I almost feel bad for doing this. My wife and I were hungry while out shopping, and decided on a couple rolls, and 2 pieces of yellowtail sushi, for a light lunch. The place was packed. We ordered it to take-out. I have been to many sushi restaurants. A lot in the area, and even some across the country. Vegas, Baltimore, Florida, grocery stores, you name it. I almost always like the sushi I get. Even out here in Yorkville, we can find decent sushi. There is a hidden dive of a sushi place, all you can eat, that is even pretty good for the price in Joliet. After looking at the menu online, and being a little off put but the high prices (9 dollars for a philly roll?) we ordered a Philadelphia Roll, and a Spicy Tuna. Also two pieces of yellowtail sushi. Twenty minutes later, I picked it up from the friendly staff at the front. We opened up the container in the car, to eat quickly and keep shopping, and my wife immediately told me to look at the color of the yellowtail. It was starting to turn a dull gray. But I didn't think too much of it, because appearance isn't everything. Although, it helps, especially when it's raw foods that need to be as fresh as possible. Anyways, I don't know if it was a bad day, or if all the other great reviews on here have never had good sushi, but this was easily the worst sushi that I have even eaten in my life. That's pretty hard for me to even say, because I have had several supermarket sushi trays in my life. I would go to Jewel and grab their sushi over going back here. It was also 25 dollars for what we got. Two basic rolls and the yellowtail sushi. 25 dollars. This isn't downtown Chicago. This sushi tasted like what I would imagine sushi that I attempted to make at home for the first time would taste like. Like nothing. I can't rate the experience of dining in, or the wait staff, since it was simply carry out, but dear god, expand your horizons, and venture out to Naperville, or Chicago for some real sushi. I would say we are both foodies, we eat out a lot, I am a Culinary Arts graduate, and appreciate a good meal. We have never looked at each other and said "Wow, this is terrible." about any meal we have ever had. I guess there is a first for everything. I have noticed a recent review state that they have improved over time. Anything worse than what we ate today, I would seriously consider asking for my money back. Like I said, I really, really hope that we just had an "off-day" for the chef's or else I am going to be in shock by all the people giving this place great reviews. Pretty good service, overpriced and mediocre "sushi". The restaurant itself is dated - curtains are ragged, typical bargain bulk metal chairs, a bit cramped. Dark, very 1990's, early 2000's layout and design. One thing is that the prices here are crazy. My wife and I lived in New York City and didn't even come close to paying the prices that Swordfish charges. Heck, even when I was in Tokyo the prices were nothing like this. Ditto for the saki prices. For the 300mL bottle we got the price was normally $28. The saki was nearly a house-saki quality. You can easily get a 750 mL small-run bottle of Tokubetsu Junmai sake from Shikoku for around $25. Skip it and get the drinks ahead of time at a bar. Sushi quality was sub-par. First warning was some rolls came with cheese. Seriously, you'd be strung up if that was offered in Tokyo. Other rolls were over-complicated and overstuffed with items, probably to mask the questionable quality of the fish. Unagi was average if not overcooked. The tamago was odd - a giant omelet with a slit cut into it and rice smashed inside. O-toro was hardly that, mushy and at $10 for one piece this should have been better. My wife did get a roll with 'tempura' shrimp which was obviously cooked in cold oil. No crunch, all oil and disgusting. Sashimi was oddly bland, luckily it wasn't as gamey as the rest of the sushi. Total dinner for two inched close to what you'd pay at a place like Morimoto and lemme tell you, this wasn't anything close to that. Bodega sushi, yes. Plating was garish. Go into any quality Japanese sushi restaurant and you get a clean presentation. The plate shouldn't overwhelm the sushi, especially with distracting, dated vegetables-cut-into-roses and animals. This was to be our first wedding anniversary dinner which ended up as a gastronomical epic failure. read more

I have been to Swordfish several times and have always loved it but my most recent visit has changed my opinion completely. Some friends had dinner at the sushi bar so that both of us could use our groupons. When it was time to pay our server kindly explained that the manager would not allow us to use both groupons because we were one group of people. I asked to speak with the manager and when she came over to us she immediately started yelling at us and telling us it's one groupon per group. But the group clearly stated one groupon per table. She continued to yell at us in front of the whole restaurant and then stood behind us to make sure we both paid. I will never be returning to this restaurant again. And plan to call the owner this week. read more

