One name involved "Mountain" in it. That was the one we liked the most. We also had a baked dish. I included pics of the foods. Yum!! Great job to Swordfish and to my love for picking the spot. I recommend it. read more

My girlfriend got a steak and I got the swordfish. Her steak was cooked well and it was seasoned well and tender. My swordfish seem like half of it was a little dry and the other half was good. I was kind of bothered by the fact that both our plates had basically the same thing on them besides the meats. They came with some grilled vegetables and the same sauce. I thought for the price they could have been a little bit more creative. We also ordered the tuna flight and some vegetable tempura. They were both done very well. The tuna was fresh and the tempura kept its crunch even when it cooled down. The service was pretty good. We just got a couple of drinks and they came out in a timely manner. read more

We come here quite regularly. I think its the best sushi place in the tri-cities area. The menu has a number of options for everyone, the decor is warm and cozy. The quality of the fish has been consistently good. We've tried a number of makis but I have not found a favorite... I recommend the wakame salad, this is quite delicious with the orange miso vinaigrette dressing. read more

Let me start off by saying, the maki at Swordfish is not bad. For everybody that gives this place 5 stars, you have never had REAL maki (rolls). While the presentation was very nice, the fish was not as fresh as it should be and the maki was dull. I understand, being in Chicago or the burbs, we are nowhere near the ocean, so I don't expect that much. For the best sushi/maki, head over to Bistro Wasabi. read more

First time ordering from here through uber eats and was not disappointed! ordered: soft shell crab, spicy tuna, salmon skin, shrimp tempura, and 3 kinds of nigiri. soo delicious! everything tasted fresh! the owner even gave us free Baby shark sushi - thank you owner! will definitely be ordering here again! read more

Had a $22 for $40 Groupon that I used yesterday. The ambiance of the place is relaxed, comfortable; decorations are nice & waitress was really attentive/kind. Awesome variety of sushi, some rolls I hadn't even heard of. My girlfriend ordered the mother of pearl & some other one while I got the moon river & crunch muffy. The presentation was beautiful- the chef made butterflies out of carrots! I wish I could say I was overjoyed by the taste, but I was kind of disappointed; I've had better sushi elsewhere. When it got the bill, I was surprised at the additional $45 left to pay after the Groupon, not including tip, so I thought this place was a bit overpriced at first. However we did also get a large Sapporo each & shared edamame as an appetizer so that must be kept in mind. I like trying new sushi places so I'm glad I got the experience but I won't be returning since it is out of my way from home/work & I wasn't a big fan of the food. read more

I'm a big fan. Ate here on a Sat. night, had reservations but were a half hr early and they still got us in with a 5 minute wait. The atmosphere is great....the lighting just right, not overly bright but also not really dark. The food choices were great, as other reviewers here mention it's a little pricey but the rolls are so unique, they're very worth it. We had 3 drinks, soup, a couple of different roles and the tab was less than $60 before tip. The have a decent wine list and best of all our server Chas. was very knowledgeable about the wines on the list. My date loved the martini selection. Ther service was fantastic as well...what's not to like. Check it out, you'll be glad you did. read more

My wife and I tried this place out recently. Very nice ambiance and our waitress was very friendly and informative. We tried two premium and one basic roll and here is my rating for each one of them. Moon River and Oceans 13 were A+ and the basic Spicy Tuna was A. Rolls are more expensive than usual sushi restaurants. Regardless I would recommend this place. read more

Mmmmm, sushi. I've had a couple of girls'-night-out dinners here, and I can honestly say I'm bummed we won't be back, because I don't live in the Fox Valley anymore and it makes no sense to meet there! Swordfish is fresh, inventive, very tasty sushi. The atmosphere is lovely, too -- nicely lit with semi-private booths and cool decor. It's not cheap -- I've easily spent $30-$40 just on myself -- but it's worth it. (And the aforementioned price included two rolls, an appetizer, part of a bottle of wine and dessert.) I can't speak to food specifics since I haven't been there in awhile, but I've never had anything there I didn't like. In fact, I'm making myself hungry for some maki just writing this... read more

