Location: Good price for a great location if you are looking to stay in the center of Amsterdam, just a 10 minute walk from the main train station, Amsterdam Central. Price: Compared to the others hotels in the area, it was reasonably affordable for such a good location. Room was fine. Room: The room was fine and clean. A big drawback is the lack of plugs. There were none near the bed and 2 others around the room didn't work. The reason for the 3 stars is the fact that the bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke. The toilet ran. The shower bar fell while my friend was showering (see pic) so there was nothing to hold the shower head. Service: The staff were fantastic! Everyone I interacted with was amazing and friendly. They let me keep my bags there for the remainder of the day after I checked out. read more

Location cannot be more central. Dam Square is full of energy and people. Central Station is close, lots of trams and subway nearby as well. Restaurants, groceries, shops, etc all around. You are in the middle of everything. Definitely a 5 for location. We stayed in a junior suite on the 3rd floor. The view is Dam Square, and the tram right outside. Room was large. Although it's loud outside the hotel, it was quiet inside. So no complaints there. The restaurant was also nice. Had breakfast and lunch there. Lots of other options outside as well but for breakfast and is your early riser like me, this is fine as they open at 7am. Amsterdam is not awake at 7am lol, sadly for me. So yes the hotel I liked overall. Just have a couple of items related to housekeeping. The body wash bottle was empty for almost entire trip. But we had brought our own thankfully. And the pillows smelled terribly. We had Febreze and that didn't even help. It was weird, they would smell OK then when it would be humid they start to smell. So for those things I took off 1 star. Otherwise, service was good. Staff was nice. Room was large, and reason enough to return. read more

This is a great hotel, I always trust the Swissotel brand in general, so when I found one in the center square of Amsterdam, I had to get it. Unfortunately, I booked the hotel while I was in Rotterdam and the internet was glitchy and I never got an email confirmation for it so when we arrived, they didn't have our reservations on file. We had to book a hotel on Easter weekend for twice as much, it was really discouraging. However, the rooms were comfortable, we got the business suite so my kids had a separate room. We had views of the city centre below, and the bathroom had a tub and shower separately for us to relax after a long day of trekking around the city. There were TVs in both rooms and they brought out a cot/pull out bed for the second room for my kids. The internet was great and I was able to do my work without any issues and the desk had views of the site below. It was a perfect stay, I just wished I didn't end up spending an additional $340 a night to stay here due to the internet glitch. read more

Great stay! I stayed here for the last night of my business trip to Amsterdam and they truly offered the best price/value of my three stops. While not as luxurious as The Grand, the room here was huge, clean and had all the ammenities of the others. Front-desk staff was super friendly. Coming from Switzerland, I found it a bit ironic that my bf chose the Swissôtel Amsterdam for our first stay in Amsterdam. But it was centrally located right on Dam Square in the middle of the historic center and only a short walk from the main train station. The room was nice and modern, as expected for a 4-star luxury hotel. They cater well to English-speaking tourists, and I liked how the guy at reception recommended a nice steak restaurant for dinner in the neighborhood where he lives--which was outside of the typical touristy area. However, the receptionist made a big show about choosing the "perfect" room for us--and although it was blatantly obvious that we were a couple--we wound up with a room with two little beds!! :O I understand that many hotels in Europe have two twins pushed together instead of a king bed, but please... in a 4-star hotel? I would have expected them to be more accommodating. They didn't even have those bed joiner thingy-ma-jingys, so it was impossible for two adults to cuddle on the bed together without the two beds spreading farther and farther apart. So much for a romantic weekend with my hunny bunny. :/ This is a non-smoking hotel, so you get fined for smoking. PROS: I did like how there were complimentary apples in the room on the first night and Lindt chocolates on the bed during turn-down service. Yum. And they also provided complimentary bottles of water in the room each day, which I thought was a nice touch. At the reception, they had carafes of flavored water in the morning, and it was refreshing to get a glass of mint or lime water before heading on out. CONS: Although the bathroom was modern, the shower/tub had one of those half-walls, so water got all over the place when one took a shower. I've really never understood who came up with this design and why some modern hotels have it. It's completely impractical and just completely soaks the floor. Also, I had a little tube of Neosporin that I put on the shelf near the kettle, and one day it disappeared after our room was cleaned! I have no idea what happened to it, and I wondered if the cleaning staff took it or misplaced it when cleaning our room. I looked and looked and couldn't find it. And I'm pretty sure I didn't move it from that shelf. Was kind of upset because I brought it from the U.S. months ago, and I don't think you can buy that in Europe. Didn't bother to complain to hotel staff about it, but I was pretty disappointed. read more