The whole time we were sitting there, I was thoughtfully munching my delicious sushi, wondering if on this person's job application, there was simply the title of "carrot guy". Carrot Guy, your efforts did not go unnoticed. This place is very good but be warned, you do pay for it. Each roll averages about $13. I'm also quite sad that they don't offer their All You Can Eat once a week. Husband works nights so I don't know when I'll ever be able to experience the magic that surely is all I can eat. Why is this place called SWORDFISH when I clearly didn't see any Swordfish in the menu? I feel like the more inland I go away from the West Coast of the USA, the more expensive Asian food gets. My team and I came here for dinner since our college kiddies expressed their need for some Asian food. This was as close to RICE and FISH as we could get. Here's what we ordered: Triple Spicy (wasn't very spicy, more like pricey!) Swordfish Cucumber Roll (really..there's no swordfish in here, just some kinda crab flavored meat in a sheet or cucumber) Chirashi (HOLY $H1T $25?! CA IS CHEAPER THAN THIS!!!) Smokey Crunch Roll (Where's the smokey flavor? I think there was potato salad wrapped up in there somewhere..) Dirty Old Man Roll (if you are dirty minded in some way, I'm sure you can stomach this one ;) ) Toro Flight (Not bad..) Total Bill: $500?!!!!! :( We had 5 and a half people. The half people are the college kids since they are under 5'5 feet. Service: Decent. Our server was a bit too friendly with our Asian college ladies. Bad restaurant customer service. I'm glad this will be our first and last time passing through here. Food: OVERPRICED!!! You can get a Chirashi in CA, WA, NY and NJ for like $15. That's the most we'd pay for a Chirashi. Presentation is creative and looked delicious...until we we started eating it. I think they overdid it on sauces here. Not a bad thing, but its not really appealing for my Asian nature. Some seafood here IS NOT fresh. If you're from the West or East Coast or somewhere with a body of water, your taste buds can tell what fresh and not so fresh tastes like. Also, our rice seemed like it was in the fridge for a bit. I'm not a fan of eating cold rice. Ambiance: Dimly lit, more for a romantic date for the locals. Our favorite sushi in the area. The owner and service are always superb! They've gotten to know us and our family and go above and beyond, with free appetizers on the house, just for coming in often. Our family always loves the owners' surprises! The staff is very hard working. We have done celebrations there as well, and they always make it special. Truly wonderful people. Highly recommend! It's been ages since I have written a review but I enjoyed a lunch and came back two days later for dinner. It was just that good. Presentation as always makes it special, but every generous piece of fish was fresh and flavorful. We met one of the chefs who came out to personally offer us an amberjack with a little dollop of real wasabi. Last night, a lovely woman came up to say hello and ask how everything was. I was greeted and sat immediately, ordered two rolls and had them with in a few minutes, and I really liked the atmosphere. Specialty rolls average about $17/each but they are large and great presentation. I can't find anything wrong and they exceeded all of my expectations, I'm leaving fat, dumb, full and happy:-). You walk into this place and you feel like you're in downtown Chicago. The decor is contemporary Asian influenced, and it's some of the best sushi I've ever had (and by far the best in the Western suburbs). It's somewhat pricey, but you get a good amount of food for your money, and it's worth every penny. The first time you go you should definitely order one of the combination entrees because you get several different kinds of sashimi and rolls, and a salad and soup. The people next to us ordered a lobster tail, which looked really really good too. I think an average entree is about $20. read more

Always a fav, we sit at the Sushi Bar and love love love it! We go there about once a month. Pricey as some say, but a great value. Always super fresh and I have never once questioned their food handling or storage. Sometimes I eat from the kitchen and get a teriyaki dish. The house salads (the dressing is the bomb!) are lovely and hubby always gets Teka Don, raw tuna sampler. If we were rich we'd eat there once a week!! Maybe more.... read more