After a few months of crazy weekends with no opportunities to dine out, my wife and I visited Swordfish last week for a sushi fix. We got our usual of a variety of Nigiri for appetizers and three rolls to share. We always like to try the special rolls and back them up with a favorite off the regular menu. Everything was very good, but we both saw some subtle changes in our very favorite roll, the Scary Spider. We love it because of the tempura soft shell crab, but this roll was very generous with the cream cheese with little crab. Hopefully this was just an off night and not the start of a trend of cutting corners to increase profits. read more

Sushi is consistently awesome. Sit at the sushi bar and they will make you anything you want! Chef's hot sauce is amazing! Fav rolls are sushi or dead and super crunchy tuna! King crab is also great! read more

I live in Chicago - we have some great sushi restaurants in the city, but this one is a killer! Excellent, Fresh - well priced. (I mean, not pricey if you compare to city favorites like Japonais, Sushi Wabi, etc.) Came here with a large group and we couldn't stop ordering all their inventive rolls - love the atmostphere - it's light and fun. Sake - wasn't hot enough at first, but they made sure the rounds following were piping hot! Great service! Wish I lived closer. I'd be ordering it all the time! read more

Ordered take out for lunch a couple times. My co-worker had an hour lunch so she picked it up, but the order wasn't ready when she showed up, so she ended up waiting another 15 minutes. Other than that, the sushi rolls are not only fantastically beautiful, but DELICIOUS!!! :-) Only down side, more $$$ than I'd like to pay. So if you don't mind the price, great place to eat. Decent portions. read more

As good as it gets for this area for sure for the quality of the sushi, variety of the rolls - unbelievable combos! - and wonderful, genuinely interested and warm service. And, m husband is wheat intolerant so they were accommodating to his soy sauce/rice flour needs. We went last night and had the Monster roll (brown rice yum!), Ocean's 13 (13 rolls!), hubs had sushi that melted in his mouth and the best grilled calamari on greens I've ever had. Tender; almost like a firm whitefish. Our bill was around $100, but we definitely had the quality going and again the service was spectacular. (restaurant.com has certificates that they will honor S-TH) I hope they stay around a long time as we enjoy special occasions there. BTW the tea selection by NUMI is really great - decaf available! This is a great place for a group of sushi lovers who has the one token friend who doesn't like sushi (that'd be me, seafood grosses me out). It has a great atmosphere, and I liked the almost-spa-like music. The other poster who commented about a free framed picture of your group for a bday dinner wasn't kidding - that really happens. Their menu has a lot to choose from, so much so that I was almost tempted to try sushi that actually has cheese in it! Friends sitting nearby had spicy crunchy tuna, ocean's 13, dragon eyes, and other fun named sushi. And it didn't smell fishy! I opted for the Chicken Entree which was sliced chicken breast in a dry teriyaki rub with soy sauce and cooked asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower and a bowl of rice. It also came with miso soup and a salad with amazing ginger dressing. They brought me more ginger dressing upon request for the rice - soooooooo good! I would come back here all the time just for the ginger dressing! They also had large bottles of Japanese beer that I really liked. And the desserts all looked really good. My guy and I split the Chocolate Duo, which was dark and white chocolate mousse. Yummm. read more

Extensive list of specialty rolls, and a pretty complete wine list as well. Service for us was slightly slow, but the presentation of the food was outstanding. The smokey bear roll was...smokey (salmon) and snow crabby. The crispy spicy tuna roll was decent, although not that "crispy". The Ocean's 13 roll...was actually 13 pieces, very good stuff. The drawback to this place is the price, it's up there. For example, a large house salad is $7 that would usually qualify in between a small and large serving at other places. I guess they balance that out with the presentation in a leaf shaped bowl and two breadsticks that appear to look like chopsticks, but are edible. read more

My husband and I went to Swordfish today for lunch. A very disappointing experience. Not only were we not happy with the service, the sushi ended up making us sick throughout the remainder of the day. We looked at the reviews prior to going and saw that they were mixed - both good and bad. We leaned towards the good, but will not be going back. Way over priced for not so fresh fish. Recommend to stay away. There are much better Sushi restaurants out there. One we would absolutely recommend is TL in Bartlett. A little bit of a drive but well worth it.