Perfect spot in Amsterdam! Right next to Dam Square. Location was key for me, as I didn't want a super long walk from any of the points of interest - so this place was perfect for me. Walkability... - 10 min walk to the Red Light district -15 min walk dodging crowds to and from Amsterdam Centraal. - 20 min walk to Bloemenmarket - 30 min walk to Anne Frank House - 40 min walk to Rijks Museum - 45 min walk to Van Gogh Museum ....but if you don't want to walk that much, the tram stop smoking right in front of the hotel, and seemingly the trams that stop must have been like 3 or 4 different trams. The hotel staff - very friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. Rooms - smaller, but clean up to date, equipped with free Wi-Fi, a nespresso machine, a soft bed with plenty of pillows. read more

Our friends stayed at the Swissotel while we were in Amsterdam. By the end of the trip, we ended up crashing with them as we couldn't stand our hotel (nothing worked and it was BOILING hot inside). They paid an absolute fortune for a top suite here, but it was so worth it. The place was fantastic. Right in Dam Square, we only stayed here for the second half of our stay, and I wish we had been there the entire time. Plenty of food, and things to do within walking distance. I stayed at this beautiful hotel during my weekend trip to Amsterdam. It's right in Dam Square, and a short walk to all of the amazing attractions! I had a very, very pleasant experience. The hotel staff was amazing, kind, and went above and beyond my expectations. I arrived late, and tired, Saturday evening to this hotel, and the front desk lady (I wish I knew her name, because she was incredible) gave me maps to navigate the city, recommended non-touristy places to eat (check out Omelegg!!), shops, and sights worth seeing. If I had a problem, it was addressed immediately, and they were always super friendly. The room itself was spacious, clean and crisp. The bathrooms were spotless, and the mini bar had a nice selection of items. I look forward to staying here again & highly recommend it to anyone staying in Amsterdam. read more

I can confidently say this was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in, hands down. Everything from the little extras, to the service, to the quality of the room...amazing. I actually can't think of one thing I would change at this hotel, which is a rarity. The location is perfect- right in Dam square, and close to the red light district so walking is definitely an option. We also took the tram a few times to different parts of the city, and one tram stop was right out front and the other was right around the corner. The front desk staff will help you plan your outing and take the time to give you options, show you things on the map, and seem genuinely interested in making sure you have a good vacation. Some of the little "perks" we enjoyed included refreshing minty water in the lobby/ business center, chocolates and water for turn down, and a business center where you can print documents (museum tickets, boarding passes, etc). We did not try the fitness center/ restaurant and looking back I wish we had, since those were probably amazing as well. I can confidently say that after my stay here we will actively seek out this chain of hotels when traveling, and recommend to our friends that they do the same. read more

I stayed at the Swissotel on two different occasions during a week long stay in the Netherlands. The first the fiancé and I arrived from the US at 8am in the morning. Do not take a taxi, the trains were simple and about 8 euros total for the both of us. The train is about 15 minutes from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal. Make sure you go out the main doors of the train station which will lead you out on the correct street straight to the Swissotel which is about a 10 minute walk. Just a word of warning, if you need assistance entering and disembarking the trains, you MUST call ahead so the Dutch can arrange assistance. They have these portable ramps which to get on and off the train. There are some accessible trains, but they are extremely limited. The Swissotel is right off Dam Square. They helped connect us with the train service to coordinate our other trips. The hotel is easily walkable to the Red Light District, many restaurants, and the train station. Right on the other side of the Royal Palace in Dam Square is a tram line. The #1, #2, #5 trams are all accessible, which the staff at the Swissotel was so kind to let us know. These trams go straight to the Blue Boat tours -which is a great way to see Amsterdam, right near the museums and Heineken experience. It saves time and is pretty cheap. The Swissotel has a connected restaurant which was quite good. The rooms were spacious and very clean. We didn't hear the noise from Dam Square, but we were in an interior Accessible room on floor 3 the first visit and floor 4 the last night we stayed prior to flying out. Unfortunately, room 420 the last night we stayed had the adjoining door, which I hate. I offers no soundproofing and, of course, I was woken up in the middle of the night by our neighbors. I would absolutely stay at Swissotel again. The service was superb, the location wonderful, and the rooms clean. read more