We ordered takeout from here this past week. The inside is cute and you have the option of sitting at the sushi bar to watch the chefs prepare the sushi. The rolls that we ordered were delicious (turtle, white dragon, and blue fin toro.) The owner even gave us some things on the house which was sweet of them. The staff was very friendly. I tried this restaurant based on the positive reviews we found from Zagat, rating this restaurant above par for food, decor, service, and atmosphere. The restaurant received a rating of 27, the highest I have seen for a Japanese restaurant in Illinois. I was intrigued and wanted to see what the hype was about. I had high expectations going into this restaurant based on all the reviews I read. First and foremost, I expected the fish to be amazing, and it was. There were many notable ones like the fatty tuna and superwhite tuna. Also, the Green Dragon and Tuna Gone Wild rolls were absolutely fantastic. I have to add that Swordfish has great 'alternatives' for those that don't appreciate sushi as much. The grilled seabass was outstanding, and even the teriyaki chicken was great. The service was awesome. We got our drinks and appetizers within the first 10 minutes of sitting down. Then it slowed to a comfortable drift allowing us to paddle our way at our own pace. Meanwhile, our server watched our table like a hawk. The setting, atmosphere and decor was great. I usually like smaller restaurants with less tables, but our table was secluded enough and more intimate than most of the other tables. The decor seemed updated in most areas. However, it was a surprise to know that Swordfish has been in business for quite some time (over a decade or so), as most sushi joints don't seem to last as long. I had a Groupon that was about to expire and I figured "what a great opportunity to take my parents out to dinner!" My father had never had sushi and was interested, my mother could care less. My add and I shared the Oceans 13/ and Red Dragon and I also had the Spicy Tuna and Atlantic King Salmon rolls. Overall, the flavor was really good. I just wasn't impressed with the price. All the specialty rolls are over $15 each. When I get sushi I like to get a few rolls, and I suppose if I were sharing with more people it would make more sense. I've been to plenty of really nice sushi restaurants in Chicago that were not $15 and up in price. Kind of deflating for me. Otherwise, I enjoyed my food. Swordfish possesses a number of strengths, the most salient of which is the decor and the waitstaff -- both seemed designed to melt away the stress of your day. I've made over a dozen visits to Swordfish, since it first opened, and have never had bad service. Every visit also brings with it a renewed appreciation for the relaxing atmosphere. This establishment has an eye for detail. I had some leftover maki rolls boxed up last evening and, when I opened up the box to eat the leftovers for lunch, appreciated the fact that they included a presentation of wasabi, ginger, and apple slices along with the leftover rolls. If Swordfish has a drawback, it would have to be the price. I never go without a Groupon or without timing my visit to their monthly buffet (all-you-can-eat for $35 on the last Wednesday of every month). I enjoy cooking at home, but sushi is just something that I haven't tried to master in my own kitchen. Going to Swordfish is a luxury and an indulgence for this Midwestern girl. read more

I have been to Swordfish dozens of times so I figured since I have never had a bad experience I might as well leave a review. I went this weekend with my husband and tried 4 maki rolls and their lobster miso soup. The lobster miso was $7 which to me was a great deal considering it had large chunks of real lobster and oysters in it. It was delicious. We have never been disappointed with Swordfish. I also love the ambience. From the outside you would never imagine how serene and pretty it is on the inside. Yes it is a bit pricey (we always spend at least $80-$100 here for 2 people) but it is not a place you eat at every night of the week. We go here when we need some "real sushi" and don't feel like driving too far. I did read a few negative reviews regarding the freshness of the seafood, but I assure you the seafood is ALWAYS fresh. I have been going here for 6 years and have never been turned off by their raw OR cooked food. The Sushi is really great at this place. But way overpriced for what it is. They do have a pretty impressive menu with a great amount of variety. If you are veggie...I would avoid as there menu is very limited and not as tasty as some other places I have been to in the city. The inside when you first walk in is OK- then you see all the really cheesy picture of customers on these poster boards all over the place and it ruins the ambiance a lot. The service is pretty slow when dining in but the take out is pretty quick. Ok this next part is not going to be well received I am sure-but there is an older woman who is the host and possibly the owner/manger who is not nice. She seems a bit old an cratchity...and she always seems to be in a cranky/bad mood....The warm woodsy feeling that you may get is because it used to be an Atlanta Bread Company before it was this restaurant left a lot of it the same. When I bring friends here for dinner, I always receive a lot of surprised looks. Many find it hard to believe you can find a hip trendy atmosphere in the 'burbs much less in a shopping plaza. Unfortunately it is quite pricey (around $18 a roll) but the rolls are all very large, delicious and very inventive. I love the Dirty Old Man and the Tuna or Death. Swordfish might be a bit pricey, but you really get what you pay for. They have very inventive rolls! So many fun combinations of delicious flavors. They also have a large saki list, which are served in really modern glasses. The food is fantastic, and treated like a work of art. The presentation is incredible! I can't even explain, as I couldn't do it justice. The overall atmosphere of Swordfish is contemporary and very hip. (i'm a sucker for bright red walls.) This is hands down one of my favorite places to eat in the Tri-cities area, but I only go there for special events as its it pricey. read more