Nice lobby, nice room, but unspectacular. We asked for a high room, but we didn't get one. Our room on the second floor faced inwards, so it was relatively quiet. However, we had people smoking on the fire escape next to our bedroom window, which wasn't pleasant. Room was comfortable and wifi was free and very good. TV worked OK, and could get BBC One and Two. Service was nice, as we got Lindt Lindor chocolates each night and a small bottle of water. Towels were quite rough, but they do their job, yet the shower was dismal, simply trickling out. There are no gowns hanging in the wardrobe, but there is a pillow menu. You will need this, as the default pillows are too soft. The bed also needs replacing, as I sunk in the middle. Overall, not a bad experience: good location and friendly staff. Don't forget that you will have to pay 'city tax' on departure. read more

I've stayed here twice in their suites. The service is great, the hotel is quiet and the rooms are nice, but occasionally have sort of odd configurations because they are shoehorned into an older building. The best part about this hotel is that it is very centrally located. You overlook Dam Square and you are within easy walking distance to quite a bit of central Amsterdam. Plus, if you get hungry at night, Chipsy King is a drunken stumble away... Literally. The hotel very good value for the money compared to the other hotels in the area. One can spend a great deal at other hotels in the area for similar rooms that are less centrally located, but why? read more

I selected this hotel based on the reviews by other travelers. While there are certain ammendaties that other folks rave about, I'm very dissatisfied with our stay. Upon check-in to the room the staff put us in felt so removed with a tiny courtyard window view. By tiny, I mean a small window in the corner of the room where nobody would congregate. This was a business room too, so upgraded from a regular room type. In addition, the room smelt musty and smokey and just made us extremely uncomfortable. But not sure if that's due to the old building or smokers in the city. We worked with the staff to get an upgrade, but unfortunately the only room open was the suite. As you can imagine, this was very nice. However, given we were here for New Years there was a serious upcharge on the room which hurt, but we couldn't stay 4 days in a dumpy hotel room while we ended a long European trip. In addition to the issues upon check in, we also had awful pillows with zero comfort, a coffee machine that was broken, we were interrupted twice when privacy was marked on our door, and our room not being thoroughly cleaned when the maid came through our room. There were also few times where when we were out during the day (4+ hours) to come back to our room not cleaned. Lastly, this could just be us, but they have an awful smoke coverup scent being blasted from their vents on each floor by the elevators. A very unpleasent scent to say the least. The good? Lindt Chocolates when we received turn down service. Once upgraded we had a great view of Debuenkorf and Dom Square. We stayed here for the NYE holiday and while the streets were very noisy we enjoyed watching fireworks and people watching from our suite. Very centrally located, you can really walk to whatever you want. We didn't take cab once to get to the places we wanted. The hotel has potential with such friendly staff. Sounds like based on other reviews we may have caught the hotel during an extremely busy time which resulted in a poor experience for us. read more

I stayed here twice and it's a very nice hotel located perfectly in the center of the city and is a 10 minute walk to the train station (Central Station). Problems: (1) arrived at 8am on a Sunday morning and wasn't able to check in until 2. This is unpleasant to say the least after traveling for 10 hours. They did lock up my luggage before sending me on my way into a cold, rainy, and mostly empty and closed city; after asking, I did get an umbrella from the concierge; (2) walls are thin. You will hear people in the hall and if you're near the elevator, this is not good; (3) my room, 311, is opposite the maid closet and they weren't exactly worried about the noise the slamming door makes as they go in and out every 3 minutes. A slamming door can be heard all morning long so don't plan on slewing in if you're unlucky enough to get room 211, 311, 411 etc.; (4) Upon check out, at 6am, I was told my friend couldn't stay until 2 (he had a later flight) because check out time is 12 noon. Oh the irony of me waiting until 2 to check in! Not so sure I'll be checking back in to the Swissotel! read more
